Title: [Project] LBT Monopoly
Post by: Mumbling on March 20, 2013, 01:51:06 PM
Hi guys!

This was an idea a couple of years ago, though due to circumstances it never continued. Strangely enough the idea of LBT Monopoly came up in the GoF chat. I wouldn't mind actually making such a monopoly... So, the topic is here to get some ideas! :D

Feel free to post any ideas for anything regarding this game on this topic.

*checks with her actual monopoly game*

So we need the following:

2x Dice (I'm thinking we may want to use standard dice here)
8x Characters
16x chance cards
16x  community chest
2x blue and brown coloured street cards
3x green, yellow, red, orange, pink and lightblue street cards
A currency
Another name (possibly entirely different names) for the railroad system
Another name for the utilities

(We may want to rename the chance cards and the community chest ones)

For the characters, I was thinking of making them either from clay (or if Malte has got the time/spirit, we could actually have them cast from tin)Possible 'street' locations:Currency ideas:- This post will be updated constantly with your ideas to make this work -

Edit 28/7/2019:

Reboot!

To do:
- Spreadsheet for Chance cards
- Spreadsheet for Community Chest cards
- Add colors to properties
- Decide on playable figurines (main characters or generic dinosaurs)
- Board design
- Card design
- Probably a lot more that I am forgetting

So far we've thought of some chance cards, such as:
- Spike eating everyone's treestars (Which serve as money);
- The eggstealers snatching eggs (Houses... Hotels would be nests) - DUH!;
- The player getting the second place in a Miss Great Valley contest (#1 would be Ducky, obviously);
- The Stone of Cold Fire floating real low and Littlefoot demanding to be paid 15 treestars to be quiet about it. :)

Further place suggestions:
- Two boulder pass
- The rock that looks like a longneck
- The great divide
- Berry Valley
- Meadow of the Jumping Waters
- Rubies Thinking place
- Hanging Rock

There are many other locations but many of them are not officially named.
One could build nests (as houses) and caves (as hotels). Technically it wouldn't make a lot of sense though to build those in some of the scariest LBT locations :yes

You must definitely tell Gus about these plans Iris. They will make his day :lol

Go to the Mysterious beyond.

Go directly to the Mysterious Beyond.

Do not pass Go.

Do not collect 200 treestars.

Give Mr. Thicknose XY treestars, because he teaches you(he's the gang's teacher :D)

Additional locations
-the Sheltering Grass
-Swooper's Cave (this should be a cheap location)
-the Little Valley (in the Mysterious Island)

Luck leaves (chance cards)

You find Strut's secret stash of greenfood. Take the 20 treestars.

You are raming a treestar tree to no avail. Other players pity you and each gives you 10 treestars to eat.

Together leaves (Community cards)

A storm damaged all your nests. Give the helping saurian hands 10 treestars for every nest that needs to be fixed.

Your clumsy walking up a hill caused dirt to fall into the water. Pay 100 threestars to the water watchers.

Utilities should be Water Watchers. Railroads should be Ways into the Valley.

I have a few ideas, forgot what the card's names are since I've not played it in a long time.

1 could be you loose a turn since you have to help do repairs, as seen in some movies, or have to help pile rocks up since a new way was found into the great valley.

Another one maybe you have to help chase off some fast biters so may loose a turn.

Maybe you get extra tree stars or something since you found a tree full of ripe tree sweets.

Maybe the adults are arguing again so you get an extra turn since you go and do what needs doing while they are arguing.

You saved Tricia from death by drowning. Mr. Threehorn(or Toppsy, what you prefer) gives you XY treestars.

Hmm...I used to make concept designs for Monopoly boards at my old school; let's see if I can help with ideas.

Well, you could easily make it so that the game represents a hypothetical GOF/S journey; make "Go" the Great Valley, and then have every property be a location in the Mysterious Beyond. The playing pieces should all be the Gang of Seven; Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky, Petrie, Spike, Ruby and Chomper, and as a result, each cycle of the board becomes leaving the Great Valley, going on an adventure through the Mysterious Beyond, and then returning home...before repeating the adventure again! "Go To Jail" should be "Earthshake", and "Jail" itself should be a picture of the unconcious Sharptooth in the divide. "Free Parking"...well, let's come back to that. Houses and Hotels...probably the best thing for them to be would be Treestar trees and Treesweet trees. Treestars would have to be the money. Chance and Community Chest...darn, I'm not sure. I suppose you could use these to reference the songs; perhaps one is called "Adventuring" and has a profile shot of all the GOS walking in a line to represent it. I couldn't help but think that picture of Littlefoot seeing his reflection in the treestar's dew would make a good picture, too.

Obviously, all of the properties should be major locations, as opposed to things like characters or objects - I remember seeing a Monopoly board based off Myst (which is all about logic puzzles in amazingly beautiful worlds) where half the locations were objects from the series, as opposed to the actual locations you get to visit. Instead, they should be referenced in the Chance and Community Chest cards. For example, the card "Advance To Illinois Avenue" could be something like "The Rainbowfaces show you a shortcut to [random location]" (sorry, couldn't think of a better example on short notice).

Each property should have a picture of the location on it, and then an image of a prominent figure who lives in that area next to it. For instance, the Land of Mists could be a property, and have Tickles or Ichy & Dil on it. This could also be used to give places names when there isn't an official name for them; placing Archie beside a picture of the caverns from the fourth film would allow you to call them "Archie's Caverns". Course, you should shy away from placing any of the playable characters on a piece; rather than show Chomper next to the "Mysterious Island", show Elsie, or one of Chomper's Parents. Each location should have some vague link to its neighbours; either they're all dangerous or safe, they're all in the same area, they were all visited in the same film, etc.

The Railroads could be significant natural formations; "The Rock That Looks Like A Longneck", "Saurus Rock", "Threehorn Peak" and...something else. Failing that, the first two could be the utilities, and "Threehorn Peak" could be a location (with Rinkus and Sierra on it).

As for other locations...well, how many significant locations outside the Great Valley could be used? I haven't seen the TV series yet, so you'll have to help me here...

*The Tree Grove (LBT I, where the longnecks eat all the green food)
*The Rock That Looks Like A Longneck (LBT I)
*The Mountains That Burn (LBT I)
*The Lake (LBT I, where Sharptooth gets killed)
*The Trapped Water (LBT III, where the meteorites blocked off the Thundering Falls)
*Archie's Caves (LBT IV)
*The Land of Mists (LBT IV)
*The Desert (LBT V)
*The Mysterious Island (LBT V)
*The Smaller Valley (LBT VI, housing Saurus Rock - which should be located nearby)
*Saurus Rock (LBT VI)
*Threehorn Peak (LBT VII)
*The Hot Pools (LBT VIII)
*Big Water (LBT IX, with Mo)
*The Sun Crater (LBT X, where the Longnecks gather)
*Bron's Valley (okay, this one hasn't appeared, but it'd be a way to work him in)
*The Caverns (LBT XI, where the Tinysauruses live)
*Berry Valley (LBT XIII)

Alternatively, you could draw a picture on the central area of the board of the Mysterious Beyond and the Great Valley, and divide the board so that a certain area is the Great Valley, and the rest is the Mysterious Beyond (perhaps the purple and dark blue properties are the Great Valley?). Course, with that in mind, it could make sense to make "Free Parking" into "Big Water".

By the way, you should consider working in some of the older elements of Monopoly that don't exist in the newer versions. For instance, did you know there's a bunch of Chance and Community Chest cards that have been taken out? Some are fairly simple (It's Your Birthday, Collect $10 From Each Player), some are kind of odd (Drunk In Charge, Pay $20/We're Off The Gold Standard, Collect $50) and some are just cruel (Collect 10% Of Every Player's Money)! There was even an expansion pack called Stock Exchange that replaced Free Parking with an extra square that let you buy stocks. Whenever you landed on them, you got money depending on how many stocks you owned (although in practice, I found this worked better if you made it that you could buy stock and earn money whenever you landed on Chance or Community Chest).

Very nice and in-depth information there Almaron. I'll see if I can get a document set up with all the ideas we've got so far so that we could work out the different possibilities. I'll grab my mom's old monopoly game (from when she was young) when I'm visiting my parents coming weekend, so I can see if there are any different chance/community cards.

Looks interesting. I'm not that much of a graphic designer, but let me know if there's any other way I can help out.

Alright, I've been making some progress with the game! I'm going to be working on chance/community cards today. If anyone has time today to help out, I am looking for a bunch of screenshots:

- images of the 8 characters (gang of seven + sharptooth, maybe. Definitely at least the gang of five.)
- images of all properties (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1eOhXWCwxwEVd0vx9aW8jeMLdWE3VemdmvizxDrv8C-8/edit#gid=0)

Please feel free to link to useful images in this topic. I have no issues removing the background, so it doesn't have to be transparent. Even if you have just 1 to contribute that's a huge help!

For the characters, a full-body shot is preferable. Here's an example of how that will look like in the game:

Of course I hope to have 3d models of the characters at some point, but for now this will suffice :)

Edit: first version of the game is live: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1850213493

Feel free to add it to your library and check it out.

We need to have the other characters actually standing a chance at winning. It would be much too easy if M'lord participated  :rhett_brag
