Nope, sorry! Good try!
I was looking for:
"A Lightbulb."
A quick explanation:
I started hot and became cooler - Incandescent bulbs were replaced by cooler-glowing florescents and later LED bulbs, which are only barely warm to the touch.
but was hot before "cool"... - The incandescent bulb was invented in the mid 1800s. The word "Cool" started popping up in culture in the jazz era, in the early/mid 1900s: the hot incandescent bulb came before the use of the word "cool".
yet you can find me hot to this day. You can still go to a store and buy an incandescent light bulb. I've got a box of em a few feet away, as a matter of fact.
I am one result of an ideaAs often depicted in cartoons, the lightbulb over the head is one result of a character getting an idea.
and depending on needing,
You may seek me out or curse my very being. If you're in a dark place and need light, a lightbulb is amazing thing to have.
If, on the other hand, you're trying to sleep or having a glaring light shining on you, you may hate the very existence of that bulb.
Anyway, I'll let someone else give it a shot!
Whoever wants to, post up a riddle!
