Yesterday, I went in to take the State knowledge test and I passed!

Now I have my learner's permit and I can start driving!

Well, with my mom of course, I still have to wait six months to start driving alone.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't driver's ed for those with a learner's permit going for their license, so they can take the road test and have a good chance of passing? If your signature was to be believed, you took drivers ed before you had a permit to even drive? :huh:

Well I'm certainly not trying to spoil it, but for sure, I don't know how you can take drivers ed without at least a permit. Either that or I've misread Cyber's dates in his signature somehow. After driver's ed you usually go for a license...is that what you meant Cyber?

No, I have no idea what the laws are in New York, but in Montana you have to take a driver's ed course before you get your permit.

Wow...yeah, that's certainly different.

New York's policy:

Simple written exam (multiple choice), eye exam - you got your learner's permit

You don't need driver's ed to get a license. You can take a "five hour course" pass that, go for your license, and then be able to drive if you pass the road test. Even if you were to get your license here, at your age, you're still restricted to 7am to 9pm until after your eighteenth birthday. ^^

That's different in Montana too. I have my restricted lisence for a year OR until I turn eighteen.

In Pennsylvania, you need to read this pamplet, and then you have to go to the doctor and get a physical check-up, and then bring in the doctor's signature to certify that you have gotten your physical. Then you take the test, and if you pass, you get behind the wheel. After you pass the driving portion of the test, you get your Learner's Permit, and you need 50 hours total of driving. The only restriction is that, with the learner's permit, you must have someone with a driver's license with you. After you meet the requirements, then you get your permanent Driver's License.

It sure is easy for you to get your license. I had to pass a written and a practical test (which I had to take twice as I failed the first time). Until I had my license I had more than 84 hours of driving practice. I had to pay more than 3000 Euro for the training!

I had to pay only $100 for the Traffic Ed course, where I needed at least 42 hours (2 hours a day) in the classroom, and 18 hours in the car. If I take the state knowledge test in class, I qualify for my learner's permit. If I fail (Which I did) I have to go the the DMV and retake it and pass (Which I did) within six months. Then I get my learner's permit for six months and I have to spend at least 50 hours driving, then I get my restricted lisence for a year or until I'm eighteen.

Congrats, Cyberlizard!

The system up here is fairly similar to yours, Petrie.
At age 14, anyone can apply for their learners (no driving from midnight to 5 AM, and a licenced driver must be with them at all times). The learner test consists of a short multiple-choice exam and an eye exam. It costs about $75 in fees if the applicant passes.

The driver can apply for a full licence one year after they receive their learners. They must be at least 16 years old. A 14-year old who just got his learners must wait until his 16th birthday before applying for a full licence. A 15-year-old who just got their learner's just wait 12 months to apply for the full licence.
Driver training is optional. So long as the applicant passes the practical road test, they can receive their full licence. A road test is $35.

If a person desires, they can take drivers education for about $500, once they get their learner's permit. This includes classroom and road training. If a driver completes driver's ed, their insurance rate is reduced, so it's worth it in the long run. I took driver's ed and I pay about $140 per month in insurance.
