LBT Fanfiction / The Land Before Time: Far Away Home
« on: November 16, 2011, 10:56:49 PM »
Just coming in for my 2 months update.  I did another paragraph of Far Away Home tonight, but it's proving harder then ever.  The main stumbling block I've been facing lately is trying to come up with reasonable things for Littlefoot's and Ruby's side of the gang to say when they meet up.  Since it was over 2 years ago that I prepared my notes for the scene, they are out of date and frankly look pretty shitty to me now  :anger .  Trying to do them again, I find it is highly difficult to overcome the nostalgia surrounding the old arrangement.  :cry

The sequence surrounding Sky's Trial is very well set and good enough to escape (or rather pass unquestionably) my quality control mechanisms and will be pretty good once I get it done - but unforunately I gotta figure out how to tie the loose end mentioned above before I can publish it too.  :angel

The Fridge / Talent does not Equal Passion

I believe that passion should = hard work, which would produce a statement like this:

Accomplishment is proportional to Talent + Hard Work

The Fridge / Member Appreciation Thread
« on: November 02, 2011, 05:57:23 PM »
It's been over two years since I last posted in this thread, so I figure that by now it is long overdue.  It seems like this time 2009 was the heyday of my involvement in the Gang of Five... I was reading stories, providing reviews, joining RPs and writing my own fanfiction works on a weekly (occassionally even daily) basis.

Like all things though times have changed.  Many of the members are used to know aren't active at all anymore, and still more only post once in a blue moon.  A lot of the drive I used to have back in 2009 and 2010 for Land Before Time is gone, with other things in life taking it instead.

Since this will likely be the last time I post in this thread, I'm going to make it count.

I would firstly like to thank Sky for all his artistic contributions to my writing over the past few years as well as the timid and considerate kindness he shows in all of his posts.  It is a quality we share, and it is worthy of note that we have never once fought over anything since the day I first sent a PM to his mailbox.  Though he can occassionally be tardy with reviews and require a bit of a 'push' to work on his art the results are always worth the wait.

The next member I would like to thank would be Serris.  While Far Away Home is my main 'purist' LBT story many of my less traditional stories have been met by him with full support and would never be as developed as they are today.  Thank you Serris for your prompt reviews and your enthusiasm about my material.

Littlefoot1616 is kind of like a big brother to me when it comes to writing fanfiction, and his constant support plus honest reviews have helped me know that my work is almost high quality and is actually being read. :)  I specifically appreciate that he has returned to writing Battle of the Sacred Essenses too (even though I still have a lot of it to read through yet to catch up) since many of the old writers have dissapeared to the shadows.

So it's finally happened... that is Pangaea has run out of steam  :p I could see that the rate he was contributing to the site was unsustainable even back in early 2010, but rather then warn him I simply let things be because everywhere he has been doing so much good for so many.  I think it's fairly safe to say that the quality of a review that Pangaea gives is top of the line, and even though he can take months at a time to make time to give it it's always worth the wait.  The effort he puts into making other members birthday cards is surprising and (though I am still waiting for mine  :oops ) completely appreciated by those lucky recipiants.

Pterano is a member that I don't know too well, but after a conversation about my works and a very well appreciated PM I can see a good friendship forming :angel

To every other member... don't forget to continue to post your appreciated members here whenever you feel the need.  I'm pretty sure there is nobody on this board that wouldn't like to see their name here... even if it is for something small.  :smile

The Party Room / What are you thinking about?
« on: November 01, 2011, 12:31:45 PM »
Trying to convince myself to continue writing the last chapter of Far Away Home.  The whole story has been such a whirlwind of inspiration followed by burn out that I don't know if I can actually do it again for a sequel.

The ranking system is actually more of a 'reward' thing so that you know how experienced said member is.  Many members acrue high post counts simply by participating on a daily basis for many years.

I think the intervals are 100, 500, 1000, and 5000 but I can't remember for sure.

I wonder why Luna doesn't have any bodyguards? There are a couple of possibilities for this:

1. She didn't tell her sister she was going to Ponyville so Celestia didn't bother to arrange any (likely reason)

or

2. Luna doesn't need any.  I would be willing to bet that even with her dark powers gone she could probably pulp anyone that gets in her way.  I would love to see a pony like Trixie challenge her to a duel to see what she is truely capable of now.

One of my favourite ways to inspire myself to write is to pull up a text program like Microsoft Word and resolve myself to write whatever garbage comes into my head in regards to the story I can muster.  Usually by the time I get past 2 paragraphs it starts to look really good.  A day later, I read over the entire thing again, edit it using my magic senses, and then if I am satisfied I post it.

Easy as pie... the only hard part is getting people to review it so you know your story is being followed >_<

WARNING!!  THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS!!

So basically, Luna is now a pony who is stuck in old traditions and is trying to fit in with a society that is a thousand years out of her league.  Hmm, not too sure how I feel about that.

She is also more of the traditional type of princess than her sister is.  So much so in fact, that they are complete opposites of one another.  In fact, one big thing was that Celestia understands fun while Luna does not.  The citizens of Ponyville had to practically teach Luna what "fun" is.

Also, you have to understand that the ponies being scared is nothing more than an act.  In fact, it's one that goes too far sadly.  Luna got so upset about everyone fearing her that she cancelled the holiday.  Not understanding that being scared of her was all part of the holiday fun.

However, it is sadly what makes me greatly dislike her new character.

You see, I've always hated the customs that royalty has.  I can understand WHY they have them, but it's also for those very reasons that the customs can die for all I care.  They're just so stupid and unnecessary in the end.

Celestia was such a nice change of pace.  She is a far more likeable character for me because of the fact that she steps away from many of the traditions of royalty.  It's the whole reason I put her in my top ten to begin with.

I'm sorry, but I just can't like cannon Luna in the end.  She's too attached to royal customs, and I hate those things with a passion.  However, if she were to let them go, I might like her in the end.  Sadly, until then, there's no way she's making my top ten.

Sorry, but to me, she was better as a villain. :)

However, I did like the new pony, Pip.  Yes, they actually named the new pony Pip after the main character in the novel "Great Expectations".  I'm sure some brony will make a side story out of that.  Just watch, it's expected now.

Anyways, next episode, a sisterly squabble with Rarity and Sweetie Belle.  Hmm, I wonder if this will bring up anything about the reason their parents...  aren't around.  I'm calling in Death Lesson!  Come on, writers, take the chance!
I think you should cut Luna some slack.  A thousand years of history is long time, and the way she is is just how things were back then.  It makes perfect sense for her to act the way she does, given the context.

Consider that it will probably take some time for her to 'mellow out' and become a bit looser as a pricecess like her sister.

Heck, by the end of the episode she is already learning.

This was by far the most enjoyable episode of MLP I've ever watched, and I hope she makes more appearences in the series.

The Fridge / Long Ago
« on: October 16, 2011, 12:23:51 AM »
When I was 14 years old (8 years ago) my dad wanted me to race cars.  It was his dream, but in his old age he put the money into gears, parts, bodies and gasoline to help me pursue the dream for him.  For four years I made my way from the bottom to the top, going from last place to first place in every class I raced in, but one day it all ended.

My dad was running in a stock car designed for racing around an oval track, just like me.  He wanted me to win, but he never figured that he would be the one to reach out for that first place trophy.  The track was slippery that day.  During lap 14 he missed the turn and struck the outer railing.  His car bounced over the boundary wall and crashed into the outer barracades.

He should of died as I watched his car flip over the railing and into the ravine, but my dad was a man of safetfy and he put $900.00 into a new device called the HANS, which restrained his neck to the seat as he plummetted down the parapet.

The device was broken beyond repair, but thanks to it my dad walked away from th accident without injury.  To this day he tells me:

"Your life is priceless... there is no subsittute for safety even among racers."

I can only remember that day and hope that I can live up to the greatness that is my dad. :cry

So Aizon offered to help Siak in return for a chance to help her raise her young? Now that’s interesting. It appears that there’s a lot about Aizon we still don’t know. I’m curious now to learn more about his backstory. Any chance we’ll be seeing more of Aizon in any of FAH’s sequels or side stories? I never would have expected it, but I think he’s become one of my favorite characters in Far Away Home.

Aizon plays a fairly prominant role in 'Into Blacksun'.  There is a lot I haven't revealed about him yet because he is supposed to be mysterious and interesting.  A couple of things I haven't talked about yet with him are:

A) What was the 'concurrent' event that led to Aizon becoming interested in children?

B) What is the relationship between Aizon and Sky?

C) How does Aizon feel about the Eye of the World's destruction? Will he accept the fact that the Sonicron must be destroyed too?

Lots to write about yet, which is what worries me.  I try splitting the chapters into two and yet they still come out as huge!  Maybe it has something to do with all the prose I like to jam in to make the conversations flow better. :angel

This game is pretty cool.  My recommendation is to add a brief blurb at the beginning explaining why Spike is there and what he is up to in the game world.
