Infected!

My computer has been infected with one or two trojan viruses. I will not be on for a while.

Get those scans going.

You can usually get them off in about an hour.

I used the latest version of Norton (360), but the problem persists. I am still able to get on, but only for a brief time.

What is AVG?

Oh and might I add that I did a Full System Virus Scan with Norton, like, 4 times, and the problem still persists.

AVG Anti-Virus is what LBTlover means. Its free, but if you want to try it, you need to remove Norton first (never have more than one anti virus program on any computer).

If its not a virus, could be spyware or adaware.

Try:

AVG Anti-Spyware
Spybot Search and Destroy
A-Squared Anti-Spyware
Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE

I use all four of these and they all find different things, so you need to run them all and depending on how many files you have it could take over a half hour for all of them if you go one at a time.

Norton detects Spyware as well. And I've used Lavasoft already, but it could not remove anything because of the Trojan.

I'm not removing Norton, not after how long it took to set it up and not after how much Clint had paid for it.

Another reason I can't remove it is because without Norton, the computer will behave even worse, and I am not able to stay on the internet long enough to download another Virus Scanner.

Not 100% true on 2x avs on one comp. You can not have 2 resident abtivirues and you need to tell each av to ignore each others quaentine directory and directories in general.

Also on the original topic theres also a chance that norton is giving you a false positive. I could point you to about 20 posts on various forums about false positives for norton many of wich are different FPs for different applications.

Like landbefore time lover said grab your self a copy of avg free easyest way to find it search on google for "avg free". Avg does not make it extreamly obvious as to where the free version is on their site.

Any ways a fast way to double check nortons scan results is to google the file name of the infected file with qoutes and the extention "somedumb.exe" for example.

Chances are very very good that if you get no results on google about it being infected then its just another norton screw up.

Ill secound petries recomendations for avs and anti spywares though i never used a squared ive heard nothing but good things about it.

For the time being with 2x avs just dont have any running full time while your doing the clean up. Later on ill walk you through how to set up avg to ignore nortons directories As for norton well youll be on your own on that one that programs not getting any where near my laptop

Hmm ok i want you to do this for me sence your not able to stay online long enough. Press ctrl alt esc put every listed running proccess in task manager proccess list in word pad or some such then post here. ill search out each and see what are legit and what are not. Then ill tell you how to find their files on your hd and how to kill them and delete them so they wont restart. You will not delete exactly but let them end up in recycle bin.

Were gona do a manual clean up to at least get you able to remain online to fix things up.

Uhh, that's what I said isn't it?

Never have more than one anti-virus program on your computer....

Anyhoo, about Norton, I knew people who had it and have dumped it for AVG because Norton wasn't cutting it. Ate system resources like a hog as well. I'd say once your subscription runs out, try a different program. As for not being allowed on long enough, you're going to have to explain thats its necessary to solve an issue.

If you've got xp or vista and you can't remove norton, just go into the C drive and into the program files and delete any files associated with norton. DO NOT do this with any previous version of windows. Especially windows 98 or lower. This could screw ya up bad. I dumped norton after paying $159.99 for 2 years of premium service. I use AVG. It's the best one I have ever used. Norton and Macaffe(check spelling) are the worst one's ever. They really don't do much for ya. Just try to get the exe setup file for avg. It's about 18megs by now so if you have slow internet, be prepared to wait a long time. AVG will help you out a lot. Here's the download link:

Sorry about that post yesterday. I was just a bit frustrated that I was constantly being told to get AVG even after I had already stated I was not removing Norton.

After realizing it was a Virus Scan, I do recognize AVG now. I have indeed used it before, on one of my old computers. All it did was make things worse. While removing "viruses", it caused the computer to freeze and I had to reboot it, and the computer did not function any better afterwards.

Due to this bad experience, I don't plan on downloading AVG again.

I apologize if I'm sounding bitter.

Norton was able to detect the file that was infected with the trojan, and it's now removed from the computer. But I don't know yet if this fixed the computer. I'll post again with an update.

Sorry to hear your computer has a virus. It happened me a couple times and the dude who sold us our computer has to format the hard drive and re-install Windows. My antivirus isn't working either, cause I need a registration key (which I don't have). I use Norton Antivirus but my brother might install another antivirus (if he will to do it <_<) 'cause the one I have needs to registrate with the registration key I mentioned before. But I don't need to worry now, 'cause my computer isn't working erratically. So I hope you get your computer back to work, DarkHououmon.

Well after running Norton and removing the infected file, the computer still acted up, so I tried an Ad-Aware Lavasoft scan. Froze, so I rebooted. Before loading up windows, the computer did a System Check, and replaced an invalid security ID with the default one. Then it loaded back up. After disconnecting the internet again, I ran Ad-Aware Lavasoft again, and when the scan was through, it detected another trojan. Removed it, rehooked the internet, and so far it has been running fine.

I am not 100% sure yet but I think the problem's resolved now.
