Hi!
Now I have acces to a fast internet connection again so I can post the Great Valley map here which I've mentioned before.
Note that I did not draw it. All credit for it must be given to a land before time fan who posted in the network54 LBT forum in July 2003 using the name Steven. His map shows the Great Valley and the surrounding land we see in the other sequels up to LBT 9.
A while ago I've also tried to draw a map of the Great Valley that should be based on the different information we get from the movies. Moreover I tried to include a
few landmarks in the Great Valley that I invented for my fanfictions.
However, I never finished the map. The greatest problem was that the information we get from the movies are partly very contradictory, especially in the second
movie. Some things we can say in general about the Great Valley are the
following:
It is surrounded by impassable rocks known as the Great Wall.
There is an uncertain number of entrances through the Great Valley of which
some are too small to be used by grownups, and some lead only out to small
rocky ledges on the outer side of the Great Wall (we see one of these in LBT
3 and another one in LBT 4). We see different ways that are passable for any
kind of dinosaur out of the Valley in the second, third, fourth, fifth,
sixth and eight movie. As they all look different (partly there are simply
broad gaps and partly there are rather narrow pathways leading up the Great
Wall) there have to be many entrances. The Great Valley is crossed by a
broad river that is depending on the movie more or leas meandering. In the
first movie we even see the river surrounding small crescent-shaped islands.
Maybe the rivers flow changes from time to time. There is one big waterfall
in the Great Valley known as "Thundering Falls" that seems to be the only
source of the river (otherwise it wouldn't have been that fatal when it
"dried up" in LBT 3) appart from that the Great Valley has a number of
different water-holes and billabongs that we see in several different
movies. The Big river that crosses the Great Valley is not unlikely to have
some side branches as we repeatedly see the characters at creeks, brooks, or
streams that look much smaller than the great river. Large parts of the
great Valley are covered with forest or jungle, but still there are big open
fields. Depending on the movie (or the part of the Valley we see) the floor
of the Great Valley is either quite level or rugged with hills, rocks and
boulders. There are some kinds of tar-pit that are shown in the sixth and
refered to in the seventh movie. These tar-pits seem to be quite shallow as
nobody seems to consider it dangerous that the kids play in it (though such
tar pits were true "fossil-makers" and are today a treasure pits for each
paleontologist). A dangerous place seems to be the "sinking sand" (second
movie), a marsh or deep pit of quick sand.
In the second movie we see a volcano located at the edge of the Great Valley
that nobody seems to consider as a threat either (it will be important in my
current story). A rather interesting part of the Great Valley is shown in
the sixth movie. Saurus rock is located at the outskirts of the Great Valley
and these outskirts seem to be rather secluded from the rest of the Valley.
It seems to be placed on a high plateau as a high rocky wall needs to be
climped to get to it (I don't understand how Littlefoot's grandfather made
to get up there). Moreover a deep gorge needs to be crossed that seems to
seperate the part of the plateau with saurus rock from the rest. The gorge
seems to have open ends in the Mysterious Beyond and thus would be another
entrance to the Great Valley (or at least to the secluded plateau on which
Saurus rock is standing) which allows sharpteeth to roam in that part of the
valley and Doc to leave it from there. There are also some things we learn
about the immediate surroundings of the Great Valley. There has to be a huge
wasteland to the east (it's the area Littlefoot and the others migrated
through in the first movie) and nearby has to be the pond where sharptooth
fought his last fight. To another direction has to be a rather dry rocky
land somewhat resembling a desert (though maybe I've exaggerated it a bit in
my story). It's the area Littlefoot and Ali had to cross in LBT 4 to get to
the land of mists. Finally there has to be quite a number of high mountains
that we see especially in LBT 7 and LBT 8. The Great Wall might be part of a
bigger mountain chain. Despite all this information I fear that it is
impossible to create a map of the Great Valley that would be generally true,
but still it will be a lot of fun to try unless you take the matter too
serious ;-)
