Silver Screen / Barbenheimer
« on: July 21, 2023, 07:47:27 PM »
Oppenheimer and Barbie come out today, is anyone planning on seeing either film?

Thanks to the "Barbenheimer" meme of seeing both films back-to-back, my boyfriend and I bought tickets for last night, and it's honestly a pretty transcendent experience to watch them in rapid sequence, haha.

Oppenheimer is very good in a number of ways, excellent cinematography and acting performances, I found the pacing and several elements of the plot to be oddly written, but most of those can be excused because they were all tied to real-life events and I'd prefer a movie maintain historical continuity over making stuff up or significantly altering the timeline for dramatic effect.

Barbie exceeded my expectations on pretty much every front, I knew it was hoping to be more than a girl's movie for selling toys, and it succeeded thanks to its subversive plot, great jokes and very careful balancing of tone and message. Every actor did great, with Ryan Gosling's performance as Ken being a standout role that I didn't see coming. Overall it's visually and narratively very entertaining, and I recommend it even to people who didn't think they'd like a Barbie film.

If you decide to make it a double feature night, I highly recommend watching Oppenheimer first and Barbie second, we were pretty pleased with that viewing order, but if you get tickets for the reverse I'd be very interested to hear how that goes. We opted for a saccharine palette cleanser to end the night, and it definitely felt like the right call.

Silver Screen / 12 Angry Men
« on: July 21, 2023, 05:45:25 PM »
Anyone seen this film? It's one of my favorites, I highly recommend it if you've never seen it. I know it's black-and-white and only stars a dozen dudes in a single room for 90 minutes, but that's partially why it's so incredible how riveting and intense the storyline gets

I was wondering if anyone in here remembers this old animation from around the same time as LBT? An animated retelling of a children’s book, it came bundled with The Rainbow Fish which was written by the same guy, and features the same “animal with glowing body parts that gets them into adventure” motif.

I remember when I was young thinking it was part of the LBT franchise, since it was similarly animated and even came with a campy song, haha. But even now that I’m older and wiser, I think it was a pretty cute little video that’s worth a short watch, especially for fans of LBT

Gamers Zone / Planetside 2 Breaks World Record
« on: November 06, 2022, 04:20:11 AM »
Today Planetside 2 broke the world record for "Most Players in a Single Battle", with 2141 players battling it out across the same desert continent.

I was one of them, and wrote a recap of the record-breaking event if anyone wants to read it! :D It's honestly incredible that technology has progressed to the fact that twelve-hundred players can connect to a single server and there's not even particularly-bad lag or framerate issues. Makes me excited what sort of massively-multiplayer shooters we may be seeing in the future!

Gamers Zone / Elden Ring
« on: March 09, 2022, 03:01:52 PM »
Elden Ring dropped recently and I can't stop playing it. I've never touched a Dark Souls-style game before, so I was really trepidatious about the fabled difficulty levels, but the difficulty is honestly really fair. The game wants you to learn how each enemy works, and it harshly punishes mistakes, but you KNOW what mistake you made and get better every time. It's so great when you finally beat a boss after dying to him over and over, but getting a little better each time.

Anyone else playing this game?

General Land Before Time / A microphone with pole in LBT 4?
« on: April 17, 2021, 08:58:11 PM »
On two different websites I'm seeing a reference to a "microphone with a pole" that supposedly appear in a shot of "It Takes All Sorts" from LBT 4.

Quote from: TV Tropes
Visible Boom Mic: In the fourth film there is a visible microphone on a pole when Cera and Ali sing in the song, "It Takes All Sorts."

Quote from: Land Before Time wiki
In "It Takes All Sorts", a microphone with a pole is shown in one shot, despite the fact that this film is just animated. This might have been an inside joke with an animators.

Well I've reviewed that song and I can't see one anywhere! Am I blind, or are both websites wrong? Or maybe it only appears in older edition of the film? (I watched the free online version on Amazon Prime video)

Member Recommendations / My card game won $3000!
« on: March 19, 2021, 09:35:54 PM »
So I'm super excited, I entered a board game development contest sponsored by Ford Motor Company. The prompt was "in order to test self-driving car AI, we need a board game for 2 or more players that involves carrying conversations on topics that we can alter or change to be anything we want."

Well, I came up with an idea, commisssioned some card artwork...and won! The three winners each earned three-thousand dollars, and since the winners were required to enter their work into the public domain, my game is free to download here: https://aabicus.com/the-just-us-league/

The Just Us League is a lighthearted card game where players assume the roles of underwhelming superheroes with less-than-useful weapons, each vying for the President’s permission to save the world from the current wacky catastrophe. The characters and conflicts are generated via drawing from decks every round, so you'll never play the same exact scenario twice. If you're into card games or superheroes, I recommend you check it out! :D

General Land Before Time / Bramble Maze from The LBT Activity Center
« on: March 16, 2021, 01:42:20 PM »
Anyone remember this mini-game from an old Land Before Time game back in the 90s?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9D-p9Jzfic

I'd played several different LBT games in my youth, but this one mini-game really stood out in my memory. It's a fully-rendered 3-D maze (might be Doom/Wolfenstein engine? Not 100% sure but the camera swivel/wall angles look familiar) with surprisingly varied environments (my favorite was the underwater section). You play as Cera tasked with retrieving 5 different items from within the maze, and there's some great ambient music that plays while you travel.

Until it doesn't. Sometimes as you hike through the maze, you'll hear a snarl and the music will stop. This is a warning to turn around immediately, because if you continue forward, you'll get one more warning growl, and then a T-Rex bursts through the wall in front of you and you drop all your items. I remember being so terrified of this part of the mini-game, and I suspect it's the main reason I still remember it so well decades later.

Just wanted to see if anyone else has memories of this particular mini-game. And if not, you should watch the above-linked video and see how surprisingly-advanced it was for a single activity in a largely promotional stocking-stuffer title!

The Written Word / The Approaching Light
« on: March 13, 2019, 05:19:31 AM »
Hi everyone! I've written 10 Darwin's Soldiers stories and 38 Into the Black stories, but I've never written a story for Insane Cafe, the third RP series I participate in...until now!

This story is completely isolated from the Insane Cafe plot, I don't think you'll need any understanding of the RPs in order to read this, other than that my two main characters, Aimee and Shakila, recently emerged from a wormhole missing their short-term memory, and are now recovering on a massive starcraft called the Spire of Winter. (Aimee is a fox with robotic arms, Shakila is a black cat, both were created and originally owned by MrDrake)

I got permission from nick22, GM of Insane Cafe, to write this. Also I want to reiterate: this story is not in any way canon to the Darwin's Soldiers or Into the Black universes. Enjoy!

The vulpine felt a heavy hammering in her head. It was matched with a low humming somewhere to her left. "Wha?" she muttered. She crawled out of her seat. She was in some sort of very small, heavily-damaged spaceship, and her friend was with her. "Shakila," Aimee shook her friend awake. "Where are we?"

"I...don't know," the black cat groaned, nursing a headache Aimee suspected was similar to her own. "I can’t remember...anything..."

Aimee nodded. "This shuttlecraft is shot to hell. How did we get here?" She pressed several buttons on the control panel and the cockpit windshield untinted, letting them see the Spire outside. And the Spire could see them.

‘Unidentified shuttlecraft, this is the RIMCS Spire of Winter.’ A commanding voice echoed through their tiny cockpit. ‘Identify yourselves or be destroyed.’

Aimee felt her blood run cold. "How do we reply?" Shakila asked hurriedly, as her friend started operating the controls.

“One sec!” Aimee snapped, sending a hailing frequency to the larger ship. Or at least trying; the button didn’t seem to be responding. “Comms are down. We need to alert them some other way!” She noticed Shakila try a button that turned off the hallway lights. "Hey, don't go pressing stuff!" Aimee snapped. "What if you shoot missiles at them?"

"Well, if we do nothing they're gonna shoot missiles at us!" Shakila snapped back. Suddenly, as if on cue, Aimee saw the Spire’s point-defense lasers activate. Two deadly beams of light sliced the shuttlecraft to ribbons, barely missing the two girls. With a pair of shrill screams, the two embraced in terror as their fiery wreck plummeted into the ocean--

“--Augh!” Aimee awoke in a cold sweat, abruptly sitting upright in bed.

“Aimee, what is it?” her bunkmate, Shakila, sat up from the other bed. “What’s happening?”

“Nothing…” Aimee sighed, catching her breath and feeling her heartbeat settling down. “Just...bad dreams. Sorry about that.”

Shakila groaned and collapsed back onto her pillow. “Chrissake, Aimee. Took me forever to fall asleep the first time.”

Aimee glanced over. “You’re having trouble sleeping too, huh?”

Shakila grumbled. “It’s just...so quiet. Nothing but the humming of the ship. It’s the same as it sounded when we woke up on that shuttlecraft. You know, before they shot us out of the sky.”

“Have you been wondering about that too?” Aimee climbed out of bed and crossed to the bathroom to wash her face.

“Not really. We weren’t answering hails, so policy dictates a swift--”

“No, not that part! The part where we were in that shuttlecraft to begin with!” Aimee ran her finger under the tap, waiting for the water to heat up. “Neither of us have any memory of how we got there, and nobody on this ship seems to know either! We straight up disappeared, reappeared just as mysteriously, and nobody cares!”

“Well, what are they supposed to do about it?” Shakila shrugged. “We’re lucky they even took us back. We’re lucky to be alive. I don’t see a choice other than putting it behind us.”

“I didn’t get this far in life by taking mysteries for granted.” Aimee shed her pajamas and turned on the shower. “Maybe you don’t care, but I want to know everything I can. Tomorrow I’m going to ask Captain Carson if I can borrow a shuttlecraft and examine the spot where we went missing.”

“Oh great, because that’s what we need right now. To annoy the captain even more than we already have,” Shakila groaned and covered her head in her pillow. “Well, I hope she says no and then we can move on without wasting any more of everyone’s time.”

The Written Word / Darwin's Soldiers: Next of Kin
« on: November 13, 2018, 04:06:35 AM »
Last week was the 8-year anniversary of the conclusion of one of my old stories, Ship of State! I can't believe it's been so long since I wrote it, and almost as long since I've written anything in the Darwin's Soldiers universe. But f-22 and I have partnered up to bring you a direct sequel to Ship of State, set about 15 years later and including every single surviving character (plus reappearances of some characters from elsewhere in the Darwin's Soldiers canon!)

If you haven't read Ship of State, this Wiki page will explain the plot up to now. You'll probably also want to read the page on Card of Ten, the story that preceded Ship of State.

This story will be updating once a day until its completion. Enjoy!

Next of Kin

It was a warm evening like any other when Werner and his team finally finished digging the aqueduct. “Whew,” Werner panted, throwing the final shovelful of dirt to the side. “There we go!”

The men cheered. Menken, Werner's second-in-command, clapped Werner on the back. “Still not sure how this thing’s supposed to work, but I’m glad to be done digging!” He nodded approvingly at their handiwork.

“Now we’re going to make concrete out of crushed rock and ash,” Werner explained. “We coat this channel, and it will bring us water from the mountain range after the next storm.”

Werner was the leader of a small colony of settlers eking out a living on a remote moon. It was a tough life, but he and his father Hans were slowly working their way through eras of technology, and with their guidance the standards of living were improving every day.

Menken shook his head and smiled. “The details are still lost on me, I’m afraid, but I’ve got your back.”

“You always do,” Werner nodded, wiping the sweat from his brow. “Trust me, you’re going to love how much water we’ll have.”

“It’ll be nice to put those damn storms to use,” Menken nodded. The colony had long abandoned the plains that filled 90% of the moon’s surface, and were holed out at the base of a range of mountains.

“Oh, they’ll be doing more than that soon,” Werner promised as the men began the hike back to town. “Hans’ wind turbines are getting stronger with every generation. He’s already got a prototype for a model that can handle hurricane force. If it works, we can charge the shuttlecraft power cell overnight instead of over months.”

“You planning another expedition?” Menken asked. Every time they charged the shuttlecraft, Werner took it out to search unexplored areas of the moon. So far he hadn’t found anywhere nicer than the mountains in which they now resided, but it helped for cartography and collection of new plants and exotic resources.

“Not yet, but soon,” Werner replied, as they reached the outskirts of Vurna, their small but respectable collection of thatch and adobe huts. Half of the colony lived under the open sky, the rest preferred to stay in the mountain caves.

“Awesome. You better take me on the next one, I won’t have a sore throat this time,” Menken teased, but suddenly he broke off when two young figures came sprinting towards him. “Oh! Hey, kids!” he exclaimed, surprised to see a pair of tiny figures sprinting towards him.

“Daddy!” both cheered, and the son leapt into his arms.

“What are you two doing out of class already?” Menken looked at the older one, the daughter, for explanation.

“It closed early. Sophie smoked the building out!” she laughed.

Werner sighed as every adult in the group looked at him. “Oh no...”

*      *      *

“Werner, you know I have the utmost respect for you and your family,” The schoolmaster shook his head in frustration. “But I’m at my wit’s end! How am I supposed to teach with your daughter’s constant troublemaking?”

“I’ll talk with her, don’t worry,” Werner assured. “She’s inside?”

The schoolmaster nodded. The two were standing next to the school hut, which still had wisps of tea-scented smoke wafting out of it. “Whatever she did this time, it left a residue all over the walls and ceiling. The kids’ eyes were watering from the smoke when we evacuated, what will their parents think?”

“I’ll handle it,” Werner repeated, walking into the school hut. His daughter briefly looked up, but returned to scrubbing the wall with a damp cloth and bucket when she saw who it was. “Hey Sophie,” Werner coughed; the tea-scented smoke was still a bit thick. “Uh, what happened?”

“I dunno,” Sophie shrugged. She had his auburn hair and her mother’s dark brown eyes. Unlike Werner, who was already feeling lightheaded from the smoke, she didn’t seem affected.

Werner took his work rag from around his neck and helped scrub. “What is this stuff?” he asked, scraping his finger along the milky film.

“It’s burnt sallowroot,” Sophie admitted. “I was...experimenting with it.”

“Experimenting?” Sallowroot was one of the more common plants growing on the moon, though it wasn’t native to the mountains and most of their supply came from expeditions.

“Yeah, I was...brewing tea.”

Werner could tell she was lying. “At school?”

“It was lunch break.”

“So...where’s your kettle?” Sophie didn’t answer. “Sophie, you know you can be honest with me.”

Sophie sighed. “Promise you won’t tell Mom?”

“Promise.”

“Okay. Well, Aron bought some flint from Jesyca and offered to set the sallowroot on fire. He said you could see hallucinations if you breathe in the fumes.”

Werner was silent for a second. “Did Jesyca get the flint from the bakery? Kixoo told me somebody stole it.”

“I don’t know,” Sophie answered a little too quickly.

“Okay. Well, could you ask her not to do that again? And don’t smoke things. It’s bad for you.”

“It only happened the once. Promise.” Sophie sighed. “How do you even know it’s bad for you?”

“I just do.” Werner soaked his rag in the bucket. “And I’ll have to talk to Kixoo about keeping a closer eye on his supplies. I’m sorry, but I can’t have people shoplifting, even if they’re your friends.”

“Jesyca’s not my friend,” Sophie finished her portion of the wall and scooted further away from Werner. “Nobody is.”

“Aron sounds like a good friend.”

“Yeah, cause everyone hates him too.”

“People don’t hate you. Do they?” Sophie didn’t answer. “Look,” Werner patted her on the back. “I wasn’t the most popular kid in school either. And if anyone’s bullying you, please let me know. But it’s okay to only have a few friends.”

“Okay dad.” Sophie spared him a glance. “How long are you going to be here? I don’t need your help.”

      *      *      *

“Girls will be girls,” Seska assured her husband. “Don’t worry yourself. She’ll grow out of it.” The two were eating dinner in their hut. Sophie hadn’t come home yet.

“She’s smoking!” Werner threw his hands in the air. “I didn’t even know there was anything to smoke on this moon! What else could she be getting up to?”

“I’ve told you before, I think that Sapaar boy is a bad influence on her.” Seska grabbed another helping of berries.

“Don’t call him that.” Werner slid his plate over so she’d refill his portion as well. “And on the contrary, I think her friendship with Aron is one of the best things that could happen for this colony. Very few people are seriously trying to merge our two cultures, and she gives that cause exposure.”

Seska sighed. “I’m sure that’s great for you as the colony leader, but as her father, do you really want your daughter to live as a social outcast?”

“She’s not an outcast. She has us.” They were both done with their dinner, so Werner took their plates to the wash basin.

“I suppose.” Seska stood up. “But a young girl needs more than--” She abruptly cut herself off, grabbing the table to steady herself.

“Seska?” Werner asked, looking over.

“I’m...okay.” she assured, locking her knees. “I just…” She trailed off, blinking confusedly. “...Uh…”

Without further ado, she collapsed unconscious back into her chair.

      *      *      *

“You seriously told your dad I taught you how to smoke?” Aron exclaimed. “Thanks for nothing!”

“Relax, he promised not to tell anyone.” Sophie took another long drag on the root, which was crushed to bits and rolled up in leaves dried into rolls.

“There’s nobody else to tell, he runs Vurna!” Aron took the root for his own hit. “If he wanted to, he could kill me, or exile me, or build a jail and put me there forever!”

“You know he’s not going to do any of that.” Sophie sighed and admired the brilliant display of colors lighting up her vision. The two were on the roof of Aron’s hut. Like most Sapaar, he and his mother lived in the caves, preferring the comfort of a rocky roof to having the sky overhead. “Guess we can’t light up at lunch any more.”

“No, we can, you just have to not spill all over your desk and create a giant uncontrollable smoke cloud.” Aron grinned teasingly. His mother ran the brewery and always worked late, so they could count on having the hut to themselves. “Just let me do the lighting.”

Sophie grumbled. “The other kids will tell on us if we don’t have enough to share.” The colors were fading, so she grabbed the blunt back and took another puff. “And now dad’s keeping an eye on the sallowroot supply.”

“Oh, great,” Aron sighed. “Guess it’s back to me getting beat up by the Gaman kids, if I can’t bribe ‘em.”

“Nobody’s going to beat you up again,” Sophie assured. “Not with me around.”

“I don’t want your protection!” Aron pushed her. “But even if I did, what would you even do? Punch them?”

Sophie stuck her tongue out. “Maybe I’d tell Dad they hooked me on sallowroot so he’d have them killed.” Aron rolled his eyes. “And you know they’re not exactly friendly to me either,” she continued. “You think I like the way everyone treats me? The way they look at me?”

“Yeah yeah, I know.” Aron striked the flint against a square of steel to relight the root. “Sucks to be the hero’s kid, or so you claim. You gotta admit, though, it must be cool having three of your classmates named after you.”

“No, it really isn’t.” Both gradually became aware of someone calling Sophie's name.

“Sophie? Sophie!” Menken’s son spotted her when she peeked over the side of the hut. “There you are! Everyone’s looking for you. Your mom’s fallen asleep and won’t wake up!”

      *      *      *

Hans frowned as he checked Seska’s pulse. “This is the darnedest thing. She seems completely healthy.”

“Is it an illness?” Werner asked nervously. “Do we have to worry about everyone else in the colony?”

Hans glanced at him. “I’m more concerned with your wife at the moment. It’s like she slipped into a coma. She didn’t hit her head or anything?”

“No. One second she was standing up, the next she was passed out on the table.”

“Hmm. Maybe she stood up too fast?” Hans wafted smelling salts from his medkit under her nose, to no effect. “I admit her reaction is a bit severe for that.”

“There aren’t really any tests we can run, are there?” Werner wringed his hands in agitation. “Out here on this moon, we don’t even have a lab.”

Hans dabbed her face with a wet cloth. “You store everything collected from expeditions in this hut. Perhaps Seska was exposed to something you brought home. We could draw a blood sample using my old empty morphine syringe. I can look for signs of any contaminants.”

“Let’s do it,” Werner agreed. “Can you start tonight?”

“Of course,” Hans nodded. “We have no time to waste.”

Hans readied his medkit while Werner crossed to his daughter standing awkwardly on the far side of the room. “Sophie, don’t worry. Me and your grandfather are doing everything we can. Mom will be fine.”

Sophie glanced at Seska. “Yeah, whatever.”

“‘Whatever’?” Werner repeated incredulously.

“Yeah.” Sophie glanced outside. “Can I leave?”

“No!” Werner shook his head in frustration. He didn’t have time for this. “Just...keep an eye on your mom. We’ll be back soon.”

As soon as Werner had left, Sophie headed to the storage room in the back and swiped two pocketfuls of sallowroot.

      *      *      *

“Don’t worry about Sophie,” Hans assured his son. “Everyone experiences grief in different ways.”

Werner didn’t answer. Hans changed the subject. “I don’t see anything in Seska’s blood,” he murmured, peering through a microscope cobbled together out of tubes, shuttlecraft pieces and eyeglass lenses. “Wish we had some real equipment.”

“Especially for a coma…” Werner agreed. “That would require something like a brain scan.”

“Yeah.” Hans adjusted the width of between the tubes to focus the magnification. “I’m sorry, but it’s almost impossible to learn anything at this resolution. This isn’t exactly hospital-grade equipment.”

“What about these?” Werner noticed a number of pill bottles in Hans’ medkit. “Will any of them help?”

Hans looked. “Everything useful ran out years ago…” he muttered, checking them one by one. “Well...I guess there’s a slim possibility prinophalyne might tell us something, but I doubt it--”

He broke off when he squeezed a drop into Seska’s blood sample and it turned murky white. “Impossible!” he exclaimed.

“What’s prinophalyne?” Werner asked, looking at the unlabeled bottle.

“The terrorist leader passed it out to his lieutenants before we invaded Pelvanida,” Hans replied. “It can detect someone tainted by anti-matter. We were supposed to use it to confirm Lockdown’s identity since we needed him to power the Einstein-Rosen bridge.”

“Anti-matter… Hans, you and I were turned into anti-matter by the bridge! Are we infecting everyone in the colony?”

“Let’s find out. Ayla, dear, are you awake?” Hans called.

Hans’ wife arrived curiously. The two explained the situation and took her blood sample, but the prinophalyne didn’t react.

“Hmm...so contact with us isn’t enough.” Hans furrowed his brow. “When would Seska have encountered anti-matter?”

“Hans, wait!” Werner burst out as the lightbulb went off. “Remember during our escape from Gaman? We knew not to use the Einstein-Rosen bridge because Seska tried and it rejected her!”

Hans’ eyes widened. “That must be it! Whatever happened to her, this gate must have caused it.”

Werner nodded. “Okay. So now that we know where it came from...what now? We have to save her!”

Hans accepted a cup of tea from Ayla. “Not just her,” he replied gravely. He tested his own blood and it came up positive. “You and I have jumped through that gate too. We need to enact precautions in case we won’t be here to lead this colony for much longer.”

Character Profiles / Into the Black series full cast
« on: July 30, 2018, 05:35:43 AM »
Into the Black is a classic cyberpunk world started by Serris. It has four RPs within its canon, Into the Black, Racing the Storm, Blanking the Slate and Around the Folf. Since none of the authors added their characters to their dedicated threads in this section, I thought it might be useful to have a master sheet for the entire franchise.

(There are also lots of stories, mini-RPs, and even a few video games in the expanded canon. Links here)

Player: Serris
Age: 43

Augmentations (Cybernetic): Implant that allows her to recieve and transmit radio waves as an artificial form of telepathy. The antenna for the implant is disguised as a cosmetic "unicorn horn" implant (surprisingly popular with young Equines). This horn is both sharp enough and firmly implanted enough that she can gore her opponents with it.
Augmentions (Genetic): She carries some artificial genes that allow her to produce much more red blood cells than average and without ill effect so she resists the effects of low oxygen environments and has higher endurance than normal.
Bio: She is an "oil farmer" (a vertical farm that grows genetically engineered algae that produce biosynthesized crude oil). She is very intelligent but few would know that because outside of work, she is almost always high on something. In addition, she has racked up numerous hospital bills due to her rampant drug abuse and subsequent injuries and/or overdoses.
Her drug dependency came about during her college and grad school years. Her perfectionist attitude meant that nothing less than the highest grade was acceptable. In addition, she often took numerous difficult classes (usually going over the permitted credits limit). As a result of this, to make perfect grades, she began using drugs of all sorts ó ranging from nootropics to classic stimulants. No one ever found out but she paid a heavy price ó she became a full blown drug addict. Since her job doesn't pay enough to fuel her drug habit, she has resorted to various legal and illegal ways to make enough creds to buy drugs ó everything from synthesizing and selling drugs, to assorted odd jobs. Currently, her alternative income now consists of stealing augments, parts and other electronic devices and hocking them to fuel her addiction.

He then went to medical school where he earned his Cy.d (Doctor of Cybernetics, licensing him to implant, remove and repair cybernetics).
However, he operated in Palladia and was not authorized to implant class 3 augments. One day, his greed and curiosity overtook him and he agreed to implant a class 3 arm for three million creds. As was the law, he told the augmentee to come back after twenty-four hours and then schedule an appointment.
The next day, he was shocked to find several cops waiting for him at his office. It turns out he had gotten caught by a sting operation to find and shut down illegal implanters of augments. Facing several years in jail, he forfeits his entire operation and license to the Palladia PD in exchange for a jail sentence.
He then flees to Lanthae where he opens a back alley augmentation clinic. Despite it being called a "back alley clinic", it is just as clean and professional as a legit augmentation clinic. However, unlike a legit clinic, he doesn't care if the augmentee is licensed to possess an augment before he implants it ó or for that matter, if the augmentee legitimately obtained the augment.

Name: Doctor Dorothea "Dolly" Wilmut
Player: Serris
Species: Sheep
Bio: Dolly was one of the pioneers for gene therapy. Her work with liposomes, retroviruses and gene targeting at the Watson-Crick Institute paved the way for safe and effective gene therapy. Going to the next step of her research, she moved into gene enhancements and cosmetics ó ranging from simple things like unnatural eye, hair or skin color to things such as enhanced strength and stamina.
Unfortunately, her latest work attracted numerous opponents. Some of whom sent her death threats and vandalized her lab. Despite this, she never backed down ó indeed, she became even more outspoken, sometimesbordering on polemic. Unfortunately, her "rock star" attitude earned her even more detractors, some of whom were themselves scientists, claiming that she was acting in an unprofessional and inappropriate manner.
On the plus side, she also had many supporters.
Sadly, her outspoken and aggressive nature and "rock star" attitude cost her life one dreary morning. During a rally advocating enhancement, an anti-enhancement zealot shot her. The shooter was quickly apprehended but the crowd was so enraged they killed the shooter before the police could arrive. By the time the police arrived, both Dolly and her assassin had died from their injuries.
The aftermath was quite brutal. After a week of mourning, bursts of violence broke out all across the nation as Dolly's supporters attacked anti-enhancement activists, even killing a few.
In the present time, gene enhancements have given way mostly to cybernetics due to their higher liklihood of side effects ó and the fact that cybernetics allows for enhancements not possible by nature, such as radio wave based telepathy. Most gene enhancements now are cosmetic in nature but there are a few who favor the genetic modifications.

Name: Muyee "Marion" Wu
Player: Serris
Age: 38
Species: Human
Augmentations (Cybernetic): cermet lacing on bones rendering them nearly unbreakable, class 3 augments for both arms (left arm: modular weapons hardpoint; right arm: plasma cutter hidden inside forearm; both limbs are superhumanly strong), class 2 augments for both legs (superhumanly strong, can reconfigure into a "hoof" for fast running, retractable grappling claws/cutting spurs on the feet)
Augmentions (Genetic): None
Bio: Her parents (both of them former military) immigrated from Shanghai when she was child. She was an average student through high school and college. She eventually earned a Master's degree in mechanical engineering and she briefly worked at Shockley Electronic Works, a small augment repair shop in the edges of Corona. One day, while she was on her lunch break, some unknown suspects bombed the store, killing all six employees inside. The damage was so severe that the owner could not afford to replace all the losses. Desperate, she worked several menial labor jobs ranging from janitor to stevedore at the docks.
One night, while unloading cargo at the Corona Port, one of her co-workers (who was slightly tipsy at the time) begins flirting with her. Refusing to take "no" for an answer ó and fueled by a few too many beers ó the worker eventually gets quite aggressive. In desperation, she takes a swipe at him. Unfortunately for the man, she is wearing a powered exoskeleton intended for moving very heavy loads. The blow connects with his head, crushing his skull and instantly killing him. Horrifed, she calls the police.
Even though it is ruled a justified act of self-defense and she is cleared of all charges, she loses her job at dockyards (no one wants to work with someone who just killed their coworker). She eventually finds a job teaching a vocational training program at a local college.
After a few years as an instructor, she is approached by some recruiters from Zaloga Cybernetics and offered a job as a quality control technician at one of their factories. Attracted by the job, she agrees to an interview.
She gets the job and is quite happy with it. A year into her job, a tragedy occurs. Unbeknownst to her, she attracted the attention of Serami Heavy Industries ó in a bad way. A small strike team is dispatched to take her out and they plant a bomb in her car.
When she starts up the motor, the bomb detonates. She manages to survive but loses all her limbs, the majority of her bones are broken and she is severely disfigured by the burns. She opts for cybernetic limbs instead of vat grown limbs from her own cells.
At the hospital, surgeons and cyberneticists quickly work to repair the damage sustained from the bomb. Her bones are repaired and strengthened via an injection of nanomachines. Her limbs are replaced with basic class 1 augments. Cosmetic surgery manages to repair the most severe burns but it is not perfect; despite being in her early 30s, she looks like someone in their mid 50s.
After several months of physical rehabilitation, she returns to work as a show of defiance. Later, her boss tells her about a lucrative promotion in the company ó corporate security trooper. The pay is nearly quadruple that of her current job. Enticed, she accepts.
The next year involves licensing for class 3 and class 2 augments, classroom time, training and live fire exercises. At the end of it, she becomes a member of Zaloga Cybernetics's Company Security Squad.
As of now, she has served with the squad for three years.

Age: 24
Species: Human
Augmentations (Cybernetic): Left arm is a class 2 augment that contains an attachment point for various tools. It also contains shock absorbers and vibration dampeners to lessen the discomfort felt when striking with the arm or using the attached tools. The fingers can be magnetized at will to pick up and hold magnetic objects. Computers inside the arm also compensate for involuntary hand and arm movements for maximum precision when using tools.
Augmentions (Genetic): None
Appearance: An unremarkable looking Mexican man about 5’4” with brown eyes, black hair and tanned skin. His left arm is a sturdy but rather beat-up prosthesis with numerous scuffs and dings. He usually wears a tan jumpsuit with numerous pockets and a tool belt.
Bio: Born to a family of Mexican immigrants, Uziel was an exceptional student in high school and college. He graduated with a degree in agriculture and soon found a job as a farmhand at Sky Farms, one of the many hydroponic farms in Seryet City. He proved himself to be a hard worker and coupled with his degree in agriculture, he soon became the foreman of the farm. Unfortunately, he attracted the ire of one of the workers, who happened to be an ex-convict Bison. Angry that Uziel had been promoted over him, he plotted to kill him and make it look like an accident.
One day while Uziel was repairing the algae press, the machine suddenly turned itself on, crushing his left arm. When they finally freed him and took him to the hospital, his arm was so badly damaged they had no choice but to amputate. Later, he learns that someone had intentionally turned the machine on, despite the switch being locked in the “off” position.
At first, he was fitted with an industrial-duty class 1 prosthetic arm but he decided to exploit the potential uses of his artificial limb and applied for a class 2 prosthesis license.
Despite the wages he earns, he is barely above the poverty line due to the legal fees he sustained suing the equipment’s manufacturer.

Bio: Born to genetic engineers of some fame, he expressed an interest in molecular biology since he was a boy. His parents encouraged this, hoping to continue their legacy. In high school, he proved to be an excellent, albeit troubled, ill-tempered and rather vain student. In contrast to his high grades and academic honors, he had significant disciplinary problems. Mostly fighting and shoplifting. He did grow out of this and later earned a Bachelor’s degree followed by a Masters and a Ph.D.
He was soon hired by the Seryetian biotechnology company Drosha Genetics as a gene mods scientist ó at the relatively young age of 24. Most of the gene mods that he researched were supposedly for medical purposes only as Seryet City bans non-medical gene mods. One night, while overhears some young Seryetians lamenting that the largest biotech company in Seryet City doesn’t do cosmetic gene mods.
Realizing that this could a very profitable side business, he opens up a black market in his lab specializing in various non-medical gene mods. Unfortunately, it did not last. He had found a way to target a viral vector containing the GFP protein to specific cell type and make it temporary. Seeing as he could not go through the company’s ethics committee, he decides to test it on himself. As it is a success, he rather foolishly decides to publish his paper in the journal Genetic Modification, claiming that the experimental “subjects” were “Rhesus Macaque Lab Body Model III ”. Since there is no such model of lab body, Doctor Schatten was very quickly found to have grossly violated the internal code of ethics of Drosha Genetics, several laws in Seryet City and the code of professional conduct for the Society of Genetic Engineers (SGE).
As a result, he is stripped of his SGE membership, fired from Drosha Genetics, permanently banned from ever working in the field of biological sciences, fined several million creds and sentenced to seven years in prison
Since he now has a rather extensive (albeit nonviolent criminal record), it is very difficult for him to get employment. He drifted between several jobs ranging from janitor to longshoreman to oil farmer. He even did a stint in a black market cosmetic gene mod company before they were busted.
Currently, he lives with Soren Almaya and Uziel Bautista. He works at a scrapyard at the edge of Seryet City as a “junkyard dog”.

Visual Art / Anyone remember MrDrake?
« on: September 27, 2017, 12:30:30 AM »
MrDrake was a member of the Gang of Five back in the early 2010s, he wrote a number of short stories in the Fanart section. One of them, called Gamer, wasn't an LBT story but instead starred one of his OCs being trapped in a video game. For the last 4 years I've been working on the conclusion, since he disppeared before finishing it, and it's finally done!

Does anyone have contact info or a way for me to get in touch with MrDrake? He just stopped posting out of the blue on both GoF and Skype, I never learned what happened to him. Would love to contact him again if anyone knows a way how.

LBT Fanfiction / LBT: The Musical
« on: October 15, 2016, 04:25:02 AM »
I got the weird idea to make a stageplay set in the LBT universe. My storyline is mapped out to be 4-Acts with a prologue and occasional songs (but not too many, they're all taken from the movies with the lyrics slightly adapted to fit the new story). I'll be posting a scene a day.

(Note: I don't know how a director would physically portray the characters in a stageplay, because humans don't really look like LBT characters even in costume. I just wanted to try writing a play)

Brief synopsis: When Grandpa Longneck falls badly ill after a bad storm weakens the Great Valley's defenses, Threehorn sets a plan in motion to become leader of the herds. As loyalties fall into question, Chomper discovers that an old foe from the Mysterious Beyond is taking the opportunity to settle a score with Littlefoot and his friends. Rated PG, contains romance, politics, drug use, light violence, and songs.

-------------------------------------

Prologue, Scene 1

[A sudden vast expansion of light.  SFX: “Big Bang” sound.  Blackout.]

[Music: James Horner’s original score. Scene opens to a panorama of specks of light.]

Narrator: In a great flash, long long ago, the universe was formed.  Where there once was nothing, now was dust.  And the dust turned into rock, and the rock turned into planets.  And on these planets, life soon formed.  All kinds of life.  Big life, small life, life that liked to spy on other life.  [A comet flies across the panorama.] Our planet, like so many others, grew life as well. The greatest of all life were: the dinosaurs!  [Music hits crescendo, lights come up, showing the scene to be the Great Valley, with Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky, Petrie, and Spike playing some sort of ëpass the ball’ game with a large pinecone. As each character receives the pinecone, their name is spoken, and a spotlight follows the pinecone from character to character.]  And like all dinosaurs, Littlefoot the longneck, Cera the threehorn, Ducky the swimmer, Petrie the flyer, and Spike the spiketail, had to grow up, and learn, and play, in their peaceful home, the Great Valley.

[Characters finish playing and fall to the ground]

Ducky: That was fun, yep yep yep!

Littlefoot: Yeah!

Spike: (yes)

Petrie: It was! You do very good, Ducky.

Ducky: Thank you, Petrie.

Cera: Well, what do we want to do now?

Littlefoot: [picks up the pinecone] How about “Knock the Pinecones”?

Spike: (yeah!  I love bowling!)

Petrie: No, me no good at that game.

Ducky: Oh yes, yes yes yes! I love “Knock the Pinecones”!

Petrie: Me too! Let play!

Cera: No.

Littlefoot: Aw, why not?

Cera: Because the team with Spike always wins.

Spike: (hee hee hee)

Ducky: How about “Sharpteeth and Grasslivers”?

Littlefoot: Sounds good to me. Cera?

Cera: All right, let’s go!

Ducky: Spike and I will be hoppers!

Cera: Littlefoot and I will be furry-scurries!

Petrie: Can me be on Ducky team?

Ducky: No, silly. I am always with Spike.

Petrie: Oh. You sure?

Cera: Petrie, you’re the Sharptooth.  Start counting and we’ll hide!

Petrie: Okay. [Others run off except Spike. Petrie covers eyes.] One, two three, four, [he peeks, and sees Spike standing there] five, six, [he peeks again. Spike hasn’t moved] Go Spike, run!  Seven, eight, [peeks] Run! I only count to ten! Nine… [He gives up and turns around to face Spike] What is it? [Spike smiles knowingly] What? [Ducky giggles from offstage. Spike cocks his head in that direction] Oh, that.

Spike: (you like her, don’t you?)

Petrie: Yeah.

Spike: (tell her)

Petrie: Tell her?  No! Me cannot do that!

Spike: (why not?)

Petrie: Me no know, me not ready!  You remember Littlefoot and Ali?  They think they good and ready until she run off for someone else, and me afraid if me be upfront like Littlefoot, she might…  Spike, I know you Ducky’s adopted brother, but do not tell her, please, okay?

Spike: (I promise)

Petrie: Thanks Spike. And now, ten!

[Petrie starts to chase Spike off stage left, when suddenly a giant gust of wind blows from that direction. Ducky is blown on stage, and trees and vines are ripped to the ground. The windstorm continues for about a minute as Spike, Petrie, and Ducky struggle to remain on stage.  Eventually, it dies down, and they get to their feet.]

Petrie: Ducky! You okay?

Ducky: I think so. What was that?

[Littlefoot and Cera enter from other side of stage, leading parents: Grandpa Longneck, Grandma Longneck, Mr. Threehorn, Ducky’s Mom, and Petrie’s Mom.]

Littlefoot: Are you guys all right?

Parents: What happened? Is everything okay? Are we in danger? etc.

Grandpa: Friends, please! Calm down! [Chattering stops.]  Now, before we do anything, we need to get the others and assess the damage that’s been done!

Threehorn: No! We can’t waste time taking records and figuring out damage assessments, we need to act now!

Grandpa: Mr. Threehorn, we cannot act before we know what is needed to act upon!  We must be patient!

Threehorn: Now is not a time for patience! It’s a time for action!

Ducky: [to Spike] Why do the grownups always argue like this?

Spike: (I don’t know)

Grandma: Will the two of you please calm down!

Grandpa: [to Threehorn] What do you propose we do?

Threehorn: Get organized! Mr. Clubtail and I will form a water conservation group in charge of rationsó

Grandpa: But we don’t know whether water supply is even a problem!  We don’t know anything until we assess the damage!

Threehorn: While you’re doing that, precious water could be draining out into the Mysterious Beyond!

Grandpa: And while you’re forming conservation groups to save it, you might find that there was no need to, and you wasted much more time accomplishing nothing!

Threehorn: Welló [He breaks off, unable to think of a comeback]

Ducky's mom: I think Grandpa Longneck is right.

Petrie's mom: Me too.

Grandpa: Right. Then it’s settled.  Everyone split up and see how each section of the Great Valley has fared.

Threehorn: Hold it, Grandpa. [Other adults exit] Now, normally I’m okay with you calling the shots, but this time I think you’re completely going about this the wrong way!

Grandpa: Please, Mr. Threehorn, this is not the time for us to bicker, we need every hand to work together as one to find out and fix what has happened.

Threehorn: Well I’d be fine with that if we’d have us all working in the right direction, but now we’re wasting what little time we may have!

Littlefoot: Well you’re wrong!

Grandpa: Littlefoot…

Littlefoot: [cont’d] And it doesn’t matter what you think because my grandpa’s in charge!

Threehorn: Oh yeah? Well, guess what, that can change any time I feel like it! [Starts to exit] Come, Cera!

Cera: [Looks at Littlefoot, and turns away haughtily] Humph!

[Cera and Mr. Threehorn exit. Littlefoot approaches Grandpa]

Littlefoot: Grandpa? What did he mean ëthat could change any time’?

Grandpa: Well, Littlefoot, as you know, all the elders in the valley make decisions as a group. I’m not officially in charge; the other grownups just listen to me because I give good advice.  So, in a way, I do hold some position of authority. But Mr. Threehorn is influential enough to try to change that, if he wishes to.  Littlefoot, I need you to be careful when you are around Mr. Threehorn or Cera. Theyó

Littlefoot: Cera is my friend! I trust her!

Grandpa: Littlefoot, I am old, and one day I won’t be able to lead the Great Valley.  When that happens, hopefully you will be old enough to take my place.  Most of the adults are more than willing to accept you. But, when that day comes, Cera will have grown up too, and I fear she’s going to become just like her father.  You’ll need to watch what you say to her because later in lifeó

Littlefoot: Cera will never become her father! She’s my friend!  [Runs over to his friends]

Grandpa: Littlefoot! [Littlefoot doesn’t acknowledge him]  Littlefoot, it’s time to come home.  It’s getting dark, we need to talk.

Petrie: [Nervously, as if he wants to get out of the crossfire] Yeah, it time for me to go too. Bye Littlefoot! Bye Ducky! [exits]

Grandpa: Littlefoot…

Littlefoot: Oh, all right. [walks over to Grandpa] Bye, guys.

Ducky: Good bye Littlefoot! [She and Spike exit in one direction, while Grandpa and Littlefoot exit the other. Blackout.]
