Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 03, 2008, 01:43:36 AM
There are puzzles that have eluded mankind for centuries.  Even though these puzzles are hard, they all have one thing in common, there is an answer to each one.  Think you can solve them?  Be my guest.

To start off, here's a puzzle for ANYONE to answer.  After this, the real test begins.

Note: If you can't guess this, then you don't stand a chance as this is the EASIEST of the puzzles.

Here's the puzzle:

Point value: 10

Ten candles stand burining in a dining room.  A strong breeze blows in through an open window and extinguishes two of them.  Checking back in on the candles later, you see that one more candle has gone out.  To make sure no more flames go out, you shut the window.  Assuming the wind doesn't extinguish any more candles, how many candles do you have left in the end?

-------------

Best of luck to ya. :)

Remember, only after someone guesses correctly will the game really begin and the real rules be posted.  So if you want others to play, you'd better start solving it.

Just remember, I wouldn't call it "Ultimate" if I thought you had a chance. :D

10 candles. 7 are still lit but there are still 10 candles total.

Wrong, Flathead! (Geez!  That sounded like an insult when it didn't mean to.)

Think about what the puzzle is really saying.  It's asking how many are "left in the end", but what does that really mean?

You can try again if you dare, Flathead.  However, for YOU the value will only be 8 points.  Think of it as punishment for not being smart enough to figure it out.

The rest will still earn 10 points if they get it right.  Sorry, but those are the breaks.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Stitch on April 03, 2008, 09:18:40 AM
The answer is 3.  The others will be pools of wax in the end.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 03, 2008, 11:17:34 AM
Correct, Stitch!

The seven candles that manage to stay lit will melt down completely.  The only candles that remain in the end are the three that are extinguished by the wind and therefore stay intact.

Congrats!  You earn the full 10 points. :)

-------------

Now, for the REAL game.

Here's how it all works from here on out.  The one who got it right has the honor of picking the next categoric questiion.  The questions are split into point value.  They not only represent how much they're worth, but also how difficult they are.  The more it's worth, the harder the question.

ANYONE can answer the question.  Only those that get it right earn the points.  However, only the FIRST to guess it right gets the honor of picking the next category.

There's a limited amount of questions to each category.  Once it runs out, the category will be made into red text to represent it as such.

Be warned.  If you guess wrong, the value will lower for YOU speciffically as punishment.  Let me give a fine example:

Person A gets a 10 point question wrong.  It is now worth 8 to this specific person.

Person A trys again and gets it right, earning only 8 points.

Person B gets the same 10 point question right on the first try and earns the full 10.

Person A gets the honor of picking the next one due to being the first to guess right.

Understood?  Good, because it's about to get a bit more complicated.

Hints are allowed.  However, you are only limited to 10 for the WHOLE GAME!  So only use them when you're REALLY stuck.  Some puzzles hold Hint points on top of main value points.  You get them right, and you earn the Hint Points.

Hints will only be given to the SPECIFIC person by PM to keep them secret to the others that participate.  The person who I give the hint to must not share it with ANYONE on the forum.  Failure to comply will result in disqualification from the game.

You are limited to 3 hints per question, so use them wisely.

You will not be penalized for asking for a hint.

Now, for the categories:

10-points

15-points

20-points

25-points

30-points

35-points

40-points

50-points

60-points

70-points

80-points

100-points

Bonus

-------

Now, let me talk about the Bonus.  This is where you really risk it.  In the Bonus, you get to "wager" your points as well as your Hint Points.  For this, you, and you alone, get to answer it.  However, you get ZERO hints.  You get it right, you earn what you wagered.  You get it wrong though, and you lose them.

If you pick BONUS when you have ZERO points, you risk your allowment in the game.  If you get it right, you earn 50 points.  You get it wrong, you are out of the game.

Game ends at the end of the month and only the one with the most points will be given the honor of the title of "Ultimate Puzzle Solver".

Now, with us all familiar with the rules, let us begin.

Stitch, pick a category. :)

Let's start off with a 25-point question.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 03, 2008, 03:17:53 PM
Score so far:

Stitch: 10 points (10 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

------------------

Okay, 25 points to WHOEVER gets the following one right.

Oh, what luck!  It's also worth one Hint point!

So, For 25 points and One Hint Point:

Five cats can catch five mice in five minutes

With that in mind, how many cats can catch 100 mice in 100 minutes?

---------

Good luck!

100? (I'm not good at puzzles, or Math for that matter :lol )
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Clawandfang on April 03, 2008, 04:27:38 PM
I reckon five cats.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: LBTFan13 on April 03, 2008, 04:48:15 PM
100 cats?
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 03, 2008, 07:00:10 PM
Clawandfang is right!

The five cats can catch five mice in five minutes.  If the hunt continued, then the same five cats will be expected to catch 10 mice total in 10 minutes, 20 mice in 20 minutes and so on.  The amount of mice they catch all depends on how long the hunt goes.

Clawandfang earns the full 25 and the extra hint point.

Scores so far:

Stitch: 10 points (10 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 25 points (11 Hint Points)

LBTFan13: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

-------------

Calwandfang, pick the next category. :)

I accept your challenge. These puzzles are actually very easy to solve for me.

Yea, I got the first two right, and was just too late to post (just read it now) XD

I'll join :) I do puzzles like this for the Enigma Puzzle but there's more searching involved in those XD

Okay, let's go for something slightly harder. 30 point puzzle please.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 04, 2008, 08:12:45 AM
All right, for 30 points:

The first letter of the alphabet is A, and the letter B comes after the letter A.

However, the letter you need to worry about is the last one.  What's the last letter of the alphabet?

Here's a hint: it isn't Z.

----------------------------------

Good luck to all.

I'll check back later! :^.^:
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Clawandfang on April 04, 2008, 08:17:50 AM
I'm not too sure on this one, all I can think of is the letter "T".

I just want to double-check a rule with you. Let's say the answer was "T", could someone answer "T" before you confirmed the answer and still get the points?
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Tails_155 on April 04, 2008, 04:48:04 PM
Yea I'd think it's t as well
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: lbt/cty_lover on April 04, 2008, 07:14:23 PM
Agreed. I believe that "T" is the correct answer.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 05, 2008, 01:31:27 AM
Clawandfang, Tails_155 and lbt/cty_lover all got it right.  All three of you earn the 30 points.

However, Clawandfang is the one that gets the honor of picking the next one as he/she was the first to get it right.

So, scores so far:

Stitch: 10 points (10 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 55 points (11 Hint Points)

LBTFan13: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Tails_155: 30 points

lbt/cty_lover: 30 points

--------

Clawandfang, pick the next category.

Okay, going up in increments of five... a 35 point puzzle please.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 05, 2008, 08:15:00 AM
A 35 point question?  Okay!

This one though will be worth 1 Hint Point as well.

So, for 35 points and 1 Hint point:

When you weren't looking, someone came by and gobbled up your fish dinner.  The three brothers near the scene of this dastardly crime had this to say:

A: "Me?  Oh yeah, I ate it.  It was good too!"
B: "I saw A eat that fish right up!"
C: "B and I didn't eat that fish."

One of these three brothers is lying to you, but which one is it?

----------------

Good luck to all! :^.^:
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: lbt/cty_lover on April 05, 2008, 09:09:04 AM
This is a tough one. If it was assumed that only one person had all of the fish, then it is impossible for only one to be lying. Therefore, some of the fish must have been consumed by at least two people. Using this logic, I have come to the conclusion that "C" is the liar.

However, Clawandfang brings up a good point. The wording of the statement could make the comment a lie. So now I change my answer to "B". If it is allowed, of course.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Mumbling on April 05, 2008, 11:42:22 AM
... thats what i thought :o... !!

C
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Clawandfang on April 05, 2008, 01:02:15 PM
I'm not sure on this one either. We have to either go with what lbt/cty_lover said and say "c" (they couldn't both eat it.) Or we can go with "b" and say that despite A eating the fish B didn't actually see him. Part of me niggles away and tells me that this is worded wrong somehow...

I'll go with "c". It has a slightly stronger argument.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 06, 2008, 01:38:06 AM
The liar here is C.  A and C split your dinner and each ate half.

The answer becomes clear when you realize that if A is lying, B must be lying as well.  The same thing happens when you assume that B is the liar.  Therefore, the only possible answer is that C is lying, a scenario that only works if C actually did eat some of the fish.

This one was a little more complex because what it didn't pertain to was HOW MANY actually ate it.  This is what can confuse the reader.  Most would believe that only ONE ate it, and the idea of two rarely concepts to the reader at hand.

Now, since you changed your answer when it was correct, lbt/cty_lover, you sadly don't earn the points because your final guess was wrong.

Both Mumbling and Clawandfang got it right and earn the full 35 points and the 1 Hint Point.  However, Mumbling gets the honor of picking the next category.

-----------------

Scores so far:

Stitch: 10 points (10 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 90 points (12 Hint Points)

LBTFan13: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Tails_155: 30 points (10 Hint Points)

lbt/cty_lover: 30 points (10 Hint Points)

Mumbling: 35 points (11 Hint Points)

-------------

Okay Mumbling, your turn!  Pick the next category. :)

Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 06, 2008, 08:29:20 AM
Okay, you asked for it! :)

For 50 points:

Imagine a digital clock.  How many times will the clock display three or more of the same number in a row over the course of one day?

In case you were wondering, the clock in this puzzle displays time on a 12-hour scale, not on military time.

-------------------------

Good luck! :)
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: lbt/cty_lover on April 06, 2008, 10:43:17 AM
Hard, this is simple.

14.

Whoops! I missed one. And because of the repetitive nature of the common clock, that adds two to my original answer. It is actually 16.

Now I missed out on another one. My answer is now 18.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Clawandfang on April 06, 2008, 10:57:16 AM
Heh... I make it 34 actually. I assume we're using solar days here?

EDIT: Ah... after wondering why everyone had completley different answers to me, I had another look at my working outs and recalculated to:

16

It's a fairly subtle point I had to notice which allowed me to get this answer.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Stitch on April 06, 2008, 11:21:28 AM
The answer is 16.

That was a good challenge.

*buzzer sounds 4 times* Wrong to ALL!

Reduced to 45 for lbt/cty_lover, Clawandfang, Stitch and Mumbling.

Give it another shot!

Are you sure you haven't forgotten a few possible combinations?

Also, did you remember to double it for both am and pm?  Remember, I did say "over the course of one day". :)

Feel free to try again. :D
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Clawandfang on April 06, 2008, 07:29:46 PM
I'll be demanding to see a list of possible combinations after all of this... heh. Well... all I have left to me is my original answer of 34, which I don't believe to be correct, although I can see how one could argue that it was.

I have it. It is 36.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 07, 2008, 01:28:53 AM
Clawandfang got it right and gets 45 points.

Here are all of the possible combinations as proof:

1:11, 2:22, 3:33, 4:44, 5:55, 10:00, 11:10, 11:11, 11:12, 11:13, 11:14, 11:15, 11:16, 11:17, 11:18, 11:19, 12:22

There's 17 right there, and since it goes through each combination twice within the course of one day, it's 17 x 2, or 34. :)

The ones like 1:11, 2:22, etc. are VERY easy to find, but most people tend to miss ones like 10:00 or 11:12.

------------

Scores so far:

Stitch: 10 points (10 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 135 points (12 Hint Points)

LBTFan13: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Tails_155: 30 points (10 Hint Points)

lbt/cty_lover: 30 points (10 Hint Points)

Mumbling: 35 points (11 Hint Points)

action9000: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

--------------------

Okay Clawandfang, your turn. :)
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Clawandfang on April 07, 2008, 04:17:07 AM
I'd just like to point out what myself (and highly likely others) thought when we gave the anwser 16. The problem is deciding whether 11:10-11:19 count as nine separate instances of three digits in a row, or one big one. Despite the number displayed changing, there is no gap between each insatance, and so I would personally say that between 11:10 and 11:19 there is only one time when there are three digits in a row, but it lasts for just under ten minutes. You could easily argue the other side of the coin though.

Anyhow, another 50 point please.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 07, 2008, 08:27:44 AM
Clawandfang: I know some puzzles may be hard to grasp with the true answer when you finally figure them out, even with the explanation that ends up helping them make complete sense present.  However, the biggest trick is to take a closer look at the puzzle and fully understand what it is really saying.

With the most recent one, even a minute means the time is different, correct?  We humans have come accustom to rounding the time when we look at our watches.  This sort of thing also plays a role in tricking the mind with the previous question.  Normally, we would ignore them and our mind would think that they don't count.  Isn't it a shame when your mind tricks you like such and makes you get the wrong answer?

--------------

Now, here's the next one.

Oooo, you got a good one, it holds 2 Hint Points.

So, for 50 Points and 2 Hints Points:

While walking through a market on vacation, you notice a small stand selling cameras.  A camera-and-case set is selling for $310.  The seller tells you that the camera costs $300 more than the case itself and that the case costs the price of the set minus the cost of the camera.

You decide you'd rather wait on buying a camera and opt to just buy the case alone.  You hand the seller a $100 bill and see his eyes light up.  Think fast now!  How much change should you be getting back?

----------------

Good luck!
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: Clawandfang on April 07, 2008, 09:50:35 AM
The answer is $95. I enjoyed working this one out.

Also, in reply to your previous statement about each minute being a separate piece of time, by that argument isn't each second a separate piece of time then? I can see where you are coming from though.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!

Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 08, 2008, 01:31:03 AM
The correct answer is $95.

This is one of many confusing methods that swindling merchants have used for years.  There is a simpler way to figure it out:

Let x = cost of camera
Let y = cost of case

x=y+300
y=310-x

x=310-x+300
x=305, y=5

Therefore, the case costs $5, and you should get $95 change.

Yet, alot of us don't use simple algebric equations in our daily lives, and so we trust the merchant who is about to cheapskate us to give us the correct amount of money.  We really need to watch out for those swindling merchants, huh? :)

So, Clawandfang, Tails_155, Mornai and lbt/cty_lover all get 50 points and 2 Hint Points.

Score thus far:

Let's have an easy one... 15 points.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 08, 2008, 08:26:37 AM
Hmm, I seem to only have one 15 point question available, but let's go for it. :)

For 15 points:

Five suspects are called into police headquarters for questioning.  They give the following statements.

A: One of the five of us is lying

B: Two of the five of us are lying

C: I know these guys, and three of the five of us are lying.

D: Don't listen to a word they say.  Out of the five of us, four are lying.

E: All five of us are dirty rotten liars!

The police only want to release the suspects who are telling the truth.  How many people should they let go?

------------------

As soon as someone gets this, I'm putting in a new category.

So, good luck! :)
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!

Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: lbt/cty_lover on April 08, 2008, 04:59:22 PM
I  believe that the police should let go 1 person. This puzzle is simple logic. May I explain why it is simple to you via PM, pokeplayer?

And by the way, Iris, I love the Pirates of the Caribbean quote in your signature.
Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 09, 2008, 01:26:06 AM
The correct answer is 1.

Every suspect accused a different number of people.  If anyone was telling the truth, it had to be one suspect, no more or less.

The only suspect whose statement fits that condition is D.  Looks like this one is free to go.

---------

So, Mumbling, Clawandfang and lbt/cty_lover all got it right and get the full 15 points.

So, the score is:

Stitch: 10 points (10 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 50 points (12 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 200 points (14 Hint Points)

LBTFan13: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Tails_155: 80 points (12 Hint Points)

lbt/cty_lover: 95 points (12 Hint Points)

Mumbling: 50 points (11 Hint Points)

action9000: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

---------

Okay, now, I shall replace the 15 point area with something much harder...

A 70 point category. :D

Now, Mumbling, it's your turn. :)

Okay, Mumbling.  For 30 points:

SOS! Fifteen people are trapped aboard a ship that's going to sink in exactly 20 minutes.  Their only chance for survival is the five-person life raft stowed on their vessel.  To make matters worse, the waters around the ship are teeming with man-eating sharks, so swimming to safety is out of the question.

A round-trip to the nearest island and back to the boat takes nine minutes on the raft.  How many people will live to see dry land?

Good luck!

Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 10, 2008, 01:32:54 AM
The correct answer is 13 people.

In the first trip to the island, 5 people get on the boat.  Now, someone has to drive back to pick them up.  Since there's already 1 person in there, he can only pick up 4 more.  That's 9 thus far.  He goes back and only has the last chance to pick up another 4 because he's already spent 18 minutes rescuing as many as possible.  So, by the time the driver makes it to the island, the ship will have already sank and the last two people would be food to the man-eating sharks.

A moment of silence for the two that didn't make it, please.

------------

So, Stitch and lbt/cty_lover got it right! :)

Scores thus far:

Stitch: 40 points (10 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 50 points (12 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 200 points (14 Hint Points)

Luckily for you guys, there's only ONE at this level.  However, I made sure this one was HARD before picking it.

Here we go!

----------------

As many chess players know, the Queen can move all along the board in 8 different directions.

With that in mind, on this chessboard:

A1 A2 A3 A4 A5 A6 A7 A8
B1 B2 B3 B4 B5 B6 B7 B8
C1 C2 c3 C4 c5 C6 C7 c8
D1 d2 d3 d4 d5 d6 d7 d8
E1 E2 E3 E4 E5 E6 E7 E8
F1 F2 .F3 F4 F5 F6 .F7 F8
g1 g2 g3 g4 g5 g6 g7 g8
h1 h2 h3 h4 h5 h6 h7 h8

Place 8 Queens and so that they don't block one another's moves.

Note: For this puzzle, please put in the letter-number combo you think a Queen should be placed.

Note 2: To make things more interesting, each of you that answer must come up with different solutions.  In this puzzle saying something along the lines of "I agree with *insert person here*." does not count.

-----------

Hehe!  This should get interesting. :^.^:

I will first state that pictures weren't nessacary for this.  I could've checked them without such being provided.

Mumbling and Clawandfang both have correct solutions.  However, lbt/cty_lover got it wrong on the account that F6 and H8 are along the same diagonal, thus the Queesns block one another's movements.  Sorry, lbt/cty_lover.

This is the legendary 8 Queens Puzzle, which was put together by a Chess Master quite some years ago.  Thanks to a super computer, including rotations and mirror imaged answers, a total of 92 different possible solutions have been discovered.  Without including the above, there would only be 12 possible at most.  This is why I wanted everyone's answers to be different, because I wanted to see the creativeness you all held.  It is a nessacarity if you want to survive this challenge and come out on top.

---------------------

So, the score thus far:

Stitch: 40 points (10 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 50 points (12 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 300 points (14 Hint Points)

LBTFan13: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

lbt/cty_lover: 125 points (12 Hint Points)

Okay Mumbling, your turn. :)

I just want to make a suggestion. I think that we should give the times when we are on GoF normally in GMT. That way, we all have a chance to respond. Normally, these posts are made when I'm in school, so I get a probability of virtually zero of answering first.

Monday: 7:30 PM to 3:30 AM
Tuesday: 9:45 PM to 3:30 AM
Wednesday: 7:30 PM to 3:30 AM
Thursday: 9:45 PM to 3:30 AM
Friday: 10:30 PM to 3:30 AM
Saturday: 3:00 PM to 3:30 AM
Sunday: 3:00 PM to 3:30 AM

As I said, please convert to GMT, so that conversions into different time zones is much easier.

The big thing is you guys are all forgetting ONE thing, it's called ULTIMATE Puzzle Challenge.  It's meant to be difficult.  It's meant to hold a time limit that is unreasonable to some.  It just wouldn't be "Ultimate" without all I've done.  And if you think the Hint Points won't be nessacary, trust me, you'll NEED them. :)

If you guys really want there to be more time for others, I might as well give you all a HARD one for the 70-point area.

So, here we go, for 70 points:

The following equation requires one through nine to be used only once in the missing areas.  Finish the equation.

41,286-7,953=33,333

And, mrc mad, your solution is totally incorrect. Where is the "9"? And you reused "4" and "5".

Both Clawandfang and lbt/cty_lover got it right.

When forced to be done in such an arrangement, there are actually only 2 possible answers.  They are the following:

41286
-7953
33333

and

41268
-7935
33333

Figuring out this simply requires remembering the basics of subtraction.  Even with that though, this puzzle has eluded quite a number of people.  You may once in a while see it in puzzle books where it holds a different end solution, but the idea is basicly the same.

Correct, Mumbling!

Here they are:

9, 19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99.

I know that only looks like 19, but note that 9 appears twice in 99, thus making it 20.  Even if you count them out, it's easy to forget one along the way.

------------

So, score thus far:

Stitch: 40 points (10 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 15, 2008, 01:28:07 AM
Mumbling, Clawandfang, Stitch, lbt/cty_lover all got it right.

Indeed, the only possible answer is if they were both six years old.

If you were to take 2 away from the brother's age, he would be four and giving them to the sister would make her 8, thus making the sister twice his age.

Then, if you were to take away one more, the boy would only be three and giving that to the sister would make her nine, thus making the sister three times his age.

Many fall for this based on the account that it says "big sister" meaning that she is older, but you can't forget that even in the case of twins one is still older than the other, they're just a certian number of minutes apart and it's very easy to not apply that rule in the end.

------------

So, the score thus far:

Stitch: 80 points (10 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 50 points (12 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 410 points (14 Hint Points)

Okay, for 80 points.

And what do you know, 2 Hint Points up for grabs.

So, for 80 points and 2 Hint Points:

3 Queens have already been placed at e4, b6 and d7.  Place the remaining 5 Queens and so that all the Queens, including the ones already placed, don't block one another's moves.

Note: For this puzzle, please put in the letter-number combo you think a Queen should be placed.

Note 2: For this puzzle, your answer must include the three that were already placed in order to count.

Clawandfang, lbt/cty_lover, Stitch and Mornai all got it right.  With this puzzle, it was set up and so that there was only ONE possible solution.  There is no other way to set it up when those three are already given.

Oh and BTW, this doesn't count as being an 8 Queens Puzzle as the original tends to have you place all 8 of the Queens yourself.

-------------

So the score thus far:

Stitch: 160 points (12 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 130 points (14 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 490 points (16 Hint Points)

So, for 35 points and 1 Hint Point:

On Valentine's Day, your gadget-loving, technophile girlfriend gave you a most unusual slab of chocolate.  While the jumble of letters looks like nonsense:

Wow!  Can't believe so few answered this one.

lbt/cty_lover got it right.  The message "GRCY NW" is "TEXT ME".

The reason this tends to get alot of people, even for those that are good at "Crypto" puzzles (Everyone still remember my OTHER game?), we usually follow the rule of only ONE letter standing for another, so when two is represented, it can get us easily.

You notice now that two letters represent T and the same can be said with E.  The trick here is in your keyboard.  It is simply right next to the letter.  The only message that can really represent something your girlfriend trying to say something in this case is "TEXT ME".  It just takes a good look at your keyboard to figure out how it works.

So, the score thus far:

Stitch: 160 points (12 Hint Points)

Okay, for 50 points:

Imagine a Ferris Wheel ride at an amusement park.

This particular one has 10 2-seater cars attached to the Ferris Wheel.  The Ferris wheel turns so that one car rotates through the exit platform every minute.

The Wheel began operation at 10 in the morning and shut down 30 minutes later.  What's the maximum number of people that could have taken a ride on the wheel in that time period?

-----------------

Well, good luck to all. :)

Clawandfang, lbt/cty_lover, Stitch and Mornai all got it right.  However, before I give out the points, I will say this... lbt/cty_lover, I admire how you are being so honest with me here and being rather dedicated to taking the responsibility for your actions.  Normally, I would only count it on your final answer when I reveal whether or not someone got it right at the end of the day.  Note that I mainly have to do it this way because of my schedule.  You guys are all lucky that I gave out this question on my off day for work.  Anyways, if that's what you really want, then I'll deduct 5 points, okay?  All right!

So, in that sense, Clawandfang, Stitch and Mornai all get 50 points, but lbt/cty_lover gets 45 for getting it wrong first then getting it right.

Okay, so here's how it works:

For the first nine minutes the Ferris Wheel is moving, the cars arriving at the unloading zone are unoccupied.  For the last nine minutes of operation, needless to say, no one will be allowed to board the cars.

From the time the Ferris Wheel fills up at 10 minutes past the hour until the last passenger steps off at 10:30, a total of 21 sets of passengers will have taken a ride on the Ferris Wheel.  Since each car can hold 2 people and there are 21 sets total, that makes 21 times 2 or 42.

It is easy to forget the first pair of passengers getting on right at the start, which is why so many end up guessing 40.  Such a shame when a puzzle tricks you, huh?

---------

So, the score thus far:

Stitch: 210 points (12 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 180 points (14 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 540 points (16 Hint Points)

Alright, for 30 points:

A man has been perscribed 10 pills.  Starting today, he must take one pill a day, but because the concentration of the medicine is different in each pill, he must take them in a specific order.  Since the pills all look the same, the man has decided to write numbers on each pill to help him remember the order he needs to take them in.

How many pills does he have to number if he wants to keep track of the order?

Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 19, 2008, 01:45:17 AM
Stitch was the only one to get this right.  The correct answer is 8 pills.

You may debate on me with this one if you please, but the truth of the matter is that 8 is the correct answer.

The man takes his first pill today, so he only needs to number the remaining nine.  However, only 8 of those need to be numbered as the final one will be known easily after having labeled the first eight, thus the last pill doesn't need to be labeled either.

So, the score thus far:

Stitch: 240 points (12 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 180 points (14 Hint Points)

Okay, for 80 points:

Just a quick question, How many point categories are left?
If you look on the first page, you'll see a list of "point based" categories.  Whatever's not in red text are the ones that still have questions in them.

-----------

Now, as for this puzzle, lbt/cty_lover, Clawandfang, Mornai and Stitch got it right.  The number the boy was going to whisper was 17.

I'm sure a number of you solved this one by logic rather than figuring out the trick to this puzzle.  I'm sure a number of you would figure that it goes 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.  However, you never knew the trick, right? ;)

In this puzzle, the boy is counting the dots that are showing after he rolls it.  Every time he rolls a 1, the number not showing is 6, thus 1 to 5 are added up, which equals 15.  When he rolls a 6, the number 1 isn't showing, so 2 to 6 are added, which is 20.  In the case of 3, the number 4 isn't showing, so 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 are added up, which is 17.

The tricks into figuring this out is using two simple facts.  One, the numbers on a normal die add up to 21.  The opposite sides of the die will always add up to 7.  These two facts is all it takes to solve this puzzle.

-----------

So, the score thus far:

Stitch: 320 points (12 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 260 points (14 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 620 points (15 Hint Points)

Okay, for 40 points:

A detective who was mere days from cracking an international smuggling ring has suddenly gone missing.  While inspecting his last-known location, you find a note.

The note:

710
57735 34
5509
51 7719

The note appears to be nothing more than a series of numbers, but your gut instinct tells you that this note will reveal the name of the crime kingpin.

Currently, there are three suspects in the case: Bill, John and Todd.  Can you break the detective's code and find the criminal's name?

Mornai and lbt/cty_lover got it right.  Bill is the one behind it all.

The message is upside down.  In this fashion, when the numbers are turned upside down, they form letters, thus forming the following message:

bILL IS
bOSS
hE SELLS
OIL

Some of you might've learned this trick in school or having fun with a calculator and noticed the numbers looking like letters at some points.  Either way, doing it in this fashion proves to be a rather simple way to hide a message.

Clawandfang, Stitch, lbt/cty_lover and Mornai all got it right.  The girl's birthday is Janurary 2nd.

The conversation with the girl must've taken place December 31st.

Stitch, Clawandfang, Mornai and lbt/cty_lover got it right.  The correct answer is that C ate the sausages.  The only one telling the truth was D.

If you assume A to be the culprit, both C's and D's statements must be correct.  Choose B, and the other three boys' statements must be true.  If you make D out to be the criminal, then what both B and C are saying must be true.

Only C being the suspect makes it possible for only one, D in this case, to being truthful.  Now to decide C's punishment. :)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai, lbt/cty_lover and Stitch got it right.  The correct answer is one.

With this puzzle, the numbers are actually dates on a calander with the "/" and "," removed.  If we add them, it looks like this:

12/31, 1/1, 1/2, 1/3

With those symbols removed and making them scrunched together, it makes it alot harder to solve.

Okay, for 70 points:

In front of you is a rather unusual lock:

? X ?
? ? ?
? X ?

On this particular lock, you need to place the numbers 1 through 9 into the ? slots and so that all the rows and columns, when multiplied together, have the same value.

Note that you can only use each number once and that there are only 7 slots, so you can't use two of the numbers.  On top of that, the rows and columns with the X don't count, so only those with the ? on all three slots do.

Good luck! :)

Title: Ultimate Puzzle Challenge!
Post by: pokeplayer984 on April 26, 2008, 01:30:26 AM
Wow!  lbt/cty_lover was the only one to get this right.

The secret to this puzzle is figuring out the number that works with them, which is 72.

As you can plainly see:

3 X 4 X 6 = 72
4 x 9 x 2 = 72
8 x 9 x 1 = 72

Another trick is figuring out what doesn't work.  5 and 7, out of the numbers provided, are the only numbers that can't go into 72.

From there, it just comes down to how it all goes together.
-------------

So, the score thus far:

Stitch: 490 points (12 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 465 points (14 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 720 points (13 Hint Points)

LBTFan13: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mumbling: 220 points (14 Hint Points)

action9000: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

--------------------|149
147 142 141 140|

That makes 1142 in total. I suspect you meant that all the totals had to be equal, in which case I don't stand a chance. I can't do these.

I'm not sure I entirely understood this. Is this the sort of thing you'r after:

       50   46   49 | 145
       45   51   43 | 139
       47   44   48 | 139
--------------------|149
147 142 141 140|

That makes 1142 in total. I suspect you meant that all the totals had to be equal, in which case I don't stand a chance. I can't do these.
I did actually mean what you said at the end there.  I apologize for the mix-up and shall not charge you as such. :)

Is it this hard?  You guys do know that I accept hints, right? :)

Okay then, hint me.

Same here. I can't solve this using a system of equations.

I think I have a solution. This is after the first hint was read, but before the second arrived.

EDIT: This one is after the second question's arrival. I now don't have an answer.

I must apologize. :(

I had gone and misread the question completely and as such, I had written it out wrong all this time.

For this, I greatly apologize and no one shall be pentalized at all.

---------

Seeing as how it's coming down to the end of the month, which was said to be when this game will end, I shall post the final question tomorrow.

However, be warned, it's the hardest of all! :)

I can't wait for it! How many points will it be worth?

Okay, time for the final question.

Before I put it up, let me explain the few changes in the rules:

1. There will be NO hints provided, for this one, you're on your own.

2.  You, the player, will give me a wager by PM.  You don't wager, you're not allowed to answer.  Breaking this rule will result in losing ALL the points you worked so hard to get.

3.  If you don't guess and end up being the one with the most points, you WON'T earn the title of "Ultimate Puzzle Solver".  Understand, I'm not going to just give the title away.  I want you to prove yourself worthy of the title.  Only those that answer it will be found worthy of having the chance to earn the title.

Okay, those are the changes in the rules.

Now, before I begin, here are the scores one last time:

Stitch: 490 points (12 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 465 points (14 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 720 points (13 Hint Points)

LBTFan13: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Tails_155: 80 points (12 Hint Points)

lbt/cty_lover: 750 points (12 Hint Points)

Mumbling: 220 points (14 Hint Points)

action9000: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

mcr mad: 0 points (10 Hint Points)
-----------------------

Okay, here we go!  The final question, which is the HARDEST out of them all.

On the following chessboard:

A1 A2 A3 A4 A5
B1 B2 B3 B4 B5
c1 C2 c3 C4 C5
d1 d2 d3 d4 d5
E1 E2 E3 E4 E5

Place 3 Queens and so that they don't block one another's moves.  Sound easy?  Here's the twist... You have to place the Queens and so that their moves take up EVERY square.

Remember that for this puzzle, you need to put in the letter-number combo that you placed a Queen on.

------------

The answer for this puzzle will be given by the end of tomorrow.

Best of luck to all. :^.^:

A1, B4, D3.

This was great. It was a perfect way for me to relieve the tension of my upcoming AP exams. I thank you once again, pokeplayer984.

I am going to attach an e-hug to this message.

That was a good challenge.

Mumbling, Clawandfang and lbt/cty_lover gave correct solutions.  However, Stitch got it wrong as A2 and C4 are along the same diagonal, thus meaning that they block one another's moves.  Not to mention that you didn't fill up all the squares, Stitch.  You missed D1.

So, that means the winner of the Ultimate Puzzle Challenge, and earning the title of Ultimate Puzzle Solver is...

lbt/cty_lover with a total of 1500 points (12 Hint Points)!

Congradulations to our winner! :^.^:

------------

Final score:

Stitch: 489 points (12 Hint Points)

Flathead770: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Mornai: 465 points (14 Hint Points)

Clawandfang: 1440 points (13 Hint Points)

LBTFan13: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

Tails_155: 80 points (12 Hint Points)

lbt/cty_lover: 1500 points (12 Hint Points)

Mumbling: 440 points (14 Hint Points)

action9000: 0 points (10 Hint Points)

mcr mad: 0 points (10 Hint Points)
--------------------------------

Even though this Ultimate Puzzle Challenge has come to an end, it will return with harder puzzles than before.

If you would like more challenging puzzles, be sure to pick up Professor Layton and the Curious Village on the Nintendo DS.  In truth, this is where I got ALL the puzzles. :)

However, make sure to return when this game makes it's return and continue it's mission to find a puzzle that will stump the human race.

----------

So, how did you guys like this game?  If you must know, I found the puzzles enjoyable myself. :yes

This was the funnest game i've ever played on a Forum/Message Board and i enjoyed it,  but sadly i forgot to post an answer for the last puzzle. :bang

And also, i think it's a bit ironic/weird that lbt/cty_lover won the The Ultimate Puzzle Challenge, but he had to leave for a while just a short amount of time before he won. :(

Good Job LBT/CTY_Lover ^^. Congratulations.

I loved this game even when I didn't join in that many times after a while. I'd like playing something which is alike once again.

I found this great. Only problem was that a few puzzles popped up of the type I can't do...ARGH!! I'm joking of course... I don't think they shouldn't have been in or anything. In any case it was good fun, thanks pokeplayer. Well done lbt/cty_lover.

I thank all people who congratulate me. I just got a break from my parents. I have to work, but as long as I keep this web-page hidden, they won't know anything.  :^.^:
