General Land Before Time / Speciesism
« on: January 09, 2013, 12:52:21 PM »
I admit that the Nazi analogy was a hyperbole. Old One's herd, I know, are not that bad. But I just wanted to express the point that Topsy isn't the only racist character, and discrimination towards other species is far more widespread than that. Just how severe it gets, still, I suppose remains to be seen.
Malte, I'm glad you mentioned the oasis scene. I remember reading about it, and if my memory serves me correctly, that included a group of bigmouths who would only let Ducky drink with them because she was the same species. Don Bluth's intention was, after all, to draw a parallel between the days of US segregation.

Even though Old One doesn't seem particularly racist herself, I can't help but think more extreme views may be held by individual members of her herd. After all, one was set to kill Chomper even though he was both young and spoke. Though natrually, he was provoked by Chomper's apparent attack on Rhett.

And Malte, I'm now intrigued...tell me more about this story?

True that. But I think in serious circumstances, such as when Cera went missing later on in that film, he's willing to bury the hatchet he has with other species.

I'm still working on the idea, but I think it could make for a great pair of villains. what do you think?
:smile Yeah, sounds good! I look forward to seeing the fanfic when it's written...
I'm busy developing ideas of sorts myself, in terms of OCs, OC villlains and stuff...haven't written anything yet, but stay tuned!

Well, it definitley seems to be a phenomenon that denies in-universe exlanation...
Though there's nothing wrong with talking antagonists; random sharpteeth popping up all over the place is starting to seriously get old...
What type of animal do you guys think would create an ideal antagonist?
I wouldn't know for a fact, it could even be a leaf-eater; perhaps some creature that feels the longnecks or residents of great valley are to blame for its herd, self, or family (hey, a new morale idea for LBT XD)?
:smile Why not? Having a leaf-eater antagonist would certainly turn the tables a bit...even the good sharpteeth have to fight other sharpteeth. Let's have something a little different...
Though I still like my idea of an evil rainbow face...

General Land Before Time / Speciesism
« on: January 08, 2013, 01:53:59 PM »
OK, because I'm new, again, I don't know if this has been approached before.
Either way! Here goes...

Speciesism is the racism of the LBT world. And, it has been a subconsious theme running through most of the movies, if not all of them, most prominentley on the first.

Racism in the LBT world is now almost synonymous with the character of Topsy, which is pretty unfair. Certainly, he's a racist character, but he has become more tolerant with time. And considering Topsy's given a whole heck of hate, all the other speciesist/racist characters in the series are largely overlooked. I don't think that's fair.

Take Old One's herd for example: On the fourth film, they point-blank ignore every other species of dinosaur that has come to greet them except for their own, and make it very clear that only longnecks should be allowed to accompany them when they leave. It may not sound too bad, but if you think about it, if the Great Valley were to change as dramatically as the Land of Mists had, what would Old One have done with all the species of dinosaurs living their that weren't longnecks? I wouldn't put it past her to simply leave them to die. And being a segregated herd is not merely a by-product of being far-walkers, considering the mixed herd that arrived at the Great Valley at the beginning of the seventh film.

This goes completley without mentioning Ali's reaction. Unlike Cera's previous attitude to other species, it wasn't an aloof, snooty sort of thing, but it was actually genuine fear. Fear of what exactly? Fear of other species because of what she's been told about them? Fear of what her elders might do to her if they had learned she had been interacting with other species? Either one is possible, and if so, it is an almost Nazi-like stance.

Sure, Topsy's beliefs rubbed off on Cera, there's no doubt about that. But as far as we can infer, Topsy didn't force these beliefs on her, otherwise Cera would have been an extremely meek and mild character, very different from the head-strong threehorn we all know and some of us love. I'm sure that Cera adopted these beliefs because her father did, not because he brainwashed her.

So, anyway, give me your thoughts, not just on what I've said about Old One's herd, but about speciesism in general.

Character Discussion / Petrie's blind defense of Pterano
« on: January 07, 2013, 05:21:09 PM »
To be fair, Petrie is pretty naive. Not bashing him at all, he's great, but it is the truth! And eventually he did learn that Pterano wasn't quite as good as he thought he was, and besides, Pterano is an extremely manipulative and charismatic character. He was able to convince a small portion of the combined herds to follow his lead after all.

Sure!
The rainbow faces: Now, I'm sure many of you were irritated by their alien exodus, myself included. But they are actually some of my favourite characters. Due to the way they were speaking, they could have easily been terrestrial creatures, but were a hyperintelligent higher species dreaming on space exploration. The way they talked about 'Beyond the Mysterious Beyond' seemed more to me that they were dreaming of living there rather than they actually did.
In my mind, they are, in a sense, hyperintelligent dinosauroids as supposed to aliens.
Of course, their extreme intelligence and resourcefulness can be useful, but what if there was an EVIL rainbow face with sinister intentions? Something to think about...

General Land Before Time / Ichy and Dil's language
« on: January 07, 2013, 11:47:36 AM »
Subtitles don't just cut it though. It's a shame we never saw the sharpteeth language being directly translated on-screen, with the flattooth language reduced to a series of grunts and bellows.
The tables will have turned... :lol  :lol

Character Discussion / Kosh and Mr. Clubtail
« on: January 07, 2013, 10:49:01 AM »
A bit late to reply on this thing, but...
I think they may be the same character. I mean, even though Kosh in the TV series was being surly and belching juice over everyone, eventually he did relent and let them have some of the grapes. Though, he's definatley not the only clubtail in the series. At least two are seen at most times, and there was another one who fell victim to Deinonychus after following Pterano. Not to mention the female snow-hating clubtail on the eighth film.

General Land Before Time / Ichy and Dil's language
« on: January 07, 2013, 10:32:19 AM »
Perhaps. I mean, if they had picked up on that language and were using it frequently, it could have ended being something that's natrual to them, and something that was then used all the time.
Like, on the TV episode, The Lonely Journey, Chomper seems to have forgotten his native language himself... :bang
No wonder those sharpteeth didn't want to be friends with him, they couldn't understand a word he was saying!

General Land Before Time / Ichy and Dil's language

So, I'm new on here, and I don't know if this subject has been approached before. Sincerest apologies if it has, but anyway, here goes:

In the LBT universe, there are quite a few languages, the two most prominent of course being the flattooth language and the sharptooth language. As the leaf-eaters are the protagonistic creatures, their language is heard as English (or some other human language) to the viewer whereas the sharptooth language is generally growls and roars. Occasionally, we get subtitles for their language.

But, Ichy and Dil are honourary sharpteeth, yes? What puzzles me is how they are heard speaking English. Of course, like Chomper, they may have simply learnt the language, perhaps to understand their prey better and work out clever ways to hunt them by knowing what they're thinking. But then this begs the question why they comunicate to each other in flattooth tounge. Considering its the langauge of their prey, its not exactly the most dignified way of speaking. Ichy even referred to Littlefoot and the others as 'animals' when they were throwing rocks at them. Then again, if you're pinned with the most unlikely partner for survival, dignity isn't always your top priority.  :lol

The only other explanation I can think of is this: Ichy and Dil were speaking the sharptooth language, and in this case it was directly translated into English, as supposed to just using subtitles. But then again, Ichy was seen replying to what Littlefoot was saying about getting back home by, 'The only place you're going is the inside of our stomachs!'

Sooooooo...I dunno. Its over to you. What do you think?

General Land Before Time / Getting to know you - LBT Style
« on: January 07, 2013, 07:47:22 AM »
I'll have a go!

1) My favourite character is, and has been for a long time, Chomper. I loved him the moment he was introduced. The fact that he is a sharptooth is an interesting plot device which should have been tackled more often, and in the second film he was simply adorable!  :DD

2) My least favourite characters are the yellow bellies. Need I say anything more?  :bang

3) My favourite LBT song is probably the original If We Hold On Together, though I do also like the catchy villain numbers like Eggs, Who Needs You and Very Important Creature. I also like Beyond the Mysterious Beyond and the deeper songs like Bestest Friends and No One Has To Be Alone. All in all, quite a few of them... :smile

4) My least favourite is (probably) the coonstant reprising of Adventuring in the TV series. To start off with it was fine, but when they constantly sing it, with more off-key melodies each time, it starts to get old.

5) My favourite film is obviously the first one, but my other favourites include V, VII and X.

6) My least favourite is 13.

7) For me, one of the most memorable LBT moments is when Littlefoot's mother showed up on the first film to battle the Sharptooth, or possibly on the second film when they discover they have a sharptooth egg.

The Welcome Center / Hi, I'm new.

Hi guys, I'm new on this site. My name's Toby, I'm 15 and, seemingly like many people on here, I have Asperger's Syndrome.
What can I say, but I love LBT! Even though I'm from the UK and getting LBT material is hard to come by, I can still get my hands on some of it.  ;)
So, I'm looking forward to getting to know you all, and thanks to FlipperBoidSkua who introduced me to this site!  :wave
