Title: Awesome Program!
Post by: landbeforetimelover on June 09, 2007, 01:26:56 AM
I just found this cool make your own jeopardy program.  I have already made an lbt jeopardy board.  It's so fun.  Perhaps we can do something with it in the party room.  Any ideas?

oh hey cool!  I don't have time to check it out at the moment but I will soon.  This looks great!  I'm sure we could have some fun with it. B)

I'll keep this program in mind.  Might come in handy as a teaching resource.  If you'd like to try and run a jeopardy thing on LBT in the Party Room, go for it. :yes

If I may ask a stupid question, what IS a jeopardy board?

Jeopardy is a game show over here...been running for many many years now.  You answer questions for a certain dollar amount and the more the value, the harder the question.

Yeah.  I guess I could come up with questions about lbt and put my game on yousendit.  A completed game is only like 12k.  The program is about 6mb so I could just post the link to the download site cuz I don't want to burn up my bandwidth on yousendit.  I only have like 300mb more of free transfer rate thanks to the singing project.

So it is a kind of quiz?

If this is anything like the real Jeopardy, yep.  It's a simple question/answer game with point values assigned to each question.

Yeah.  This is exactly like jeopardy.  I'm just putting lbt questions in it.  Anyone want to help me write the questions?

I could help with LBT 1 but that's all unfortunately.  I'm liable to make incorrect answers on all the sequels.

To save time, don't make the game as large as the real thing...two rounds and all that.  One should be plenty or you'll be doing this for a long time.

Categories:  films, songs, voice overs, characters
$ values: 100, 300, 500, 700, 900

2 Daily Doubles, just like the real thing (if that's an option).

Yeah.  I could do that.  I'll try to get some trivia questions but I'm not too good at this sort of thing.

I designed a "Jeopardy Board" graphic in Photoshop.  If we ever get a game started, we could use this to keep track of which questions are still left on the board.  I'm willing to update this board after each question.  It's basic but I think it looks good enough.
I can of course modify it for fewer (or more) categories and a second round if we really want.

I played with that "Make Your Own Jeopardy" program...it doesn't seem to be useful at all for setting up for a forum or Internet game (too easy to cheat, no logging in for the "game show host", etc).  I think if we want to make a Jeopardy game, we need to do it from scratch.  I'm willing to help out with it though, for sure! :wow

We could probably allow as many people as we want into a single game, but we need to designate somebody as the "game show host", who reads the question and looks up the answers.  Perhaps if whoever answers a question right becomes the "game show host" for the next question, everyone can participate.

Looks wonderful Action9000!  What will it look like when a question has already been answered?  Will the dollar value turn to black or did you put each dollar value on a different layer in Photoshop so you can easily delete it!

Yep, I can just erase the number and it will be a blank blue square.

Cool!  40 questions wouldn't be too difficult to come up with.  How many people should help with writing the questions?

so what?  there would be an answer key and each person would pass it on to the next?  It would have to be encrypted.

The fewer people help write the questions, the less likely it is that a person will answer their own question.

It depends on how strict we want to set up the game.  If we want to simulate a real jeopardy game, probably only one or two people should make up the questions and these people should either be permanent "game show hosts" or not participate in the game after.

The other option is to Not write the questions beforehand.  We select somebody (probably you LBTlover, since you started the idea) as the game Show Host for the first question.  The first member to select a question gets to start.  The Game Show Host then makes up a question for that category and point value.  The questions will Not be pre-written.  Whoever gets the question right becomes the "game show host" for the next question and so on until the board is empty.  Then we declare a winner.

There is a little more possibility that the game won't be as balanced but it will be a Heck of a lot easier to set up!  I almost think this would be a better idea for a forum game, to allow for maximum participation.

if we make this too tricky, it will take the fun out of it for some.  I think we should make an answer key and post the link here but ya know, put it into an archive and put a password on it so if anyone tried to download it, they couldn't get it unless we gave them the password.

All we really need now are our categories!
Title: Awesome Program!
Post by: landbeforetimelover on June 10, 2007, 06:10:46 PM
the thing is, a lot of people are not good at writing questions (like me) and therefore, if we want the best game possible, it would be logical to have someone who is better at writing questions write the questions.
Title: Awesome Program!
Post by: landbeforetimelover on June 10, 2007, 06:13:22 PM
Okay.  I suppose for the sake of making things easier, we shouldn't have pre-determinied questions.  Unless of course we get people writing questions like "what color is Cera?" for a $500 question. :lol

I don't know.  Let's see what people here like best.

In the end, it's really your decision Action9000.  I would be happy to contribute in any case weather we have pre-determined questions or not.

I like this idea.  I was considering putting it to a vote, myself.  It's a debate between complicating the process and making it really good, or just winging it and having fun.  Considering it's just a party thing, My vote is for winging it and seeing what happens.  If it doesn't work, we can back up and put more structure into it.

I agree.  Pre-determined questions may make the board better than if we just have everyone write a question (unless I write them of course :lol ) but the task of making 40 questions and daily doubles for 1 or 2 people could take a week.  I don't think this would last long if this happened.

I think there should be a time limit to how long a person has to complete a question.  Of course then, there will be those who want to have fun but don't want to contribute.  What do you think?

A time limit would be nice.  We need to make it fairly long in order to keep the game fair.  Not everyone can live on the forum all day.

I would say a 1-day time limit (24 hours).  If a question isn't answered by then, the answer is given out and nobody is awarded points.  The same person should ask for another question.

Whoever gets the question right asks the next question.  ANYONE can *buzz in* and try to answer anyone else's question.  If nobody gets it right in 24 hours, the question is scrapped and removed from the board.  How does that sound?

Wonderful!  Sounds perfect.  I know not everyone can live here like I practically do.  It's just easy to forget that fact.

I think now, we should start a new thread in the party room and post something like:

Okay.  Here's jeopardy.  Please select a question you want.  If you get it right, you write the next one and post it here.

If they answer it right, you can take their question off the board and they can write a question.  Since you're an admin, you could save the file missing the question in photoshop and save it as a jpeg and then edit their post and put the board with the missing question in there.  The question cannot be answered until you put the modified board up so it's fair.  what do you think about this?

Anyways, I guess we're in need of categories!

1) The Gang
2) Guest Characters
3) Songs and Soundtracks
4) TV Series
5) The Early Sequels (2-4)
6) Grosvenor Sequels (5-12)
7) Backstage (stuff relating to the cast, writers, and development of the series)
8) Original LBT

That is my brainstorming.  Throw out ideas and we'll choose our best 8 to go into the game!

I think we could handle making 8 catagories especially if we don't have to write all the questions.

Okay.  I'm going to make a new thread now if you're ready.  Feel free to edit my post if I miss anything.  I probably will since I've been up for a couple days. :lol

westill need to finalize catagories though.

Yeah, we should do that first.  I also want to have the board updated with the categories before we get the post.  That will only take a minute to change the text though.
Any thoughts for categories or do you want to just use mine?

I really liked the catagories you have so far.  Would Ruby and Chomper be considered guest characters or the gang?

Good question.  I'm going to say "Guest characters" because they aren't really part of the Gang until very recently and there is no word on whether they are part of the Gang in LBT 13.  I'd put them under "Guest characters".  Honestly though, they could be either.
Title: Awesome Program!
Post by: landbeforetimelover on June 10, 2007, 06:46:22 PM
Okay.  We should mention this on the board.  If I wanted to write a question about Ruby and Chomper, I would be confused how to classify them.

Ya know, like catagory 1 instead of being called "The gang" could be called "The gang (origional 5)" just to avoid confusion.  We don't want people asking questions on the jeopardy thread, which will happen if we make this too confusing.

Looks great!  You must understand however that I cannot be totally reliable.  I do have school until the 22nd.  I can get on using a CGI proxy server for about 15 minutes during lunch but that's about it.  And after school of course.  When summer comes, I can spend a lot more time here but until then, I really can't invest 8 hours a day to lbt like I usually do.  I was able to do this on thursday and friday because I missed school those days.  I usually have school and will probably not be missing any other days for the rest of the year.
