Title: Series on DVD
Post by: NewOrder on April 10, 2009, 05:47:36 PM
So far there have been released 6 DVD's, each one with 4 episodes from the TV Series. In the US LBT XIII had one episode as a bonus, and there's another episode left out of the DVD release.

Does anyone have any news about a release of a DVD Box Set with the entire series? It would be a lot cheaper and more organized, than this way.

Sorry I don't.  Times I search but I don't see nothing new so far.

They may be saving it for a dvd release in the future.

I forgot which is the only episode that hasn't appeared in the LBT DVDs
was it the Big Longneck Test???

It was the Big Longneck test, yes.

Strangely enough, the episode is featured in the 6th Swedish version DVD.

All LBT DVDs come in different languages right?
Title: Series on DVD
Post by: Lillefot on April 19, 2009, 02:42:26 AM
Well I guess. In Sweden, every DVD features:

Swedish
Norweigan
Danish
Sometimes Finnish

It's quite odd, as all of the DVD's for the Land before Time and it's sequels, had English as a language option.

Seriously, they must be having a reason to holding back that last episode over in the states?

I would love to watch LBT it in a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language.

Bumping thread up to talk about these DVDs.

I know that nowadays, it’s easy to watch the series on YouTube because all episodes of the TV series are on YouTube, but I feel like it’s more magical watching it on DVD rather than on a website, even when 2 episodes are missing.

That being said, what infuriates me is the fact that the DVD cover has two phrases that bother me.  The “as seen on Cartoon Network” phrase, and the “Hit TV series” phrase (latter is wrong because I doubt the show got lots of viewers considering the show aired during a time in which kids would be at school).

I have five DVDs out of six.

Three with four episodes, two with five episodes.

I'm missing one DVD case, with four episodes.

That being said, I now have:

3 times 4 + 2 times 5 = 12 + 10 = 22 episodes

So I will have the entire series on DVD eventually.

I wish you luck, currently I have 3 out of 6 DVDs right now, which means I have 12 episodes on DVD.

I need 3 more DVDs (12 more episodes) to finish my DVD set (1 more DVD (1 episode) if you count the bonus episode that was in TLBT XIII, but to me that’s optional since I already own that movie in a 2 in 1 movie DVD, so it doesn’t make sense to own TLBT XIII again since I rather stay away from those Yellow Bellies).

Great news, guys! Looks like the complete tv series is finally coming to DVD!
Only issue is that it looks like episodes are still fullscreen when widescreen episodes are already available online.

To make you more excited, it’s also going to be the first time The Big Longneck Test gets released on DVD, as past DVD releases don’t have it.  I know it’s already on YouTube, but it’s still pretty exciting (@pokeplayer984 will probably be excited about this).

I can't believe they are still cropping the series, there is no point in a release if it isn't uncut.

The complete series has been available in English on DVD in Germany for a long time now, the only problem is episode 9, which uses German subtitles.

LMAO I can't get over how tiny he is here compared to Littlefoot. And the fact the art style is different compared to the other characters is so jarring yikes

Interesting that they're releasing a new DVD now of all times. Makes one wonder...  :thinking

I truly do wonder if LBT as a larger franchise is Universal's budget DVD market cash cow of sorts. Not quite worth it to make new entries or, in my wildest dreams, blu-ray relases, but absolutely worth it to continue producing affordable DVDs of content that's already made. The DVD market is shockingly strong, bigger than blu-rays and 4k blu-rays combined, which is amazing considering that it's a medium that should rightfully be dead and buried. It strikes me that LBT may be a means of taking advantage of that. Low-income families looking for wholesome, but high value (ie, many hours of content for less money) entertainment maybe? I'm speculating here for the large part, but it is fascinating that any new LBT physical media is being released.

LBT has relatively little streaming presence, but almost every major Amazon sale I see has a complete box set of the movies on sale, and now we see this series release. It's an interesting niche that we don't see often in the age of Netflix and Youtube kids content.

I believe this is going to be exclusive to the US, unless UK gets one as well (UK already has one, but it’s missing 2 episodes somehow).

Well, the DVD is listed on Amazon now, so I guess that gives me the okay to pre-order the DVD now.  Here’s the link if you don’t believe me:

https://www.amazon.com/Land-Before-Time-Complete-DVD/dp/B09XXY9WBY/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?crid=2BAFZV10ZF0OM&keywords=complete+tv+series&qid=1650238083&refinements=p_n_date%3A2693529011&rnid=2693522011&s=movies-tv&sprefix=complete+tv+%2Caps%2C206&sr=1-9

Also, can someone edit the Wikipedia page of the TV series with different wording?  The wording on that page right now about this DVD looks like a child edited it:

Sorry I'm late to the party.  Anyways, this is great to see!  At long last, my collection can OFFICALLY be complete. :ChomperImAwesome

I might have to wait on this one.  I plan to have a little something big going on in May that might not be done until June.  Won't say what that is at the moment, but everyone will know soon enough.

I’m not sure, but I really hope they’re just placeholders, because if they’re not, then the DVD will end up being misleading (screenshot-wise).

Glad it was a typo.  I, at first got confused as to why cropped prints are being used on the DVD rather than the widescreen versions that were on YouTube, so now that they’re using widescreen prints, maybe this DVD will be more worth it now.

Still disappointed over the fact that screenshots that are not from the TV series are still being used on the DVD.  If that doesn’t change by June 7, then I will be extremely confused as to why this is on the final DVD cover.

Impressions are pretty good so far. Mine has the 1:33:1 aspect ratio error on the back but that could be because I pre-ordered it before it was fixed. Also the film screenshots are still there. It's similar to the Complete Film Collection DVD in that the case is made of a clear plastic.

That’s interesting.  Besides that, how are the other stuff on the DVD?  Does the DVD have any bonus features besides the episodes, what do the DVD menus look like, and how are the episodes on DVD compared to the prints on YouTube and the former prints on Sprout/Universal Kids?

There are no bonus features sadly. Here's what the Disc 1 menu looks like. If I had to guess all of the DVD menu's look like this.

In regards to the print it looks pretty good. It's basically the HD versions on YouTube downscaled to DVD quality.

Why would Universal re-release a DVD of episodes despite knowing that people can watch them all for free on Youtube. Isn't that a risky business strategy to make something easily available for free and then ask people to buy the already existing episodes on Youtube for money?

It's also a de-mastered DVD.

I own 101 Dalmatians 1961 on regular DVD but that's been upgraded with surround sound and cleaned up to look brand new. Universal should've done something like that to make it stand out from the Youtube video instead of going the opposite way. Also audio commentaries would've given the DVDs way more selling potential.

Glad the quality looks good, disappointed that there’s no bonus features since the previous TV series releases had bonus features, so missed opportunity.

Anyway one last question, and it might be stupid but, is there any background music playing on the DVD menu so the menu doesn’t look THAT depressing considering it already looks bare bones?

I haven't checked. Not in the mood for earworms right now. The menu's running time is 1 minute and 30 seconds so maybe.

The only major reason I can think off the top of my head is that there would be no YouTube ads.
Also, we're lucky that we even got a DVD release in the first place.

Also, have any of you guys bought the full 14 film box set? Is it worth it?

Well folks, I finally got the complete series on DVD.  I will say it’s pretty much your standard vanilla release, and it can be noted by the bland DVD menu with has the instrumental theme playing in the background.  The DVD is basically just the series, and no special features unlike the previous TV Series releases.

For some weird reason, the DVD states that the aspect ratio of the episodes is 4:3, but upon playing the DVD, they’re all 16:9, so that’s a little false advertising (to be fair, there’s much worse false advertising on the back of the cover).

Overall the release is fine you ask me, but I kinda only recommend you get it if you want to complete your TLBT physical media collection, otherwise just watch the episodes on YouTube.
