Besides that school, my family and I spent about seven years knee-deep in fostering kittens and cats (can't for now! Just a few more years lol) and my family's spread to the four winds kinda. Parents sold the childhood home in 2020 (where we were born and raised) and so I crashed with my mom's for a year, while I started my BFA, then my parents for the summer of 2021, and now I'm finally on my own!
If anyone's interested, I can share the start of the professional portfolio!
I'm really leaning into the idea of working on a graphic design team for a company or non profit

Hi all! This is Ptyra!
It's been several years since I've been around (mostly sense the big InvisionFree switch...) and was starting to feel nostalgic for old forum days!
The last time I peeked in, I was starting to attend a tech school for an AAS in Visual Communications in Design, which I got in 2017. Now I'm finally getting my Bachelor of Fine Arts (Graphic Design) and am Even More Finally living on my own! I'm probably graduating by this time next year, but we'll see how my class schedule goes....
Not entirely sure how active I'll be, especially since I'm knee-deep in OK KO and even helping to set up a forum for that. Which is probably part of why I got wistful feelings about the Good Old Times. Especially with this place still thriving!
Anyway, glad to see those of you who are still here!

1988 Theatrical Release / The original movie is on Netflix now!

I come out of my long-time hiatus due to school and having a new computer, to say that the original movie is on Netflix now! At least for those of you living in the US, I don't know what other countries are doing.

Let me start with this
I don't know how I managed to be both charmed and horrendously annoyed by Wild Arms, but it happened. He might share some colors with Pterano in terms of self-preservation, but even he'd call him out on leaving children in danger for it.
The moment he showed up, I immediately thought "Oh noooooo."
What even is he anyway?
Etta was a little different than I expected, but I'll still shriek, "All aboard" for shipping her with Pterano. Ship name Pteretta?
"I had a sister who would do anything for her friends. Once she stuck her head in a Sharptooth's mouth for one. Of course, she's not around anymore..."
Now THAT was morbid for a very, very late LBT sequel

She was sweet as I hoped, though in a different way than I expected. I was expecting a southern country mom type character (she IS voiced by Reba after all), but I didn't expect the family stories and forgetfulness.
She could have easily been replaced with Pterano in this setting though, since part of the story was about reuniting with family. Maybe played by Maurice LaMarche considering Michael York's health these days. If they wanted a flier in the Mysterious Beyond, why not use him?

I just did a little investigation into how he's doing, and he has done a little bit recently. Just as a narrator for a televised version of Sleeping Beauty last year. In 2017 he will be in Quantum Investigations: The Quantum Heist...whatever that is. Pretty much no information on it.
Most of all, he was misdiagnosed with Multiple Mylenoma. He HAD amyloidosis: "a condition that involves the abnormal production of insoluble proteins, which clump together in different parts of the body.
The disease can have fatal consequences – if it affects vital organs it can cause them to shut down – but York, who first noticed symptoms in the form of purple rings under his eyes in 2009, has successfully battled it." (source)
He even narrated an eduational video on it
No, I'm not imagining an elderly Pterano educating the GoF about this. No I'm not snickering at it either. Really.
I will for sure be getting his book; after all, I have the autobiography he wrote in the 90's. It should be a nice refresher.

Yep. We haven't been able to do any fostering since our Christmas kittens, since we've been doing major housework. This seemed like a good opportunity, plus we have the mother, and the kittens are already pretty big as it is. Mama, not so much. The bigger kitten is half her length and nearly as tall as she is. They just need some medicine and socializing. The kittens anyway. Once they're able to be in my room, they should pick up right away.
For now they're in my parents' bathroom while they're at their sickest.

I had a pretty good birthday.
I got a pedicure and had lunch with my youngest brother's girlfriend, then we picked up our newest foster cats from an animal control center -- a mama and two eight week old kittens. They're in need of serious medical attention, but hopefully the little ones should be socialized really well by the time they're fully recovered.
Especially if their gigantic sweetie of a tiny mom pushes them in the right direction.

Considering the potential that bird necks lie, it could be in the realm of possibility that they could have had a syrinx. Especially comparing them to parakeets, though they're probably much farther apart from each other; corvids and pheasants seem closer to true raptors. But then again, corvids like ravens and crows have mimicked speech. Though with less refinement than parrots.
Alex the Parrot's last words to his trainer is still something that tugs at the heartstrings...and honestly makes me wonder what Koko the Gorilla's last words will be. Though that seems far down the line.
I made a post looking for advice on yet another Dalek-based story I'm working on, one certainly touchier than my others. A lot of ideas [have changed since then, which I can communicate to you if you are able. Basically it's like putting The Grapes of Wrath in a blender with the Prometheus And Zeus Feud, but replacing the humans/mortals with Thals, and the Olympians and Titans replaced by Daleks. Then making Rose of Sharon the main character. Technically speaking, the story even begins where The Grapes of Wrath ends. If you know what I mean. And that's about as much as I can describe without going too much into detail.

James Gurney's paintings make me believe that a world with humans and dinosaurs co-existing exists (not really, but I mean it sets the imagination on fire.)
Some dinosaur documentaries are interesting to watch as well (if you can get past the cheesy animation.) Not long ago, I watched "Dinotasia" on Netflix which was actually a lot better than I thought it would be (again, you kinda have to ignore the lack of superb animation.) It's definitely not your average dino documentary. It's hardly a documentary, actually, because the narrator (Werner Herzog) speaks so seldom. It's more like you're watching different groups and individual dinosaurs live their life and face trials. I think any dinosaur fan would really appreciate Dinotasia!
Often when I read the dinotopia books, when they mention a dinosaur I'd never heard of, or don't remember what kind it is, I'll pause my reading and look said dinosaur up online. I like randomly reading about the different types that used to exist.
.What I like about Dinotopia these days, especially the original, is that the dated-ness of it hurts so much more than any other dinosaur stuff from the 2000's and before. And yet it's still great. Gurney's depiction of Deinocheus, for example, just looked like really, really big ornithomimus-type dinosaurs. I wonder if he's done a depiction of what we know now.
Last year a fourth Dinotopia book was released, making account of the events that led to the sinking of Posidos. I haven't read it yet, but I intend to.

This would be a good time to work on my latest revisions to the Ptyra story though, since I realized a lot in the story that doesn't fit Pterano's personality.
Basically, the update is "Pterano is better at being an uncle than a father."
The latest version of the story is:
Pterano and Ada were still a couple when they were young, and raised Ptyra (and her siblings) together. He wasn't a deadbeat father, but he wasn't great. He was more interested in entertaining his children than being a disciplinarian. Under his watch, they were allowed to do their own thing, which often got him in trouble with Ada and her father. Though he claimed not to have favorites, Ptyra got a little extra attention from him, probably because she looked the most like him. The whole family was separated when the Great Earthshake happened, when the children were adolescents. Ptyra and Pterano were both completely separated from Ada and the other children, who remained together until they found safety on their own. While Pterano joined the combined herds, Ptyra continued to be alone until, like Littlefood, she gathered up her own tiny ragtag herd of misfits, and together, they stumbled around the wilderness until finally reaching the Great Valley.
She continues to be different from Pterano in personality, perhaps even in opposition. Where Pterano is closed minded and charismatic, Ptyra is opened minded and...not so charismatic. She's bitter, blunt, and even a little sarcastic.
