LBT Fanfiction / Nietzche's Soldiers 2
« on: June 30, 2010, 06:07:49 PM »
After way too long, I've finally decided to start posting this story. It takes place before Disruptive Selection, and, like Nietzsche's Soldiers 1, stars Dragonstorm personnel.

For those who aren't privvy to the Darwin's Soldiers universe but still want to read, all you really need to know is that Dragonstorm is an illegal organization holed out in the forests of Oregon, with branches extending throughout the country. And that Darwin's Soldiers is a mixed anthro-human world.

This story will be updated every other day, alternating with Ship of State.

Hope you enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

<If we have to wait five more minutes, I’m leaving.>

<Protes,> Amphinomus sighed, <this is not a combat situation, and we’re right here. You can just talk.>

<I mean, this is their stupid meeting, and here we’ve had to sit for like ten minutes waiting on them.>

<Is someone thought-speaking to someone else? Why wasn’t I invited?>

<Achates, don’t encourage him.>

<Will the three of ye just be quiet? Ah’m trying to relax here and I cannae do it with yer yappin’!>

Four men and a woman were sitting in an otherwise empty office. All were dressed in identical black uniforms. Amphinomus, the leader, also wore a black wingband. To an outside observer, nothing appeared to be happening, certainly not a full-fledged conversation.

But an outside observer wouldn’t know about the Dragonstorm thought network, a radio connection which worked with cranial chips that could broadcast electronic “thoughts” to one or more people, allowing silent communication.

These five were among the first members of the Dragonstorm organization to receive the chips. Officially the First Dragonstorm Reconnaissance Team, but known better as DS-1, these five were often sent out on missions for Dragonstorm. And, despite what someone listening in on their thought conversation would think, they were a close-knit team who trusted each other completely.

<All right,> said Achates finally, <someone break the ice. Who’s going to speak first?>

<Sounds to me like Achates just volunteered,> Protesilaus, a platypus, cackled.

<Both of you,> Amphinomus sighed again, <please stop thought-conversing.>

<Okay, then, Ampy, you say something,> challenged Achates.

<Yeah,> nodded Protesilaus.

Amphinomus rolled his eyes. <If it’ll get you to shut up.>

A few moments of silence.

<We’re waiting.>

“All right, fine!” snapped Amphinomus, just as Drs. Branston and Zenarchis walked into the room.

“Did you have something to say, commander?” asked Dr. Branston.

“No, sir.” Amphinomus ignored the two stifling laughter next to him.

“All right, then.” The doctors had been followed by a younger Siamese cat, who looked nervously at the other men. “This is your new recruit to DS-1. He was assistant to Dr. Winters and proved himself at scouting. He has been given the codename Dolon.”

The team looked less than thrilled.

“We’ve got another teammate?” complained Protesilaus. “I thought we were pushing it with five!”

“In Cmdr. Amphinomus’ report on your failed mission at the Zzyzyx Desert Studies Center, it was made abundantly clear that none of you are adequately specialized in stealth and surveillance! I speak mainly of Camilla knocking over an entire rack of cooking equipment, and you setting off a round of explosives in the middle of the solar panel array you were supposed to be stealing!”

Camilla, a lean jaguar, averted her eyes, but Protesilaus defiantly crossed his arms and glared at Amphinomus.

“For that reason,” Dr. Branston continued, Dolon is now on your team.” He motioned for Dolon to take a seat with the others. “Feel free to introduce yourselves.”

Dolon looked at the short African-American man. “You must be the leader, Amphinomus. I recognize you from the briefing pamphlet.”

Amphinomus nodded.

“We call him Ampy,” offered Achates.

“Like ëEll we do, it’s what you call him!” Hippolytes, a burly Snowshoe Hare, interjected.

“You’re just jealous because your nickname is Hippo.”

Amphinomus introduced the others.

“Camilla is second in command. She’s our medic, and provides backup to whoever needs it.”

The jaguar raised her eyebrows, but otherwise coolly ignored Dolon.

“Achates is the team hacker and technician.”

Achates grinned.

“Protesilaus is the demolitions expert.”

The platypus’ expression registered neither positive nor negative feelings towards Dolon.

“And Hippolytes is the sniper.”

“Ah do more’n that!” grunted Hippolytes in protest.

“Yes, well, back to the assignment at hand.” Dr. Branston shuffled some papers. “Since you and several other DS teams have failed to acquire alternate power sources, we are getting desperate for power. The lesser projects have been put on energy rations starting five hours ago, and the most important ones will be likewise in a matter of weeks. As you can tell, this is a serious issue.”

He looked up. “Our current problem deals with SORA Gas & Electric. Are any of you familiar with it?”

“I am,” said Camilla. “It’s an Alaskan-based energy provider and Dragonstorm-controlled affiliate. I’ve been there once.”

“A month ago SORA stopped sending its weekly deliveries, so we sent DS-4 to investigate. That was two weeks ago, and they haven’t checked in yet.”

“Could they be delayed?” asked Amphinomus.

“For two weeks? Commander Turnus has never taken so long. We fear something has happened to the factory, and we can’t afford to lose it, so we’re sending you, our best team. Finds out what has happened to SORA, try to reestablish contact with DS-4, and above all, guarantee our energy supply. Can you do this?”

Amphinomus nodded, then looked at his team. “Yes, sir.”

LBT Fanfiction / Darwin's Soldiers: Ship of State
« on: June 30, 2010, 05:59:59 PM »
Finally, I feel I've gone far enough in this storyline that I can start publishing this story. It look like it'll be rather long, Card of Ten length.

This is a 'sequel' or sorts to Card of Ten. It shows what happened to Werner and Hans, who were left behind in the first story.

I don't expect anyone remembers the storyline to Card of Ten, so here's a recap:

A team of government scientists and soldiers (including Hans and Werner) traveled through a device called an Einstein-Rosen Bridge, which transported them through time and space to a planet called Gaman. Werner was separated from the others early on and ingratiated himself into the Gaman society.

The rest of the team made an enemy of the Sapaar, rivals to the Gaman, who rigged the planet to explode. At the end, Werner's father Hans chose to stay with his son, and both were left behind on the disintegrating planet.

This is the story I really wanted to write; however, I am well aware that most of my potential readers who joined the Darwin's Soldiers RPs after Card of Ten may want a story that has more to do with the current storyline, so I am posting Nietzsche's Soldiers 2 simultaneously in a separate thread. I'll alternate which story I update every other day.

So, without further ado, Ship of State!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A series of tremors rocked the city. Werner didn’t know why. Lights flickered and went out. Screams ripped though the air.

Werner and a large group of the cityfolk, called the Gaman, had just raided the power plant, in an attempt to capture it and cripple the standing government, controlled by a people known as the Sapaar. They were on the verge of success, when this suddenly happened.

Inside the power plant, Hans grasped Werner’s arm for stability as the people around them started panicking. “What’s going on?” he cried.

“Not sure, but whatever’s happening, we should get outside!” Werner jumped back as a large chunk of the ceiling fell in front of him. “Everything’s falling apart!”

Werner started forcing his way through those around him. The cry was rippling through the ranks. “Get out of the factory! Get outside!”

The walls started crumbling, leaving the air thick with dust. Sunlight peeked through, revealing both Gaman and Sapaar attempting to leave the factory.

“Why is the power plant collapsing?” asked Hans again, panting as they burst into the front lobby. Light from outside revealed that smoke and destruction permeated the entire city. “Why?” he repeated, as if he were incapable of comprehending this new development.

Werner could barely grasp what was happening himself; a few minutes ago, they were joyously celebrating their successful takeover of the power plant. Now, they were about to lose the entire planet, and probably their lives. “Keep moving!” Werner commanded, forcing himself to focus on the problem at hand. Get his people out of immediate danger, and then try and get them off the planet.

“It’s no better out there!” Menken, one of Werner’s soldiers, retorted.

“At least there’s no ceiling to fall on us!”

Outside, cries echoed through the city, and shockwaves broke up the ground under their feet.

“What do we do?” another, named Brut, yelled.

Werner tried his radio. “James? Shelton? Does anyone copy?” No answer.

“That reminds me!” Hans grabbed Werner by the shoulders. “James said the bridge back to Pelvanida opened up sometime around now. If we can get there, we might be able to get some of these people off Gaman!”

“Lead the way,” nodded Werner. “Stay with me!” he called to the people around him. “I have a way to safety!”

As he led the way through the crumbling streets, Werner started feeling light headed. Gaman was breaking up, and the planet was losing atmosphere.

His radio suddenly cackled. Werner snatched it up.

“This is Hawkeye. I am sendó”

“Hawkeye!” Werner cut in. “What happened? What’s going on? Where’s the rest of the team?”

“They are with me. Please let me speak. The Sapaar are attempting to destroy the planet rather than let the Gamanians take it back,” Hawkeye reported grimly. “They will succeed. However, we have locatedó”

“óWhere are you?” Werner asked. He saw the Einstein-Rosen Bridge ahead, a glimmering portal of blue light.

“Look up.”

A small shuttlecraft shot overhead, shooting towards the bridge. Before it entered, it pulled into a loop, to correct the angle of approach.

Hawkeye continued. “There is little time, so please don’t interrupt me again. I have transmitted coordinates to you showing the locations of more of these shuttlecraft. Two are in your proximate areaó” Before he finished, the shuttle shot through the bridge and the connection was lost.

“Why can’t we just go through the bridge?” asked Hans, puzzled, when suddenly a figure was ejected from the portal forcefully. It hit the ground and went rolling.

Werner ran to it. It was Seska, a Gamanian, looking battered and confused.

“How did you get in the bridge?” asked Werner, helping her to her feet.

“IóI was on the shuttle with James, and…” She looked around. “…then, I wasn’t…”

Werner looked at the bridge. Suddenly he realized it. “We can’t go through the bridge!” he yelled.

“Why not?” asked Hans.

“I don’t have time to explain!” Werner checked the coordinates Hawkeye had sent. “We’re splitting up! Follow Hans or myself!” Werner showed Hans the first coordinate set. “It’s a few blocks away. Can you get there, and find the shuttlecraft?”

Hans nodded. “The portal?”

“Not now. Just trust me, and get half these people to a shuttle. Go!”

Faction: Good
Appearance: She wears pants and a shirt. Her fur is more black than anything else.
Specializations: Hacking, theivery
Powers/Cybernetic enhancement: N/A

Name: Subject 19
Creator: MrDrake
Age: Unknown, looks to be about the same age as Aimee
Species: Vulpine
Faction: Dragonstorm Experiment
Appearance: Looks much like how Aimee looks like, except for having normal arms instead of cybernetic arms and the face of it has cracks in it, much like how, say, corruption of darkness or something like that would have as an affect on the skin....well, what one would see in fiction anyway along with a darker fur colour.

He was approached by Dragonstorm agents at the age of 22 to take part in an experiment using stolen telepathic technology. The experiment worked, and a chip was implanted in Aydin's head, granting him the ability to communicate with others with similar chips from a distance. After a while, it was apparent that Dragonstorm was an evil organization, and Aydin defected from them.

The Fridge / My computer has stopped recognizing apostraphes

Quote
"

Now, I'm not sure what icon you guys see in the quote box, but it's supposed to be a quotation mark. Recently, my computer has started seeing them as a white question mark surrounded by a black diamond whenever I or somebody else pastes text from a word processing document. Even stories that used to render perfectly, like my Darwin's Soldiers stories, have filled with black-diamond question marks that make things ridiculously hard to read.

Is there a way to fix this?

Visual Art / What webcomics do you read?
« on: December 14, 2009, 06:11:28 PM »
Hi. I'm just wondering what webcomics you guys read. There are loads of good ones out there. This also may be a good thread for those of you looking for some new ones :)

My favorite webcomic is Freefall, a science-fiction/furry webcomic (though the only furry is Florence, an anthropomorphic red wolf and my favorite character.)

I also like The Adventures of Dr. McNinja, for the sheer and utter awesomeness that happens on every page. And then of course there's xkcd, one of the most popular webcomics on the Internet.

LBT Fanfiction / Nietzsche's Soldiers: Will to Power
« on: October 27, 2009, 03:43:40 AM »
This is a new Darwin's Soldiers story I've been working on. Regular updates won't be coming yet, but I thought I could post the first section as sort of a 'teaser', just to show what the story is going to be about. This story takes place between the second and third RPs.

This time, I think I did a good job of explaining the back story within the actual story, so I don't think a Darwin's Soldiers recap is neccesary. However, new readers should know this is a mixed anthro-human world, and reading Schroedinger's Prisoners
Schroedinger's Prisoners
would be a good idea. That's all I'm going to say.

Dragonstorm and some of Serris' characters used with permission.
_____________________________________________________________________________

A lone Beagle scientist stood at a radio work station. It was a transportable work station, meaning it could be rolled to virtually any place the user wished it to go. However, this was only part of the reason why the work station was in the middle of a forest.

Dr. Kerzach, who was hiding behind a nearby bush, knew why. The Beagle, and all the other scientists currently camped in the forest, were members of an illegal group who called themselves Dragonstorm. After escaping Nevada with their lives, the group traveled up north, hiding in the wildernesses of Washington and Oregon. Nobody knew where Dragonstorm had gone. Nobody but Kerzach.

The Beagle set the frequency of the radio he was working on, and pressed a button. A shrill beep went off on a work station about thirty feet away. The Beagle left this one and walked in that direction.

Once he was far enough away, Kerzach darted to this work station and quietly started sliding open all the drawers. Finding a small notebook, he flipped it open and started scanning the pages.

It included a list of frequencies, requiring varying security clearances. Kerzach flipped to the last page with writing on it.

There it was. The password for the highest secure frequency is…

…in code. Kerzach swore silently to himself.

He was startled when the work station let off a shrill beep, signifying the imminent return of the Beagle. Kerzach quickly replaced the notebook, and darted back into the bush.

The Beagle returned shortly, and continued to work. After a few minutes, it perked its ears.

Kerzach knew to trust a dog’s hearing. He shimmied deeper into the bush, and soon he too could hear footsteps approaching the work station.

From within the bush he couldn’t see much, but he could tell two more people had arrived. One of them said, “How’s the work coming, Monty?”

Montgomery sighed. “Not good. I can’t find a way to shield the transmissions from outside sources. Everything I try stops it from reaching the intended receiver as well.”

“Well, keep trying. We don’t want any hikers accidentally picking up our radio signals, and we can’t operate without being able to communicate.”

“Is that all you came out to tell me?”

“No, I was checking to see if you had a second person to guard the other work station.”

“Why would I need a guard?”

“Why don’t any of you listen to me?” the second voice exclaimed, frustrated. “I was attacked by somebody during the escape, and I’m positive they’ve come with us masquerading as a Dragonstorm member! I’ve narrowed the possibilites down, but until I catch them we have to be careful about leaving important information lying around!”

“But you said it was a human male,” reminded Montgomery, “so why’d you bring a human male guard? He could be the spy.”

“Darien was driving the truck that carried Lab 101 away,” said the second voice, referring to the mobile building that had been used to house the equipment and personnel during the escape, “so obviously he couldn’t have attacked me mid-voyage. Just leave him at whatever work station you’re not, so we can be sure nobody tries to steal the frequency passwords. I’m positive it’s what the spy will try and get next.”

Dr. Kerzach’s heart sank. So much for getting the password now. He couldn’t even remember what the coded password was he’d just looked up. At the next possible moment he slipped away deeper into the forest.

The second voice had been Keegan O’Neill, a scientist who had indeed been making life very difficult. He’d almost discovered Kerzach’s true identity several times, and every day fewer and fewer options seemed available.

But even O’Neill didn’t know that there were two spies.

Kerzach located the tree that had been designated that day’s rendezvous. A dark-haired man, slightly taller than average with brown eyes, was waiting for him.

“Well? Did you get them?” Shelton asked.

Kerzach shook his head. “No. And I only had one shot before O’Neill arrived, with a guard.”

Shelton swore. “O’Neill should have been born a pit bull. I wish I'd shot him when I had the chance.”

“At least he didn’t see your face. At any rate, did you finish changing your identity?”

Shelton nodded. “You’re looking at Roger Simpson, surveyor.”

During the escape, Shelton had pretended to be Storke, a murdered Dragonstorm scientist. However, once they’d found out Storke had been an ostrich, Shelton had checked the rosters for a different alias. He’d settled on Simpson, a surveyor left at the scene of the crime, because he was human, and because he shared Shelton’s initials. Kerzach, who had impersonated deceased fellow ornithoid Bradley Gallo, didn’t have this problem.

“Retroactively changed the rosters, and just switched all of Storke’s passwords and such to Simpson,” Shelton continued. “Only reason I got away with it is that the data's already messed up from all the traveling and such. Some personnel still haven’t gotten around to registering.”

Kerzach nodded. “Do you know when we’ll be leaving this forest?”

“Don’t know if we’re going to. Now that the routine’s settled down, the folks upstairs are thinking of parking camp. This is the furthest we’ve been able to get the base from civilization.”

“Fine by me. This is still our best chance to get those passcodes. With all the cover from the trees and foliage, and such.”

“Don’t forget the foliage works in O’Neill’s favor, too. I'm comnstantly having to watch my back, and people can get really close before you notice they're there."

Kerzach nodded. “Let’s head out. Need to go anywhere?”

“Our tent.” The shortage of supplies had forced personnel to dorm with ëtentmates.’ “I need to lift the ink of the signature on my ID card and resign it.”

They started the walk. They passed several other work stations and scientists walking through the woods. While the majority of equipment stayed in Lab 101, most of the lesser-important projects and personal living areas had been spread out through the nearby areas of forest.

“There we are,” pointed Shelton, spotting their tent among a few others. Some other scientists were purifying water or preparing dinner outside. Shelton and Kerzach waved to them as they approached their tent.

Kerzach looked at the large ranch salad one of them was making. “Maybe we should get dinner first. You hungry?”

No answer. He looked over. Shelton had suddenly stiffened up and passed out, collapsing on the ground.

Kerzach looked around wildly. All the other scientists had collapsed too. In seconds, everyone but him was unconscious. What the hell just happened?

He kneeled down next to Shelton. “Shelton, wake up. Shelton?”

He heard heavy footsteps coming. Grabbing Shelton around the shoulders, Kerzach dragged the both of them out of sight behind the bushes.

The Fridge / How to reach GOF on google
« on: October 15, 2009, 03:49:29 PM »
Hi. Just wondering if anyone knows any words or phrases that one can google that will provide a link to this forum. I generally use "Zanasiu," as that's the name of the main character in the Drawin's Soldiers RP, and apparently the only place on the web that it's used. My character's name, Rudyard Shelton, works too.

Several of the more uncommon usernames work, like Malte279, jedi472, or my own, but since they're not the top link I tend to use Zanasiu instead.

Does anyone know any other things that you can type and get this forum on Google?

One of our resident artists who isn't really around anymore, for the longest time you could google image "Land Before Time Ducky" and find one of his drawings on the first page. It's a major accomplishment. :)

Happy birthday, o artist, and may many more successful pictures spring forth from your pen! :celebrate :birthday :celebrate

Land Before Time Captions / Something out of the RPG

I want to repost Neil Cubestrong up again, but I'm not sure which section that would go in. It's a Land Before Time RPG, so LBT images, but it's also kinda animation. But it's not really either. Heck, you could make an argument for real life since the RPG is a real life project, not part of a story. Where do you think it should go?

EDIT: moved it for you. ;)

This guy stuck around for about a year and had 27 posts, so I think that's good enough for a birthday greetings. Happy birthday!

Here's some songs to celebrate, all tenuously linked to your avatar/username and something they'd play at birthdays:

She Wolf - Shakira

Barking at the Moon - Bolt

Snow - Red Hot Chili Peppers (Specifically the line "running through the fields where all my tracks can be concealed")

This could be a touchy memory for some, so of course don't join the discussion if you don't feel comfortable, but I'm just curious what some of you remember of the day. It's especially interesting for me because I don't remember anything. My parents kept it hidden from me, and I must not have gone to school, because 9/11/2001 came and went and I was none the wiser.

What about you?

It may be a tough call, but I also would like to see which of my many characters people like the most. Thanks to Starfall, Serris, GVG, brekclub, and Kit12 for the idea.

This is another DS story I'm planning. I'm starting this thread early because I want to give DS RP'ers a chance to tell me whether they approve of me using their characters. In its current version, at least one main character has been taken from each user's roster, including some characters that have never seen the spotlight in my stories before. Please let me know if you don't want your characters to partake.

It includes aspects of Card of Ten, but is by and large its own story, starring the real characters from our RPs. It's set on Earth sometime after the (EDIT! now third) RP. Updates to this thread won't start until Card of Ten is finished, which is wrapping up.

For those not privvy to Darwin's Soldiers so far, read my summation in the first post of the Card of Ten story thread.

Reactions to my other two stories have been mostly positive, so I hope you guys will enjoy this one as well!
