D = S

Clue:  Eyes, plugs, and networks need these, though not necessarily the same kind.

This one is a bit tough, but you should get it!

LBT Fanart / Character Redrawings - Chomper
« on: July 30, 2007, 11:49:42 AM »
Thanks!  What I did was I took a frame of a screenshot, and I used a pencil tool to draw on top of it.  I then filled it up with a sample of a colour from the actual screenshot, so colours are pretty accurate.  Then with some Photoshop coolness, I thickened the lines and voila.  The screenshot would take too long to edit, since some lines after enlarging it become non-existant, so might as well get a good quality picture by redrawing the lines myself.

I made a new character redrawing of Chomper.  I think what movie and what scene this is in is pretty obvious. :p

If anyone has suggestions of frames that may be interesting to redraw, tell me what movie/scene, and I can take a snapshot, or if you can supply a fairly good sized snapshot, that'd be great too!

LBT Fanart / Character Redrawings - Ducky

It's shot from a movie.  The TV episodes aren't detailed enough to get a good full-body screenshot.

Hint:  It's a shot from one of the classic LBTs (<=6), and you can't miss it when you see it!

I found it in my random page clickings while in Wikipedia.  Apparently, one of them linked to Action9000's music website, and I found these forum's from that site.

You probably noticed it from my avatar I've had for a week or so, but I've taken up the hobby of taking screenshots of certain frames, and redrawing it using Photoshop CS2, and recolouring it.  Here's my picture of Ducky, in her adorable pose:

Kudos to who guesses what movie and what scene this was in.  And if you guess correctly, you can suggest me a new frame to draw of any character. :p

Land Before Time TV Series (2007) / Coming to DVD

You have no idea the capabilities of these programs do you?  If you've used photoshop (which I'm sure very few of you have), it can do just about anything.  I could turn 1 drawn image into a bunch of images and make a little movie out of it.  And photoshop's a nothing program.  I can't even imagine what their programs are capable of.  I'll bet there are only around 2000 drawn images out of the 64,000 that are used.  I'm not kidding.  Technology is the largest factor in creating these tv eps.

You must understand, landbeforetimelover, that before they started using technology for the TV episodes and the movies (Pre-LBT 7), they all drew all the frames by hand.  You are correct in that they would not be able dwell in a single frame for too long, since it would take years to complete a full movie, but artists don't draw the whole frame you see.  You cannot treat a frame in the same way as a detailed picture, they simply don't compare to each other in the development.

In the TV series, you noticed that they had computer-generated scenes of the dinosaurs walking.  You also probably noticed how ugly they looked.  Sure, they could make the whole series like that and spend around half a week or less on an episode, but it would not look as good, and it would ruin the whole point of a cartoon.  Cartoons looks better than that.  I personally believe even the soft shading techniques used in the newer LBT 10 (though I didn't notice it as much in LBT 12) looks much worse than the classic LBTs (6 and below), because it has so much of a more animated cartoon feel to it, and they sure spent a lot of quality time on it.

Before they used technology, animations were done by first an animator drawing a background for these scenes.  You probably would notice that a ton of backgrounds go into a movie, however you would also notice that most of them are re-used.  The dynamic objects, such as boulders and characters are the tricker part.  They are also drawn separate from the background, and are also drawn individually.  However, they still reuse these "cels" quite a bit.  If you noticed in the first Land Before Time movie, when Littlefoot's grandparents and Ducky's parents are eating leaves in the beginning of the movie, they are reused once again right before the ending credits.  This saves a heck of a long time, since at that time they were producing movies every two years.

With the help of computers, the process would seem to be much faster, but they would still have to draw the pictures by hand in a sort of way before letting the computers colour it and place it in the animations.  The point is that computers do not make the work any faster than it was, it just made it easier, and you cannot treat a picture that an artist would draw in a front cover to a frame in a movie.  A picture would obviously take much more time since there is no basis from a previously drawn background and other character animations to be reused from.  And to take the LBT TV series DVD cover to an example, they probably never actually took any of the images you see on the cover from a TV episode.  They simply would not spend any less time than something the viewer would see on a DVD cover for minutes than glance at for a split second of a frame.

Land Before Time TV Series (2007) / Possible Wikipedia filth

Can't tell for sure. I don't know who edits the LBT wikipedia sections. Its nobody from this forum.

I've been editing Wikipedia, but I've always put in information that I can verify 100%, such as the majority of the aired episode synopsis/songs.  I tend not to believe the other stuff that I see, but I don't touch them either.  It sickens me when people put in stuff that can't be verified, and I'm removing them from the page when I get the chance.  Latest one is a rumour of a movie called "Chomper's Return".  It'd be cool, but it's totally unverifiable until we get some actual proof.

As for the new episodes in Canada, there hasn't been any new episodes for almost 3 weeks, and YTV is still showing Transformers this week.  I guess the best we can do is check their website.  I'll still be recording at that same time to make sure they haven't messed up their scheduling, but I'll definitely see if it's on YTV.

I used a number of different programs, each one with a different purpose.  To write the sheet music, I used Noteworthy Composer ($40 for the registered version, which I use), which is a music notation program designed for writing sheet music on the computer.  The program is able to play back your sheet music using MIDI.  As a "side effect", one is also able to save their music as a MIDI file.

Yeah, I have been using Notesworthy but I've been using the trial version, so a big ugly "TRIAL VERSION" gets stamped on any printed things.

In order to make the PDF file, I had to hunt down a rather obscure program, called GSView 4.8.  It is able to convert something that has been printed to a file, to a PDF document.

Thanks for the program, I might find this very useful.

All of the above can be done with free trial versions of the software.  The Mp3 was produced using much more powerful, sophisticated and expensive software.  If you have heard any of our Gang of Five singing projects, I used the same programs here as I used on those.  The programs used were:
FL Studio 7 Producer Edition ($200)
EastWest/Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra, Gold XP Pro edition ($500)
EastWest/Quantum Leap Colossus($600)

All of which I purchased (I am quite an audio nerd :p)

Heh, now if that software wasn't so darn expensive, I would get it.  The FL Studio trial version looks very neat, though. :)  Thanks for the very elaborate post.

Wow, that is very nice.  I'm curious to what program you used to making the sheet music in a PDF and the midi and mp3, if you used one.  I've been searching for something like that for a very long time.

Sorry, didn't mean any offense, it's just that in previous communities I've been to, there have been little to no women active, and sometimes people make jokes about it.  (a programming community)  It's actually a good change that there's a healthy mix of people here. :)

Land Before Time TV Series (2007) / No Episode this Friday (July 6th)
« on: July 06, 2007, 07:44:57 PM »
There wasn't any episode in the time slot today, and YTV showed Pokemon instead.  The YTV site also doesn't have any episodes scheduled at the moment..  I hope it is just this week, and they have new episodes later, since there really are only 3 episodes Canada has to air until the end of the season.

Episode Discussion / Discuss: Return to Hanging Rock
« on: June 29, 2007, 04:51:16 PM »
It aired around 4 hours ago in Canada on YTV.  Here's some basic info:

Airdate (Canada): June 29th, 2007
Description: On the day of the Falling Rocks of Many Nights (meteor shower), Ruby remembers a memory of her family meeting at Hanging Rock when she lived in the Mysterious Beyond.  Ruby adventures alone to find her family, but her friends come along to help.  They meet Skip along the way, a mammal who knows the Mysterious Beyond very well, and the gang learns an important lesson of being family.
Songs: Up in the Sky (shares melody with The Lone Dinosaur), and Feel So Happy (was interrupted in the middle)

I found it weird when they interrupted the song when Redclaw and his fast biters came in.  It was quite unexpected, and I hope they don't do that again...  though I can imagine some people in this forum are already sick of the Feel So Happy song. ;P

This episode was also the first time we ever see Ruby's family not in a flashback.

Greedy? What, does she steal stones from the others?
She doesn't steal the stones from the others, but prevents the others from finding the stones (they were searching the cave for the stones).  You really have to watch it.

it shows Ducky's "darker" and more greedy side.
Ducky has a greedy side?
Yeah, I was pretty surprised at that, since they have never depicted Ducky in such a way.
