Title: Let's play Jeopardy! (LBT-style)
Post by: action9000 on June 10, 2007, 08:31:35 PM
LBTlover and I have been working on setting up an LBT quiz game in the style of the North American game show, "Jeopardy".  Here are the rules that we will be using on the forum:

Seen below is the "game board".  You will see eight "categories" of questions along the top of the board, and the numbers 100 to 500 below each category name.  Each numbered space represents a question.  The higher the number, the more difficult the question.  The question will somehow relate to the category that the numbered square is under.

The game starts with two players: The "Host" and "Lead Player" (the player in charge of picking a square on the board which cooresponds to a question).  I will start the game as the "Host".  The "Host" has a simple job: to make up and ask a question based on the player's choice.

After the question has been posted, ANYONE may *ring in* to answer the question.  If the respondant is correct, they are awarded the number of points shown on that square.  If the respondant is INcorrect, they may not answer that question again and must wait for another question.  If the player answers Correctly, this player is awarded the points on the question square an now becomes the "Lead player".  This player may now choose any new question square to get a question from.  In "real" jeopardy, the "host" never changes but we are going to allow Anyone to ask a question for the sake of our game.  This way, the host doesn't get bored just asking questions and has a chance to score points as well.

NOTE: The host does not get killed when it comes to points.  The host automatically gets 50 points for each answered question and 100 points for each unanswered question.  This helps keep the "host" in the game.

To pick a question square, just use dialog like "The First Film for 200", for example.  The "host" then makes up a question about the first film, of moderately easy difficulty (200 out of 500 isn't all that high).  Remember, we have a lot of LBT experts here so don't make questions *too* easy!  Generally, a 100-point question should be fairly simple and a 500-point question should have quite a bit of complexity or depth to it.

Time Limit: When a question is posted up, players have 24 hours to answer it.  When a guess is made, the timer is reset.  If a correct answer is not posted within 24 hours, the question is removed from the game, the question square on the board is cleared, and play resumes with the same "Lead player" picking a square.

Also, if a question is answered INCORRECTLY 3 times, the question is removed from the game.

When a question is answered correctly, I will remove it from the game board (it will become a blank space) and cannot be chosen again.  When every numbered square on the board is empty, the game is over.  The winner is the player with the most points at this point in time.  We may do a full game (2 rounds like this, and "final jeopardy") if we ever feel like it but for this first game, we'll end it when the board is empty.

We may need to change a rule or two as we go along, but we'll see what happens.

To sum up the rules:
The Lead player chooses a question square.
Anyone can write a question (if you write, you can't answer).
24 hours from the time of the previous guess to answer.
A correct player gets the points marked on the square and becomes the Lead player (can choose the next question square).  Anyone else can read the next question.  YOU MAY ONLY GUESS ONCE ON EACH QUESTION!
After 3 Incorrect answers, the question is thrown out.
The winner is the player with the highest score when all the questions squares are gone.

(*pssst* The winner may get a special treat. We'll see :p  perhaps in the form of a signature award... ;) )

Let's Play jeopardy! :D
Anyone, pick a square and start us off!
When a question square is picked, anyone else can ask a question related to that category and difficulty.

Okay Action9000.  Truthfully, I have only watched Jeopardy once but I think I have the just of it!  Okay...  How about "the first film" for 100?

I wrote the rules assuming that nobody has seen Jeopardy before.  I hope they're clear enough for those like you who haven't seen much of it.

CORRECT!  :D

Current score:
landbeforetimelover: 100
action9000: 50

You still have control of the board, LBTlover.  Pick another one.

(Hey, what do you say to giving the host 50 points when a question is answered correctly or 100 points if a question is not answered correctly?  This way the host doesn't get totally left in the dust and there's some incentive to ask questions.)

Okay, how about songs and music for 100?

These two songs are sung from opposite perspectives.  The musical themes from these songs are used throughout the film that contains the songs.  Name the two songs.

Oh wow....I'd like to say its the "If We Hold On Together" pieces--the one by Diana Ross and the one by Anndi McAfee...different perspectives and you certainly hear that theme repeated many times in the first film.

Never been much of a fan of Jeopardy but I'm pretty savvy with the way it works.
I'm guessing I'll have to wait until Petrie's answer is verified before I can answer or can I throw in an answer now Action?

What is "No one has to be alone" and "On your own"

The perspective in "No one has to be alone" is as the title suggests, no one should truly be alone, and when your with your friends or family, "you don't have to feel afraid of being lost and lonely" and if you stick together, "a bright and shining day" or perhaps a positive outcome, will be the final product. In the song "When your on your own", the perspective is both the pros and cons of being alone, "you can do what you want" but at the same time "you miss your friends, when daylight ends, and theres nobody to care for you".

So those are my thoughts on why they might be different perspectives from each other.

I'll take a stab at it.

I was thinking moreso about the LBT 11 songs "Creepy Crawlies" and "Stupid Stompers". One comes from the view of the GV residents on the little longnecks as being creepy, while the other song was the Tinysauruses answer but from the other perspective.

Howz my aim?

Yeah, that's what I was looking for! :D   Sorry Flathead, you were thinking a little too hard for this one. It's only a 100-point question.  100-point questions are usually kept pretty basic and rely on overall knowledge or simple reasoning.  My question also implied that the songs were both from the same film.
Speaking of 100 points...

I hope this question isn't too difficult for a 100-pointer.

What did George Lucas and Steven Spielberg originally intend "The Land Before Time" to be?

Title: Let's play Jeopardy! (LBT-style)
Post by: action9000 on June 11, 2007, 08:54:06 PM
Darkhououmon told me the answer and I shall try to reword the question.
I hope this makes more sense:

George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg did not originally plan the film "The Land Before Time" as we see it today.  Instead, it was to be in a style not commonly seen in films of the time (or today for that matter).  What is the main difference between the original idea for the style of the film and the style it turned out to be in the end?

I'll sit out this question.  No points for me.

Name the character who is given screen time, did not speak, and received a voice credit at the end of the film, which film this occured in, and the voice actor who really didn't say a word.

Looks like somebody saw the credits the same way I did then. :D

Grandpa Longneck in the original had no speaking role; just a simple chuckle.  He certainly has a credit to Bill Erwin (for providing the chuckle?).  Can't say for sure, but that certainly has fit the question the way I asked it.

Chuckle he did, but according to www.dictionary.com "speak" can be defined simply as
Quote
to utter words or articulate sounds with the ordinary voice
he still "spoke" (using the vocal chords to express an emotion).  I looked it up prior to my answer to make sure I didn't post a wrong answer, as I only had one guess.  Other definitions are: "to express or make known with the voice" or "To produce a characteristic sound: ".  I just think this question deserves a second look, based on the wording.

The spokes dinosaur in LBT 7 never made a *sound* (at least there is no evidence of it) yet he is creditted.

Since this is the first "test run" of LBT Jeopardy, I just want to make sure we can all improve on eliminating "loopholes" in questions and answers.  According to your question, "Tickles" would also be correct, as he never muttered a "word" in any human language, either.  I still think the "Spokes Dinosaur" is the more accurate answer to this question.  I'm curious to hear what everyone thinks about this one.  I can post up a video of the only scenes where this character appears, if you're interested.

Please don't misunderstand me.  Darkhououmon, congrats on nailing the answer! B)  I just want to make sure that questions are as fully-understood as possible.  I interpretted it to mean, by definition of the word "speak", No Vocal Expression At All was uttered by the character.

By the way, I'll have the next board up soon.

Like LBT 8, I watched LBT 7 once and never again.  I don't know who a spokes dinosaur is or was.  I'd consider Tickles "speaking" more than Grandpa longneck in the first film since the kids obviously had a good idea what that little rat was saying with all the squeaks.

In the original "Jeoaprdy" show, the "questions" are normally in the form of a long answer or statement.  The player then needs to answer the "statement" with a "question".  We have been generally ignoring this rule in this game because I didn't want to overcomplicate things.  Anyone who wants to abide by the original Jeopardy statement/question structure, feel free.  I wasn't going to not accept an answer though, because it didn't follow classic Jeopardy rules.

Anyways, TheNumberOneShmuck, go ahead. B)

Ok after three guesses, none guessed right (even though F-22 posted a second response after his first one was incorrect, and partly my fault for not saying you don't get a second chance).

The answer is the Rainbowfaces from LBT 7.  The little riddle makes sense...it was 500 points after all so I wasn't going to make it a cakewalk. :p  They might've been looking into the past or the future, we never really learned anything about them, and they looked so much alike they could've been a clone of the other if not for the different voices.

The music is heard in The Mysterious Island, from when the adults rush to the shore to reunite with the kids, to just after Cera kisses the ground in relief after sliding off of Elsie.

that's 3 wrongs is it not Action?

this was very clever work by Tim :p it is actually several clips from LBT 8 put together from the scene in the spring, so

"What is LBT8 and what are snow and Ducky" or "what are the spring and the mountains" or "who are Thicknose and Littlefoot" or etc...

I found it out just after I answered while talking to him (no he didn't give me the answer flat out, I had to do my homework too :p)

so let's go back a step and take the 400 slot then same division

This song features a clarinet, a tuba and the claim to be the first LBT song primarily in a minor key.

my turn to ask a question Sequels 1997-2007 for 500 :D

here's a fun one :D Lain you have an advantage :p

In the Spanish versions of the movies, when the opening title comes up it is read by Topsy's voice: "La Tierra Antes De Tiempo" and then the title in Spanish of the particular movie

WHICH sequel in Spanish,  makes the slipup of reading the previous title, and what is that title spoken on the movie in Spanish (as phonetically accurate as you can say it if you can't spell it properly)

An ability gained, an ability lost - Spike, not the most articulate, but rather strong (all of it)

Fight fire with fire - Ducky (obscure, but I can't think of another) when the Sharpteeth threatened Spike in II she distracts them by jumping on them

Fear lies within - Petrie, always scared (any movie)

Stir up trouble, let it grow - Cera, seems to challenge Littlefoot a lot, regardless of its logic (losing the group in I)

Innovation, key of the future - Littlefoot, wily, crafty, a thinker (throughout)

Nice answers. But they are all incorrect, I am afraid. Great try though. ^^

An edit on the question. The statements are mostly describing events that have occurred in the LBT series, not strictly the personality of each character. I hope this helps.
Title: Let's play Jeopardy! (LBT-style)
Post by: Petrie. on June 17, 2007, 07:02:44 PM
I think what's going to make this question hard is it will be very hard to match exactly what you're thinking of Kacie, so you might have to bend and look around the box a bit.  I liked Tails' answers.

Anyhow, let me try:

An ability gained, an ability lost - I'm going to guess Spike here.  He did manage to at least speak one word--"Ducky" but he hasn't spoken again since.

Fight fire with fire - I'm guessing Littlefoot.  A good example would be in the first film when reasoning does not work with Cera, he resorts to fighting her the only way she'd understand.

Fear lies within - Petrie, no doubt; he's expressed many times where he seems to be not afraid of things, only to come back and say nope (he wouldn't fly over the big water).

Stir up trouble, let it grow - Pretty sure this is Cera.  She isn't exactly a peach in any of the films.  I guess the worst can be in LBT 5 or 6 (going on memory here) when she refused to side with the group and blame others for problems.

Innovation, key of the future - I think this is Ducky believe it or not.  Only thing I can think of is when she asks the bullies in the third film if they'd rather not share water that was found, and ultimately, that is what happens in the future.

Title: Let's play Jeopardy! (LBT-style)
Post by: Flathead770 on June 18, 2007, 12:00:13 AM
Wow this one is tough!
Ok here are my thoughts:

An ability gained, an ability lost-I'm gonna have to say that its petrie, he learns how to fly in the 1st movie, but loses his bravery (1st movie he risks his life to save ducky, but in later films, like lbt 9, hes too scared to cross the canyon to tell the grown ups that they've been separated).

Fight fire with fire-This i guess would have to be spike. Not being able to speak or communicate that well to the other gang members. The only way he can help out is by physical strength.

Fear lies within- This would be cera. Though she tries to act tough and not afraid but really she is (in the tv episode "the spooky nighttime adventure" she acts like shes not afraid of the hidden runner and she hasn't had sleep stories when she really was.

Stir up trouble, let it grow-Believe it or not, i think its ducky becuase she can be very gulible, like in the 1st movie where cera goes the wrong way, and ducky follows cera becuase of her promise of her path being easier. Cera starts the problems, ducky can make it worse.

Innovation, key to the future- Littlefoot, he comes up with most all of the plans, like how to kill the sharptooth in the 1st film, or how to lead guido away from danger when he was sleep walking.
Title: Let's play Jeopardy! (LBT-style)
Post by: DarkHououmon on June 18, 2007, 01:27:22 AM
Nope.

That's three guesses. So I'll reveal the answers. This question was tougher than I had intended it to be. o.O  I like everyone's guesses. Clever, never would have thought of them. ^^

An ability gained, an ability lost

Answer: Spike
Explaination: While it is true that Spike speaks in LBT4 and seemingly never speaks again, this is not why this clue fits him, because he does indeed talk in a later sequel, in LBT8, when he shouts "MOMMA!" In LBT1, Spike is seen swimming in deep water with ease, no trouble at all. But in LBT8, we learn that he cannot swim and Spike is seen struggling to keep himself from sinking. From the span of LBT1 to LBT8, Spike had lost the ability to swim.

The clue was referring to an ability that was both gained and lost, not two seperate abilities.

Fight fire with fire

Answer: Ducky
Explaination: In LBT8, Ducky becomes angry with Spike, and becomes uncomfortable as the negative feeling starts to grow inside her. Misunderstanding Cera's advice, Ducky decides to get "pay back" by making Spike feel bad by staying angry at him.

The clue is a familiar phrase, although it does not neccessarily always mean a physical battle. Ducky was trying to invoke negative feelings on Spike (guilt) to relieve her own negative feelings (anger), using a negative feeling against a negative feeling.

Fear lies within

Answer: Cera
Explaination: Throughout the movie series, we have seen times when Cera is afraid, but pretends like she isn't, like in LBT1 when she pretends that she wasn't afraid when telling the tale of her encounter with Sharptooth underground. In the TV show, when the gang hunt for Hidden Runner, Cera attempts to hide her fear by lying about her dreams and putting on a brave face, only to confess in the end, revealing she was scared what the others might think of her if she revealed she was afraid.

The clue was, I admit, a bit of a trick question. The clue states "lies within", which usually means something that is hidden from view, concealed behind a front, sort of speak. So the statement "Fear lies within" was talking about a character who did not appear afraid on the outside, but was terrified on the inside.

Stir up trouble, let it grow

Answer: Littlefoot
Explaination: In LBT11, Littlefoot attempts to eat the tree-sweets, but ends up knocking them down. In an attempt to protect himself, he blames little dinosaurs he saw earlier. This creates panic among the valley denizens, and they start hunting the little dinosaurs relentlessly. Littlefoot makes no attempt to make things right, and he allows the lie and the trouble to grow until it is almost too late.

Stirring up trouble does not always have to be done with violence. It can be done with a simple lie, and allowing that lie to grow out of porportion. This is exactly what Littlefoot had done.

Innovation, key to the future

Answer: Petrie
Explaination: In LBT12, The Great Day of the Flyers was the test young flyers had to endure to be considered old enough to fly with the adults. For generations, it was always the same, a simple coordinated flight where all the flyers soar in unison. Petrie, however, changes all this with his free-style flying. This inspires all the other flyers, including the observing adults, to begin flying the way they want to. Petrie's mother comments that the Great Day of the Flyers would never be the same.

The term "innovation" means doing something new, radical, very different. Petrie's free-style technique had not been attempted before, and it is likely this will stick for generations to come. One little flyer had changed the future with a single innovative idea.

So...whose turn is it to choose the category?

Mr. Thicknose is the answer I was looking for.  When the adults don't believe in him any longer because he'd never experienced snow, Littlefoot and the Gang go to find him for help and stick with him.  And what he hadn't learned can be heard in that song he belts out.

Tim, if you can provide me with why Chomper is a good choice maybe I can accept two answers.

When Chomper is born, Littefoot is the only member of the Gang who (after initial shock) originally returns to the infant to comfort him.
Littlefoot: "Aww, he doesn't look so dangerous."

Quote
When others turn away.
The rest of the Gang has trouble accepting Chomper, especially after he bites Cera following the song.
Cera: "A sharptooth can Never be one of us!"
Ducky: "Chomper is....different than us."

Quote
There's one thing I had not learned
Since my hatchday.
One key thing he will never learn, due to his being a sharptooth: to survive in the Great Valley and live in harmony with the other inhabitants of the Valley.  Chomper is unable to adapt to eat Green Food and will not be able to survive on insects indefinitely.  Chomper has yet to learn his true place in the world; as a sharptooth.  The current TV series (which Chomper present in the GV, with his leafeater friends) is proof of this fact.

whose call? if me I'll just finish the guest charas up :p

BTW after speculation:

Bullies - Littlefoot goes to save them after all they did, they didn't learn compassion or sharing

Pterano - Petrie adored Pterano, he never learned to take responsibility

Tinysauruses - saved by Littlefoot, didn't learn ... well okay, so this one didn't work :p

they didn't learn that the large beings aren't all dumb and selfish! ha!

Mo - the adults want nothing to do with him, the gang doesn't really either, Littlefoot insists to save him, Mo is too busy having fun to understand what's important

Shorty - Bron cares for him regardless of how much of a troublemaker he is, he hasn't learned decency :p

Guido - kinda outcasted, Petrie becomes his friend, he didn't learn to fly (either)

I think that's all for now

Based on Littlefoot1616's interpretion of LBT as of late, Chomper could still be considered a "guest character".  He has appeared in only a couple of movies, and I don't expect him to appear in LBT 13.  The TV series is kind of "the exception to the rules" when it comes to LBT, it seems.

Post by: Petrie. on June 23, 2007, 07:17:00 AM
No, Dil really can't see well, and there are many times she said that she couldn't and ran into things so she didn't act as if she wasn't blind.

And no, Chomper isn't the answer...if you eat insects, you're still eating the body of another, and last I checked, that constitutes a carnivore.

LBT 5 (as the first sequel produced by Charles Grosvenor I guess it would rank as one of the later sequels)? We learned what had happened to Chomper (though in spite of the title "The mysterious Island" I'm not sure if it qualifies as a mystery) and there was the near unsolveable conflict of whether or not it was possible for Littlefoot and his friends to live along with Sharpteeth. While basically solved by the promise of Chomper's parents not to hurt them that promise was not put on the test when Littlefoot and the others were offered the possibility to return to their families just moments after Chomper's parents made that promise.

I will admit that PhantomSpinosaur was on the right track. The sequel was indeed Land Before Time 10, and the problem that was solved was the fate of Littlefoot's father, where he has been all this time, and the fact that he was alive.

The only thing he got wrong was the conflict that arose from the realization that Bron was alive. Bron himself, with his story he tells to Littlefoot, conflicts with the original LBT. Bron's story, so far, does not make sense with the events of the first movie. The pieces don't seem to fit together.

I guess I'll throw out a question.

This film is the second occurance of a very special event, of which you almost never see the result of the first occurance.  What is the film and special event?

Stitch, I'd like to think its when Littlefoot remembers his mother in LBT 10.  Its been so long since I've seen that and without a copy at hand I couldn't tell you what was "flashed back" but I do remember it being there.

Sorry Petrie, it's not that.

A better way of phrasing it would be: Something that happened in a very recent sequel, that hasn't happened since one of the first sequels.

I'm gonna take a guess.

What is Land Before Time 12?

An egg had been laid, something we haven't seen since LBT2, if I recall correctly. The egg hatches into Cera's sister.

But I'd have to agree with Manny. The way the question is written doesn't seem to make much sense.

Honestly. Alex would disqualify you on Jeopardy! if you gave an answer like that. You did give me a good idea. Sorry I have to do this, but...

Was it an egg hatched? (neither of the eggs were laid on-screen)

I could ask you the same question. I was saying that if this were the real Jeopardy!, if the egg laying answer is correct, there's a chance you could be disqualified for your phrasing. I've seen it happen all too often. Just recently, I saw a contestant get nuked out of Final Jeopardy! for incorrect spelling of a word that produced an extra syllable. Right now, I'm waiting for Stitch to tell us if the egg laying deal was right.

Wha... well, if that's the case, we're ALL wrong. Where is this scene in LBT 9?

Also, is this going to be as strict as classic Jeopardy! (disqualifying members in the manner I spoke of) or is this going to be more loose? This little incident has got me wondering....

Manny Cav got it.  It wa an egg hatching.  I would have accepted either film 9 or 12.

Sorry I didn't word it better.

DarkHououmon may deserve the credit instead, depending on action9000's ruling on the whole "mis-phrasing thing."

I really don't know who deserves the credit.

As for disqualification, from what I heard, you won't be disqualified if you don't completley word the answer into a question, unless I am mistaken.

That wasn't exactly what I was talking about. I was referring to "an egg was hatched, not laid." Again, we'll just have to wait from an update from action9000.

I also believe season changes has only happened a couple times... "The time of the changing treestars" and the Big Freeze if I'm right...

Heh, I suppose I should get back on track with this game! :P:

I'm going to give it to "Manny Cav".
This is because the egg in LBT 2 was laid some time ago (it hatched only soon after the Gang found it so it has been around for some time, assuming we are referring to Chomper).  Also, the egg in LBT 12 hatched during the short timeframe of the film so it must have also been laid quite some time ago.

Hmmhmm. :) :)  Depending on how you interpret it, you could have also added Mr. Threehorn to the list as Cera said that her father said flatheads had small brains, but she could've substituted that herself.

Wait for Tim to update the score chart and pick a new category.
