Title: GOF Sing-along: If We Hold On Together
Post by: Mumbling on June 27, 2019, 12:49:52 PM
Hi everyone!  :rainbowwave

Remember the singing projects (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=1417.0)? The banners you'll see in some people's avatars? Here's a small reboot! In honor of making a fully GOF-voiced Land Before Time movie, I thought it would also be a good idea to put voice-overs instead of Diana Ross' song during the credits.

The premise is very simple: if you have a microphone of any kind and want to join - you can! You'll need a few more things to send me a recording:
- A program in which you can record your voice. This can be any program of your choice, so long as it can create mp3 or wav files. A good free option is Audacity (https://www.audacityteam.org/download/).
- Earphones to listen to the song (so that we won't hear an echo of it in your recording).
- Quiet time at home to record!

Are you in? You can find the lyrics here (https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/dianaross/ifweholdontogether.html). Attached to this post you'll find Action9000's excellent rendition of the song without any vocals. Please sing along to that song, since the original song has a slightly different timing from the rendition.

I'll be updating this post with the people who want to join! Feel free to ask if you have any questions. I want at least 5 voices - but the more the merrier! :)

Like I said before, I could try putting my Petrie singing voice into this, but I probably won't get an opportunity until either tomorrow or later. My little brother's high school graduation is today, and I intend to be there to see him do it. :)petrie

That would be absolutely awesome, Diddy! If we hold on together is particularly tricky because it has many low and high notes, but I hope you can make it work! And of course, no rush, enjoy your brother's graduation :)

I will! I hope it'll be just as special as my own graduation eight years ago! My God, has it been that long?

In fact, I had a dream last night about the four (Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky and Petrie) singing the song during a colorful sunset. It took place just one day after the events of the movie, and they briefly discuss their new friendship and their troubled pasts before Petrie decides to try singing for the first time, and he breaks into the song we all know and love, before the others eventually join in and they become a foursome, with Ducky joining him next, before Littlefoot and Cera join in for the first chorus. It was one of the cutest, tearful dreams I have had in recent memory.

I see my name has already been thrown on the list from the chat. Well you already know that I just sent out a preliminary showcase for you to laugh at  :PCera
I'll see if I can find another opportunity to do a better recording.

I''ll try to get my singing recorded if at some point my brother leaves the room for maybe 15 minutes or so. :P

BTW, his graduation last night was just wonderful! He'll be off to college at UB before the end of August, and he'll be dorming there, which means I get the room to myself, and therefore more recording opportunity time! :P :)petrie

Welp, my brother went to a friend's graduation party, and that provided me with the perfect opportunity to get my recording done! :)petrie And what I said about singing in my Petrie voice, I'm true to my word. I didn't have the heart to break out of character! :smile

Thanks, Petrie Diddy! I don't know how you do it, hitting all those high notes in Petrie's voice. Sounding really good so far, guys!

Hey. If some of you wonder. I was just Nimrod before. I sadly forgot my Password and my old Email is deleted so I had to create a new account.^^

I would gladly be participating in the Project tho. :)

Also, we don't have to try to do an impression of one of the characters...do we?  :lol

I wouldn't say we necessarily have to. I mean, I personally think having the characters singing it is cute, but we're leaving that optional for now. I did a Petrie impression that ended up quite good, but natural voices would be okay, too. :)petrie

Don't worry I feel the same haha. I've already sent in a second recording because I wasn't happy with the first. Can't say I'm fully satisfied but I don't think I can improve enough in the short term anyways.

I'm sure you sound great though!  :smile

Mumbling, I must say this is a very successful and influential Gang of Five Singing Project you've got running. It seems like people who weren't active for months or maybe years have suddenly returned seemingly to participate in this collective.
:olittlefoot

I was also interested in Tim's custom arrangement of If We Hold On Together, so I downloaded and gave it a listen. Personally, it's not my cup of tea. Here's why. Sometimes simplicity is the best. There were a bit too many instruments and I felt the emotion of the song washed out a bit and not as effective. To best illustrate my point, here's a link to my favorite instrumental (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=z31rL7Uk5r8) version of the song. It was overall perfectly paced in my opinion, the piano was the star, and it was complimented nicely by only a few select instruments. It really captured the essence that the song should convey, and that what mainly sold me there. But still, it was pretty amazing to have someone compose an entirely different instrumental with a computer program. It does remind me of an orchestra, I'll give you that. Anyway, I wrote this mostly to voice the thought that has been swirling in my head for awhile, rather than actually directly critisize Tim's composition. But in all seriousness, this is likely the best project done in a while I've noticed. How often do you see people on the internet uniting like this? :D

To be fair, the singing projects preceded even my time here on the GoF. They were very successful back then as well, completely organized by Tim who wrote both the music and did the mixing. I'm just making use of that known popularity and even his arrangement, and it still seems to be a success! As to old members returning, that is just me pestering them until they give in ;)

Just wondering, do you have any thoughts/comments about the second paragraph I wrote in my previous post? Do you agree or disagree with my stance on the custom arrangement?

Also, I couldn't help but notice that there was around 64 downloads for the instrumental? Like wow, I swear, yesterday I thought there were only 28 downloads in total. Or maybe my memory is clogged? Haha, have you been pestering people to download the custom arrangement too? :lol

No real thoughts on the subject, no. My interest in and knowledge of music is... limited, so I feel like I wouldn't be the right person to make any comment on that :P

Now that is odd! I indeed remember seeing 29 yesterday. Who has been spamming that download button? Hahaha! But I have been telling people to download the custom arrangement, since the timing is slightly different to the original.

No real thoughts on the subject, no. My interest in and knowledge of music is... limited, so I feel like I wouldn't be the right person to make any comment on that :P

Eh...I don't think I have any knowledge on the intricacies of music, but you can notice things that bother or appeal to you just by listening attentively to the song, multiple times maybe, and compare it to different versions of it to get the gist of it. Many variables can affect your overall experience on what you listen to, such as quality, vocals, instruments, pacing, tone, and whatnot. And depending on how those elements are executed, it could lead to a wonderful, unsatisfactory, or disasterous outcome.

So, when I listened to Tim's composition, it was very underwhelming by itself, and especially when I compare it to the instrumental I've been listening to for awhile. So yeah, I have already expressed the reasons why I felt that way in my initial post, so no need to repeat it here. Once again, I'm no expert on music and everything I've said here is my opinion. This conversation turned out to be longer than I previously thought, hehe. :)

Edit: I did another listen of the song, turns out it's not underwhelming, but a bit of the opposite problem actually. Like I said already with the instruments, too much going on at once. But despite that, I actually really liked it. I now felt the emotion that was seemingly lacking the first time around. Hmm. So yeah, probably because I didn't listen to it at a high enough volume. Now I could hear everything much more clearly. But everything else I said still stands, and it's still not my cup of tea.

And yep, the old adage is true that the more you listen to something, the more you grow to like it.

Because it's all accompaniment I get that it's hard to line up.  My first run was off.  I had to listen to the original song to get an idea for the song again, and I was able to do it the second time.

Can't say I agree, given I had no trouble listening to this, or mixing my own recording of the song.  I think Tim did fine, given he had to do it by ear to get it right.  I get not everyone will agree but its totally usable for what we're doing here as a community.  :yes

I agree, I think Tim’s arrangement was very beautiful! I didn’t have any trouble recording with it, but I can understand it can be harder for others. If you ever need help with the music, let me know! I’ve developed my ear over the years of being a vocalist, so I can help you match up to the right timing!  :yum

I must admit, my initial evaluation of Tim's composition was a bit rash and abrupt, so it probably affected the way I first viewed it. Also, combined with the fact that I had a bit of favoritism for another instrumental I loved very much made me judge it more as a comparison rather than a standalone piece. But with all that said, I really did enjoy listening to it. ^_^

So yeah, let it be a lesson to everyone to keep your bias in check and have an objective mind when judging basically anything the first time around. :yes

I managed to dig my old Blue Snowball microphone out and it still works so I don't mind giving it a shot since its quality is miles above my desktop mic.

My singing voice is not the best, but I hope it'll suffice. I'll probably record tomorrow since it's dead at night where I am now.

Hi everyone!

It's been a couple of months, but I've been feeling project-y this weekend and I don't think there will be any more submissions... So without further ado, I present to you: If We Hold On Together, 2020 edition! OK, all of you sang it back in 2019, but this year sounds nicer ;)

Link to the song in .wav format on Google Drive (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WIov_9_XfoeEY83C66dKL-1hwKtHoIFI/view?usp=sharing)

I have also attached the song in .mp3 format to this post.

We had 10 vocalists this time around:
@Belmont2500
@bestariana1girl
@DarkWolf91
@DiddyKF1
@Flathead770
@LeventeII
@Mumbling
@Nimrod
@OwlsCantRead
@Petrie

Thanks to all of you for your contributions! I hope you can hear yourself in the song, as there were many voices to play around with.

As a token for your contribution, please feel free to add the following banner to your signature.

I was exhausted earlier and downloaded the .wav instead of the .mp3 because I was too tired to log in via mobile. Really should have expected that file size difference. :opetrie

But I really like the how the end result sounds, Mumbling! Of everyone, I was able to make out my own voice, as well as Diddy's (because he literally sang in a Petrie tenor), but I'm abashed to admit that I have trouble putting my finger on whose voice was used at which specific lyric when it came to everyone else, ended up abit murky for me because I never really heard many of you folks sing before. Y'all still sang great, though. :p

Still, the song was mixed well! This is a great cover of If We Hold On Together, amazing job everyone! :duckyhappy
