1988 Theatrical Release / Re: Outcut land before time scenes
« on: November 20, 2024, 03:58:26 AM »
Mo-o-o-o is super duper excited! Wow! Certainly did not expect this, but it's a very welcome surprise. :feelsgoodman :Mo

Nice to meet you, Stu Krieger. :duckyOK
I'm happy to know that you found our little niche community and that you are touched by our continued love for the movie. Thank you as well for your contributions to create the movie that have made the childhoods of mine and other people here.

Anyway, since this is an AMA, it is only appropriate that I ask you some questions that I am curious about. May add some more later on.

1. Not exactly related to the original movie itself, but are you still in touch with other writers or anyone else who had contributed to the first Land Before Time movie?

2. Based on the deleted scenes, the movie was supposed to have more gruesome/frightening scenes, especially ones related to Sharptooth and his attack. My question is, was the pressure to keep adherence to a "G" rated movie standard the main reason why the scenes had to be dialed down a bit? Were you guys considering at one point to make the movie "PG" in favor of keeping the movie's integrity intact? Correct me if I'm wrong, but Universal was the main culprit behind the decisions that the team had to make regarding the scenes that were deleted? (Hopefully this isn't too much for your NDA)

3...

1. Yes! Although I never even met the previous credited writers on LBT, I had a long working relationship across multiple projects with both Steven Spielberg and Don Bluth, who I still speak to today. I also recently reconnected with John Pomeroy, a lead animator and producer on the film. We're all pretty proud of how the movie has lived on.

2. Here's the truth: After years of being asked about the fabled "more violent" cut of the movie, I recently went back into my archives and uncovered what is perhaps the earliest cut of the movie in existence. It's so early, in fact, that some scenes aren't fully animated yet. I can now reveal....

Though there are a few extra moments the Sharptooth fight (some shots are held for slightly longer, there's a brief scream from Littlefoot's Mom that's slightly different to the theatrical release, etc), there are no violent deleted scenes! In fact, the early cut of the movie was shorter than the theatrical release.

So this feels appropriate to crosspost here. If I'm understanding him properly, the original cut isn't that different from the theatrical version?

Damn, they washed the hell out of that thumbnail. I wonder if they copied attributes from an older project and forgot to toggle the brightness/color grade off. Though whatever they ported it from would need to be, like, zoom footage to ever justify cranking the lumetri like that. Whoever maintains the LBT YouTube is my favorite employee at Universal

Hi Stu! Thank you so much for having an AMA for us :D

Were there any deleted characters/scenes from older drafts of the script you were bummed got left on the cutting room floor?

What do you think of DIsneyland ticket prices? Do you think it's worthpaying the expensive prices to enjoy "The Magic"?

Following up on Enchanted's question, what do you think about the company Disney as a whole?

To reply to both at once, I don't really have strong feelings on Disney, I'm not a fan of how litigious they are, and I think they've caused irreparable harm to copyright and public domain law in this country. They have many wonderful films under their belt and they've advanced animation in many ways, but they've also screwed over smaller studios who work with them, bought out competitors, shut down competing studios through legal but unethical practices, and vastly inflate the cost of everything at Disneyland to the point that I couldn't afford anything the one time I went there (freshman year of high school as part of a choir competition, so I didn't pay for a ticket. Even then, the lines were so long I couldn't go on most rides between performances and found myself just doing the Explorer Canoes over and over again. The one concession I bought, a large pineapple smoothie, was hollowed out so I barely got any smoothie despite the cup being massive.)

Do you blame Kids Media for Pirates still be thought of as Lovers of the 7 Seas, wear Skull and Cossbone Hats and look for Tresure with an X that marks the spot?

Yes, but only because Treasure Island is kid's media, that book basically codified "Age of Sailing pirates" in popular culture and we never escaped. Since then, even adult media like Black Sails have maintained the aesthetic and I can't even blame them, it's an incredible genre and I love writing in it myself from time to time. Not many authors can singlehandedly invent a new genre like that, Robert Louis Stevenson can count himself among a very lofty pedigree!

Have you ever watched Charlie:All dogs go to heaven?

Yeah of course! Wonderful movie, I admit I've only seen it once because it makes me really sad (I don't do great with dead pets even when they're given as much carefulness and gravitas as they are in that film) but it was a very impactful film that left its mark on me and I don't regret seeing it.

Have you seen the movie Hairspray (2007)?
If so what is your opinion?

This one I've been meaning to, I've only ever heard the title song which gets stuck in my head every few years. Would you recommend it?
