hi people i saw there was a german history quiz, and i gonna do something to! but there are 2 big differences, 1. it is not about history, its about dutch, 2. and i'm the guy who ask the questions! :lol
rules:
1. every day i post a comment with a dutch word, you guys need to describe what it means
2. after one day i'll say what it means,
just post your question if you don't understand,
all right here's the very first word:
handtas
ok, what means this dutch word?
good luck!
-
dumbbell or handbag?
Random (and probably wrong) guesses based on phonetic similarity to other words.
-
I have no idea what the word means.
-
I won't tell because it's kjeldo's game... But I think it's too hard kjeld ;) Dutch words are not like english ones and thats why this game might bore people very fast.
-
i think you got a point at that mumbling...
-
by the way handbag was a correct answer.
-
Cheers! :D
Now I take my turn and come up with a German word which should be possible to guess for both, our English and our Dutch (and probably other language members as well). What do you make of this German word:
Stra?e
-
Strange? Strobe?
Are we doing all words here? I think it would be better if we just stuck to nouns personally.

I definitely agree with you on that one. The word I picked is a noun (nouns are always capitalized in German). The word is one you walk across every day.
-
Road?
-
That's right :yes
For the more similar word in English one would refer to the word "street" I suppose and in Dutch I think it is "straat".
-
So, is it my turn now? Well, the only language I speak is English, but I do know some Latin, so here's a Latin noun:
servus
This should be fairly easy I think. It's got a clear English derivative, but I don't know about other European languages.
-
server, serving, to serve
That's my guess.
-
I had Latin at school, therefore I won't participate in this one. It is a very good idea though for our English speakers to come up with Latin or another language (I think we could well include Spanish into this game too). The only thing we should keep in mind is to pick words which have at least a remote phonetic or other similarity to English so it allows everyone to participate :yes
-
You're very close Petrie, just bear in mind we're only doing nouns, and what Roman culture was like, and you're bound to get it.
-
"bound to get it", that sounds almost like a hidden hint for the word. One of the words you named is somewhat related with the word looked for here Petrie.
-
Well, it wasn't meant to be a hint, although now you mention it, it does look quite good...
-
slave probably.. :p
Malte, straat is indeed the dutch word. :)
-
Slave definately. From which we get the English word "Servant", which is basically a paid slave. Don't know about other Latin-based languages, but I'm guessing they all have something similar.
I suppose we're getting a Dutch word next then.
-
I've just read the first post to this topic properly (before I just skim-read) and it looks as if we've hijacked this topic from its indended purpose.
Oops.
-
^ That was my work in particular. I am not sure how long this game would survive if we limit it to Dutch only, but if we expand it to the other languages GOF members speak (some similarity to some English word provided) I think this game might be more lasting. I might change the title to "Language Quiz" only.
Your turn Iris :)
-
It's a good idea to change it to language quiz. Hmm a dutch word. 'tijd' .. Good luck
-
Tide?
-
Tide?
Nope, close though.
-
yes, i know the word and
no, i don't gonna say it,
-
would it be ocean?
-
no its not the ocean ^^
-
Is it Dutch for time?
-
^ Good guess, I wonder if it is correct. The German word for time would be "Zeit" which would sound similar to tijd and Dutch and German often sound similar. I don't know it for certain of course.

BUMP to Mumbling. :bang
