Computer and Electronics / Netbooks
« on: January 27, 2010, 03:25:36 PM »
Netbooks - the really tiny computers that you can buy for next to nothing for your every day computer needs.

i picked one up recently, one of Asus's EeePC's and i love it!

i reckon these things are the future. they are really compact, light, and moderately powerful for their size. most of them are upgradable to 2gb of ram and windows 7.

depending on the model, they can come with up to around 7 hours of battery life! :o

mine is the one with the 3 cell battery, so i only get around 3-4 hours. no big deal.

they handle the basic tasks really well. email, web, office stuff etc. and some gaming is also possible. mine even plays WoW! lol

The verdict: if you are looking for a laptop for simple stuff and dont wanna lug around a mountain of computer, i highly recommend a netbook. prices are 280-400.

Computer and Electronics / TigerDirect is Such a Joke
« on: January 06, 2010, 02:48:38 AM »
my computer got a 6.2 / 10. little lower than i expected. was thinking more 7-7.5 or so.

my system is as follows: core 2 duo E7400, GTX260, 4GB DDR2-800 RAM.

its probably ranking stuff low based on how old the hardware is. for example, the i5/i7 machines score close to 10, according to the recommendations, but my graphics card is superior to all the ones it showed for me. whereas the core 2 duos are an old chip by today's standards. still great chips though.

dont let it worry you. its been designed that way to make you want to upgrade so you buy stuff. thats business :)

peace

Computer and Electronics / So I've installed Windows 7, but...
« on: November 22, 2009, 09:40:52 PM »
when you load the windows 7 disc, the install feature allows you to select a custom installation. do that, and on the following page, click advanced at the bottom, and delete any and all partitions on the hard drive.

this will wipe EVERYTHING on the computer, allowing a fresh install. back up anything from the windows.old folder first though, or you will lose it.

this works on the upgrade and retail discs. i did the exact same thing with my upgrade disc

Computer and Electronics / Going XP to 7? Please Read!
« on: October 27, 2009, 11:34:48 PM »
last night i upgraded to 7 using the Home Premium upgrade pack.

i only have a legal copy of winXP that i havent used in awhile. the Win7 disc didnt ask for any proof of owning a previous OS, it just installed normally, so i can confirm that you dont even need to own a previous version of Windows to even use the Win7 upgrade packs. quite cool.

i did a full reformat. but since i had the Win7 RC i didnt have a choice in that matter.

Win7 is the shizzl. buy it now :D

Computer and Electronics / Need To Wipe/Format Your Computer?
« on: October 18, 2009, 02:51:16 AM »
i wish manufacturers would include the discs with all computers they sell. restore partitions are kinda pointless when it probably costs them less to make the discs themselves.

and i wish retail PCs wouldnt come with an armada of useless software that any sensible person uninstalls immediately upon turning the PC on.

consumers should have the choice of what software they wanna add to their computer, not be forced to endure almost useless stuff that is "free" from the manufactures

The Fridge / That was scary!

Whoa.  That is scary.  But despite what others have said in this thread, you would NOT want to run in this situation.  If this guy was intent on harming you, running would be the second worst thing you could have done.  The worst thing you could do in this situation would be to turn around and say something like "shit man, back off!".  The trick is you do NOT want to let them know that you're aware of their presence and intentions.  That'll only make them panic and strike faster 'cuz they're pumped with adrenaline.  In order to survive this situation, you have to do something much scarier than just run.  You have to wait till they're about 1.5-2 feet away from you.  By that time you'll know they're after you and they intend to cause harm.  But at that same time, that's your last and only opportunity to defend yourself.

Unless the guy is totally crazy (which most people that commit these crimes aren't), he's gonna be nervous as hell 'cuz he's about to commit a crime.  He's pumped full of adrenaline which makes his responses faster, but he's also not thinking clearly.  You've gotta be faster than he is in this situation.  Just turn around as fast as you can and grab the wrist that has the knife and HOLD ON for dear life 'cuz if he gets that free you're practically dead already.  He'll most likely yell or make some other sort of distracting loud noise, but you can't let that make you lose your focus.  You've got to grab onto the knife with your other hand and try to get it from him.  If you can't get it within 1-2 seconds, punch him and try again.  If you still can't get it, punch him till he collapses.  By that time he probably won't be able to hold onto the knife anymore and you'll have it.  Now what you do next is up to you.  Personally I'd push his fatigued form over and stab him a couple of times in non-vital areas (shoulder, arms, etc.) 'cuz you don't want to kill the guy.  Of course you could just keep punching him, but that doesn't nearly cause as much pain as stabbing and the more pain he's in, the easier it is to get away.

Of course if he's on some sort of drugs that take pain away you're gonna have to either kill him or knock him out.  I'd try not to kill him personally but if he's super crazy and fighting back like hell just stab him where it'll cause the most damage.  But the #1 thing to remember is that you shouldn't try to run till he's incapacitated!  If he can still pursue, you'll most likely not win the second round.

The worst thing that can happen is to attack an innocent guy, but you won't get in much trouble for it.  It was his own damned fault.  You don't walk up to a single woman in the middle of the night with a knife in your hand!
i have to disagree with this.

engaging someone in physical combat when they have a weapon is normally a bad idea.

unless you have extensive martial arts training, the guy is most likely gonna be bigger and stronger than you.

if you were, to do as LBTLover says, and grab the hand thats holding the knife, he would most likely use his other, free hand to start hitting you, and after awhile, you would let go due to the pain, or whatever reason.

if this kind of situation comes up, where your life is directly threatened, the best idea is to scream and run. its unlikely someone who is intent on harming you will follow, as the noise you're making and getting away from him at the same, is going to discourage him from following you, out of fear he will be seen doing whatever hes trying to do.

these kind of people look for easy victims. if the guy thinks you will be difficult, he wont bother.

if you have a dog with you, dont stay in the area of the guy just to save the dog. your life is far more important than any animal's. i imagine alot of people do die this way, not leaving their animals behind when they are being attacked.

if you havent ever tried it, its always good to learn a martial art for self defense. it can take time, but it will increase your confidence and ability to defend yourself and be prepared for any situation that may come up. the world is full of psychos right now who will try to kill you for no reason at all.

i took Taekwondo for 4 years and had an excellent instructor.

tips i can give you, if you are directly threatened, is there are no rules in these situations. if the person has a weapon like a knife, always keep your eye on it, as the attacker will most likely only use the knife to inflict harm. if you are unable to get away, defend yourself as best you can until you can run. for example, if you get an opportunity to hit him "down there", do it. it will incapacitate him for several minutes, allowing you time to escape.

theres also something called your "personal space". think of it as a small force field around you, like 2-3 feet on all sides. this is your area, and anyone who enters it is invading your private area. no one has a right to get that close to you, as it severely compromises your ability to react and defend. anyone who enters this space without your permission is free game for retaliation.

and going back to what i said about victims. people like that will target people who dont carry themselves well, due to lack of self esteem or whatever. they see you a someone who wont put up a fight and will be easy to overcome.

the best way to carry yourself is to walk with your head looking forward, being focused and giving a vibe of confidence and strength. this works for men and women. if a potential attacker sees you are ready for anything that can happen, they will choose another target, as you will be too much effort for them.

anyway, i think ive gone on enough about this lol. fortunately nothing bad happened and you're ok.

just be alert, and stay vigilante :)

peace

what method did you use to learn everything you know about computers? you obviously know a great deal, to the point of a high-level IT technician.

stuff like hacking, coding, C++ etc. did it come easy, or did you have to work at it for several years?

Computer and Electronics / Thinking About Getting A MAC
« on: August 24, 2009, 11:13:02 PM »
macs are way too expensive for what you get. essentially you are buying a shiny computer with a different OS.

the mac OS is ok, but not something that i could live with on a day by day basis. its said to be alot more easier than a windows OS. that simply isnt the case. i find it incredibly hard to use; theres a reason Apple offers tons of training vids and stuff on it.

only get a mac if you will actually use what it can offer you. ie iLife stuff, no hassle with viruses etc. otherwise, its just a huge money sink that would be better put into a new windows PC.

also, did you know that Apple actually have it in their EULA that you are not allowed to install any mac OS onto a computer not made by Apple? yet they sell the OS as separate packages...

logic 1 - Apple 0

Computer and Electronics / Cable Vs DSL
« on: August 10, 2009, 06:39:13 AM »

If your cable was crashing it must've been your modem or your ISP (or your computer of course).  I run a server off a cable modem and I don't have any problems.  I need a stable connection and cable always delivers it.  I know what you mean though.  Back in Washington on Camano Island the only cable provider was Wave Broadband.  It totally sucked!  Dropped out like twice per day. :bang I got a new modem several times and it didn't do anything.  Comcast is great except for the bandwidth limit.  I'd get that if it's in your area.  DLS is sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. :p
yeah. i think it was my ISP.

its strange though, the actual internet would stay connected on the modem, but no DNS servers could be reached. this would happen quite alot too. and without DNS servers, you cant access anything on the internet  :bang

Computer and Electronics / Cable Vs DSL
« on: August 09, 2009, 05:33:14 AM »
so recently i decided to get rid of my cable internet as it was always crashing.

i have used both before with moderate success, and i have come across the following statements regarding the 2:

Cable: Pros - much faster than any DSL line. modem automatically configures itself. Con - shared connection; the more people on at once, the slower everything gets. kind of unstable; the connection can drop at random, and the speed is rarely consistent.

DSL: Pros - very stable and consistent connection. single line for each house; only you are using it. Con - typically alot slower than equivalent cable service. modem has to be manually configured. tied into phone system; if exchange box in your area dies, so does your net (not sure on this one).

those are my views on it. there are probably other points about both of them that ive missed out though. please post your comments and views on each.

CONCLUSION:

DSL wins. reason being, for me, is the connection is tons more stable. the bandwidth is more consistent, so the speed isnt going to fluctuate as much.

Cable is nice and fast, but for me, doesnt really have anything else going for it.  for most though ,the speed is what draws them into getting cable over DSL when they have the choice.

what do you reckon? :).
