Saurus Rock: Member Hall of Fame / GOF Awards 2015 - Voting Status
« on: August 12, 2015, 06:57:16 AM »
Hey gang!

It's voting time again and as usual the voting status page is here to help you keep track of your votes (just wondering how may times I could get the word "vote" into one sentence...)

Just to recap, this is how it works. Firstly, you have to have cleared the following criteria:

1. You have a minimum post count of 100 posts.
2. You have been a member of the GOF for a minimum of 3 months
3. You have contributed to the GOF posts and threads within the last 3 months.

Got that covered? Wicked...moving on. Your name below will be highlighted in a particular colour depending on the number of posts you have made or if something requires your attention. Here's a key showing what each of the colours mean:

RED means you haven't cast any votes yet. So...get to it when you can.
YELLOW means one of two things. Either 1. you have not cast enough votes to receive any awards or 2. there is something that you may or may not have done that is preventing you from receiving any awards you might have coming. Sidenotes will go alongside these issues so you know exactly what is it you need to do to grant you rightful passage to your awards.
GREEN means you're in the clear. Your votes have been counted and all conditions have been met. Any winnings owed will be coming your way.
GREY/GRAY (spelling dependent on your current location in the world biggrin.gif ) indicates any other conditions or indications that lie outside of your voting status (E.g. if you wish to be removed from the voting list or have a particular circumstance that has been discussed with admin exempting you from standard rulings for voting). These will also be accompanied with sidenotes explaining the situation.

***Some extra things to be aware of!***

Updates
We are all busy people and from various countries of the world (one side sleeping whilst the other is awaking). That being said, updates will be time stamped as and when they occur. So if your status still reads RED when you know you have cast all votes, be patient and you'll find your status marked GREEN in no time.

Skipping Votes
Next...skipping votes. If you plan on skipping a vote for a particular category, please make sure you mention this IN YOUR POST!! when voting. I will NOT openly assume that just because you haven't nominated someone for a particular category that you are choosing to skip said category. If you are skipping a category, say that you are skipping that category. Otherwise, you may find that your status may not move off YELLOW despite you thinking that you have made all your nominations.

ALSO - please, please, PLEASE! DO NOT EDIT OLD POSTS!!! Editting old posts confuses the process. sad.gif If you make a mistake or need to make a correction, put it into a new post. Believe it or not, this is FAR more helpful than editting an old post. Still confused? Just take my word for it. If nothing else, you are doing me a favour and I thank you in advance! wink.gif

REMEMBER - you can only skip a maximum of TWO (2) votes and still remain eligible for an award. If you do skip two categories, you must vote in the Appreciated Member Award in order to remain eligible for your awards. You need a minimum grand total of 6 votes in order to receive awards. So that's either 6 out of 7 main category votes OR 5 main category PLUS a vote for the Appreciated Member category (when voting for the Appreciated Member opens).

OK guys! Thanks for getting through all that. Below is the status list for all listed members in this year's GOF Member Awards. Any issues please don't hesitate to get in touch with either myself or any other admin. Cheers and happy voting biggrin.gif

Gamers Zone / Alien: Isolation
« on: November 25, 2014, 05:06:16 PM »
Hey gang!

This is old news by now but I thought I'd just throw it out there. Has anyone played through, or at least attempted to play, Alien: Isolation? I've only just managed to finish the main campaign and I've got to say, it was a ride well worth taking. I did run a brief stream of me playing the now notorious "Medical Bay Area" of the game and much to the hilarity of the people watching, and guiding me with the odd tip or two when I got lost, I think it was enjoyed.

Given the general concensus of... that other Aliens game... I have to say this is a game that I found most enjoyable when it was punishing me for not thinking things through. The number of times I got NOM'd by the alien was embarrassing but the tension created by sulking around praying that this sodding thing won't suddenly 180 on you as you sneaking past the door it had just entered was palpable. And knowing that the alien was programmed to be "unpredictable" brought me NO comfort whatsoever! (I doubt it was meant to but still...). I have to say that this has been the first game in a long time that has genuinely snagged and withheld my attention unlike so many others that seem more like fleeting fancies. I wanna do some more streams on this, despite having finished the game, because I loved the creepy atmosphere and the tension the game created.

But, anyway, I ramble. Has anyone else had the gaul to give this one a go? Let's here your stories here...

Gamers Zone / Video Game Streaming
« on: October 18, 2014, 08:06:05 AM »
Hey gamers!

It's nothing new but just figured I ask if anyone's big on things like E-sports, Live Streams, Let's Plays, Twitch TV, UStream etc.? I've only just been dabbling in and out of it recently but it seems rather entertaining.

I've signed up with Twitch.tv not too long ago and, in case you weren't aware, our very own Mumbling has her own Twitch Channel whereby you can watch live streams of the games she plays. I'm a particular fan of her Binding of Isaac videos (such a twisted game to watch but great fun to play). Look her up on Twitch under the name "claydoodles".

On that note, does anyone else do "Let's Play"s or Live Streaming? Since I've acquired my PS4, I've been watching others playing on the "Live on Playstation" Twitch and UStream. Particular hilarity to be had when people are playing creepy games like P.T and the recent releases of Alien: Isolation and The Evil Within watching grown men and women whine and squeal like infants. I've even considered doing a bit of live streaming myself but not really sure on what to do or say. Will be giving it a shot with the school autumn holidays coming up since I'll have some time off work. I just landed Alien: Isolation so might give the world a laugh by screaming and swearing profusely. If you fancy it, my twitch ID is "kokapetl1616".

So what about you guys? You into streaming either watching or playing yourself?

Gamers Zone / HD Remakes
« on: March 26, 2014, 07:02:47 PM »
Hey guys!

This is an old argument that's been around gaming communities for something close to an ice age now, but I'm interested to see what the gamers of the GOF have to say about it all.

Are HD remakes and HD re-releases of games from previous systems worth buying?

Now, a number of you are probably prepping to throw a back fist at me for suggesting such a hypocritical statement seeing as I'm a bit of a sucker for HD remakes/re-releases (especially since I just picked up Final Fanatsy X/X-2 HD Remaster last week and haven't put it down since :oops). This is also coming from the guy who bought Resident Evil 4 three times! (On Gamecube, PS2 and on Wii...another tale for another time...) but it is just interesting to know where others stand with this point. That and I can't stand the fratboys and trolls on gaming websites to post in comment sections, would rather talk to people I can get a proper response from rather than  "FIRST" or "Cooking Mama > COD" or some such crap nuggets :p

From my point of view, as if it were not obvious already, I have a bit of a weakness for them. For me, it's not the HD rescaling or remodelling of scenes, characters etc that does it for me. It's the ability to dive back into a game I know I've tried and like or loved from a gaming era gone by. I've picked up titles like God of War Collections, Devil May Cry HD Collection, Sega Megadrive Ultimate Collection, Silent Hill HD Collection, Metal Gear Solid Collection, Zone of the Enders Collection, Kingdom Heart 1.5 HD Remix (God damn it Square Enix! Why you gotta come up with such stupidly long-winded names for remakes!) amongst others. I've also played the ICO/Shadows of the Colossus HD Remake and seen Ratchet and Clank Collections, Jak and Daxter HD Collections among others. Now, common sense would say, I've played these games and I've already have them on previous consoles, so why the hell would I need to fork out of the same game again just to play it on my most recent machine?! Logic would say, I shouldn't. Even with the promise of additional content or extra modes/features etc. if I already own, have played and finished the game, why should I be buying it again at full retail price X amount of years later?

I suppose I can almost answer my own question in the sense that I'm a sucker for nostalgia but I'd say that that is more of an age thing. Being a kid growing up with the mainstream of games in the 80s and 90s, I'm always happy to pick up an old game and go "Wow! Haven't play this is a while!" and go back to it for a time. I must have started Final Fantasy 7 over from the start about 4 times in a year coz of that nostalgic twinge I get every now and again. I don't play it through to completion by any means but just replaying that opening hours of the game I genuinely found quite satisfying.

As another point to mention, working in a school, I despair at kids going on about the latest COD or Assassin's Creed or any brain cell erosion game whose goal is to "shoot the other dude in the face" and revelling in that and sneering at games like Super Mario, Zelda, Sonic and Ratchet and Clank and dismissing them as games that "look too easy" or " are too kiddy". Now I'd wager if they put their grim, grey shooters down for a sec and actually played something like DK Country (SNES or Returns), they'd probably get their arses kicked coz they underestimate the sense of challenge and the ingenuity that these games possess from testing your skills. I run the risk of falling into a completely different argument here so I'll try to stay on track, these re-releases (I appreciate that there is a technical difference between a remake and a re-release but just go with it for now...) also help to show younger generations of gamers what games were like way back when. I'm currently running a project with a friend of mine in a school playing games from the 90s and educating kids at the same time about how games used to be and how they have developed now and their appreciation for these games has shown in droves. I also granted gamers the chance to experience games from a gaming generation they may have missed, even me. I'm still in two minds about playing Sly Cooper even thought I saw it for PS2 years ago and the PS3 collection is a nice incentive to experience what I may have missed.

So, apologises for the essay guys but I'd be interested to hear what you think. HD remakes/re-releases? Good idea or bad idea? And do you tend to go for them?

Gamers Zone / Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
« on: August 30, 2013, 05:23:40 PM »
Hey guys!

Anyone thinking of or currently playing Final Fantasy XIV? I just landed it on PS3 myself and I'm looking for anyone who's willing to buddy up. It's currently swamped under the weight of new players (as any new MMO would be I suppose) and as it turned out, all the European and N. American servers are full. I haven't dedicated my character to a server yet but I'm willing. Apparently, for the time being, once you are linked to a "world" (i.e. server) you are locked in and can't jump to another one.

Now, I'm new to the world of MMORPGs (I've never touched WoW or Starcraft or anything even remotely like it) so this is a step in the dark for me. I figured, I'm a fan of Final Fantasy and I've been too chicken to jump into something as widely established as WoW so A Realm Reborn seemed to be the logical opportunity to dive in.

I thought, if there is enough of a buzz, this page could be used to communicate as we play but obviously that is purely dependent on if anyone is actually playing the game.

So, if anyone's already immersed in the realm of Eorzea, feel free to drop your convos, tips, advice etc. here. ;)

If the topic description confused the heck outta ya then don't worry. Basically, this thread keeps tabs on the current scoring for each nomination in each category. Wanna see where you rank so far? Wanna see who's top of the table? Look no further! (err... unless you need to scroll down a bit :p ).

Anyway, as with the Voting Status page, I'll update this thread as and when I can so don't panic if scores aren't wholly accurate when you check here. I'll time stamp the page once I've made the necessary updates.

All the best everyone! :D

Saurus Rock: Member Hall of Fame / GOF Awards 2013 Voting Status
« on: August 09, 2013, 08:19:06 AM »
Hey gang!

Glad to see the forum awards up and running again! :D As status checker and score keeper again this year, here is a breakdown of how this page operates.

For those of you who don't know how this voting spiel goes down, this thread shows you your voting status. I.e. it incidates how many votes you have made and if you are in the clear to receive any awards you may have coming your way. The system is simple. Firstly, you have to have cleared the following criteria:

1. You have a minimum post count of 100 posts.
2. You have been a member of the GOF for a minimum of 3 months
3. You have contributed to the GOF posts and threads within the last 3 months.

If you have any questions, please don't hesistate to ask. Similarly, check out the rules thread by clicking here.

Once you've cleared that hurdle, your name below will be highlighted in a particular colour depending on the number of posts you have made or if something requires your attention. Here's a key showing what each of the colours mean:

RED means you haven't cast any votes yet (friendly suggestion: get your rear in gear and start voting! :lol)
GREEN means you can kick back. You're in the clear! All necessary votes and conditions have been met and you can receive any awards any members have nominated you for. Well done!
GREY/GRAY (spelling dependent on your current location in the world :D ) indicates any other conditions or indications that lie outside of your voting status (E.g. if you wish to be removed from the voting list or have a particular circumstance that has been discussed with admin exempting you from standard rulings for voting). These will also be accompanied with sidenotes explaining the situation.

***Some extra things to be aware of!***

Updates
Please bear in mind that this is an international forum and people's time zone differ. Having said that, if your status has not been updated immediately after posting, please don't assume that something's wrong. It's more likely the case that I haven't logged on yet but I promise you, come hell or high water, I will make sure that voting statuses are updated when I can. So if your status reads RED but you know that you have cast all your votes, bear with me and I will ensure you are promoted to GREEN status as soon as possible. Updates are time stamped at the top and bottom of the Status List so you can see when I last updated the thread.

:( If you make a mistake or need to make a correction, put it into a new post. Believe it or not, this is FAR more helpful than editting an old post. Still confused? Just take my word for it. If nothing else, you are doing me a favour and I thank you in advance! ;)

Cheers and happy voting :D

The Party Room / The Celebrity Name Game
« on: July 10, 2013, 06:43:03 PM »
Hey Gang!

This is actually a drinking game that I always play with a couple of friends of mine whenever we meet up so figured it can be played here to (just minus the downing of your beverage if you fail to come up with something :DD ).

Here's how it works:

One person starts by naming a celebrity or famous person (dead or alive). For example:

Elijah Wood

Now, the next person to post needs to come up with a different person whose FIRST name begins with the FIRST LETTER of the previous post's LAST NAME. Here's how:

Post 1 --> Elijah Wood (so the next post would have to come up with a person whose first name starts with "W")
Post 2 --> William Shatner (so the following post would have to start with "S")

You follow? There are some special rules to the game and they are as follows:

1). If you come up with a person whose first name and last name are BOTH the same letter e.g. Stephen Spielberg, the drinking rules version is that the player before the double letter suggestion needs to go again.

E.g. Littlefoot1616 --> Martin Short
Malte279 --> Stephen Spielberg
Littlefoot1616 --> (new person beginning with S)

Not really sure if we can enforce this rule via an online forum so say the person who needs to go again doesn't reply for 24 hours, anyone can hop in to continue the game

2). It is possible to DOUBLE BOUNCE a post! E.g. (Malte279) "Stephen Spielberg" ---> (LF1616) Sharon Stone ---> (goes back to Malte279)

3). Repetitions do not count! So check your suggestion hasn't already been given!

4). If a player suggests someone who does not have a second name E.g. Madonna, the next player takes the last letter of the name to continue i.e. in this case "A"

5). For the first round or so, we'll keep it to REAL people (so NO fictional characters)

6). For clarity's sake, stick a tag alongside your suggestion just so we know the person you've said actually does (or did) exist. E.g. movies they've starred in, their band name, a song they sung, a book they wrote etc.

Sound like fun? If nothing else, let's see how far we can take the list before it dries out. I'll kick start us off with an LBT actor no less:

Thomas Dekker (Land Before Time 5-9)

Gamers Zone / Violence in Video Games
« on: January 16, 2013, 05:04:04 PM »
Hey guys!

Whether you're a gamer or not, there is a grand scrutiny about whether or not the violent content of 18/M rated (and sometimes ratings below it) is actively contributing to the violent nature of these psychopathic "individuals" who are running around inflicting horrific acts against others. Of course, the most recent shooting is still at the forefront of people's minds and damnation from organisations such as the NRA and various politicians are still pegging these atrocities on influences brought on by video games. I read today that the Obama Administration is looking at investing $500 million into a thorough investigation (yes... again...) into the infliction of violent games on the minds of today's youthful minds. I've been seen various game website and blogs talking about violent games and violent behaviour in children, so I was wondering what the GOF's take on all this is. What do you make of all this chatter that "violent video games are creating the next batch of murderers, psychopaths and general madmen to wander our streets"? Do you yourself indulge in a bit of violent fantasy and what effect (if any) do you feel it has on you? Contribute below and let's see what the gaming (and non-gaming) communities of this forum have to say.

Saurus Rock: Member Hall of Fame / GOF Awards 2012 - Voting Status
« on: September 10, 2012, 01:37:35 PM »
Hey Gang!

Here is the register of all the eligible candidates for the 2012 GOF Membership Awards. All the members listed below have fulfilled the following criteria between the start of the year and when the voting process is due to begin; making them eligible to receive any of the announced awards:

1. Have a post count of at least 100 posts
2. Have actively posted on the GOF within the past 3 months
3. Have been a member of the GOF for at least 3 months

Please make sure you have read over ALL the rules for posting in the GOF 2012 Awards!

Colour coding system makes it super easy to find out the number of votes you've cast and if there are any issues to bring to your attention. Here's how it works!
RED means that you have not begun to vote or have yet to cast any votes (small hint: might wanna get to it if you're in this colour!)
YELLOW means that either you have not cast enough votes to qualify for an award or there is an outstanding condition you have not met. These will be written as sidenotes next to your name explaining what you still have yet to do.
GREEN means you have completed your votes and are eligible for any awards you may have been nominated for.
GREY/GRAY indicates miscellaneous conditions that will be explained in sidenotes next to your name.

Status will be updated regularly so don't panic if your status reads wrong immediately. I probably just haven't gotten around to checking over new votes but I promise you I'll update when I can and make sure status is kept accurate.

PLEASE NOTE: - If you wish to skip a vote for a specific category, PLEASE STATE THAT YOU ARE SKIPPING. I will NOT openly assume that just because you do not vote in a category that you are skipping it. Your status will remain YELLOW unless you specifically say "I am skipping this category". Make sure you let me know what categories you are skipping people! Post them in NEW POSTS in the VOTING PAGE!

REMEMBER: You need to cast at least 6 out of 7 votes to gain GREEN status with no more than 2 skips. So that means if you skip 2 categories in the main voting, you MUST vote in the Appreciated Member category so you bring your total vote count up to the required minimum of 6 votes! Thanks in advance guys!

***NOTICE TO ALL!*** Don't forget that voting has now been EXTENDED until Tuesday 2nd October! Make sure you get your votes in and your voice heard! :D

VOTING FOR CATEGORIES IS NOW CLOSED!! Please make sure you double check your status for any outstanding messages!

Voting for the Appreciated Member Award is NOW OPEN!! and will continue until MIDNIGHT on 12th October (forum standard time) All those with only FIVE VOTES (yellow status with sidenotes), you MUST vote in the Appreciated Member in order to get any awards you may have obtained from the main categories. If you don't, you will not be eligible to receive your award! Please don't let that happen!

Gamers Zone / Co-op or Competitive Multiplayer?
« on: May 10, 2012, 01:10:49 PM »
Hey gamers!

Just another pointless thought that passed my mind and figured I'd open the floodgates to the GoF gaming community. When (if) you play multiplayer for games, do you prefer to play co-operatively with a partner or competitively (in a team or otherwise) against other human players? If so, any given reason as to why you prefer one over the other. Maybe you don't like multiplayer games at all and choose to avoid them. Either way, would be great to hear your T&Vs on the subject.

For the record, I've always preferred co-op games rather than competitive games. I play Resi 5 constantly because I just like the feel of you and you partner against the world and helping each other to survive. Granted you can get some numpties who don't know what they are doing and things can go to pot (e.g. the infamous Leroy Jenkins incident. If you haven't seen this YouTube video I suggest you check it out. Awesome comical value! :lol ), but I've always liked helping others out and working together to overcome the challenges the game throws at you.

Over to you guys! Whad'dya think? ;)

Gamers Zone / GAME in admin!
« on: March 27, 2012, 11:25:10 AM »
Any gamer in the UK will have heard the news that the country's largest VG retailer is officially tagged as "in administrative measures". Almost 300 nationwide stores are closing with all those jobs going with them too. Looks like the competition for purchasing games has just got a damn sight smaller. IGN published a rather interesting article on what the closure of GAME and GameStation stores around the UK means not only for the local market but the global market too. Check out the article below:

How GAME's closure affects you
How GAME's closure affects you

Basically, for me that means looking to either supermarkets for a game purchase or ordering online. Now, while I don't mind buying stuff online seeing as their prices are normally a it cheaper than high street retailers, what I can't stand is the waiting time. I like to have my item I've paid for in my hand the moment I've parted with my hard earned cash without having to wait another 72hours for it to drop on my doormat (that's just my person grumble). Granted, GAME aren't usually the best place to go for a bargain but it's still a worry that the most available source for VG purchases is no longer going to be around. Another victim of the crashing economy. :(

Gamers Zone / GOF's Games of the Year 2011
« on: December 19, 2011, 06:43:07 AM »
Hey gamers!

With 2011 coming to a close, round about now all the game critics and reviewers are all thinking about the fabled GOTY award. Figured I'd offer the chance for us here to voice our thoughts and views on our fav games of this year because we have seen some greats. As always, normal forum rulings and specific rules for the Gamers Zone apply (i.e. no trolling, flaming, attacking other people's opinions etc.) but feel free to say what YOUR personal GOTY titles are. There's no real structure to this so you can categorise they by platform or by genre and offer a few "why" lines if you like but they must be games released this year. Leave the reminiscing of previous titles for other topics :p

Have fun! ;)

Gamers Zone / Zelda's 25th Anniversary/Skyward Sword
« on: August 19, 2011, 05:35:06 AM »
Hey gamers!

For anyone looking forward to the next Zelda installment, we're in luck. There were overlaying doubts as to whether or not Skyward Sword would be released this year or next. Thankfully, IGN has confirmed that we can look forward to Skyward Sword even before Xmas (yay! :D). The US release date has been scoped for Thanksgiving (20th Nov) and if you're in Europe, you can land it a couple of days earlier (18th Nov). Oh yeah, and it's NOT being ported to the Wii U. Apparently, the feature of the Motion+ has been so far integrated into the game that the idea of porting it to the upcoming console would be "implausible" (as quoted by Ninty director Eiji Aonuma).

Beside the obvious questions about purchasing the next Zelda adventure, it's also Zelda's 25th year of collecting hearts, saving princesses and cutting grass to get money (if only mowing the lawn was that lucrative eh? :p). So let's fade back to our memories of this classic franchise.

Feel free to place your fond memories, hints & tips, glitches and general anecdotes about this Ninty golden oldie as we celebrate its silver jubilee!

Happy gaming! ;)
