'Fraid not! But I wonder, perhaps, if Hypnobrai will be the next one of us to grace this thread?

LBT Fanfiction / Fanfiction Prompt Challenge Discussion
« on: August 05, 2017, 11:18:06 AM »
Alright! As per Darkwolf's suggestion, the results were decided via coin flip.

Rhombus- LBTLover's prompt: One of the gang realizes they have a crush on someone and they try to deal with it (seek advice, tell that someone, etc).

Fyn16- Darkwolf's prompt: One of the gang loses respect for somebody they care about deeply. What was the incident that caused this, and how do they deal with it?

We both look forward to the challenge. While I believe we'll be trying to finish Sovereign's from the previous month first, you can expect a result from us sometime before Season 2 (and hopefully sooner than that!) Thank you both again for your contributions this month, and I do hope you'll be encouraged to enter them in the coming fanfiction awards voting!

Awesome! Thanks Fyn!
I posted my prompt in the prompt discussion page. I don't have a preference if either you or Rhombus decide to tackle it. I kind of made it open for everyone to try if they want to.

By the way, do you have any ideas/scenarios you want to see for my upcoming Arya & Chomper series?

Thank you again!
Personally (though I don't know if you want to backtrack or not) I'd like to see a retelling of Chomper's and Arya's first meeting, perhaps in a flashback or as a standalone piece. For future events, however, kids are as much of a source of adventure as anything! Imagine Chomper's shock if, ironically, it was his kids that were sneaking out to go adventuring as he once did. Then of course there's Arya who has many avenues to go down for further development. Adversity can be a great starting point. Maybe she has to hunt for the family if they fall I'll. Or you could try digging into her character through the teaching of her children in the ways of the world. You can do anything with her, and with Chomper, you already have a solid character foundation on which to build. Take them in whatever direction you wish!

If you need help starting something, I always start by envisioning the characters two ways: how they start and how they will end up. From there, I flesh out the story that takes them from point A to point B. You may have a different approach, of course, but this is how I try to get my development rolling. I also tend to listen to music and imagine my characters in corresponding situations, a tactic that is surprisingly effective. But you do what works best for you!

Sounds good! I'll take note of the prompt and inform Rhombus. Darkwolf, when yours is in we'll decide who will write for which one, and then we'll get the ball rolling!

Okay.
You have my attention. Now I'm interested.

Seriously though, this is right up my alley! I love OCs! My only question- will the RP be written in present or past tense?

Just as a further heads-up in case you didn't see the voting page, you and Darkwolf tied for this month's winner, so if you're interested in creating a prompt for either Rhombus or myself to work on, you can do so, just let me know or check the prompt discussion page if you're interested.

I am literally fangirling right now! My favourite LBT writer likes my fanfic!  :wow  I know that the length is not that great, but I blame that on my self-imposed short deadline. Whoops!

Hey, that's awesome! I can't help but chime in here that's nice to meet a follower of my writing! But on the subject of your story- one of the original points of the fanfiction prompt challenge was indeed to encourage discussion, and as far as I know, you're the first to actually start that! So I say, good on you for that! We encourage brainstorming and idea-swapping among writers, so I'm sure there are quite a few of us, including myself, who would be happy to help you turn this into a larger plan. I, for one, will continue to watch this space. Let us know if we can help out in any way!

LBT Fanfiction / Fanfiction Prompt Challenge Discussion

Hello everyone! It's that time again. Time for Rhombus and myself to announce the winner of the previous months' prompt challenge- the last challenge of this event's first season. We only had two participants this time around, and due to the low turnout, both he and I have agreed on a solution which should recognize both authors equally for their contributions. Normally, we'd hold a tiebreaker, but between Darkwolf's and LBTLover's fics, our own criteria brought the competition between the two to a draw. Both authors, consider that a testament to your writing abilities! Both stories were equally good short fics that addressed their respective prompts while also proving to be well-written and engaging, and as it was hard to pick from them, we were forced to settle on two potential awards. So with that being said- Darkwolf and LBTLover, here are your options:

-Perhaps the more interesting of the two choices here, each of you will have the opportunity to create a prompt for us to write on. Between the two of you, decide who will write the prompt for which user, and then present your prompt to that user once you are finished.

-If one or both of you do not wish to create a prompt, then, respectively, the other author will create a single prompt for both Rhombus and I, or there will be no prompt this time. Obviously, in keeping with tradition, we would prefer the winners to come up with prompts of their own, but I am aware of the pressures and time constraints often posed by the world outside of the internet. If it is not possible for one or either of you to create your victory prompts, then we will do our best to find another way of recognizing and awarding you equally.

(If this seems haphazard as all getout, it's because I'm writing this way too early in the morning. Please forgive me).

As a final note, I'd like to extend my thanks to everyone who participated in the prompt challenge for its first season. We had a lot of fun over the last few months, and even though participation tapered towards the end, I'm confident we can boost those numbers back up again with the changes we're making for season 2. When this was nothing more than a simple discussion between Rhombus and myself, I honestly didn't believe it would go anywhere. Just getting enough participants to have a fair vote was an achievement in and of itself, and now look at us! We have all contributed to the formation of this wonderful event, one which has, I feel, helped many of us grow as writers, allowed some of our writers the exposure their works might have needed, and brought out hidden talents in those of us who may never have tried fiction writing in the past. We've got all sorts here, and I'm impressed and more than a little proud in all of you who have helped to build this subsection of the community. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart, and I hope I'll see you all again when the fanfic prompt challenge's second season rolls out in October. See you there!

-Fyn

Saurus Rock: Member Hall of Fame / Award Voting 2017
« on: August 01, 2017, 10:53:15 AM »
You know, I've been here long enough. I think it's time I finally pitched in my two cents!  :DD

Fanart Award: Flathead770 . While my initial choice for this year's fanart award was going to be Darkwolf due to her high quality art and crazy attention to detail, I was pleasantly surprised when Flathead770 came seemingly out of nowhere to blow us away with show-accurate yet also deceptively simplistic traditional artwork. Upon further reflection, it turns out Flathead's actually been a member for a while, but this is the first I've seen of this talented individual's work. Of significant note is the piece that got me interested in the first place- a depiction of the Spinosaurus from the 12th film, a character which gets very little fan representation. I see Flathead as someone with great potential whose art is rapidly picking up interest among the community, so it is to Flathead that my vote goes this year.

Feedback Award: Sovereign . And how! I might have some bias here, coming almost strictly from the fanfiction side of this community, but Sovereign seems tireless in his consistent feedback throughout this forum's works, especially during this year's fanfic prompt challenge. I've seen him review nearly every new piece of writing that has graced these forum pages, and frankly I don't know how he does it. Not only are his reviews well-written, they are also fair and honest. His criticism is constructive, and his praises are incredibly uplifting. Personally, I've learned a lot by listening to his feedback, and I believe others have too. Sovereign wins this one in my eyes, no question.

Friendly Member Award: DaveTheAnalyzer . A (relative) newcomer, Dave has made a name for himself on here, both through his participation in "Land Before Time" board discussions and through his writing. While I personally have not interacted much with him, I have seen his conduct around other members and am very pleased to report that he is not only friendly in his interactions, but also raises points and questions that are incredibly thought-provoking and insightful (true to his name, I suppose!). I believe Dave has played a huge part in getting discussions going again, even without another film on the horizon to liven things up, and this is in large part due to his easygoing and intelligent nature. He's the number one pick in my book!

Proactive Award: Rhombus. Speaking of the fanfiction prompt challenge (yep, Rhombus- you knew this day would come  :smile  ), where would that event be without Rhombus to spearhead it? Starting way back in December, I approached Rhombus with the idea of starting a prompt challenge, only to find that he had been planning the exact same thing. Once planning was underway, he was instrumental in starting up a new, fresh, and fun writing event that I believe completely revitalized the fanfiction section of the site, even if it slowed down towards summer. Thanks to Rhombus's work, the prompt challenge became an organized event rather than a flash in the pan, allowing new and experienced writers alike to show off their skills. He's always been available to discuss new ideas, plan fun little announcement pranks, and work with whatever snags we encounter along the way. Again, I may be biased here, but I feel the prompt challenge is one of the biggest things to come out of 2017 on this site this year, and Rhombus's role cannot be understated. In my eyes, this is where the Proactive Award should be going for 2017.

Phew, OK, instead of go through and try to fix all of the broken links in this thread right now, I might just re-post my more recent artworks in batches of 2 or three as an image "anthology" of sorts. While it kind of leaves the rest of the thread out of context, it should at least buy me some time to go back through the thread and slowly fix things at my leisure :smile

If anybody is super opposed to this, let me know!
Sounds good to me! I think I might have missed a few anyway. Gives me a chance to catch up :DD

Your first submission to the GoF prompt challenge is, if I do say so myself, a very entertaining and well-written initial piece! As they say, now that's how you make an entrance!

I think many of the plot elements within your story have been covered by other reviewers already, but I'd like to point out that I'm really impressed by how natural your OC and a canon character (that is to say Arya and Chomper) interact with each other. Oftentimes, OC and canon character interactions come across as forced, especially when those characters are romantically involved, as is the case here. However in this situation, I'm not feeling any forced romance at all. Arya reads like any other character in the series, with a visible personality (developed as well as one can within a short story), and a visual description that is easy on the eyes. Believe me when I say that a character's physical appearance can be a make it or break it for a story just as much as the author's writing style. Arya feels like a natural addition to the universe, and of all of the possible outcomes for the Chomper story, I think this is certainly one of the versions he deserves.

Of course, I try to offer a little criticism too, as I feel it'd be a disservice not to do so. The only thing that would make this story stronger, I feel, is length. Your characters are well developed, but with a little more time to flesh them out, it'd be easier for the reader to relate to them. This in turn leads to more impactful situations. While the loss of the third egg was certainly sad, I didn't feel that it was as much of an emotional gut punch as it could have been. Then again, perhaps this is what you were going for. With how many eggs probably never make it, perhaps losing a child is a sad but brief event. If that is the case, disregard what I just said.

Criticism aside, I really did enjoy my time reading this story, and I wouldn't hesitate to call this a solid first entry. If you do decide to expand on the Chomper/Arya story, I'll be eagerly awaiting more. Thank you for sharing with us!

I'm sorry to say it but I'm not going to participate this time. Neither of the prompts are simply not something I'd be interested in doing. I'll certainly participate in the future if I find the prompt itself somewhat intriguing but I don't think I'd be able to do anything decent with the current ones, sorry.
That's perfectly fine. Frankly, you're not the only one. Participation, as Rhombus has already said, has dwindled considerably over the summer, and while I can't speak for everyone, I'd imagine it's just the summer doldrums getting to everyone, as someone who has also experienced a lack of motivation to write. There are a few things Rhombus and I will need to consider, things we can implement when the next iteration of the fanfic prompt challenge goes live, and ideally, we'll be able to discuss them soon. In the meantime, don't worry about it. Your participation this year has been stellar already. I think we all just need some time to rest and recuperate.

And I should also let you know that I do plan on reading your story very soon. If not in the next few weeks, then definitely by the time the fanfic voting rolls around, assuming you plan to enter. Right now I've just finished catching up on "Mender's Tale," and I told JulianR94 that I'd give a look at his revisions for "The Eighth Hunter" as well, but once that's out of the way, I'll be back on track, more or less.

Hey guys! I'm not even sure why I felt it necessary to reintroduce myself, but I do feel that my lack of presence on the forums merits an explanation. So here we go!

I've been without internet for a while now, and recently got it back. That's about it. No crazy stories, no insidious plots, no ties to world-encompassing heists. Just me getting my internet back. Up until now I've had to use my phone at hotspots, so for those wondering why I've stopped posting, stopped writing, stopped drawing, etc, I have one simple answer: my thumbs can only type so quickly.

So that's about it. I'm back after about a month and a half of absence. No need to respond or anything of that nature, just an update from me! See you out there on the forums!
