Title: Owl be here for your Asks
Post by: OwlsCantRead on May 20, 2019, 12:04:32 PM
May 20th is my younger brother's birthday, and I see that this board in particular suddenly gained a crazy amount of life, so why not? Yolo, as the young'uns would say. :Mo
^ Famous last words, right here... :lol

Have a burning question that you're dying to ask me (within certain boundaries, of course)? Feel free to shoot 'em at me right here! I might not respond immediately, but owl be certain *slapped for that pun* to get back to your query as soon as I can. Have fun!

What songs give you a blast of childhood nostalgia whenever you hear them?
Funnily enough, lullaby music. I have this distinct memory of the most carefree part of my life being filled with serene, orchestral music serenading my ears.

But for a more standard answer, the Season 1 Pokémon theme. So catchy, so much nostalgia.

What are your hobbies, if any?
Reading! I love reading! I'm a bookworm, a bookworm I am!

What movie can you watch over and over without ever getting tired of?
Besides the obvious cop-out of LBT, Lilo & Stitch is one of my favorite Disney films.

What is your ideal vacation retreat?
Preferably a cooler climate. I enjoyed being in the highlands one.

Do you have any favourite books or book series?
I really enjoyed Agatha Christie's mystery novels. :P

Apologies for the horribly late replies! I literally got dragged into a forced overtime to cover my work unit for two consecutive audits over the past weeks. It was... not pleasant. :sducky Hopefully now that I'm finally free from that whole fiasco I should have more time on my hands.

Do you have any pet peeves?
I'm a very punctual person, so someone being late in a group meetup is my personal pet peeve.

Do you play video games? If so, do you have a favourite game(s)?
I do play games, but not as much as when I was young, and I've never been good at online gaming... heck, I don't have a Steam account, much to my colleagues' chagrin when they tried to drag me into a MOBA session. Anyway, my favorite games in general are the Kirby main series games, as a matter of fact — it's one of the few platformers I don't completely suck at.

What weird food combinations do you really enjoy?
Pineapple on pizza. Think that counts. :Mo

Enraptured. 9/10 :D

Are you brave and have you ever done something bravely which makes you proud?
Nope, nope, nope! I'm the opposite of brave! It's why I identify so much with Petrie to begin with. :opetrie

That being said, I think the bravest thing I've done is be an emcee at a major event. My voice was broadcasted via the microphone to a whole lot of people.

I usually suppress them. It's a bit unhealthy, I'm aware, but I can take a surprising amount of nonsense before snapping.

If you could choose to live in the LBT universe forever, would you take that opportunity? What species would you want to be transformed into?
In a paradoxical kind of sense, the LBT universe seems rather carefree compared to our modern day life. All they have to worry about (mainly) is their next meal, and that applies to both sharpteeth and flatteeth. Almost seems relaxing. No taxes and jobs... though I suppose I'd feel less fulfilled in that world. Now I can see why the farwalkers exist... got too bored of the same 'ol, same 'ol.

That being said, if I really were to take the plunge, I'd be a flyer, almost guaranteed. The opportunity to see the prehistoric world uninhibited from the sky as well as being relatively safe from ground-based predators is pretty much unfair to almost every other species.

Do you like cities or small towns?
Only ever lived in a city, but I suppose I'll like a quaint place to live, ironically.

Best advice you’ve ever gotten?
"Vary your tone when presenting."

Prior to that, I'd always been a monotonous speaker. Must have been a chore to listen to.

Do you like spicy food?
Heavens, no. I can't take spicy food.

If you could live forever, would you?
Title: Re: Owl be here for your Asks
Post by: OwlsCantRead on June 16, 2019, 11:47:19 AM

If you could live forever, would you?
Immortality is an elixir that had been sought by humanity since the earliest days. In a sense, we all share a primal fear of non-existence. At first glance, the answer is obviously 'yes'...

And yet, at the same time, a part of me is conflicted. I wouldn't mind being immortal if it meant living a fulfilling life for all eternity. But if the price of immortality is to be forever alone due to the fate that any friends you make are destined to go before you or to be bored out of your minds... then, no. I'm sure there are many people who lived for less than a century and yet are entirely satisfied with the life, and it is my wish that I would do the same as well.

If you could change one thing about yourself to become a better person, what would be the most important thing to you?
I'll improve on my laziness and procrastination. I fee like I'll be a terrible person to hang out with irl with my current "let me sleep" attitude. :SmugSpike

Who is your role model, if anyone?
Secondary school English teacher. Completely changed my self-deprecating view of myself, and I credit her with giving me the motivation to eventually get better at English, and eventually, writing and presenting.

Lightning is a big one. I freak out majorly if I'm in the open and bolts of fire start raining from the sky.
I'm also intently scared of heights and thus, flying as a subset.
in other words, I'm Petrie :opetrie

I suck at them now, but I do remember loving the concept of The Game of Life. Now it just depresses me though.

I assume that this doesn't take LBT answers because the last one I saw would have otherwise been a rewatch of Journey to Big Water. Else, I recently re-watched Rio and it was quite a charming movie.

For a brand-new film in theaters, I think the last one was Detective Pikachu. Liked that one too!

I know of someone who didn't shower for days in an outdoors camp.

On that note, do you like Pokemon in general?
I used to be a much bigger fan of Pokémon as a kid, up until the end of the Gen 5-ish era. I still like the series, though the drama has significant ramped up in recent years so I've inched away from it gradually as I grew older.

deleted scenes show up pls
For something more realistic, I wish they have better connectivity between the sequel films, despite how much I know it won't happen. We could've have stuff like Ali and Shorty reappearing, for instance, sort of like how Mo made cameos in two films after his debut. It's one thing the TV series tried to remedy, at least.

I'll get back to you when my role model doesn't change constantly. :p

Do you know what you'd rate each LBT movie, and the TV series, out of 10?
Honestly, I can't place a quantifiable rating to the series as a whole. Cliché cop-out, I know, but each film/episode has its merits and ups and downs. In a sense, the reason LBT is comparatively big even in this decade is due to its large number of films and the TV series, so even despite quality differences I will have to give the whole franchise as a whole a decent rating.

Oh, but the first film gets a 9/10. Wisdom of Friends gets an obvious grade too. :p

My apologies if this has been asked before, but I am always curious about people's experiences with technology as time goes by.  So with that in mind, what kind of computers have you had during your life?  Do you remember their operating systems and specifications?
First computer was a shared desktop between my family. It was a Dell running Windows XP SP2 or SP3, Single-core 2GHz Intel Pentium 4 with measly 2GB RAM. Took forever to do anything.

My first laptop I got when I was 45 and it was a dual-core Intel Celeron 1.6GHz. Ran Windows 7, 4GB RAM and acceptable specs for the time, I suppose, but I remember it was kind of below par. Anything intensive wouldn't work on it, Celerons are below i3s, for crying out loud.

The laptop I used for the past 4 years thereafter, from 2014-2018, was a HP EliteBook 8570p. Windows 8.1, 8GB RAM, 512GB HDD, 2.4GHz quad-core i7-3630QM. It is quite the powerhouse, but the AMD GPU bottlenecks it and it is not a super fast i7 considering I used it for video rendering. Has battery issues and would constantly overheat because this specific CPU chip could go up to 104 deg C, too. In the end a combination of the fan unable to cope with that heat and the HDD starting to click led to its demise.

Current laptop I got when the previous one spazzled out at last is an Acer Swift 5. This is the first 1080p display I've got, and it looks really crisp. Windows 10, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD+128MB SDD, quad-core i7-8550U 1.8GHz with Nvidia GeForce MX 150. Really fancy and sleek computer to use and for the first time in a while I feel like I have a modern laptop not capped by anything in my hand.

I would objectively suck at caring for it, but I'll probably be the stock tawny owl. I'd name it Gloam, which refers to the period at dusk where the sun has set and the twilight sky begins toshow.

I definitely did not see the film as a child! Only when I looked it up in 2014 did I see Land Before Time for the first time, and of course I appreciate it and its social commentary because I was grown by then. I lurked in fanfiction for close to 4 years before joining in 2018, and hence most of the stuff I know from the sequels came from fanfic, because I only knew them as they appear in the sequels shortly before I joined the forum, so around Jul-Aug 2018. There was definitely a gap there!
Title: Re: Owl be here for your Asks
Post by: StardustSoldier on November 27, 2019, 01:05:41 AM
For me the gap was a lot less vast, but still somewhat significant. Five months between me seeing the first film compared to the second. But once I saw the second, I watched through the rest of the series pretty quickly.

Well... it was conscription. To say that I was unhappy for having to serve two years without a say would be an understatement.

Basic military and the regimentation expected of a recruit was rather grueling, but after that I got posted to a decent unit, which definitely helped alleviate things. To sum it up: it is an experience for sure, but not one I'd put myself through again. I was rather stressed constantly and around the middle I was made to do far more than what would be expected by my superiors.

As to whether I enjoy it... on the whole, no, but it could definitely have been worse.

Nope, it's new.

- Pay Day. (duh)
- Rest (ofc)
- Quick Guard (let's make it fair for the rat race, no priority for my competition :p)
- Draco Meteor (c'mon, it's cool to summon Meteors)

What was your military service like (in general)? Did you enjoy it?
Well... it was conscription.

It sounds pretty awful from the various things you've told me about it. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Still, were there any things that you did like about it?

I suppose that it did teach me to count my blessings and not take civilian life for granted. I did have to take some leadership role in there, and even though it was thrust upon me without a choice I suppose I did learn a bit from the experience overall.

Do you have a favourite LBT sequel(s)?
Title: Re: Owl be here for your Asks
Post by: OwlsCantRead on December 26, 2019, 03:04:30 AM
I answered this before with The Stone of Cold Fire, still one of the stronger sequels imo.

I enjoy most of them for different reasons, but I suppose if I were to list a favorite that isn't that... probably The Mysterious Island or The Big Freeze. My personal tastes for the sequels have shifted over time, so I would want to rewatch all of them before coming up with a definite ranking. :Mo

Even in the relatively short time that I've been an LBT fan, my personal tastes for the sequels have begun to shift as well. It would be interesting to do another ranking post sometime and see how it's changed from my original ranking.

I'm a night owl, and when I wanted to name my fanfiction profile I thought it would be funny to have an oxymoron, since many think owls are wise, so a bookworm owl that can't read doesn't seem too wise.

...actually that didn't make much sense, but hey it's catchy.
