Hey gang!

As some of you may have come to recognise by my "NOW PLAYING" tagline, I've been heavily into FF13. Just as a conversation starter, anyone obtained this title as a fan of the FF universe or otherwise? I've just hit chp11 and for those out there who haven't worked through the story so far I won't divulge plot developments.

Gotta say that Square Enix still top my ranks of graphical geniuses when it comes to games (and the occasional feature length movie). The game is as widely imaginative at it is visually stunning but as we all know, looks aren't everything. Gameplay is the normal FF formula. Run about, look at something funny, slap it about until it keels over, level up character and repeat. The dynamic battles look great coz everything is moving instead of everyone being rooted to the spot waiting for someone/something to give them a ear-clipping before retaliating accordingly. Roles return in a more modernised fashion and the switching of roles using the Paradigm (pronounced para-dime) system makes the combat malleable. A few digs with this new fight system is that you can now only control 1 character whilst the other 2 party members are AIs. They work well enough but you don't feel in complete control of your party as in previous installments. My other major grind (besides the major grinding you have to do to level up at a given point in the story) is the almost embarrassing linearity of the world roaming. You literally follow a restricted corridor with the occasional branch path just to U-turn and rejoin the main carriageway. Still, this is one low point that can be tolerated for the greatness the FF universe can developed. The HD version almost made my eyes bleed the first time I saw it and well...I've been waiting for this game for small ice age (it's seems).

Anyone else wish to express their T&Vs (thoughts and views) on this latest installment...please do so below! ;)

Hey guys!

Just like the other topic in the Silver Screen section, thought we'd do the same here. So, give us a lowdown on what you're currently gaming on, what you're trying to achieve and how well it's going.

Currently playing Darksiders. Hunting down the third boss having just been reunited with War's horse Ruin.

LBT Fanfiction / BOSE and BOSE II
« on: October 31, 2009, 09:28:51 AM »
Hey guys!

Having thought about it for a while and seeing the grand spectrum of awesome fanfics created by our own members here, I thought (as old a dog as my story is now), I may as well throw my fic in the mix too. For those of you who haven't read my story, it's basically a fantasy-styled fic involving a human boy from an apocolyptic future of London "time-travelling" (that term used very loosely) back to the realm of the dinosaurs by way of a strange power infused into a special stone. He holds one of three stones, with Littlefoot the keeper of one also. Trouble ensues as humans invade the Great Valley in search of these stones to be used for questionable purposes. The prose is kind of a mixed bag of different references taken from movies and games I like by way of inspiration or for cameo appearance. Very hit and miss depending on whether or not the reader is into the same things I am and whether they can see the reference but it seems to work out  (just!). I think in my Q&A page in the "Ask Me" section, someone asked me what my references were. A few are named but there are plenty more. :DD

I finished BOSE in 2006 and have since been working on its sequel (painfully slow progress; as anyone waiting for an update will know :oops) but I thought I'd stick a discussion topic up here for anyone who wanted to maybe talk about my running series. Feel free to ask any questions about either story or suggest something maybe you'd like to see in BOSE II. I'm always open to ideas and I'm always looking for feedback as to how I can improve my story. Constructive criticisms are always welcome and valued.

Since BOSE is 84 chapters long, I won't post the whole story up here. The link to it's place on FF.net is below. What's done of BOSE II: Corruption's Curse can also be found on FF.net but seeing how things go, I might post up future chapters here too.

Anyway, thanks guys! Would appreciate the input if you have the time ;)

Gamers Zone / Gamers' Wishlist

Hey guys!

Every gamer has a handful of titles that they just can't wait to get their paws on. With eyes set on the gaming horizon, from one gamer to each other, feel free to share your wishlist and wanna-own titles here along with a few words explaining if you so desire.

Here's mine:

Uncharted 2: Having played the first one and loved it, this newest installment looks to be every bit as fun, immersive and brutal as it's predecessor. Can't wait for this one!

Bioshock 2: Another sequel I'm gunning for. I mean, c'mon! You get to parade around as a Big Daddy! Who can't love that?! Since it's promising to be every bit as creepy and twisted as the first one. I'm gonna be up front for this one too

Modern Warfare 2: Easily one of the top notch FPS of the modern day. I've already got a deposit laid down for this when it is released on 10th Nov! Looking forward to the Co-op campaign mode for this one but I doubt I'll be forking out for the limited edition Night Vision Goggles though  :lol

I'll stick with those 3 for now...anyone else wanna show what they're looking forward to? The floor's open ;)

Seems to be the running trend around here and since I've been outta the fray for nearly 2 weeks, thought I'd join the crowd!

Ask me anything... LBT, video games hints/tips/cheats/reviews, what British weather is REALLY like or even next week's lottery numbers! (please note: a percent of the winnings will be required for such information. Going rate is 100% of the winnings).

So fire away...

The Fridge / A Video Premiere
« on: July 09, 2009, 05:54:47 AM »
Hey guys!

I just got this in from a great friend of mine. We were working on a film project that he does periodically for the school he works for. Long story short, at the end of every school year, he sets up a funny skit or video involving the teachers and other members of staff for the entire school populus to watch before they break up for the summer hols. This year he got me involved and we decided to do a little musical number. He got me as one of the starring roles in this one.

The skit is, the teacher featured is infamous at his school for his inability to dance so we did the characteristical opposite and set him up on this musical dance vid (as demonstrated at the start  :lol). But the laugh comes when we cut to a shadow and he suddenly explodes into a dancing frenzy!

Having spent enough time working on this, I thought I'd share it with you guys. The kids at my friend's school haven't seen this yet (but I'm guessing none of you will leak this to them LOL  :DD). Lemme know what you think:

Ladies and Gentlemen...without further ado...I present to you...

Please do enjoy ;) And NO flash photography please!

Gamers Zone / Trophies and Achievements...
« on: June 19, 2009, 05:35:57 AM »
An interesting (and almost fiery) debate I had with my brother the other day. He can't be arsed with obtaining PS3 Trophies whereas as I love working towards them! It's not a major reason why I play games but I do like having the sense of achievement and having something to work towards besides getting to the end of the game. What makes me laugh though is that, on comparison of our trophy collections, he actually has a better trophy count than me and he claims he doesn't try for them...

*sings* Irony... :lol

What about you guys?

Gamers Zone / E3 2009 Hitlist!
« on: June 05, 2009, 09:45:24 PM »
Hey fellow gamers!

Anyone been keeping in touch with the latest E3 news?! By the sounds of it there are some huge titles on the way across all platforms for the end of this year and the start of next. Some big surprises announced on the gaming front including these hot hitters:

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Yoshi's in this one as a rideable character!
New Legend of Zelda Title - it was only announced but nothing released in terms of footage
Metal Gear Solid: Rising - Raiden's story as to how he becomes how he does in MGS4 (so it is speculated)
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker - the bridging story between MGS3 and what was to become Outer Heaven in the first Metal Gear game back in the 80s
Trico - From the makers of the PS2 smash hit ICO and Shadow of Collossus
Metroid: Other M - With the Prime series over, this all new Metroid adventure is under development of Team Ninja (the same guys that made Ninja Gaiden and NG: Sigma series). Unlike Prime, demo videos show a much more dynamic pitch shift jumping from 1st to 3rd person perspective whilst showing off some stylish Samus flair
The Conduit - Wii's hardcore shooter is grounds for some serious competition for those who think the little white box is just for kiddies!
CoD: Modern Warfare 2 - not much need to be said for this. Kinda goes without saying
God of War 3 - Bloodier and more brutal than ever. The final chapter of Kratos versus the Gods of Olympus. Seriously, you could become a surgeon after seeing the body parts fly about in this game!
Uncharted 2 - the first one was great and this one looks even better!
Assassin's Creed 2 - Now set in the Italian Renaissance peroid, a descendant of Altair takes to the streets with all new moves, new weapons...and the ability to swim (chants: HALLEUJAH!)

Those are the ones that peaked my interests...anyone got any others? Failing that, any other news on what's been shown? looks like

Gamers Zone / Game Over Man! Game Over!!!
« on: April 20, 2009, 09:46:31 AM »
Hey gang!

As with any medium that you effectively engage with, there are gonna be things you like and obviously things you don't like. Thinking about it the other day in convos with other friends, we were discussing what elements, mechanics or logistical factors about video games that we really DIDN'T like. So what about you guys? I'm not talking game TITLES per se, I'm talking about what going into the game. The nuts and bots that really get your gripe. Feel free to express said gripes here (with examples if you so wish):

As for me, I can't stand dodgy cameras! The camera is supposed to be your window into the gaming world and there's nothing worse when your camera is so horribly inresponsive or gets stuck in a position that is of no benefit to you whatsoever! Given examples - ANY THING BY SONIC TEAM! These guys are terrible with camera mechanics and they just can't seem to get it right! There are plenty of examples out there of how cameras should operate but why can't they take a leaf outta their books. Previous installments of Resident Evil were also a pain. I know the whole static camera was supposed to generate a sense of eerieness and atmosphere, but it's bloody annoying when you've got an enemy off screen, your character aims at it but you can't see if you're hitting it, missing it or if it's dead or not. Thankfully they changed that all with RE4 and RE5 with the chasing cam and over-the-shoulder aiming mech.

I've got the first rant...anyone else wanna add anything?

General Land Before Time / LBT 5 VHS vs DVD inconsistancy
« on: February 11, 2009, 06:02:16 AM »
Hey gang!

Listen, does any one have LBT 5 on VHS and/or DVD? The reason I ask is because I've noticed that one format lacks a minor bit of content compared to the other. When Littlefoot and the gang meet up with Chomper's parents and Littlefoot asks "Gosh, I wonder what they're saying?" After Cera's usual mocking response, this is where the difference lies. The VHS version supplies subtitles as a means of translating what Chomper's folks talk/roar at him regarding the gang's arrival. In contrast, these subtitles are removed from the DVD version. Wonder why they didn't carry them across? It can't have been that much of a budget buster just to shift over some text from one format to the other right?  :lol

Gamers Zone / Ultimate Gamesmaster Quiz
« on: January 20, 2009, 08:50:07 AM »
Hey gang!

Thought, just for a giggle, we'd host our own Video Games Quiz. I'm aware there is already one in the Party Room but that has remained dormant for a while so I thought we'd start afresh. As with the other quizzes, one person asks a question, the first person to post with the correct answer gets to ask the next one. Clues can be given if after a few tries no one's got it right. Questions can be absolutely anything relative to video games.

Let's see how we fair eh?  ;)

What was the initial intended name for Nintendo's latest home console before it was officially changed to "Wii"?

Hey gang!

Now happily into the new year, what gaming titles are you most looking forward to? Discuss (or just name them if you prefer) here.  :D

Here's my wishlist:

Resident Evil 5 (PS3)
F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin (PS3)
Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop (Wii)
Chrono Trigger (DS)
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP)
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (DS)
Final Fantasy 13 (PS3)
God of War 3 (PS3)
New Zelda Title (Wii) (Not 100% sure if that's 2009 or 2010 release)

Suppose that's it for now, can't think of any others but I'm sure they will come! ;)

The Party Room / Chuck Norris Rumour Game
« on: December 29, 2008, 07:24:03 AM »
Hey Gang!

Probably million of versions of this game but thought we'd go with an all action hero we all know. Basic gist of the game is, someone sets up a scenario regarding Chuck Norris and the next poster along has to finish the rumour of how he did it whilst boasting his awesomeness.

Example:
Poster 1: Did ya hear about Chuck Norris and the phonebooks?
Poster 2: Yeah, he ripped 20 of them in half using only his pinkies!

:lol Ya get the idea...I'll kick start it... :lol

"I heard Chuck Norris once rescued a little girl's cat from a tree..."

Gamers Zone / GOF Game of The Year 2008
« on: December 29, 2008, 07:00:22 AM »
As 2008 draws to a close, we've seen a collection of great games released in the past 12 months. With all the gamer mags and online websites posting up their given choices for GOTY '08, what would you pick as the most iconic title of the gaming industry for 2008 and why?

(Please respect each other's choices. No bantering why one's better than the other. This is not a competition or full scaled award ceremony or anything...just what you personally think)

For me personally, I'd probably say Metal Gear Solid 4. The storyline is sublime, (connects pretty much every loose end in the series since the first ever Metal Gear back in 1986). The cinematics are great (if not a little too long at times), the action is excellent and the character portrayal is awesome. Hideo Kojima has vacuum sealed this series with a pinnicle ending that brought an iconic video game character whose popularity rivals that of greats like Mario, Sonic et al. It has great replay value (so many guns to collect!) and the online mode is a great addition (one I didn't actually see coming until it was almost here :lol) MGS4 is what I'd pick for 2008 GOTY!  ;)

Computer and Electronics / WARNING to Internet Explorer Users!
« on: December 16, 2008, 08:00:09 AM »
Hey guys!

I has been announced on the news that Internet Explorer (IE) has encountered a serious security flaw whereby potential hackers and cyber criminals have the ability to seize control of your computer and gain access to personal data and security passwords. This is no spam mail, this was on national news so there has to be a greater amount of genuinity to it. MS are advising all IE users using ver 7 (or higher if there are any) to use a different browser like Firefox, Opera, Safari etc as these are not reported to have this flaw. A security patch is being worked on and should be available soon. Extra vigilance has been advised...careful out there guys!

Gamers Zone / Wii Speak
« on: October 08, 2008, 03:02:40 PM »
Hey gang!

I was on my usual rounds of gamer websites when I came across a rather interesting article on Gamespot.com. Ever wanted to play your Wii games online and be chatting to your pal at the same time? Ever wanted to side-swipe your mate in Mario Kart and laugh at him as he falls off Rainbow Road? Every wanted to hear your friend hiss in pain as you smash him off the screen to win your latest Brawl?

Well...NOW YOU CAN!!! Well, soon anyway... :DD

Nintendo have apparently announced "Wii Speak" which is a custom made unit that allows you and your Wii Console Registered Friends (i.e. registered to YOUR console) to speak to each other through a downloadable channel from the Wii Shop Channel! So far, the only named game it is to work for is the upcoming Animal Crossing title for Wii due out soon. Release dates for this new pherphial is (according to Gamespot):

16th November (US) - approx $30
5th December (UK & Europe) - approx £32

Nintendo apparently, initially didn't want to have voice chats going over their online servers because they didn't want the trouble with abuse, swearing and cyber-bullying that normally occurs on the Playstation Network and 360's online services. I think they're trying to protect themselves, whilst permitting it, by only allowing friends who have swapped each other's Wii console codes to enable chats with each other.

Either way it sounds great! Here's the article I found from Gamespot if you wanna check it out for yourselves:
