Heya!  :wave
I thought I'll try this out too.

Heyho, let's go! Ask me what you want!

Where did your original inspiration for Sky come from?

How long have you been an artist?

Caustizer
The inspiration for Sky came with the 12th movie of LBT when I first saw Guido.
I liked the design of a microraptor and so, before I was even a member here, I came up with the wingtails (I haven't made up the species name yet though).

jedi472
I guess for 2-3 years. Actually, I started drawing in 2004 when I was still at middle school. But quite rarely. I gave it up a few months later...
After seeing an LBT movie in 2007, it made me an artist again. But this time, for real.  ;)

I might as well help you fill up your questions thread  :lol

Apart from Sky, Star, and Glide, who would you say is your favourite character in the story so far?

And of course, tell me why.  :smile

Before I ask my question, I want you to know two things:

1. I love your avatar and would never wish for you to change it.

2. I feel like my brain hasn’t been firing on all cylinders lately (probably the result of being assigned too many confusing college assignments :wacko); hence, my question is a little absurd. :P:

I just can’t help but ask: In your avatar, what’s holding up the pencil on Sky’s head? He’s got no ears. :lol

Hard to say... there are many great characters.
But I think I would go with Eybron (for now). He caught my attention when he wanted to date Star. The thing he said to Glide, about how lonely life for her would be without a mate, was really mean, but it made perfect sense. So he's like an intelligent villain and I like that. :D

Pangaea
Argh, so someone finally found out! :lol
With duct tape maybe? I can't really tell... I just thought a pencil would fit. ^^
I actually wanted to change my avatar for some time... of course it'll be the LBT-Style Sky, just without the glasses and pencil. :lol But I'm glad you like it so much.  ;)

^ Ah, maybe he's got it tucked into some feathers on the side of his head. :p Who cares? It looks great. (The perfect avatar for an LBT artist, in my opinion.)

Is there a complete version of that image anywhere? I’d like to see it uncropped. :yes

That is such a good picture... now you can see why I was inspired to write Far Away Home based on a single work of art.

Hmm I just noticed I'm only 6 posts away from becoming a queen.... huzzah!

Well, I wanted to change my avatar for so long now (as it is really old now) and finally decided to update. :)

Do you draw any of your inspiration from any other artists/animators/cartoonists from the industry? If so, who and what do you admire about them.
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on February 06, 2010, 12:19:34 PM
Inspiration comes from everywhere so I don't really have someone I could admire.  :)
Though, I was watching some Disney classics like Tarzan or Lion King and I must say, the music is the one which inspires me a lot... especially music from Phil Collins.
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Caustizer on February 10, 2010, 05:04:10 PM
I love music from the Lion King too and I especially love Phil Collins, here is a video of Elton John singing "Circle of Life" live,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_khgAzMido (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_khgAzMido)

Also, I have a question for you Sky.

What do you plan to do in the comic you are working on?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on February 11, 2010, 02:36:57 PM
Yeah, the soundtrack of Lion King and it's sequel are awesome. Though, I prefer the movie version of "Circle of Life".  :p

To your question:
I haven't started writing the story down yet. School keeps me busy.  <_<
The rough idea is, that Sky can't remember his past. He spent most of his years in the Great Valley enjoying his life not worrying about it... until he meets a certain girl named Star.

The title is still undecided.  :p
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Caustizer on February 14, 2010, 02:28:51 AM
Is your character Star based on a real person or is she completely fictional?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on February 14, 2010, 06:12:39 AM
Hard to say... first, I just thought making a new character.
I few weeks after that, I had an LBT dream with the gang playing around while Star surprised and kissed me.
It was weird at first, but I seem to like her more and more, even though she is not real.

Later on DeviantArt, a friend said that she could be someone I have met or someone I will meet in the future. Now that I'm thinking about it, there was one girl I always played with when I was little. We were best friends but now I don't have any contact to her.

So Star is basically a mix of fiction and real.  :yes
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me

Was Glide created solely for the purpose of being an antagonist towards Sky and Star's relationship, or did you have more plans for him as a character?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on March 19, 2010, 08:08:54 AM
Actually, when I drew the "Forgotten Friends" comic, the cover was a bit 'empty' and I just added Glide to fill the picture. He wasn't Star's brother at that time.

More plans? Hmm... I'm not quite sure yet. But reading your fanfic sure gives me some ideas. :yes
I hope I'll come up with something interesting while writing the comic (which is about 1/4 finished).  :)

Having seen your (very nice :yes) latest art piece, I noticed that Star seems to have membranous wings like a pterosaur, with a layer of feathers on top, while Sky's wings are entirely feathered. Any reason for the difference?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on March 22, 2010, 03:33:17 AM
Female wingtails have membranous wings. Male wingtails have fully feathered.  :)
Also note that females have a skirt-like bottom while males have shorts-like one.

I wanted to seperate their gender somehow so I came up with these ideas.  :yes

Well this isn't really a question, but I seriously like the "Dawn of a Wingtail" picture in your signature. From design (especially design - I suck at that) to artwork, it's verrrry well done. I wish I had your talent. :]

Which do you see as the best talent a person can possess... artistic talent, writing talent, or linguisitic talent?

Also, are you making any progress on your Dawn of a Wingtail Comic Strip?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on April 16, 2010, 04:38:35 PM
Hard to say... I think every person should have their own talent. :yes It would be boring if everyone can do the same thing like the other.  :p

Not quite. Other than drawing concept arts, the story is still far from finished.  :o

Do you want to use any of the Far Away Home characters or personalities in your comic, or is it a strictly seperate universe?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me

It would be nice and kinda funny if a character of Far Away Home would have a 'guest appearance' in the comic.  :DD With your permission of course. :yes
Other than that, Dawn of a Wingtail will be a completely different universe.

In Far Away Home, which group do you find more interesting to follow... Sky and Littlefoot's group or Cera and Ruby's group?

Also, what do you think about Glide's character developments over the past few chapters?

It's just for the fun of it. :) I can express my feelings by just drawing a picture and it's a different way to tell a story, like the "a picture is worth a thousand words".  :yes

Whoops. Sorry Caustizer, I overlooked your question.  :oops

To give it an answer:
Actually, I find Ruby's group more interesting to follow as you can see more new characters than Sky's group. :yes

And about Glide... hmm, I think he makes an interesting development, from a bad guy to a 'nicer' bad guy.  :smile
I guess Star's request to help the children influenced his character.  :p

Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on June 04, 2010, 12:35:03 PM
Currently storyboarding on the first few pages. You know, paneling on how the pages should look like. :)
Even though the story is finished, I have an unsure feeling that the story isn't "deep" enough.
For example the villains. I'm unsure of their purpose, if their reasons are enough for being this and that... that goes also for other characters as well.

I might change the storyline slightly as I progress, trying to make it movie-like.  ;)

Are the variably shaped projections on the tails of your wingtail characters supposed to be comprised of feathers, or are they more like the vanes on the tails of some pterosaurs, made of reinforced skin?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on June 11, 2010, 04:29:04 PM
Caustizer
The comic may get 50+ pages by the looks of it. :)

Pangaea
Their tails are more of a vane than feathers. But some wingtails have a few feathers added.  ;)

From all the movies, it's either 9 or 12. 9 was one of the better sequels in my opinion and I like the last song so much. And of course Mo.
12 because of Guido.  :D He's such an awesome character and my inspiration for the wingtails. :^.^:

Unless answering this question would be a spoiler to the story (in which case I wouldn’t want it answered), why is your LBT fancomic titled “Dawn of a Wingtail”? :)
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me

^ Dawn doesn't always mean the sun rising, it's also a new beginning (at least it says "Beginn" in german in my dictionary :p)
So I thought "Begin of a new Journey" at first for a title but it sounded boring so I went with "Dawn of a Wingtail" instead. :^.^:

^ Hey, that just gave me an idea! :idea Since you opened the comic with a scene of Sky watching the sun set (or at least trying to :p), maybe at the end you could have a scene where he is watching the sun rise (assuming it doesn’t conflict with whatever plans you may have already had).

Do you draw (and color) the comic on paper or on the computer? Or both? :)

Does the picture appear on the tablet as well while you are drawing it? Or is it just on the monitor, and the tablet is just the surface you move your pen over (like a mousepad to a mouse)? I ask because I'd really like to learn to draw using the computer, but I'm so used to drawing on paper and seeing my hand, my drawing implement, and the picture at the same time, that I fear I'll have trouble adjusting.

^ The picture you are drawing can only be seen at your monitor and yeah, the tablet would be like a mousepad with the pen as a mouse.
But there is also the 'Cintiq' tablet from Wacom (something I always wanted but cannot afford...:cry): Wacom Cinitq (http://www.wacom.com/cintiq/)
With a Cintiq, you can see your drawing on the tablet screen just like you would draw on paper.  :D

I have a Wacom Bamboo Fun (http://www.galmac.ie/images/wacom_bamboo_fun.jpg). Wacom's tablets are quite good in my opinion. :)

I use Photoshop 7.0 for coloring and Manga Studio EX4 for the lineart.
But I recently got into Paint Tool SAI to do the lineart. They look much smoother and dynamic that way. :^.^:
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me

This is based on a topic Caustizer brought up (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=7940&view=findpost&p=9198168) in your Dawn of a Wingtail thread:

Do male wingtails have wing membranes like the females that are just hidden by their feathers, or are their wings comprised entirely of feathers like a bird's? I always assumed it was the latter, but thinking about it, it would be more scientifically believable if both male and female wingtails had membranes, and different feather distribution patterns, as opposed to having completely different wing structures.
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on July 29, 2010, 11:01:29 AM
Woah! How could I miss this question? Sorry to keep you waiting.  :oops

I knew the problem with their wings will come up sooner or later...
Well, male wingtail wings are completely feathered. No membranes at all.
Female have membraned wings, but with a secondary pattern of feathers attached.

Now I'm not a scientific guy, I just gave them different wings to differ who's male or female. I was young and thought the idea was cool (though, the way I draw female wings doesn't look as good as male wings).  :p

Aah... things like this regarding character designs makes me feel sad and unsafe about their current appearance.  :(
I would like to see them more realistic, but I have no idea how.
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Pangaea on July 29, 2010, 11:55:56 AM
^ Well…you could us the idea I suggested that male wingtails DO have membranes, but unlike the females, which only have a single row of feathers close to the arm, they have feathers covering the entire membrane, thus obscuring it. Or you could say that males have smaller membranous wings than females, so they compensate by having more extensive wing feathers. Alternatively, you could go the opposite route and say that female wingtails have reduced wing feathers and larger membranes. I don’t know what you envisioned for wingtail nesting and parenting behavior, but one explanation you could use is that female wingtails evolved featherless membranous wings for nest brooding, the better for transferring heat to eggs and chicks. (Many modern birds shed the feathers from patches of their undersides during nesting season, exposing blood-vessel-rich skin for this exact purpose, as feathers are poor conductors of heat.)

I’d be happy to help you brainstorm further ideas for wingtail biology if you like. :)

New question: What are the dimensions of your Wacom tablet? I’m thinking of saving up for a drawing tablet (maybe even a Cintiq), but I’m not sure whether I should shoot for one with a big 17” x 12.75” screen, or a smaller 10.3 x 6.4”. I thought I’d ask the master what he recommends. :angel
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on July 29, 2010, 03:08:11 PM
Hmm, never thought about the nest brooding... now it makes sense to me.  :)
I'm still unsure about the male's wings. Are you suggesting that their membranes are completely covered by feathers that you can't see them (like they were never there) or that you can see them only slightly? :confused

As for the tablet, hmm... hard to say. If you buy a Cintiq, I suggest to test it out first and look at the system requirements.
Smaller tablets are less expensive and you can take them anywhere with you. Though, bigger tablets give you more 'freedom' (as in more space) to work with. :)
But I recommed to test drawing on a simple, not too expensive tablet first if you're not familiar with it so you have a much better impression. :^.^:

Oh yeah, my tablet is 8.4 x 7.6.  ;)

Yeah, the first thing you said is exactly what I had in mind. :yes My thought was that the feathers that fringe the wing (the primaries) are attached to the edge of the membrane, so the membrane is hidden even though there are spaces between the feathers. That way, you could say that male wingtails always had membranes without contradicting all of your previous artwork.

When you originally created the wingtails, what did you envision their diet to be? Did you come up with the idea that they loved fish, or was that Caustizer's invention?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on July 30, 2010, 04:57:03 PM
Oh, I see now.  :)

As for your question:
The fish thing was Caustizer's idea. :) They were supposed to eat green food at the very beginning. But after reading his fanfic, it made more sense to me if they would eat fish also rather than green food only. But they can eat both. :^.^:

Hi Sky,
I was wondering if you could give me any suggestions on how to create better shadowing in my photoshop images. Do you also use the burn tool to create your shadows or is there a more suitable tool? Do you first select the area that is to be shadowed or do you draw it free hand? Are there any guidelines by your experience as for which level of opacity is suitable in various light conditions (dawn, day, dusk, night etc.)?
I would really appreciate any help you might be able to offer :)
By the way, do you use MSN by any chance or (well, I don't want this to come across as pestering now though I must admit that there is a pestering quality to this question :oops) is there any chance that you might give it a try?

^ Wow, so many questions. I feel honored. Okay, let's see...

I don't use the burn tool to shade my pictures. :) I just use normal brushes with a darker tone of the color I want to shade. I have an extra file with various color palettes and I use a graphics tablet (so I draw free hand). I don't know if it's suitable than the burn tool... I guess you have to try it out. :)

Opacity... you mean the shades? Hmm... though question. I usually experiment until it fits to the rest of the picture. Not the best advice, huh?  :p

And yes, I have MSN. :yes But I'm afraid to tell you that I use it rarely or not at all.  :slap
But if you still want my adress, send me a PM.  :)

Aye that's what I did (after some try and error with the burn tool when it comes to lighting characters where the colors are usually very clearly defined. I was not precise with my question. What in case of adding light and shadow effects to something that does not consist of clearly defined and bordered colors but many small spots of varying colors (e.g. tree tops where the leaves have been done with the leaf shaped brush)?

For these kinds, I make my own brushes. :) I start off with a base color and shape and then start shading/lighting it as I would with bordered colors. Same goes with grass.
I used this tutorial for both, maybe it's useful: Tutorial (http://darkdragon774.deviantart.com/art/WP-BG-Tutorial-clouds-n-grass-71722699)

Awesomeness! I never created an own brush before even though I have often sorely missed something as basic as a square or rectangular brush on photoshop (maybe they left such elementary stuff out to encourage people to get in touch with the option of creating once own brushes). Thanks a lot Sky :yes

Compared to a human?
Let me see... about 2-3 heads larger to an avarage human (7-8 feet perhaps?). :)
I made a drawing once with Sky and me but it's an awfully drawn picture and not very accurate... :p

WHOA! :o  :wow I imagined they would either be pretty small (3–4 feet tall), or around human-sized (6 feet, tops).

I generally think of the gang as being pretty small; maybe that has something to do with my low size expectations. :p About what sizes do you see the gang as being?

I looked up how large a Pteranodon was and they were (fully grown) about 6 feet tall (I also looked at Petrie's bio at the character list) and wingtails should be a bit larger.  :p
I think I've read somewhere here that Littlefoot was on eye level to an avarage human so having Sky being a young adult made me think of them to be much larger. Uhm, I think that answered your new question too.  :)

*sigh* But I guess Caustizer did a much better job at this than me...

Ah, don’t be hard on yourself. No one’s really sure how large the gang is supposed to be, and there are a lot of different interpretations. For a long time I thought of the gang as being REALLY small, with the largest members being only about three feet long! :wow Nowadays I think of them as being larger, maybe around twice that size, give or take. Anyway, you can probably change your estimates as well.

Do wingtails have teeth? Or just beaks?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on August 18, 2010, 10:11:40 AM
Hard question... I'm not quite sure myself actually.    Can birds even get teeth?
Anyway, I drew them sometimes with teeth to strengthen their expression and emotions. So I would say, yes, they have teeth.  :o
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Pangaea on August 18, 2010, 11:14:42 PM
Well, it’s been found that a mutation in chicken embryos can cause them to grow teeth, but they never survive long enough to hatch (Article here (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=mutant-chicken-grows-alli)). It’s likely that birds still possess the genes for teeth, but they are inactive. I don’t know if it is possible for those genes to be “switched on” in such a way that a bird develops teeth and survives to adulthood.

Anyway, I’ve always interpreted your wingtail characters as being sort of intermediate between dinosaurs and true birds. After all, they have dinosaur characteristics such as hands and a long, bony tail, a little like Archaeopteryx or Microraptor. (Didn’t you even say that their design was originally inspired by Guido?) And the fact that their wings have membranes clearly sets them apart from other birds. The way I see it, they’re sort of like “alternative birds”; a type of feathered dinosaur that developed a different way to fly (membranous wings with feathers on them instead of purely feathered wings). Thus they’re very similar to birdsóand could be even called birds, just as Archaeopteryx is called a bird despite the high likelihood that it was not a direct ancestor of birdsóbut they’re technically not true birds.

And, of course, creatures in animated films that are toothless in reality are often given temporary teeth for the same reasons you described. So arguably, wingtails could still be toothless.

Okay, new question: Is that notch in Sky’s tail vane a scar of some kind? If so, where did he get it?

Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Pangaea on August 23, 2010, 10:38:00 PM
I’m trying to color something in on Photoshop, but am struggling with two things:

ï I can’t draw a lighter color over a darker color, and when I draw a darker color over a lighter color, it just ends up as a mixture between the two colors. For example, it won’t let me draw a white line on top of black, and if I try to draw a black line on purple, it ends up being dark purple.

ï I can’t use the Pencil, Brush, Eraser, or even the Bucket tool without the color I am adding blending with an adjacent color. For instance, if I’m filling in a blank space with blue right next to black, I end up with a bluish-black line where the colors meet.

As a Photoshop expert, could you please tell me if there is some kind of special tool or way to adjust the settings that would allow me to get around these problems? I would enormously appreciate it.
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on August 24, 2010, 09:49:58 AM
Hmm... do you work on seperate layers? Like, Layer1 is black and Layer2 is blue? It's really important.
You have probably given one of the layers a 'blending option'. On your layer window (depending which version of Photoshop you have), you can see a dropdown menu that gives your layers these options (multiply, screen, soft light,...). Your first problem sounds like that the layer was on 'multiply'. Just set it on 'normal' and you should do fine. :)

If not, then it might have something to do with opacity. On the layer window, there is the opacity option. Put it on 100%. You might want to check the 'fill' option under the 'opacity' option too as it's the same like the opacity option but adjusts only the layer itself without adjusting given layer-'styles'.

If the problem still occurs, click on the tool you were using to draw your lines and look on the top of your screen. Brushes for example have the same options (blending options, opacity) like above. Put them on normal and 100% opacity.

Your second problem might also have something to do with the above problem so it would be best to solve that one first. :yes
You could try using the 'magic wand' tool. Click on the surface you want to color, then go to the menu and click 'Select'->'Modify'->'Expand...'.
Put 1 or 2 pixels to expand. Now make a new layer above and fill the space with color.

Well, that's all I know and I hope it will solve your problems.  :)
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Pangaea on August 27, 2010, 02:48:01 AM
Thank you very much, Sky. I wasn’t aware of how important the layers were. I understand them a lot more now, thanks to you. :) As for the problem with the Brush, I realized that I should have just been using the Pencil tool. :yes

New Photoshop question: I’m trying to digitally color a scanned piece of lineart, with the color on a separate layer from the lineart so that I can color the image without crossing over the lines, and then have the lineart be the top layer. Is there a way to set up the picture so that the blank spaces in each layer are transparent, and only the colored areas are opaque?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on August 27, 2010, 03:47:48 PM
If you make a new layer, that layer should automatically be transparent. If you draw on it, everything else should be still transparent except the things you drew on that layer. :)

There is also the 'Magic Wand Tool'. Use the tool and click on all the blank spaces you want to remove and press 'Delete' on your keyboard. Note that the tool marks everything of the same color. So if you have a color and a 'slightly' different color next to it (without a border), the tool may mark the second color as well. After erasing, some spots may still be present and therefore use the eraser with a hard brush to remove them. :yes

I'm not sure if I gave you the right information you wanted to know. It's probably easier if you only wanted to remove the white spaces of your scanned lineart.

Journey Into Blacksun will feature the kids of the gang, instead of the gang of seven themselves.

What is your opinion of this? Do you think that the new characters give oppertunity for more development, or that it is too much of a deviation from the spirit of the Land Before Time?

Thanks (again) for the Photoshop advice, Sky. :)

If you’re busy, then no hurry in answering this next question. It’s just another little odd one regarding one of your OCs:

What exactly are the little star shapes on the sides of Star’s head? Oddly shaped feather? Patches of skin? Or just a quirk of coloration; a pair of spots that happen to be shaped like stars? Or are they actually not even a part of Star, and artificially affixed to her head as decorations? (They remind me a bit of earrings, come to think of it.)
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me

Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me

That makes more sense, anyway; like I pointed out before, Sky doesn't have ears to hold a pencil on his head, so what's Star going to attach earrings to? :p

It occurred to me recently that the only wingtails I've ever seen you draw are Sky, Star, Glide, and Eybron from Far Away Home. Have you ever drawn any other wingtails, or had ideas for other wingtail characters?

Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me

Hmm... I'd recommend the Bamboo Pen (http://www.wacom.com/bamboo/bamboo_pen.php) from Wacom. Those are really good (and pretty cheap in my opinion), but you can use any graphics tablet for testing. :)
If you buy a tablet, please remember:

People who work the first time with a tablet will hate it to 95%!

It's because they are not used to, to work with a pen instead of a mouse. I hated it in the beginning too so don't worry if you don't like it at the start. ;)
When you get used to it, you'll probably work with it more often than with your mouse. ^__^

Sadly, we don't own a pet. I would like to keep a dog as a pet, but my mother is allergic to animals. =/

Caustizer:
Unfortunately, I still haven't started yet drawing the revised version. Fortunately though, I have christmas holiday so I have the time now to work on it. :)

To your second question... hmm, they both have a strong will, They are very protective and caring towards their friends. Ha, they also love the crimson wingtail Star with a passion too. :) Hmm... that are all similarities I can think of.
So, while the FAH Sky is a teacher, a much more mature, calm and intelligent wingtail, the other Sky is slightly less mature, adventurous and quite shy.
I'm not saying that I don't like the differences, I actually like it that way that they are both still different from each other!
(Except you meant MY version of LBT Sky, not anthro )

And lastly, no, I haven't drunk alcohol before in my life. ;)

I’m surprised I didn’t think of this question until Caustizer brought up that note about Glide’s crest in your art thread: :o

What are the wingtails’ crests made of? Are they feathers (as I’ve always assumed), supported by bone like Dilophosaurus’s crest and Stegosaurus’s plates, or comprised of non-bony tissue (e.g., skin, keratin) like chicken combs, iguana spines, and some pterosaur crests? (They could be either rigid or pliable in the last case.)

Also, are the crests in a fixed position, or can they be moved (raised up, fanned out, flattened against the neck, etc.) like many birds’ crests?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on January 30, 2011, 04:59:53 AM

Sky was created when I first watched the 12th movie. Just after that, I registered here and Sky was finally born, and just because I needed a nice looking avatar. :^.^: Today he's practically a part of me.
As for Star, I thought it would be fun to create more characters. :) I intended to make her look like Petries mother with a star shaped mark on her eye at first. I was thinking something along the lines of she corners part of the gang and says "I caught you... hehe now mom says I get to eat you." but she doesn't remember what's supposed to come inbetween the catching and the eating. Cloud tricks her into going back and asking her parents to find out.

Btw, are you still working on Dawn of a Wingtail? It's been so long since you did a page.

But your version is cute too. :^.^:

Sky, I don't know if you remember or not, but back in November I promised that I'd make a card for your 21st birthday. Obviously, I have failed miserably in delivering it on time; I just finished DarkHououmon's card over a week ago, and have yet to even start on yours. :oops So I thought I'd ask you, would you rather receive an extremely belated 21st star day card, or would you rather I do what The Chronicler suggested I do with his card, and give it to you on your next birthday?

Nope, it has no actual meaning. I was somewhat Anime obsessed back then and I needed a name that sounded similar to a japanese/anime character name. ;)

If you end up changing the wingtails' design (by the way I've seen the update in your art thread and will post feedback on it soon ;)), what will it mean for Dawn of a Wingtail? Will you edit the pages you've already done, re-draw them, etc.?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me

I probably redraw everything. Now that I have a new computer, which is also my drawing tablet now, I have to work differently than before and the old pages would look completely different from the newer ones. Although, the first page (title page) will stay the same. :)

How has your perception of your own wingtails changed since I started writing Far Away Home?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me
Post by: Sky on May 22, 2011, 08:04:52 AM
A lot! I thought they would be just another dinosaur type to go with, but after reading FAH, my views of wingtails have changed pretty much since then.  :wow

For example that their main/favourite food is fish wouldn't have come in my mind. I thought letting them eat green food would be enough. Or that they are somewhat more advanced in mind, a far more different society than regular dinosaurs or that they are experts in creating glass objects.

I probably won't see them as the wingtails I previously had in mind ever again but I guess they made a good development and have more depth now than before. :)
I'm a bit sad though that I couldn't pull off such things in the beginning myself.  :cry Feels like I'm not the creator of them anymore since you make a much better job developing them than me...

The next few weeks will be a pain. I have to study like an idiot for three exams I'm really bad at. I even skip dinner and stay much longer awake just to have more time to study and only less of the things I try to understand are actually going in my head. :neutral
I've probably taken the wrong school as most of the subjects are less or not in my interest at all and it plagues me a lot! Ad it's true that I'm too old for school anyways (I'm about 4 years older than most of my classmates). >_<

I also have a feeling that my classmates try to avoid and treat me less favourably... I try to be part of a discussion, they ignore me. I ask for help, they deny me. Seriously, my anger is stored and increases day by day since March.  :anger

And what if I don't pass my exams? Then I probably have to cancel 4 years of school and I don't think that I even get a job with that kind of life career...

I don't actually have a question (though I had been wondering the same thing Caustizer asked about); I just wanted to give you my deepest sympathies for what you're going through :( and offer you the very best of luck. (Perhaps you could explain your problems to your instructors and they could help you?) And I'm sure everyone on the forum will agree that if it would help for you to leave the GOF temporarily in order to have more time to study (getting enough food and sleep while preparing for such crucial exams is far more important), then by all means please do it.

Again, best of luck to you with everything, Sky. :)

@ Im little green glyder :J

I'd say digital. I mostly use Paint Tool Sai to sketch, lineart and color (and somtimes backgrounds). Then I use Photoshop to polish the picture and add a few effects. :)

@ Pangaea
Well, I could at least visit the GOF for about five minutes, just to check what's new. I might get important messages by the time.
But thank you for your concern~  :)

Hi Sky,
I got one question about photoshop. At the moment I am working on a land before time picture in which I might make a bit more use of the options provided by using different layers. However, while doing this I also noticed what seems to be a rather pointless obstacle to me. Whenever more than one layer is selected it seems to be impossible to use brush or pencil tools. No I got an own layer for a tree with its branches and stuff and would like to add a few leaves to it. However, I can only add leaves either onto the trunk and branches of the tree or onto the background leaving the tree itself uterly "untouched" by them. I know how to merge layers so I could merge the tree with the background to "solve" the issue, but actually I'd rather keep the tree a separate layer if that was possible.
So do you know if there is any possibility to use brush or pencil tools while more than one layer is selected? Your help would be greatly appreciated :yes

Malte

What version of Photoshop do you use? I'm using Photoshop 7.0 and it seems that I'm unable to select multiple layers (newer version might have that feature).

However, I can only add leaves either onto the trunk and branches of the tree
You might have the 'transparent pixels lock' enabled. It allows you to paint on an object on the layer you have currently selected without painting 'outside' from that object.
(http://p80.img-up.net/1ew4oqy.png) (http://a25.img-up.net/3drkwjx.png)

or you have a layer 'grouped' to that object:
It's similar to the transparent pixels lock, except you're painting outside the object too, which is not visible until you 'ungroup' that layer.

Hmm, that's new to me. Do you paint on the "Background" layer or a layer that is just 'below' the tree layer?
(http://v59.img-up.net/4ml7lbb.png) (http://r68.img-up.net/5gqmgd1.png)
Because the layers above are always 'untouched' from the layers below them. That's the only thing I can think of.

A few screenshots of your workspace might help me to understand better (if those problems aren't solved yet with these solutions). :)

Hi Sky,
I'm wondering if you gave anyone permission to make money with your artwork?
Today I accidentally stumbled across this offer (http://cgi.ebay.com/Land-Before-Time-Iron-T-Shirt-Transfer-3-/280648725267?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item870c51dfbc) at ebay. It is about an iron on version of one of your land before time pictures and by the looks of it somebody is making quite a business with your art. Does this person (the ebay name is pookies_attic) do so with your permission or is someone making money with your art without even informing you about it?
Title: Questions? Go ahead and ask me

I don't know for sure, but I highly doubt that Sky knows his artwork is being pirated for this purpose. :anger   Unfortunately he is away in the Phillipines and won't be back for another month, but I'm sure informing the seller that he is stealing someone else's artwork will at least force him to explain himself or take it down out of fear of being charged.

Well, that's some shocking news when you return from vacation. D:

No, he didn't ask nor did I give him permission to use my work. Something similar has happened before and with the same picture too! People think they can use any pictures they find on the internet and sell them. I don't have an ebay account to contact him or report that item. I really should consider making one in the future.
It would be really nice if someone could talk to him in a polite manner and take it down in the meanwhile. I would be really grateful :yes

Gah! It makes me really upset to see something like this! I should consider putting a larger watermark to my pictures. -_-

Petrie85:
Sue him? Well, I can't really do that. Sure, it's my work alright but the characters aren't mine. And I don't really know how to sue one anyways. :p
