Basically, I ask 'who am I?' and I list one thing that this person did as a clue. Every fives guesses I will add another clue, until someone gets it. I'll start you off with an easy one just to get you into the feel of things. Most of the answers will be found in literature.

Who am I? Someone else's wife ran off with me and a war broke out because of it. Who am I?

Very interesting idea! I love this game!  :)
Are you Paris? The prince of Troy who abducted Helena, the wife of king Menelaos of Sparta? The trojan war was the result of this.

Correct.

Don't you just love "The Iliad"?

#2:

Who am I? I was called to help a village that was being tormented by a man-like monster from a swamp. Who am I?

I love all ancient sagas and myths! Knowing me, you can perhaps imagine that I didn't like the way the recent movie "Troy" varied from the original story.  ;)

Your last riddle could refer to Beowulf, one of the very few Anglo-Saxon epics which survived till today. Beowulf was a hero (I think from Sweden) who was asked by the King of Denmark to support him against the monster Grendel. Not only did Beowulf slay Grendel, but also his equally terrible mother.
In case this is right, just let me know, and I can come up with a riddle like this too.

"Equally terrible mother"? "More terrible" is more like it! She scared me more than Grendel ever did. Yes, its "Beowulf". I have my suspicions as to what she had planned for his arm. Perhaps to revive him?

Who am I? I killed my father and took my share of his money, as well as my brother's share of it, then turned myself into a dragon. Who am I?

This one beats me.
But when I solve a riddle, I can come up with one too. I just don't want to without being sure that the last guess was right, which is why I always ask about it.

Clue #2: My brother hired a man to kill me. They dug a hole, so when I crossed over, he stabbed in my soft underbelly. This is where Tolkien got the idea of Sam stabbing Shelob's underside.

I'm sure if I knew this saga I would have guessed it by now with all these hinds. Alas I'm afraid I don't know this one.

To which part of literature or mythology does the character you describe belong? I'm really sure I haven't read it yet.

Siggard the Dragon Slayer.

I can't seem to find my book of myths, and I can't remember the dragon's name, myself, so let's just move on. I'll tell you later, once I've found it, if you haven't found the answer, by yourself.

Who am I? Once a king, now only a corrupted shadow. Who am I?

I'd think of the Nazghuls from the lord of the rings, all of whom were kings before they were corrupted by the rings. The only one about whom I know a previous identity is the wizzard king of Angmar who became the lord of the Nazgul and was slain by Eowyn in the battle on the Pallenor Fields.

In case this guess is right, please just tell me, and I will come up with the next description for you to guess.

Correct.

Who am I? Because of my pride, I could not cross the sea to go home for many years. Who am I?

You are Odysseus or Ulysses as he is called in America!
However, I've guessed three of your characters already, but never got a chance to come up with one of myself. So for now I will run the risk to pressupose the last answer is correct, without confirmation and will come of with a character description myself.

Even after I was dead did my body defend my besieged town.

He's called Odysseus by a loy of people, here in America, as well. Who called him Ulysses? I've only ever known him as Odysseus.

Anyway, the answer is correct.

Hmm. I don't remember that...yet.

At least Ulysses was the title of a book about him which I came across in America.

Some more hints on the person we are looking for now:
He is the hero of a Spanish saga, and did really live (but of course the saga changed and magnified many things).

Oh boy. Can somebody else reply, too, I'm not very familiar with Spanish folklore.

I'm quite sure that most of you will at least know the name of this character, though the saga may be unknown to some of you. He became the king of Valencia, and that's the town his body defended even after he was dead.

(Another hind to those of you who may have the computer game Age of Empires II - The conquerors (expansion set). One of the campaigns in this game is about the character I'm talking about).
I promise to chose an easier one next time.

Sorry. I'm afraid I made it too difficult. So I solve the last riddle and come up with an easier one.

The answer was El Cid, also known as El Cid Campeador or (hardly known) under his real name Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar. After he died (according to some he was mortally wounded in battle while others say he was just old) the news about his dead were kept secret and his body was tight onto the saddle of his horse.
Upon the news that El Cid was still alive his men (who defended his town Valencia against Moorish invaders) plucked up courage, while his enemies were frightened enough to abandon the siege of the town.

Okay, here is the next one:

Crossing a river with my men upset the Republic. I was killed by those whom I trusted. Whom I considered my sun dealt me (as a famous English dramatist later wrote) the unkindest cut of all.

I would have to guess Julius Ceasar.  There was a show on the Discovery Channel that talked about Ceasar's murder, and scientists say that Marcus Brutus could be Ceasar's illegitimate (hate spelling   ) son.

Julius Caesar is right! His crossing of the river Rubikon triggered the Roman civil war, which resulted in the "unofficial" end of the Roman republic. Brutus (though I don't know about any physical relationship) was like an adopted son to Caesar, which is why Marc Anthony in Shakespeare's drama "Julius Caesar" calls his stab at Caesar the unkindest cut of all.

Your turn Kenji  :)
