I was given the title "restorer of the world" by the legislature of my time, and I was responsible for the ruination of a great Syrian city, and the defeat of a powerful queen. Who am I?

Correct! Aurelian twice attacked the city of Palmyra, and brought Queen Zenobia back in chains the first time, and when the city revolted again, he razed it to the ground. Although future emperors would make some minor attempts to rebuild the city, it would fall into ruin before long.

Palmyra was a major Syrian city, ruled by Rome but in many ways autonomous, given how far it was from the center of imperial power. It's culture was a blend of Roman, Syrian, Greek, and other cultures, and was perhaps the greatest camel caravan city of the world to that point in time.

After the death of Marcus Aurelius, the last truly "great" classical emperor (who killed Christians in large numbers  <_< ) the Roman Empire fell into a prolonged state of internal conflict, on and off... this led to a MAJOR series of wars which split the Roman Empire into three pieces; the Gallic Empire in the West (what is now France, Britain, the Iberian Peninsula, Belgium, and parts of Germany) the Roman Empire itself in the center (Italy, Greece, the Balkans, most of North Africa, parts of Asia Minor), and the Palmyrine Empire (Syria, parts of Asia Minor, most of today's Jordan,  Egypt, and Israel/Palastine.)

Palmyra was later remade as the small city of "Tadmor", but even this declined and fell into ruins many centuries later...

Aurelian managed to reunite the empire, but did tremendous damage to it in the process. He also built the Aurelian walls which to this day partially surround the city of Rome. I used some of the ruins of Palmyra in my Fantasy Role-playing game...

Anyway, now that that lengthy exposition is done, it is your turn, Serris.

The  banned organochlorine insecticide Dieldrin is named after me. I co-discoverered the reaction that bears both my and my fellow chemist's name. I along with my fellow chemist won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1950 for my work.

Correct.

There are actually two banned organochlorine insecticides named for the two: aldrin and dieldrin. Both were banned due to their persistence in the environment.

I am a man who was a scientist, but also believed in alchemical spirits, based off of the model of the Greek philosopher-scientist Empedocles. I was also known for my work in poisons. Who am I?

Got it. Paracelsus, an Austrian, was the chemist. Some call him the father of modern chemistry, but that title usually goes to Lavosier.

Your turn, Serris.

Yeah, the poisons bit tipped me off. I have an interest in toxicology. I cannot remember the exact quote but it was he who said that dose makes the poison.

I am a German scientist usually given credit for recognizing the insecticidal properties of organophosphorous esters (OPs). I worked at the German chemical company I.G. Farben. I patented the first OP, tetraethylpyrophosphate (TEPP) in 1937.
