General Land Before Time / Signs of the Gang Growing Up

More obviously, he can talk now, and not just in roars like his parents.  Clever little guy, isn't he?

1988 Theatrical Release / should bluth have done?

I find that highly annoying then! Its like someone takeing your own characters and totally changeing everything about them...

To be fair, Don Bluth didn't even create the characters.  He did a lot of great work with them, no doubt, but he didn't create them.  That honour goes to the two people who are credited with creating the characters in all the LBT films.  In the original, they have the story credit, and in the sequels, there's always a bit in the credits that says "Based on characters created by such and such."

Yes, in case you haven't realised, I've forgotten the names of these people, but I do know that they weren't Don Bluth.

Character Discussion / chomper's parents

The original movie's sharptooth had lost an eye though which was not the case with either of Chomper's parents.

When did the original sharptooth lose his eye?  I recall getting hit in the eye on one occasion, but I thought he still had both his eyes in subsequent scenes.

At any rate, I think it's safe to say the original Sharptooth dies at the end of the first movie.  He was hardcore, but he simply couldn't swim because of his scrawny arms, so I can't see how he could possibly get out of that deep pond.

1988 Theatrical Release / An Odd Rumor
« on: August 17, 2008, 06:37:26 AM »
I'm fairly sure that if thoughts of a sequel had been on anyone's mind when the original was being made, then it wouldn't have taken six years for LBT II to come out, given that they've been able to bring out a sequel every year or two since then.

As for whether they were thinking of making the Great Valley heaven in the original, I'm in two minds about it.  There are a few lines that almost make it seem so (eg. "Some things you see with your eyes, others you see with your heart."), but I can't figure out how they would have done the ending without making the bulk of the movie seem pointless.

General Land Before Time / How tall is the gang?
« on: July 27, 2008, 02:23:54 AM »
Hmm, well if you can find out how big dinosaur eggs of a particular species were (should be possible, but I wouldn't know where to look), then you might be able to figure it out using one of the many hatching scenes in the movies and comparing the gang's sizes to the eggs.

General Land Before Time / how cera know she is the oldest?
« on: July 27, 2008, 02:20:38 AM »
Hmm, I don't immediately recall an instance of Cera saying she's the oldest (I'm assuming this is concerning the five main characters here), but let's see if I can find some justification:

Spike: obviously younger than any of the other four.

Littlefoot: roughly the same size as Cera (in the sequels at least, in the original she seems to be noticeably smaller from my recollection), and from a species that is supposed to grow to be way bigger than threehorns.

I can't think of any justification for her to think she's older than Ducky or Petrie.  Sure, she's bigger than them, but they're both from smaller species in the first place.

Character Discussion / The Sharptooth
« on: July 16, 2008, 05:08:35 AM »
Is it just me, or did the original Sharptooth have some insane athletic abilities?  I'm just reminded of that bit in the original where he leaps onto the back of Littlefoot's mother.  That would probably be roughly like you leaping onto the back of a horse, so that your feet wound up on its back, and you were standing up.

Seriously, I'm convinced if that shot had been done from a greater distance, it would look like something out of the Matrix.

As for the Sharptooth in general, he was what the movie needed - a major threat.  I can't really think of anything else to say.

General Land Before Time / The Crash... we didn't want to hear

Perhaps the writers are the only ones doing stuff so they decided to close down the office and stop paying the animators and crap for sitting around. They'll re-open the office once the writers come up with something.

Depending on how Universal Studios hire their writers for LBT, that might actually be the case.  While I think TV series generally have their wriyters in a semi-permanent state of employment, hiring writers for films tends to be a more one-off thing.  Obviously, something like LBT, which has put out many films at a fairly constant rate for a while now, could be anywhere between the two.

If we assume for the sake of argument that the LBT sequels work like most films, then it wouldn't generally be the writers who come up with the basic idea.  It would more likely be a producer or a director, for instance.  The writers would simply work out the specifics of the plot and write the script (which would probably be changed to some extent later).

In short, if they're just waiting on ideas, it would probably be producers (or possibly a director like Charles Grovesnor) who they're waiting on.  Producers could easily be working on other projects in the meantime, probably more easily than animators, who would form a much larger portion of the office's employees.

Writers, in the meantime, just get screwed, as tends to happen to writers.

Hopefully that made some level of sense.

General Land Before Time / LBT: What do you use it for?
« on: July 13, 2008, 10:14:14 PM »
Yes, I definitely find the movies to be very comforting.  Often, if I've got something big and important the following day (say, an exam or a wargaming tournament), I'll watch some LBT before I go to bed.  It might be a whole movie, or it might just be a few clips, but I find it helps to ease my nerves.

Of course, it would be so much more effective if I had some LBT plushies, especially one of Spike...

General Land Before Time / How would YOU End the Land Before Time
« on: July 08, 2008, 08:27:54 PM »
I'm not sure how I'd do it exactly, but I would kill off at least one of Littlefoot's grandparents.  You know, to get the whole "moving on" message across and all that stuff.

Oh, and an apocalyptic ending wouldn't work, because it specifically says in the original ending of the movie that the dinosaurs continued on for at least a few generations afterwards.

LBT Fanfiction / 1st Person Point of View
« on: July 03, 2008, 09:43:59 AM »
A few random thoughts - think of them what you will.

1.  The Land Before Time VI and VII both used a narrator who was also a character (Grandpa in VI, Petrie in VII, if I remember correctly).

2.  In the sequels, the narrator's role is minimal, and is really just to familiarise outsiders with the setting.  Most people would probably think this to be unnecessary in a fanfic.

At any rate, it should be possible to do a first-person LBT fanfic, but I think it would suffer from the same basic problem that plagues many first-person works - all the other problems get bigger as the story gets longer.  In my opinion, first-person works better for short stories than for long ones.  Perhaps you should consider trying a short first-person fanfic before moving on to longer stuff.

General Land Before Time / The Crash... we didn't want to hear
« on: July 03, 2008, 09:22:45 AM »
Definitely not the news I wanted to hear before I went to bed.  Before everyone panics, though, let's just work through any other possible explanations.  Is it possibly just reorganisation?  You know, moving offices, changing staff, stuff like that?

Yeah, I'm probably clutching at straws, but I think I have to, for the sake of my remaining sanity.

Welcome to the GOF! Hope you enjoy it here!

As for finding TV Episodes, there is a site that has them. Go here: http://www.landbeforetime.co.nr/

The link to Downloading TV Episodes should be on the left hand side. From there, it's super easy to either Download or watch the eps.

Have fun watching.

Note: The episodes are in a lower quality than what you normally see, but they are good enough to get a basic idea of what is going on.

Cheers for the link.  That site's down at the moment, but I'll take a look when it goes back up.

Yes, I meant of Watership Down when I said "Watershipper"  Aussies got the best dvd release by far.

Well, I haven't seen the movie (or read the book for that matter), but if Australia's got the best DVD release of it, I might need to check it out, if only out of some bizarre need to gloat about such a rare situation.

Welcome to the GOF! I'm a writer as well, as you can probably tell by my signature. See ya round!

An LBT/Star Wars crossover, eh?  First thing that comes to mind when I think of that involves Bron being temporarily voiced by James Earl Jones.  Definitely not the most random crossover I've seen in fanfiction, though - that little honour would go to a Sonic the Hedgehog/My Little Pony crossover fanfic I once saw.  Still, crazy crossovers are just one of the things that makes fanfiction fun.

You don't happen to live in Western Australia, do you? For that's where the first other land before time fan lives whom I ever got to know.

By an astonishing coincidence, I am from Western Australia (which I have to get out of the habit of calling WA - I think it makes people think I'm from Washington or something).

Welcome to the forum. Quite varied interests you have there. I hope you'll enjoy your visits here and make many friends also.

Yeah, my variety of interests probably aren't good for my wallet, but at least LBT doesn't leave too big a hole.

cute avatar.

Thanks.  It's amazing what you can find on Google images.  For instance, I had no idea there were so many LBT video games until I did an image search, of all things.

Are you a Watershipper by chance? Your topic line came right out of the dvd.

Well, my topic line was just an old cliche that came to mind.  Stereotypically said by British cops, I believe.  As for whether I'm a Watershipper, I have no idea what that is, so you'd better fill me in on the lingo before I answer that question.

1988 Theatrical Release / Tell Your Story About LBT
« on: July 01, 2008, 02:00:39 AM »
Well, my story is a little bit bizarre.  Apparently, my primary school showed us all the original Land Before Time a few times when I was little, but I have no memory of this, so it's difficult to say whether that had any lasting impact.  I certainly knew of the film and its sequels, but that was it.

At any rate, early this year I was looking through a rack of discounted DVDs at Target, and saw LBT 11 and 12.  If I recall correctly, my reaction was something the lines of "They're still making sequels to that?"  (Don't kill me yet, I'm going somewhere with this)

A couple of months later, I was looking through the kids' DVDs section at Kmart for some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles DVDs (which I didn't find), when I saw the DVD of the original Land Before Time for $16 Australian, which is a decent price for a DVD over here.  I half-considered buying it then and there, but for some reason I can't quite remember, I didn't.  A few days later, I still couldn't get that spectacular cover out of my head, as well as the mention of Lucas and Spielberg on the back.  I decided to take a punt on the film, and bought it.  It actually wound up costing me only $9, which I still consider the best $9 I ever spent.

It took me a few days to get around to watching it, as my parents' TV was broken so I was renting mine out to them.  When I finally watched it, it skipped to a ridiculous extent right near the end (still does occasionally, but a clean fixes it up), but I loved what I saw.  I was finally able to see the ending properly after I cleaned it with my proper CD/DVD cleaner, which took a bit of time.  Once I'd seen the whole thing I absolutely loved it.  The film simply has all the stuff I love in animated films - charming characters, great animation, great music, loads of emotion (I generally cry a few times whenever I watch it) and that undefinable "x-factor" that somehow raises things above the pack.

I was hesitant to get into the sequels - I'd watched the sing-along sequences contained on the DVD of the original and been less than impressed.  When Target put the films on sale, however, I couldn't help myself.  I wound up buying all of them, and am pleasantly surprised.  None of them are as good as the original, of course, but they've got their own appeal.

The Welcome Center / 'Ello, 'ello, 'ello, what's all this then?
« on: July 01, 2008, 01:45:51 AM »
Hi everybody!  As you've probably guessed, I'm new here, so I thought I'd make a topic here, since that's the purpose of this subforum.

I'm a fairly recent LBT fan, having just got into the series a few months ago.  That said, I've gotten into the series quickly, and have now watched all the movies.  I've yet to see any of the TV show, because I've yet to see any sign of it airing here in Australia and it certainly hasn't been released on DVD here (I generally only download stuff if I'm sure it's not going to be released over here, because it would just wind up clogging up my small hard drive).

As you've probably guessed from my username, my favourite LBT character is Spike.  Beats me why, I just find something adorable about him.

Aside from LBT, my other interests include:

Video games (Nintendo primarily)

Wargaming (Games Workshop stuff)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Transformers

Toy collecting (whatever I can find at retail that I like and can afford - sadly, no LBT toys to be found over here)

Writing (sadly, I haven't gotten the creative spark to do any LBT fanfiction, before you ask)

That's me in a nutshell.  I'm not the most frequent poster, but I daresay I'll make comments on a fairly regular basis, so see you all around.
