General Land Before Time / Re: LBT Marathon
« on: April 22, 2020, 05:31:50 PM »
I didn't do a marathon per se, but over the last month I've watched all 14 movies and the TV series. Haven't done this since 2016. This is the first week for me with no TLBT content. I feel kind of lost tbh.

If the 3rd Jurassic World movie a d Netflix spin-off hits it big I think they might try some tie-ins. But I am no marketing expert, so it's only a hope I have. :OhYou

You know, Netflix seems like it could be a promising outlet for the LBT franchise! Lots of other old cartoons have been getting new movies and TV shows there!

The Land Before Time is now on Netflix, not sure if all the movies or just the original one, since I'm not a subscriber, but that might be a good sign for things to come. We used to have an inside man in the forum, don't remember his nickname. Is he still around?

well, if you mean "Littlefoot with his parent - being without his friends - joining friends - travel - great valley" sequence, then well, there's some mirriring, partly.

That's what I mean. Even the part when Littlefoot and Cera fight is mirrored.

I also noticed the similarity...Littlefoot and Cera fight, and then the Gang splits up, with Littlefoot on his own and Cera leading the others. I thought that latter detail was kind of an absurd thing to rehash. (Ducky, Petrie, Spike--what on earth are you guys siding with Cera again for?? You've learned how that goes!) If there was one problem I had with XIV, it was that.
Fortunately, though, that was the only big problem I had with XIV! :Mo I enjoyed the rest of the movie enough that I was able to roll my eyes at the rehashed bit and move on. Ever since the franchise seemed to end on the disappointing note that was XIII, I'd been dreaming (sometimes literally!) about a new LBT movie happening, so finding out XIV was going to happen, anticipating its release, and finally getting my hands on it brought back all the feels for me!

I felt the same way, it was so disappointing to let it end on XIII. Too bad XIV wasn't enough to kick the franchise back up. But I believe we'll get a remake or a new tv series, even if it takes another ten years to do so.

Has anyone pointed out how this movie is in a way a reverse mirror of the original? Plotwise, of course.

I thought for years that Ali's name was spelled Ellie. Other than that I can't think of anything else. I used to watch the movies 1 through 7 every week during the summer until my VHS tapes were practically unplayable, so I'd end up clearing up any doubts I might've had.

According to this article, The Land Before Time is now streaming on Netflix. I don't know if it's only in the UK, I don't have Netflix, so can any of you confirm this?

On Amazon you can get the whole Gang of Seven from the TV Series:

@Gentle Sharptooth were these the only figures released from playmates? They didn't make a Spike and a Petrie in this line?

What offends me most is there is no OG Sharptooth Plushie! RAWR!

Now that you mention it, it is weird that they never made any sharpteeth, original sharptooth or otherwise. :thudstonk When I was little, I was stuck chasing my plush Gang of Five with generic T. rex toys...sigh.

Its a Sharpspiracy! I think the plushie makers are anti-sharpteeth! #sharpteethlivesmatter

Well, Pizza Hut made a Sharptooth hand puppet. It's quite big.

@NewOrder I don't think they're still there. They were released way back in 2007, so eBay's probably your best bet. (That's where I got my set a while back!) :DD

It would be weird if they were still being sold there twelve years later. I guess I'll have to resort to eBay, then. Too bad I didn't know these existed back in the day.

Wow. I had no idea these existed.

Are the Playmate's toys still available on Amazon? I've checked but couldn't find them.

We are all familiar with the Pizza Hut hand puppet collection that was released with the original film.

Burger King also had a six figure line including Chomper inspired by TLBT.

Besides these two are you aware of any other toy lines of our favourite characters?

General Land Before Time / Re: Why Ali wasn't in LBT 10
« on: April 06, 2020, 11:13:46 AM »
I've been on lockdown for 19 days and I've decided to rewatch the entire LBT series. Today was time for The Great Longneck Migration. It's incredible how after all these years this movie still fills my heart. It's hard to stop the tears listening to Bestest Friends.

I know this sequel has a lot of emotional points, but it still grinds my gears that they didn't find a way to include Ali in it. What about you guys? How do you think they should've included her?
Honestly, I've thought about it, and it made me realize something.

This is supposed to be a story about Littlefoot reuniting with his father, first and foremost. It may not look like it in the beginning, but ultimately, that's what this film boils down to. Without that, there's no other meaningful theme or message that can be gleaned. The whole Longneck migration/solar eclipse thing is just a complex excuse to get the two of them together, as well as a red herring/smokescreen to make the twist leave even more of an impact. (Plus, since this is the tenth LBT film, I assume the crew wanted to make this commemorative movie as special and epic as possible.)

Because of that, I think Ali's inclusion in the film would've been more of a detriment, a distraction from Littlefoot and Bron's storyline, than anything else. As much as I would've liked for Ali to be in the movie, I think it might've been for the best. For example, before I thought of this, I thought Ali could've played the role of Littlefoot's love interest here, and Shorty falls in love with her too, so he and Littlefoot strike up a rivalry over her. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how out-of-place it would seem in the overall movie. I can't imagine what kind of role Bron would've played in this scenario, how it would affect Littlefoot and Bron's relationship (whether positively or negatively), and whether it would've been beneficial or detrimental to Shorty's own character arc as the writers intended it.

There's also the issue of pacing and fulfilling time quotas for the movie. The movie needs to be 85 or so minutes, otherwise I assume it would go over-budget. How much of the film would've been sacrificed just so Ali can have a role in this? Maybe there might be a sequence or two that could be cut for her sake, but once again, this goes back to my earlier argument on how out-of-place she already would be.

With that in mind, I personally can't imagine anything that would be good for her outside of a small cameo. But that's just me, though.

Honestly, I feel like had they put her in the film, she might have served a real purpose instead of being completely forgotten. This entire film's plot was simply too boring to get excited about, and it showed especially with the level of writing. I can't be the only one to think that it was probably one of the laziest in the entire franchise. From the very start, they gave us this foreshadow that the dreams the longnecks had would play a major role, but they seemed completely okay with ditching that idea before it even had a chance to take root.

We can argue that had they put her in the film, she would've become essentially useless and merely served a side role in the grand scheme of things. However, I feel like her presence would have made the movie so much more enjoyable to watch. And the talk about Littlefoot and Shorty having a quarrel about who will eventually triumph to become her mate is just ridiculous. They're children. Love is not the first thing on their mind, especially after coming to a new place in search of answers for their peculiar dreams.

Yes, the 10th film is not the best sequel there is available, but it doesn't deserve the place of being the worst sequel overall. People's opinions are not always one, and there is nothing wrong with that. :yes

I agree that in terms of pacing and the overall plot, it would be hard to find the time or the space in the movie to fit Ali in a way that would be satisfying for the fans and that would make some sense to this sequel's main story arc.

That being said I thought about a few ways that she could be introduced. One way would be for her herd to arrive in the great valley just before the sleep stories about the eclipse began. Then the old one could be the one to tell the story about how Longnecks stopped the night circle from bringing the bright circle down upon the Earth. Littlefoot and his Grandparents would follow Ali's herd to the meteorite crash site.

Seeing Littlefoot and Ali going off on an adventure together would make Cera jealous and she and the rest of the gang would follow. The third act could still be about Littlefoot meeting Bron, with Ali falling a bit to the background.

Another way would be to have Littlefoot and the gang meet Ali as they were leaving the crash site at the end of the movie and this could serve as cliffhanger for the next movie. Instead of Invasion of the Tinysaurus we'd have something like Return to the Land of Mists with Ali having a greater roll.

PS.: I had no idea there were people who liked Rhett's character.

I can't believe it's already been 15 years. I know I haven't been as active here as I have in the past, but it's one of those places I love to return to every once in a while. Glad to see it's still up and running.

Keep up the great work guys! Happy Star Day for all of us :D

Welcome to new forum, NewOrder! Love your avatar, it reminds me last seconds of original LBT movie. :3

Glad to see someone else do hope to NOT see reboot too. (though in our last discussion you explained purpose of reboot)
Though I prefer one good-quality sequel than another season of series.

Glad to be back (:

Sad to hear it's not actually happening. I saw that we're getting a 30th anniversary playset with 5 movies.

It's at $19,99 on Amazon. Maybe just a quick cash grab, but who knows, it might be a sign of things to come.

This is great news. Hope we're getting new sequels or at least a new tv series. I just hope it's not a reboot.

The new forum looks great, had a bit of a hard time finding it on google though.

I am not really a fan of reboots, but if we want new people to join our fandom, maybe it would do The Land Before Time well to reboot the whole thing and update it to current audiences.
little question: why reboot if we just can have a direct continuation with the same result - with a little bit (not so much) grown up characters and more serious atmosphere and problems?..
The reboot would be important to try and bring new fans into the franchise. As much as we love the original movie, it has its flaws, and today's audience just isn't going to fall for it as hard as we did. Some might, but not a lot of people.

Continuing the franchise into a different direction is my favourite option, however, it would be something done to please fans like us. It wouldn't generate enough revenue for Universal to support it as a long lasting franchise.

I fear that TLBT has had its moment and that, sadly, we won't be seeing anything new in the near future.

We will probably get something TLBT related in the future, it's inevitable. But this time, we might have to wait a bit more than 9 years.

General Land Before Time / Why is this so rare?
« on: October 23, 2017, 07:04:42 PM »
We are a small comunity but a very tight one. I've met a few people throughout my life who have been TLBT fans, most of them only watched the original movie and maybe one or two sequels.

I guess the problem with this franchise is that it's targeted towards a very young audience, so most fans eventually grow out of it. Since, it's sort of a niche franchise, it doesn't attract a lot of fans in the first place, so the amount of people who keep on loving it throughout their adult life diminishes through time.

It also doesn't help that in the last ten years all we got was Journey of the Brave.

I am not really a fan of reboots, but if we want new people to join our fandom, maybe it would do The Land Before Time well to reboot the whole thing and update it to current audiences.

General Land Before Time / Do You Ever Wonder Why?
« on: September 17, 2017, 11:54:03 AM »
There was a complete box set? I own a box set of the TV Series released probably around 2008/09, that had four discs each one with 4 episodes. So I'm currently missing 10 episodes of the TV series.

The series basically tried to pack hour long stories into 20 minute episodes. It felt like it would have a thread to tie in all the episodes together, but it was never shown. We've yet to know how Chomper and Ruby came to the Great Valley, and why did the elders let them stay.

It was one giant mess. It also didn't help that they've tried to appeal to a younger audience than the movies.

For me, the worst thing they did with the TV series was how they botched Ali's return. I waited for that moment for over 10 years, only to be extremely disappointed.
