I've done the math, and the whole of European Union countries accounts for a total of 87 gold medals, 101 silver, and 92 bronze, China got 51 gold, 21 silver and 28 bronze, the US got 36 gold, 38 silver, 36 bronze, and Russia got 23 gold, 21 silver and 28 bronze. So the EU beats them all by a long run =P

Oh well, congratulations EU.
But I for one, am quite dissapointed on the Swedish OS team.
This OS's Sweden's worst trough modern time.  :slap
Can just hope for the better in London.
And I know our chanses are better in Winter OS!  :wow

By the way, Usain Bolt... Oh my god!
Do well. Live well. And dress very well.

I'm also a bit disappointed with the Portuguese committee, although it was our best performance ever, I think we could've brought a lot more medals, let's see what happends in London

Well, the European Union isn't just one country; it is a collection of countries. So it gets the advantage of getting the medals of each country that makes it up.

Well, I guess you can see it that way.  Or you can see it by country.  You're kind of doing an apples to oranges comparison.

If the EU was a real country then yeah, it'd be an apples to apples comparison.

How about we compare NAFTA or CAFTA to the EU? Or how about the EU to potential FTAA nations?

And in case you are wondering, the FTAA stands for Free Trade Agreement of the Americas... it isn't a reality yet, but it may be one day.

You also can compare EU to CIS ("Commonwealth of Independent States", including Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and some other countries).

I agree that it doesn't make much sense to talk of the EU like it was one single participant. One might just as well add the sums of distances covered by ten people leaping forward and then claim them to have jumped farther than the single one who leaped farther than each of the ten.

I don't think the topic was serious from the beginning. :)

Yes and no. I'm really glad that the EU exists and ensures that the wars of the past shall not be resumed in the EU part of Europe. However, so far the EU is neither melting pot nor salad bowl. In any case I don't think getting advantages at the counting of olympic medals was the main idea of the founders of the EU.
Right now the process is at stake as Europeans don't seem to be able to agree on one constitution. Moreover I also see why some people see that it is mainly an economic union of little benefit to the common people. The EU is a grand idea same as the UNO, but that idea is still far from being truly realized.
