The Fridge / Server Downtime
« on: March 29, 2010, 01:55:17 PM »
Well, I'm not back yet but I wanted to let y'all know that the server will be going down in 30-60 minutes.  When will it come back up?  As soon as I can get a table and the server set up permanently in the living room.  See my going away topic for more information:

The Fridge / Anyone Want to Improve Their Typing Speed?
« on: February 23, 2010, 06:17:33 PM »
The recent topic regarding typing speed inspired me to create this one.  I've had this program on my server for some time, but there have only been a few hundred downloads of it.  This is the program I used to learn how to type.  It's old, but it works great.  You may download it here:

http://lbtserver.co.cc/Public/Programs/Fre...utor25_free.exe

I would have never gotten where I was today without this program.  It gives you sample material which is great for memorization and it will gauge your typing speed.  Go ahead and try it!  It's a pretty small download.

The Fridge / Ah Man
« on: February 07, 2010, 01:15:58 AM »
Well, I'm sorry to say that my mother's Imac has a serious problem.  I'm 99% certain it's the PSU, but it could be the "logic board" or whatever the heck Apple calls it's motherboards.  I'm not spending $160 for a new PSU when that might not even be the problem.  Oh well.  It was only a 20" anyway.  I need to get her a 24."  Her vision's not that good.  Unfortunately, I don't have $1,000 to buy her another one right now. <_< I guess I'll post her existing one on Craigslist for $250 or something and maybe someone would be willing to take a chance on it.  It's easily worth $600 so maybe they would.......

Computer and Electronics / How To Manually Remove Malware
« on: February 04, 2010, 01:20:51 AM »
Well, I thought I'd give an in-depth tutorial on how to deal with pesky malware.  Malware is basically everything malicious including Viruses, Spyware, Adware, Worms, Trojan Horses, and Hijackers.  There's a little secret to removing these things pretty easily.  Now this won't work on the SUPER DUPER bad one's, but this will remove about 95% of all malware.  I just had a client come in with "SuperNodAntiVirus" or something like that.  The thing was a real b****.  But this method was able to get it off.  I was surprised actually.  Anyway, on with the tutorial.

1.  Back up your system.  You can really screw something up if you do the wrong thing here, so make sure you perform an entire system backup before doing this!

2.  Download AutoRuns.  AutoRuns is a more advanced version of MSConfig.  It's very useful when stopping malware from booting with the computer.  After downloading, put it on the desktop of the infected computer.

3.  Boot into Safe-Mode.  In Safe-Mode, most malware won't load enough to be able to stop your attempts to remove them.  You can boot into Safe-Mode by hitting the F8 key before the Windows boot screen (where it says "Windows XP" or another OS).

4.  Open the AutoRuns folder and start Autoruns.exe.  Once the program is started, check the following under the Options menu:

     *Include empty locations
     *Verify Code Signatures
     *Hide Signed Microsoft Entries

Press the F5 key to refresh the lists

5.  Now comes the hard part.  Now you have to figure out where the little sucker/s are hiding.  Look under the Logon and Services tabs first.  It'll usually be under there.  But make sure to look elsewhere too.  Delete anything that looks suspicious.  You can only delete startup PROGRAMS.  You can't delete registry entries that easily.  But before you delete these suspicious things, WRITE DOWN THE DIRECTORY where they're at so you can manually delete them later!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Now I'm sure you're wondering how you know what to delete.  Look in the directory that it's in.  Is it under the "Program Files" directory?  If so, it's probably a legitimate program.  Also look for if the program is verified.  Beware that many Intel programs are NOT verified.  I wouldn't delete anything that says it's Intel.

6.  Now it's time to delete the sucker/s.  Reboot your computer normally.  The malware should appear gone.  If it's not, repeat steps 3-5 and remove more suspicious stuff.  If it does appear to be gone, navigate to the directory/directories that you wrote down and manually delete the files.  Once this is done, the malware should be GONE!

This is a general report of my master laptop by the AutoRuns program.  It doesn't have a lot on it, so it's a perfect example.  Don't worry if this looks confusing.  It's a lot more user friendly in the regular mode of the program:

Notice that the only program that's not verified is Capstral?  That's because it's a company that's not very well-known, so they're not verified by Microsoft.  They create speech synthesis programs.  Just look at the programs that aren't verified carefully and you'll soon find the culprit (There's no culprit on my laptop at the moment).

Well, I hope this helps some of you.  Please make sure you know what you're deleting before you delete it though.  Unfortunately, CastleCops is down so I can't point you to any resources at the moment.  I'm still trying to find a new directory of common startup programs so I won't delete anything I need. :(

EDIT:
I should mention that this method will NOT work on a computer infected with Rootkits.  To remove Rootkits, try this FREE software:

http://www.antirootkit.com/software/Panda-...otkit-Tucan.htm

If you try this method and you really can't get the sucker off of there, try scanning for Rootkits.

The Fridge / lbtserver.co.cc - Permanent Domain Change
« on: January 31, 2010, 11:21:42 AM »
Well, www.co.cc just made a free DNS service!  I can't believe it.  So the new domain of the LBT Server is:

www.lbtserver.co.cc

Now this will make you all happy I suppose.  From now on, there will be no more having to replace the IP address with the domain name!  In fact, the end user can't even see the IP address and port number anymore!  Also, the requirement to have no spaces in filenames is GONE.  You can now have whatever spaces you want and you no longer have to replace the IP address and port number with www.lbtserver.2myip.net!  This will make everyone's job a ton easier (mine included).

But for everything gained, there always seems to be a cost.  ALL of my other .co.cc domains have to be put in a silent grave.  Why?  Because www.co.cc kinda frowns upon redirecting websites through another domain that's provided by them.  For example, when I specify the URL to TheLandBeforeTime.org, I specified it as "http://www.lbtserver.2myip.net/thelandbeforetimefunsite."  www.co.cc doesn't want me doing that with their domain names through another one of their domains.  So yeah, I've got to figure out what to do about that.

Another good piece of news however is that I can now get .co.nr domain names for websites on my server.  I couldn't do that before because freedomain.co.nr couldn't connect to my server and told me that the address I typed in could not be reached when I was trying to sign up.  Now however, it seems that www.co.cc sends a small package of data to any server trying to ping my server and it's enough to trick freedomain.co.nr into allowing the website.

Anyways, I've still got a lot of work to do.  I'm working on a new website for my business and I'm also going to get a .com in another domain that I need.  Unfortunately I can't share these websites with you, as one of them isn't something I'm proud of designing (because of it's content) and the other one (my computer repair website) has personal information on it such as my phone number and address.  Though I'm sure someone here could find it if they looked hard enough and knew where I lived, I'm not setting myself up as an open target.

The Fridge / Temporary URL For the LBT Server
« on: January 31, 2010, 04:11:56 AM »
Okay.  2mydns.com isn't responding to emails.  They obviously don't give a crap.  I have to change my domain name.  I've got a preliminary domain set up for the LBT Server:

www.lbtserver.tk

The only problem is, I can't allow hotlinking.  In English, you can't link to files or folders anymore without using the IP address, which changes constantly.  For example, you used to be able to have your own member url like this:

www.lbtserver.2myip.net/members/admin

Now however, if you use that with the new .tk domain name, it just directs you to the home page.  I'll try to find a solution, but I don't think this will be the permanent new domain name.

The Fridge / LBT Server DNS Down
« on: January 28, 2010, 03:12:28 AM »
Well, I don't know exactly what's wrong, but my server DNS is down.  I'll have to wait and see if it gets fixed automatically.  It's not on my end, because accessing the server through my IP address is fine.  But www.lbtserver.2myip.net doesn't work for some reason.  For now, use the following link to access the server:

http://24.118.144.163:8781

I've changed my IP address and port and it hasn't solved the problem.  It's on www.2mydns.com's end, not mine.  I just changed the forwarding URL to my IP address for TheLandBeforeTime.org.  It should be up and running shortly.

Oddly enough, someone was downloading a TV episode from my server today when the DNS was down.  They must've bookmarked the website by IP.  Damn.  That's not good. :bang I wish there was some sort of workaround for that.  Unfortunately, the only thing I could do to fix this is pay for hosting.  But even if I was willing to fork over the $75 a year, I doubt they'd keep it up due to legal issues. :( There's just no simple answers to my never-ending problems.

Computer and Electronics / Ipad
« on: January 27, 2010, 10:29:52 PM »
Well, Apple just released its highly secret Ipad.  I gotta say, I'm NOT impressed.  According to Steve Jobs, the Ipad is supposed to be in the middle of an Iphone and an Ibook....sort of like a device to replace the two.  It's just a load of crap.  The Ipad is just an Iphone with a larger screen and slightly faster processor.  If it really was a laptop replacement, give it more than 1.0ghz! 1.0ghz hasn't been mainstream in PC's for 10 years!  Apple still had 1.0ghz machines in 2003, but that was 7 YEARS AGO!!!  Get a life Apple! Talk about a cheap way to try to con stupid people out of their hard earned cash.  Now ya gotta buy a laptop, phone, and pad to do the job of a single PC.  Great job Apple.  Let's spend $3,000 instead of $500.  Sounds great for you. :rolleyes

« on: January 16, 2010, 01:29:43 AM »
This is an amazing deal for a Toshiba laptop.  The best thing is the HUGE 500gb hard drive and 18.4" screen.  Only $749!  Wish I could get a few, but my financial situation has to improve more before I go throwing money into non-essentials.  Anyway, here it is.  Check it out:

http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pdet.t...T68X1_LearnMore

EDIT:
Don't try to customize it.  You can only buy it as it is.  Trying to customize it links you to a different (and inferior) laptop.  But this machine has PLENTY for almost anyone, so don't worry about it.  Just know that if you get this, you'll have an 18.4" screen on your laptop, and I'll be jealous of you. :p

Computer and Electronics / 16tb Storage For $1,500
« on: January 14, 2010, 05:05:10 AM »
Basically, I can get something like this for the LBT Server (though I'd most likely put this on my personal server instead):

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...8011&CatId=4274

I can actually get it for about $300.  Then the 2tb hard drives are $150 each for a total of $1,200 for the hard drives.  I'd end up with 16tb for only $1,500.  That's actually a pretty sweet deal, especially since they'd be 7200rpm drives with 32mb caches and they'd be connected via eSata 3gb/s.  I'd probably stripe 'em seeing as I wouldn't want to mirror the sucker.  Then it'd be $1,500 for 8tb....a significant increase in price to about 18.2 cents per gigabyte.

When my financial situation gets a little better (yeah, it's in the dumps again), I might consider investing in something like this.  Heck, by then 2tb hard drives will probably be like $80 each. :lol

The Fridge / Reminiscing About The Past
« on: January 04, 2010, 02:15:59 AM »
People say I'm way too sentimental, and they're probably right.  But I just couldn't help but save screenshots of how things were years ago on GOF.

Back when we had that old (and if I may say so, not so great) scheme on GOF.  I must say, it took a while for me to embrace the green color, but I like it much better now.  Few of you were around back in the good old days.

Oh, and I realized that those screenshots have a 1,024x768 resolution.  Man things change.  Back when I first joined, I had a regular flat panel 15" monitor that had a maximum resolution of 1,024x768.

Thing sure change a lot through the years.  I would have never guessed back then that I'd be where I am today and doing what I'm doing.  The middle picture of my profile shows the relative date back then, but that was later than the first and last photos because I had over 1,200 posts then.

So, what do you think?  Am I too sentimental?  Did anyone else save screenshots like this?

Computer and Electronics / Holy Crap!
« on: January 03, 2010, 06:03:05 AM »
OMG!  Take a look at this server:

It can handle up to 58 Petabytes of storage!  That's 60,823,208 (nearly 61 million) Gigabytes!  Add to that the ability to have up to 127tb (130,048gb) of ram and holy crap, you could run the next Google!

They won't even give you a price, but I know that it costs nearly $100,000USD to build a standard storage server that has a storage capacity of 1 Petabyte.  This thing has 58 Petabytes!  It's gotta be like 30 million dollars!  It can handle 16 processors with up to 32 cores each.  There's not even 32-core processors out yet!

Geeze, what a server I could make if I had something like this.  Well, I guess if I make my own country I'll be able to buy something like this for the defense network.  I wonder how they get technicians with the skills to work on these extreme servers?  It must pay a s***load 'cuz they must get like 3 calls per year.

The fanart section of TheLandBeforeTime.org has been totally revamped.  It now has support for comments as well as your own member profile.  The general fanart page is located here.  This is where the link to your profile would go:

www.thelandbeforetime.org/fanart.html

You would also get your own fanart page.  The location of your fanart page would be similar to Malte's, and look virtually identical (except for the picture and personal info):

www.thelandbeforetime.org/members/malte.html

Guests and members alike can post comments on your user page.  If you would like your fanart posted on TheLandBeforeTime.org, please contact me via PM here, the contact form on the home page of TheLandBeforeTime.org, or you can email me directly at one of these email addresses:

The Fridge / New TheLandBeforeTime.org Website - Pre-Launch
« on: December 30, 2009, 11:49:51 PM »
Well, I wasn't really ready to launch the new TheLandBeforeTime.org website, but due to bad things that could happen to my Google ranking if I delay any longer, I'm launching it now.  It should be live in 15-20 minutes.  One of the pages isn't done, but I'll finish it ASAP.

Google seems to not like the fact that I've got more than 1 website hosted on the same IP address and it blocked my website.  Luckily, I can get it back on there quite easily.  I might have to pay for hosting if I want my Google ranking to go sky-high though.  We'll just have to see.

The Fridge / Bought a Drawing Tablet
« on: December 29, 2009, 04:51:53 AM »
Well, I decided that I wanted to take up drawing a while back, but I just couldn't get around to using that old pen & paper.  I talked to a couple of artists over at my favorite furry community, and they claimed that they couldn't do crap without a drawing tablet.  Hearing this, I decided to invest in one.  I bought this one today for $129:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Wacom+-+Bamboo...customerreviews

I must say, I'm impressed.  It took quite a while to get used to it.  It was harder to learn how to use this then it was to learn how to use a mouse. :p But I've got a rough grasp on it.  I must say, it's actually legible when I write in Japanese now:

Yeah, I know it still sucks, but you can actually read it!  You don't understand how TERRIBLE I am with writing and drawing.  Wish I could show you some of my writing when I took my Japanese class, but I don't have any of it anymore. :(

But anyway, I might even be able to draw now if I really practice.  I'll see what I can come up with and if it's not too embarrassing, I'll post it.

The Fridge / New TheLandBeforeTime.org Website Launches Jan 1st
« on: December 28, 2009, 08:54:35 AM »
I must say I'm very excited that the new TheLandBeforeTime.org website will launch so soon.  I just spent another 8 hours on it, driving the total amount of time spent on it to nearly 300 hours.  I'm very impressed with the new fanart section.  It's way more than I could have done with Freewebs.  So....3 days till launch.  It's gonna be great.  I'll still have the old website up for sentimental purposes, but it will no longer be updated.  The URL for the old site will be something like:

oldlandbeforetime.co.cc

As of now, the version of the site that's actually published is really old, so don't go by that.  A lot has changed in the version I have on my flash drive, and I plan to improve it even more.  A better fanfiction page is a must, so I'll get to that eventually.

Computer and Electronics / TigerDirect is Such a Joke
« on: December 26, 2009, 07:32:09 AM »
I used to heavily endorse TigerDirect.com, but recently it's gotten pretty bad.  The worst of all is their PC check.  It ranked my master dual core laptop a 3.0 out of 10 for performance!  Go ahead and rank you PC using their checker.  You'll get a ridiculously low score even if you've got a $1500 PC:

http://service.intelcapabilitiesforum.net/...pc/tigerdirect/

My master computer which kicks a$$ and can do almost anything only scored a 6.9/10.  My master laptop is almost a year old, so I could have accepted it if it got a 9.0/10 or maybe even an 8.0.....but a 3.0?  They're just giving your computer a low rating no matter what so you'll be encouraged to buy a new one! :anger

They used to have decent prices.  Not anymore.  22" Samsung monitor for $209?  Gimme a break!  It's worth $160 tops....at least online!  And this is on their SUPER SALE page to boot!

A 750gb external hard drive for $289.  Yeah....when?  2001?  $75 for a 750gb is not that great, and there's no way in HELL the drive was originally $289.  Maybe if it were like a 4tb (if they even had a hard drive that big now) or if it were 2001.

And $189 for a Core i5 750 processor. Gimme a break!  TigerDirect must have been bought out or something, because their prices are actual RIPOFFS now!  They used to be the cheapest place on the net for everything!  They'd even occasionally beat Crucial.com for ram prices!  Hell, I just bought 4gb of DDR2 800mhz ram from them for only $45 a few months back!  Now the same thing's like $80!  Technology should get cheaper as time goes by, not more expensive!

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING ELSE FROM TIGERDIRECT.COM!  They're ripoff artists now!  I don't know what the hell happened, but this really sucks!  I'm gonna have to find a new haven for cheap stuff.  Newegg's okay except for the fact that they're always running out of stuff.  God, I don't know what I'm gonna do now. :( Merry Christmas, eh?

Computer and Electronics / OMG!!! My First Computer!
« on: December 21, 2009, 02:50:32 AM »
Well, it technically wasn't "my" computer per say, but it was the first computer that I was allowed to use.  My grandmother never said I could have it, but she never took it away from me or told me I couldn't use it.  But my mother just gave me this ENORMOUS and HEAVY package.  Arrived a few days ago but she forgot to tell me.  So anyway, I open it up and look what's inside of it:

This was the computer I upgraded from MS-DOS 4.0 to MS-DOS 5.0.  This is the computer that I loaded Windows on for the first time (Windows 95).  This was the computer that I learned all the Windows keyboard shortcuts on because I didn't have a mouse.  This was THE computer!  The computer that got me into it all.  Here are it's glorious specs:

I swore I had sold this computer at a garage sale, but my Aunt found it in the attic and mailed it to me.  Whew does this sucker bring back memories!  It really struggles to run Windows 95, as it just barely meets the minimum requirements.  Oh, and I should add that I upgraded the hard drive and ram on this thing.  I put a whopping 750mb hard drive in it.  Much better than the 340mb that came with it.  I also upgraded the ram from 4mb to 8mb. :lol

Computer and Electronics / Email Address History
« on: December 20, 2009, 07:39:37 PM »
Pretty simple.  List the email addresses you've had throughout your life.  Might be a little difficult for our older members or people who like to change their email addresses a lot, but just try.

I should stress that these should be your Main Email Addresses ONLY meaning that email addresses you didn't use for at least a while shouldn't be listed.  Anyway, here I go.

My first email address of all time was when I signed up for AOL at the age of 7.  The email address was:

dameaustind@aol.com

My second email address was through PeoplePC.net.  It was:

dameprofessional@peoplepc.com (or .net.  I can't remember)

My third email address was through Gmail.  It was:

dameaustind@gmail.com

My fourth email address was also through Gmail.  it was:

dameprofessional@gmail.com

My fifth email address was through Gmail as well.  It was:

thecomputergeekoncamanoisland@gmail.com

I still use this email address quite frequently, but I really want to dump it.  It's getting spammed like you wouldn't believe.

The sixth email address was through Hotmail.  It was:

landbeforetimelover@hotmail.com

I opened it so I could use MSN.  I tried using it as my main email address for a while, but I really hate hotmail so I stopped using it for anything but MSN.

My seventh email address was through Comcast.  it was:

themaplegrovecomputergeek@comcast.net

I quickly changed it to:

sapphirescales@comcast.net

I'm trying to use this as my main email address, but I want to dump Comcast so I don't want to grow too dependent on them.

_________________

At present, I'm trying to change my main email address to:

lucario@email.com

I would love to keep Gmail, but their service is way too overused and therefore, there's no good usernames left.  I'm also going to have a computer service email address.  The one I've chosen is:

thecomputergeek@techie.com

I REALLY want to keep Gmail, but I need decent usernames and Gmail just isn't able to provide them.

Computer and Electronics / Taking Windows 7 for a Test Run
« on: December 18, 2009, 10:20:39 PM »
Well, it was about time to format my school laptop again.  I remember how long my battery lasted with the Beta of Windows 7.  My school laptop battery is getting pretty bad.  It only lasts 2 hours or so before it completely dies.  I decided to install Windows 7.  I was pretty disappointed that it didn't last any longer like it did in the Beta.  I must admit however, that the OS seems a LOT more complete than it did during the Beta.  It probably wasn't a smart idea to put 7 on there since I do a lot of Java programming for my AP programming class at school, but I haven't had any problems so far.

I can now say though that I HATE the new taskbar.  Having a huge icon is pretty useless.  It sucks having to hover over everything to see what it is.  You can change it to display like older versions of Windows, but the sucker is just too fat and doesn't look right! :anger I like how fast and stable it is, but as soon as I get the chance, I'm getting the Vista taskbar into Windows 7.

As for networking, it actually wasn't as bad as I thought.  It still worked pretty well with my existing network.  Will I be upgrading to Windows 7 anytime soon?  Probably not.  Vista does the job fine for me and I really don't have the money to be spending $150 a computer to put Windows on 'em.  The one I have on my laptop now is pirated but nothing has been done to it except bypass the activation.  It's going to be quite awhile before I have Windows 7 on all my main machines.

Oh, and I just wanted to say that I'm impressed with the driver support.  Good work with that MS! :D
