Well, I'm a pure Ruby fan. In my blood! B) So yeah, you will get more fanfic of her made by me!
Hitherto eh? That's no good... Well, least she has one follower in me! :P:
Thing is, I draw the orginal pic by hand, fill the lines with ink pencil and then scan it.
Then I open it in photoshop6.0 and fill the black lines once more.
Finally I colour it.
I can't paint in P-shop, but I tend to learn. I do better by hand so far.

THIS TIME, I made it whole from scratch!

I'm VERY proud of this picture, mostly because of 90% of it is made from scratch!
And that I think that I kinda managed to get the shadows...sorta good looking.
The only thing I don't like is her left hand, but I might edit it. I have some plans.

One thing I do wanna learn, is to paint it in a way so that the black lines gets thiner, and more precise. As you can see, they are quite thick and not so precise.
I think these pic would look quite better if so, and my drawing skills improve with it! :^.^: Any ideas?

This is what I'll do now, I still have the orginals, so I take one of them, scan it, and then use this Paint technique! We'll see how it works out! :^.^:

Keep the originals in a safe place. That way you can scan in and experiment and learn as well as trying out new things. Maybe next time you scan in some originals if you have a place to keep them you can have a unaltered scan and can copy it into another folder for your experiments and trying out new techniques.

Oh brother...
I've been working all afternoon with this picture!
First I made a sketch in MS Paint, then filled it with lines.
Thing is now, I have to carefully use the eraser tool to remove the sketch lines!
I used a few tricks, and finaly, after many hours work, the lineart is done.
It looks perfect... MARVELOUS!!!!
Now, I gonna color it, I'll try some highlight functions as well, hopefully it will come out well. (I won't post it untill I'm okay with it).
This posture is soo cute! :wub:
Ok, my arm hurts like crazy, but it's worth it! I'm having real fun! :^.^:

One idea maybe to put in something that may be why she's crying, or if that happened before the picture takes place. The someone she is looking at could be off the drawing so perhaps no need to draw that.
You may try to pick some stuff that you find not to difficult to draw as far as background stuff. I'm not sure what that would be, rocks, some water, trees in the distance, ect.

Well, that little tear is just there becasue she has just stopped crying, and is about to get happy again! :^.^: And cause I wanted it to give some more details to the picture.
I have no idea at ALL to draw backgrounds, and how do I draw trees???
I'll check around you other guys artwork, see if I can get some inspiration.

A BIG factor that I lack is that I don't have Photoshop CS2-3...
Which means, NO grass brush tool! :angry:
But now I think I have an idea for a background...
I just need to make the image smaller first, without ruin the lines and structure...

Maybe get an idea from a scene in a picture, book cover, or other source. Depending what is easy to draw, sand, rocks, water, other things.

I can't draw a whole field in the background, since this picture's a "closeup", meaning Ruby takes up alot of space.
I think, maybe she would be siting in the nest... in a lushy, bush area...
With palm tree leaves over her head, and treestars on the ground...
But, I dunno...

No hurry, take your time. Maybe the next picture you draw could be what Ruby is looking at to make her laugh, when you get around to drawing it. Again, no hurry.

Or really, I could just do a "flashy" background that looks nice and don't have any enviroments or anything.

No way there is no "grass" brush in P-Shop. There must be at least two (I'm using P-Shop 7.0) but you can download brushes on the net. Just try googling. =)

Hehe, Photoshop CS isn't that much difference to the older versions to me.
But it's esier to use, easier to maneuver and has the brushes I want! :lol:
Now, the latest drawing'll be up soon enough, and I started to draw some new ones.
Other characters this time, Littlefoot for example.
I use screenshots to get the touch of angles etc, and practise on drawing differnet face profiles and emotions.
If you want, I can put them up, but they're really mainly for my own practise. :^.^: I gotta start somewhere you know.
Right now, I must stay home because of a surgery, so I get lots of time to draw! :P:

Well, for first pics you do about Littlefoot, they are very impressive because you did it this well in no time at all, if you keep this practice you'll make more and more accurate pics in a small ammount of time.

If you think Ducky is the hardest to draw, then I suggest you do it at last, so you can get more practice with the other characters and with the LBT-style of drawings, so Ducky will not be as hard as you thought it should be :DD .

small quick sketches can help with your drawing skill too. Since you are not paying attention to details with quick small sketches you can try out different poses, angles and so on & it doesn't take up much time or room.

This is the news from York Broadcast! :lol:
I've solved a HUGE problem with my drawings, see?
Before, I used the eraser tool in photoshop to get rid of my sketch lines...
Took ages, and annoyed me to the limit of madness!
It also made the lines blurry... <_<
But now I've solved it!
With two mouse clicks the skecth lines are gone! And the lineart ready to color!
This is done by playing around some with the color levels!
I was soo happy about this that I ran to my lake and screamed out load! :lol:
With pencils in my nostrills :lol: , music in my ears, and paper on the table, I carry on! :^.^:

I'm still having some minor problems though.
One of them is that my drawings may look good here, but if I should use on my desktop... they look bad.
And I think I'm lost, cause the picture's VERY big (not in size, but in dimensions).
Like, I scan a skecth, open it in paint, zoom it to 400 %, do my work with it, and it looks fine in the picture viewer programs. But not on my desktop, and if I zoom it back out again, to 40% (orginal size) it looks bad too.
What to do mateys? What to do?
Oh by the way, I've just finished another creature for my upcoming drawing!
This drawing will contain alot of differnt postures and characters, be on the lookout!

That is an idea. You can pm him. If you do it may be best to give him as much information as possible that you think may be important, symptoms, programs maybe, ect.

It sounds to me, like the aspect ratio of the picture may be off somewhat, as relates to your desktop... Hopefully Austin can help you out with that!

I have a few ideas, maybe none any good. Maybe a picture of what was making Ruby about to laugh in one of your earlier pictures. Or some drawings of your favorite scenes from movies and tv episodes. Some of your favorite characters with their friends & families. Some of various characters with their friends and or families.

Maybe try to copy/imitate Mati Klarwein's gatefold cover for "B****es Brew!" ...Hmm... Kinda afraid to post a link to the screenshot though, because, in the link, "B****es" is uncensored...
EDIT: Ehh, I have a picture of it on my current desktop; I shortened the filename... It's in that thread; posting it here would, in my opinion, detract from this topic, which is Gustav's work...

Hmm... Maybe... I was just thinking of drawing an "improvised" version of the gatefold, since, ya know, Jazz is a lot about improvisation! So, my attempt cannot "fail," per se, as there is less of a "definition" about success vs failure, within the ideals of Jazz... It's kind of a story, yes... Yeah... I get images in my head, but I'm gonna try to imitate that particular gatefold first...

Due to the different color and marking your character is not going to be confused with Ruby.
In my recent experimenting with photoshop the burn tool has been very helpful in creating shadow and while the Dodge tool worked out for lights. The main problem for me is to keep the surface of a shadow or light even; smudge- and blurtool were helpful with that.
Which tips could you give Littlefoot?

All we have to go on for male and females of Ruby's kind are her family, which the males are blue and the females pink, though likely other colors may be present, maybe with females being brighter colors and males darker colors.
To bad they didn't decide to be more consistent with say only females having eyelashes, though would have helped, but to late now to do that.

The male / female difference is very difficult. It is very hard to draw LBT characters without leaving any doubt about the gender. If you look at a character and try to blend out anything you know about the voice and everything you know about LBT would it be possible to be certain about everybody's gender? Ducky has been referred to as "he" even in official sources (a book and an audio play).
Maybe this is not a big surprise as all of the characters are children and may therefore not look as unambiguous as their grownup counterparts do (little doubt for example about Tria while by just looking at Cera I don't know if we could be certain about her gender if we had never seen an LBT movie).

I guess that the only male Oviraptor we can refeer to right now, is Ruby's father.
Who only shows up in certain episodes from the Tv-series.
Then, Ruby has two younger siblings, one of them is a boy right?
But it's hard to tell who. :rolleyes: Besides, they're both alot younger than Ruby.
I think I shall do some observations and studies on this, then maybe I can develop more drawings that clearly shows the gender.

If I recall correctly each of her sibblings are likely of each gender, a younger brother and sister since one is pink and one blue. Though since dinos, like some reptiles, it is not unusual to find it difficult to tell one gender from the other if one is not an expert.

The one thing that came to my mind today (while working on a Chomper drawing) about how they indicate gender of young characters in some (not all) cases is by giving the guys a more pronounced Laryngeal prominence. You did indicate that one in your drawing of course.

Now for the difficult part... Chomper.
I've never drawn this fellow before, and he sure isn't easy (if I look on my rough sketches. :rolleyes: )
There might be some trouble with the dimensions of them both, but I think I could edit that with Photoshop...
It's hard now, but I know that when the sketching is done, and the coloring begins, it will be wild! :^.^:

I"m not sure if you have any episodes of the tv series or movies that Chomper is in, but you could maybe use some lbt movies that have full grown t-rexes in them for some ideas of Chomper poses, though they are full grown and not young like he is.

I like the picture. It is quite nice and don't feel bad about having no backgrounds. Instead you could say you are working on the character portraits and drawings till you are happy with your skill level at drawing the characters in different angles, positions, ect. Then once you are satisfied with your skill level, then you'll work on your background drawing skill. That is more positive and some people may prefer to work on their drawing skill that way, focusing on one thing at a time instead of trying to improve all the different skills at the same time.

I notice you put in a "starlight" in the eyes of your characters. How do you create that "starlight"? I would like to use it for stars in pictures.
I'm not 100% sure it is a good idea to use the starlight in the characters eyes in addition to the flashlight of the pupils.

Not like Ruby's reproductive organs were attached to her back or something. I think that this picture is so clear in showing NO sexual content that such an interpretation is more a matter of the viewer's mind than of the picture itself (no offense meant) -_-
One thing I realize is that perhaps the size ratio between the characters is not quite correct. I think Chomper would have to be a little larger. I think if they both stand side by side Chomper's head would be roughly on the level of Ruby's back. It would also give more justification to Ruby's unwillingness to carry Chomper (too heavy).

That is what I assumed, Chomper wanted to either be carried since he is tired, or for some fun, some kids may still ride their older siblings or parents, not sure if young kids do that anymore, but Ruby is unsure since Chomper is a bit large compared to her and she may be thinking he's to heavy to be carried like that. I never assumed the other more adult thing that some seem to have thought.

As for constructive criticism, I hate to say it because you pointed this very point out as something you like, but there is something about the shadows. It would be difficult for me to tell from where the light is coming in the picture for there are some darker and some brighter spots on most parts of the characters' bodies, but in some spots there is light respectively shadow in spots where (judging from the shading of other parts) there ought to be the respective other thing. Really, please, please don't get me wrong. I do like the picture, I just hope to help improving your work same as I hope others will help me to improve mine.

Mainly, the reason I use it is to make my drawings look more alive. They look quite stiff with just lineart and color.
I just have to continue practising, but as it looks now, I really don't want any more drawing jobs. School's starting again, last week at work, I have RP's to attend to (to many if you ask me), and things at home. I really don't need more.
A neat thing could be drawing on the laptop, on the way back and home from school. :P:

Nice drawing, and a good idea to try different poses instead of the more usual static poses many artists stick with. Practice will help you to get better. Maybe quick sketches done now and then for practice only will help you get in more practice rather then doing only finished drawings.

Is Blueberry of the same age as the gang? If you draw her into this posture I'm quite sure that you have a story in mind to which that picture is linked?
As for the hopefully constructive criticism I think the "hunchback" which you mentioned could be mended by turning the back into a somewhat wider bow and let it make it one line with the tail rather than letting the back disappear beyond Blueberry's thigh. The expression is just excellent Gustav :yes
Have you thought of making a version of this drawing with a complete background landscape? I'm sure that would look marvelous.

Can't offer any suggestions to have him look more male. He looks similar on coloration to Ruby's father.
For those who may not have seen the tv series to refer to you can see Ruby's father (and her family though her siblings are not as clearly seen) at a screenshot at: http://landbeforetime.wikia.com/wiki/Image..._%26_Family.jpg (http://landbeforetime.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Ruby_%26_Family.jpg)
Her father's head fin (or whatever you call that) is a bit larger then her mothers and slightly differently shaped. Though you could not tell since in Littlefot's picture his character's head is almost straight on shot so at that angle the exact size and shape would not be clearly shaped, and also the head fin may have some individual shape and size differences so all adult females fast runners may not have head fins of the same exact shape and size as Ruby's mother, nor males the same exact size & shape as Ruby's father, since we've seen only 5 fast runners I think, 3 of them not adults yet and only 2 being adults 1 of each gender. We've not seen a lot of them so really can't tell if there are more then 2 colors, with all female fast runners being pink, and all males blue, or if there are other colors.
In general most of the dino males seem to be darker then most females, and the shade of Ruby's father and Blueberry are darker then a female blue dino, in my opinion at least. This is a longer post then I usually do or like doing.
With dinos the problem is there is no bumps on the chest or other ways to tell apart from the voice, and that males tend to be darker then females. They are inconsistent as to eyelashes, to bad since that could have been another way to easily tell.

It looks good and looks to me, a non expert, like good attention to detail. Maybe the head and neck picture would make a good avatar. & no need to fuss about your char not always looking exactly the same. If it is hand drawn a char will be a bit different even if you are not intentionally doing it I would assume, including I bet the hand drawn characters from various animated movies and tv series. There may well be slight differences that most would not notice or overlook.

I notice for once you left out your "sparkling eye signature". Nothing against your style, but I think in case of this picture it comes across better without the sparkling effect.
And if someone's sitting on tips on how to draw backgrounds... I hope that person share his/her secret!
Not too much of a secret there I think. Think of a landscape and draw it. Skies are getting lighter (may actually turn white) towards the horizon (same goes for large water surfaces). Also it often gives a realistic touch if colors of distant objects are not too strong. Photoshop offers many tools suitable to create structures like leaves, grass, or rough, rocky surfaces. Do you have any particular questions about backgrounds?

Great Guido picture & expression.
You can do what some have done and use pictures of landscapes as background for your drawings, or try drawing over some landscape pictures in a sort of rotoscope type, though you could leave some things out, no need to trace everything if you don't want to. Some rocks could be left out, a tree here and there, ect.

Chomper and Guido for sure, but I don't know anything about Duncan or the Total Drama series... If Duncan's a human, it might be hard, since I have little experience in drawing humans... :unsure:
