General Land Before Time / How long is a "cold time"?

I've assume it's the equivalent to a year, but today Nick told me it's equivalent to 50 years??  :confused

General Land Before Time / Time of the Great Giving VHS question
« on: April 10, 2016, 01:49:53 AM »
I just discovered this on Youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnpAULXi6Po&nohtml5=False

To anyone who has a VHS copy of movie 3, does this happen at the end of your tape? I'm curious if it was a glitch on all VHS copies, or just certain ones?

General Land Before Time / Finally watching JOTB!
« on: February 12, 2016, 03:09:25 AM »
So back in 2011-12 I rewatched all of LBT, and watched 10-12 in full for the first time. I basically knew what would happen in 10, since I'd seen some of it before, and watched MArzgurl's reviews of the other two before seeing them. So this is the first really new LBT thing I've really felt I'm seeing in about 13 years!

So here, I'll take notes about things I find interesting about the new movie. Not a big review, since that's too time consuming, but just a place to jot down notes as I watch.

1. The beginning is a lot like LBT 12's with the Universal Logo...except it zooms into...northern Canada??
2. The new narrator is just...not John Ingle.  :cry
3. The transition to Littlefoot was sort of abrupt, but ok.
4. So nice seeing Cera, Ducky, Spike and Petrie reintroduced.
5. Wow, they mentioned Mama Longneck for the first time since LBT 10. Glad to see she hasn't been forgotten.
6. The flashbacks with Bron aren't exactly accurate, but it at least gives the idea.
7. Chomper and Ruby are back...and Chomper can only growl in english, not sharptooth.  Huh.
8. BTW, Littlefoot knows Ruby, so is this after the series? Guess I'll find out.
9. Oh god...Topsy's voice...you'll forever be missed, John Ingle.  :(petrie
10. Oh god...cheesy music starting!  :rolleyes
11. Littlefoot as Bieber?  :lol
12. "You will teach them to stay away from your rear end"
Seriously???  :lol
13. Handclaps in an LBT song?  :lol
14. Cera, did you learn anything from smashing your horn in LBT 10?
15. The noise when she shakes her head after hitting it...can anyone say "Klasky Csupo"? Lololol!!!
16. Aw, the song was pretty sweet.  :smile
17. Lol, the baby swimmer biting Petrie, lol
18. Holy crap, was Petrie almost about to say he was their adopteded...oh wait, no, he was talking about Spike, not Ducky. Why was he so shy to say he was Spike's friend?  :! It would have been funnier if he has said "and me your sister's...uh, um...me just Petrie."
19. Oh god...Grandpa Longneck, who did they get to voice you?  R.I.P., Kenneth Mars. You'll always be Grandpa Longneck, no matter how many replacements he gets.  :cry
20. BTW, Grandma Longneck sounds different, too. I'll have to check the credits.
21. CGI Waterfall.
22. Oh...the herd all makes it there safely, just not Bron. I see.
23. Um...does Grandpa Longneck have longer eyelashes suddenly?  :lol
24. WILD ARMS!!!!  :lol  :lol  :lol  :lol
25. Oh man, this guy is too hilarious!  :smile But owch, that pinching looked painful!
26. Feather headed sharptooth? Huh.
27. Their stare at Wild Arms...gonna be a really good caption.  :smile
28. Huh, where are Chomper and Ruby? They sort of disapeared.
29. It's nice that Littlefoot isn't asking his friends to risk their lives to help him. Back in LBT 4, it was sort of implied that he was gonna make them do that if Ali hadn't said they should go alone.
30. Um...is he actually in the Mysterious Beyond? Not much transition.
31. *sigh*...the gang this site is named after, back on another adventure after all these years!  :smile (Although it barely qualifies as the Mysterious Beyond.)
32. OK, now it sort of qualifies.
33. The first clip we've already seen so far. Also, what's the "long valley"?
34. Horrible CGI tree.
35. Once again, Cera wasn't at the back of the line as they crossed the log.
36. "Everything looks scary to you"  lol
37. They called stinkweed by it's actual name, ironically enough.  :idea
38. Clip #2 that we've seen...the "hot and stinky" song...and boy, does it stink.
39. Those are some uncanny-looking sharpteeth.
40. The sharpteeth actually heard Petrie?
41. Holy crap, a mammal.
42. Oh god, saying the song title...please tell me there isn't going to be a reprise...  :anger
43. Spike's eating really causing a problem for once. And causing Littlefoot to fall in.
44. Geez, the gang is gonna risk getting eaten just for a swim?
45. They're  JUST noticing the stinkweed is washing off?? The writers are really putting the willing suspension of disbelief on me here.
46. I'm pleased to hear the music from the shark scene in movie 5 reused!
47. Horrible CGI falling rocks.
48. Yikes...that looks tough to climb up. Thankfully Ducky and Petrie didn't have to. (BTW, it looks like the cliff Littlefoot was climbing after the fight with Cera in the original!)
49. Horrible CGI cliff.
50. Tripping Sharpteeth, again.
51. More horrible CGI rocks, but made up for by Cera pushing them onto the Sharptooth!  :smile
52. And he just gives up and walks away. A day in the life of a sequel sharptooth. Oh well.
53. Clip #3. I gotta say, so far, this movie has been pretty good..it's stuck to a good story without wasting much time on stuff. I wonder if Etta will show up soon. Given her significance, I'm sure she will, considering we're over a half-hour in.
54. Lovely shot of the valley. Looks almost mirrored from the original film.
55. Chomper and Ruby still exist in this film, thankfully.
56. Ugh, the grandparents' voices.
57. The Mysterious Beyond is well-drawn here, too.
58. Wait, sickness among the gang? That's new.
59. Aw, the classic Great Valley Theme...nope, gotta save up the waterworks in case something happens that really makes me cry.
60. Clip #4. Great to see Mama Swimmer and Mama Flyer again, but where's Tria? Anyways, nice to see this clip again.

That's all for tonight. I'll finish watching the movie and giving my thoughts on it tommorow!

General Land Before Time / Biggest earthquake in the films?
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:10:32 PM »
Of the earthquakes featured in the movies, which one do you think was the biggest? The one in the original, the one in LBT 9, or the one in the flashback in LBT 10?

Sorry if this is an irrelevant topic, I just felt I had to make it after a post that's been bothering me.  :neutral

Character Discussion / Etta
« on: January 23, 2016, 01:20:57 AM »
So since no one made a topic about her yet, I thought I'd start it. :smile

What do you think of her so far? She hasn't made a very good impression on me so far. It's not that Reba Macantire is a bad voice actor, but that's all I hear when I hear Etta's voice. I don't really hear enough of a character. A big part is because the design really clashes with Reba's voice.

And that's another problem...I don't like her design a lot. The fact that she's all one color would be OK if she was maybe a more subtle color, but the fact that she's bright yellow makes her stick out like a sore thumb. Between that and the voice-clashing-with-appearence-thing, I really don't find her that appealing. Not that she seems to be annoying, or anything, I mean, I'm sure she's going to be really well-written. But so far I'm not really really a huge fan.

I do want to see more of this Wild-Arms character, though. Just from what I've seen of him on the cover makes me like him!  :smile

LBT Fanfiction / My supposed LBT film behind the scenes story!
« on: January 20, 2016, 09:45:25 PM »
OK, so this probably didn't happen and is just my own work, but it's pretty funny and what I like to think happened!  :lol

Here goes!

Jeff Bennet has voiced the character of Petrie for 13 LBT films, but what fans aren't aware of is that he's been forced to do a certain voice for the character for years now!

It started in 1994 when recording for voice overs of the third film began. The executives told Bennet something along the lines of "Nah, we're getting sick of that voice; it sounds too old for a character who is much younger. Try making him sound younger for a change, sir." in regards to the character of Petrie. Bennett refused, since he had worked hard to do a perfect imitation of Will Ryan's voice of Petrie, which was how the character was supposed to sound. He talked to director Roy Allan Smith about it, who agreed, but figured maybe trying a mix of using a high and low voice could work. They proceeded to do so, and neither were happy with the result. By the time recording proceeded for the next film, Bennet had returned to using the voice he used for Petrie in the second film.

This changed in 1996 when recording for the dialogue of the fifth film began. The new director, Charles Grovsner, agreed with the executives that Bennett should change his voice. Benett agreed, on the condition that he could also record Petrie's dialogue in the voice he preferred---for his own personal viewing of the film. Universal agreed, and for every sequel since, Bennet has twice recorded Petrie's dialogue---the higher voice always being the one used in the final product.

Bennett has expressed frustration with how he has been made to voice Petrie, saying it hurts his throat. Much of the cast and crew have also agreed they prefer his lower voice, saying his singing sounds much better. Bennet has tried to get someone to dub his singing, but Universal has refused, saying Bennett succeeds in making the character sound cute. Bennet's frustration has led to him consider quiting voicing the character several times, but he has stayed in hopes that he will be able to release Petrie's dialogue---in his own words---"the way it's supposed to sound".

General Land Before Time / Will LBT continue after JOTB?
« on: January 12, 2016, 07:52:30 PM »
I don't think anyone has made a topic for this but is LBT going to keep going after JOTB?

A large part of me wants it to, to see where the writers go and if they can do better than in some of the past sequels. Oh, and hopefully more Marzgurl reviews! (She did say she'd review everything LBT universal gave if it was the last thing she did!  :lol )

On the other hand, the existence of this movie could serve simply to give the series the finale WOF failed to be.

But who knows? It's early, and considering the sequels are released a year apart, it'll probably be awhile before we hear.

1988 Theatrical Release / Would you call this movie "beautiful"?
« on: January 11, 2016, 03:39:59 PM »
I did, but someone else was like "what are you talking about? It's only 38% beautiful". That made me a little frustrated, as if I'm not able to appreciate dark stuff. Sure, the movie is depressing, but I'm not going to lie that it has a dark beauty to it.

1988 Theatrical Release / How old is Spike, exactly?
« on: January 10, 2016, 02:36:10 PM »
People seem to take that hatching scene as canon.

Quote
8. Spike is implied to have a mental disability, which is supported by Cera's deleted comment. But is it exclusive to Spiketails within the first movie's canon? He is, after all, only a baby.

But he's not.

Quote
I noticed that. I guessed they did that since Spike may not have been able to keep up with the large Littlefoot and Cera, and was to big to ride on one of their backs like Ducky and Petrie could do, so they sorta did a poof he's their size.

Hold on: isn't the movie supposed to be about accepting differences? Obviously the "large" Littlefoot and Cera would have been forced to slow down. That would explain Cera's frustration in the berry scene.

Quote
Though they should have come up with a better solution. Maybe something like finding him sorta like Ducky found Littlefoot, and they found Petrie.

Why this was never the solution is a mystery that for the life of me, I don't think I'll ever be able to solve. Despite their differences, the gang is all supposed to be the same age, so why do they have to magically make Spike into that? There's a thousand different ways they could have found him, and yet they choose the oddest possible one?

Quote
Did you realize how Spike's size multiplied in the first few seconds after his birth?

No one on here really does, from what I can tell.

Quote
I think that at the end of his hatching scene he ended up four or five times (possibly more) the size he must have had the moment of the hatching.

Again, it's weird how so many fans don't seem to realize this.

Quote
Perhaps his inability to talk was the only real indication for his being much younger than the others in the original movie

Quote
Spike's size tripled (or more) in the first moments after he hatched.

The fact is, he became the age the rest is, but no one seems to understand that.

Land Before Time TV Series (2007) / What makes a better final episode?
« on: January 09, 2016, 10:37:40 PM »
I think TTEOTS is the last one aired but TGEA is the official last one (episodes are aired out of order sometimes), but some people here think otherwise. But which one do you think made the better finale?

I choose The Great Egg Adventure, since it was interesting seeing the bullies return and the fact that three of the main cast were missing makes it a interesting and unique expierience.

General Land Before Time / Roy Allan Smith's sequels
« on: November 15, 2015, 02:01:14 AM »
I was recently responding to some stuff about the apparent differences between RAS and Grovsner's style. I feel this may be something we've given perhaps a little too much thought to.

Why? There really isn't a ton of difference. If you don't think I'm right, let's look at it.

Animation: movies 2-4 definitely use much more subtle color tones, but after movie 6, the animation isn't even the same as it was during movies 2-4.

Writing: The writing haven't changed a ton in quality; rather, throughout it's had it's ups and downs. John Loy, who wrote the first two sequels, has written many since. Dev Ross, who was involved in the writing of the first three, admitedly did leave, although she did return for movie 9.

Voice Acting: Admitedly, it's a tad different. Littlefoot starts sounding more young and cheerful around movie 6, Petrie's voice starts sounding higher, Cera sounds a little older. But that's mostly it. Ducy is relatively the same in 5 and 6 (Aria's voice matured by movie 7), and none of the adult dinosaurs sound very different (even Grandma Longneck, who got a new VA in movie 5 since her original one passed away, sounds mostly the same).

Songwriting: It's true the early sequels couldn't seem to make up their mind about who to use as writers, but for all we know, RAS could have hired Michelle and Amanda back for movie 5 himself since he was involved.

Characterization: I don't see a ton of change in the characterization either. Cera is a little more agressive, although that might be because her voice actor doesn't sound as young. Topsy is often a nicer character, although that could be chalked up to character development he likely had after the events of the third movie. Overall, I don't see a ton of change here.

Background Music: Grovsner continued to keep Horner's old score notably until movie 10, and a lot of Michael Taver's music from the first three sequels continues to be re-used.

All in all, I think RAS and Grovsner are less different than we think. The comparision is admittedly unfair, as Grovsner has four times the amount of sequels that RAS does. However, from what we do have that RAS did, it doesn't seem too different from Grovsner's style to me. At least, not as jarringly different as Bluth's is by comparision.
