Title: RainbowFaceProtege's Plush Projects!!
Post by: RainbowFaceProtege on March 25, 2020, 09:07:24 PM
This is the thread where I'll post my babies!  :^^spike I've made quite a few LBT plushies, so I'm gonna take this one post at a time! Also, since this has already come up in my introductory post, I should probably mention that I'm not selling any plushies right now, these are just my personal projects.

First off is Tricia! She's made of felt and is about six inches long, give or take.

Magnifico! Great work. How long did Tricia take to make?

I’m gonna be honest. At first glance, it looked like a pink elephant to me instead of Tricia. :lol

But good job on the custom plushies! I’ve done sewing before — with assisted instructions so I know what to do. You’re next level dude. :DD

Ah, the frill on her head looks like a star. :TreeStar She certainly gained a hot pink shade compared to light pink. :p

You can resize the images by adding a width modifier. [/img] so that it resizes appropriately. ^^

Yikes, these pictures are scary-big.  :olittlefoot Sorry about that, everyone. Embedding images from Google Photos is a first for me.

@Gentle Sharptooth Thank you! I think making her took me a day or two.
@ImpracticalDino  :PCera Yeah...I'm gonna try to fix those images right now. Anyway, I somehow jumped right into working without patterns from the beginning. Sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error before I come up with something I think is acceptable!

@OwlsCantRead I was annoyed that I couldn't find fabric in the right shade for her.  :p
Ahh, THANK YOU SO MUCH for help with the images! Gonna go resize them ASAP!

@jassy Thanks! I definitely have to be in the right mood for sewing, as there are times when I'm not feeling patient enough for it, either. Tricia was a relatively unambitious project for me, so she didn't too long to make, but some of my other plushies have taken a week or so for me to finish.

@RainbowFaceProtege: Thanks for the picture resize! Now it doesn’t take up too much area. :)

Although, the first image is no longer available for some reason. It shows a black empty square instead. I’m on iPad (mobile). Is it also broken on PC guys?

And Jesus Christ, those links you put for your images are long as hell. This is only my preference, but I use Imgur for all of my photo needs. :yes

I can't see any of them either! Would love to see your plushie creations! :D

If you are uncomfortable hosting them on an image hosting site like imgur, you also have the option of attaching the photos to your post on the forum. Just press the "Attachments and other options" feature underneath a post  :yes

Argh, I don't know what happened there.  :thinking Okay, since I know literally nothing about using image hosting, I'm gonna switch to attachments and see how that goes.

EDIT: Okey-dokey! Fixed.

Yay, I can see her now! She looks really cute! I've always wanted to get into sewing, but it's quite daunting so I've never really done more than add pockets to pants that didn't have any (whyyy women pants, why?!) Taking on a plush project seems like quite some work. Well done!

Only a day or two for something small like Tricia. It can be about a week for a more typical project, though.

I plan to put another up today, just gotta take more pics! :chompysmile

Alrighty, here's some Guido for you! Gotta love this guy--he's my second favorite LBT character (well, technically my third since there's a pair of characters taking up my top spot)! This is actually my second version of Guido, since he was one of those characters I first attempted early on in my sewing ventures, when I still had a lot to learn and relied way too much on glue (blech). I'd show the first version for comparison, buuuut...it's underneath this new one. I basically just reupholstered him when I decided my original wasn't good enough!  :lol

He's about the size of a Build-a-Bear (12 inches when sitting down) and made out of fleece.

Ooh, a Guido fan I see. That’s nice! :)

That’s an adorable plushy of him you created there. The quality has improved in my opinion when compared to the Tricia plushy you made. I can’t wait to see what more you have to offer. :DD

Is The Great Day of the Flyers your favorite sequel or something? Both Tricia and Guido hail from that movie. :SmugSpike

Well, I like Guido too. The colors and posture rig match quite well. The bopper tail and his hairstyle is golden, though the expression of the plush looks confident instead of uncomfortably derpy, which is definite not an expression I see on Guido often. :p But it's nice!

This one's great! Guido is one of my favorite characters too. I really like the colors you picked for him.

Haha! I don't know how to use a sewing machine either. Just winging it by hand and cursing the needle every time I accidentally poke myself in my fingers  :PCera

Great job on Guido.,I like how you made his hair on his head and tail look seemless (literal use of the word this time). You seriously need to consider making these and selling them on etsy after the pandemic. :)

Can't go wrong with Guido. :)littlefoot Indeed, the quality of the plush is already vastly different to the Tricia one, in a good way. You made me want one right now.

@ImpracticalDino Yep--definitely an improvement since Tricia!

Is The Great Day of the Flyers your favorite sequel or something? Both Tricia and Guido hail from that movie. :SmugSpike

Second favorite, actually. Free tree stars to anyone who can guess my first! :rainbowwave  :lol
Thanks for all the feedback @OwlsCantRead --I appreciate your analysis!

@Mumbling Thanks, I was really pleased to find some fleece in the perfect colors for this project! That doesn't always happen, and I like being able to avoid felt when I can. (Sometimes I choose fabric type over fabric color for that reason, so I'll warn you guys that some projects I show are gonna have not-quite-accurate color choices.)

@Gentle Sharptooth Thank you! I probably should consider Etsy at some point in my life...

@Anagnos Aw, glad to hear it! Like I said before, Tricia was kind of a purposefully quick project for me. One of those times I just felt like sewing but didn't want it to eat up all my free time.

Can't go wrong with Guido. :)littlefoot Indeed, the quality of the plush is already vastly different to the Tricia one, in a good way. You made me want one right now.

Okay, I'm not gonna say anything is impossible, but I sure can't make any promises, so let's correct that "when" to an "if." I mean, I picture myself making things to sell, and I can't help imagining scenarios like:
A) I end up losing more money than I make because I'm far from experienced in business ventures. (What's a reasonable price for custom plushies? Beats me.)
B) I can't manage to create anything that's flawless enough for me to put up for sale without my conscience nagging at me (you con artist, you're really gonna charge that for that??!).
C) A project rips during shipping because my hand-sewing is hardly invincible...

Soooo, yeah. Just not sure I'm there yet.  :sducky

Continue improving your sewing craft overtime, and when you feel the time is right, perhaps then an Etsy shop is not out of the question. But until then, I look forward to praising or maybe critiquing whatever new plushies you’ve made for us to look at. :)

This one's kind of old, and I'm admittedly not very happy with how she turned out. The proportions are just plain off. I might be able to salvage her with an overhaul, though...maybe I'll finally do that some time soon. I gotta have a better plush of one of my favorite characters than this, after all! :facepalm

@RainbowFaceProtege: Yep, yep, yep! :duckyhappy :lol I like crazy!

I agree. This rainbowface plushy you made reflects the inexperience that you had at the time. I’m not really keen on the facial expression you showcased here in combination with the T-Rex like posture you put the female into. But then again, it also kinda makes her look like a child pleading for something, adding a bit of humor to your creation. :lol

The tail could’ve ended more pointed instead of flat, and the feet could’ve been improved.

The colors you’ve chosen are basically on point. The blue stripes on her back were done nicely and the yellow underbelly is good as well. The head is also more or less accurate.

Despite the criticisms I’ve had in the beginning, it’s still an amazing plushy! Trust me, I could never make something even remotely close to whatever you do on a daily basis, at least without step-on-step instructions. I’m only a little more critical than usual because you seem very good at what you do.

While its not as superb as the Guido one, you've managed to replicate the rainbowface quite nicely here. The colors are mostly all spot-on, but the toning on the beak looks to be slightly off by how it is shaped. A small nitpick here and there, but the end result is anything but poor. It is indeed amazing when people put their skills to good use. You certainly would not see me doing this sort of thing, even though I did some in comprehensive school, but never on this scale. :)littlefoot

Thanks for your feedback, folks! I've been making some improvements to this Rainbow Face today, hoping I can correct most of her downfalls, and so far it's not so bad. Particularly, I'm trying to shape her face better and make the neck/legs/tail skinnier. Maybe also going to pose her arms differently to cut down on the "T. rex" look. :lol

Thanks Mumbling! :SmugSpike Yep, having her able to sit upright was one of my goals when I was making her. As for how long she took to finish, I don't remember since this is one of my older ones, but I'd venture to say it was about a week. That head would've taken me a long time.

On a related topic, it creeps people out when they see plushies I've got in progress that I've put the eyes on but not yet attached pupils to. :p

I am now haunted bu this eyeless Ducky! :o

Well, here's this guy!----->:rainbowwave

This one had already looked better than my other Rainbow Face, but I still thought the proportions could be more movie-accurate, so I was experimenting with that. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. Looks like I'll be making the same changes to the other one now!

(If I could change anything else about this one, it'd be the color of that green fabric. Unfortunately, when I made him, that fleece was the best match the fabric store had to the color of the character, or at least it was the best that was any good for making plushies.)

Heh, I looked at screenshots again, though, and they actually do hold their arms T. rex style! :lol

(Run, Littlefoot!! They're carnivores from outer space, and this is all just an elaborate hunting strategy!!)

To distinguish between the Rainbow Faces' personalities a little, I actually wanted this plushie to look a little derpy. :lol He does have a bit of a "scatterbrained scientist" personality. :p

I'm going to do my darndest to make my other Rainbow Face more presentable...her nose especially needs help, stat!!

Love the new addition to the collection. Their pose is very similar to almost every bipedal creature, but with it comes a certain adequate semblance that is fitting of their species.

So how many plushes have you made so far?

You're actually right, Flathead, some of that brown is the burn mark. There's some brown fabric across the inside of Etta's arm there that's just part of her wing, but the yellow fabric near that also has a brown spot colored onto it for the burn. (I was having a hard time figuring out how to make her burn look right, but a creative friend of mine suggested brushing some dark makeup on her arm, and it worked perfectly!)
Hmm...I'm not even sure how many plushies I've made! :thinking Let's see...
- Counting only LBT plushies that turned out halfway decent, I think 7...meh, maybe 6...heh, my definition of "halfway decent" is pretty iffy. :p For now, let's go with 7!
- Adding my plushies of non-LBT characters to that, I've done 17 good plushies.
- Adding my early-sewing LBT plushies to that, I've done 20 plushies total.
It's totally possible that I've forgotten something somewhere, though, so this would best be considered an estimate.

Welp, looks like I'm three months late. :p

I had Strut in progress for quite a while, just was too lazy to sew the hands and feet until now. (In case any of you have ever wondered...sewing hands and feet is kind of a pain.) Here's the forum's favorite egg stealer! :DD I probably should start putting something else in these picture for scale, but he's about 12 inches tall. I'm pretty happy with how he turned out! One of these days, I'll have to make myself an Ozzy to go with him. He looks amazing! A very nice pose for him too. If I may offer some feedback: both Strut & Ozzy have darker spots on their hips & tails, as can be seen in this pic:

Not sure how easy these would be to add, but I feel like adding the spots gives the plushies a little more personality! :)

I can totally understand not wanting to take on Ozzy immediately afterwards. Art is no fun when it feel repetitive  :OzzyAngry

@Mumbling I had wanted to add those spots...unfortunately, I just don't know what the best method of doing that would be. Hopefully, I'll figure it out in the future, he'd have more character with that patterning for sure.
@Flathead770 I'll have to do something like that! :CeraHAPPY I actually did take some pics of my oldest plushie (Mo) next to Strut as a "then and now" sort of comparison of my sewing skills, I'll have to post them.

Title: Re: RainbowFaceProtege's Plush Projects!!
Post by: RainbowFaceProtege on March 01, 2024, 08:19:12 PM
Hi, everyone! :rainbowwave Today, I’m dusting off this old thread to share a passion project I’m very excited about! I’ve been wanting to have something like this for YEARS, and some of you might remember my previous attempt at making it happen. There were earlier attempts, too, which were never posted here, but none of these other attempts were a version I was very satisfied with. Now, finally, I’ve achieved the plush toys I’ve wanted for ages!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s the Rainbow Faces!! :Mo

Although I haven’t had any new Land Before Time projects to post in this thread for a while, I’ve made plenty of other plush toys over the past bunch of years. My skills have expanded a lot since the last time I tried to sew some Rainbow Faces, which was about 10 years ago. In December, I noticed some of the colors I had in my felt supply matched the male Rainbow Face’s coloring, so I decided it was finally time for another attempt at creating this duo. But I decided to go about it differently than before, because I wanted to finally do this RIGHT!

There were multiple issues from my last try that I wanted to avoid… :rhett_ohsnap

First, the seams. They were way too visible on my old projects. The thread I used was too dark, which made my stitching stand out way too much, and the fleece fabric I usually chose did nothing to cover it up. To make matters worse, these characters involved even more seams than most projects due to the multitude of different fabric colors it took to create their heads. It was too difficult for me to keep that many seams neat and symmetrical, which is why the heads came out so misshapen.

Second, the poses. In the past, I put the characters’ legs at a 90-degree angle to their bodies, trying to achieve something resembling a scientifically accurate Gallimimus posture. This resulted in no hope of the characters ever standing up. The best they could do was lean back against their tails while their legs stuck out in the front, which looked awkward. Plus, their head and neck positions meant they spent a lot of time staring intensely at the ceiling, and the fact that their facial expressions looked rather glazed over didn’t help.

Third, the proportions. In the movie, the Rainbow Faces look pretty graceful as far as LBT dinosaurs go, with slender limbs and narrow heads.

Fleece fabric tends to expand when stuffed, however, and my stitches weren’t as firm as they should’ve been, so my previous Rainbow Faces turned out far chubbier than they should have. Of course, I could have taken in the seams afterward, but I was afraid to. The thick legs and tail were the only reason these Rainbow Faces were able to sit up at all.

This time around, I took a totally new approach. I decided to use felt to sew a base form with minimal coloring, then needle felt completely over it with the final colors. Needle felting is when you take a preexisting surface, usually foam or felt, and use a certain tool to stab loose felt fibers into it until the surface is covered to whatever extent you want. This would eliminate my problem of having to deal with new seams every time a new color was introduced. I wasn’t sure how this would turn out at all, since I didn’t have that much experience with needle felting, but it seemed worth a shot. Well, things turned out far better than I imagined!

I made the male Rainbow Face first, since I already had all the colors I needed for him. I didn’t take as many WIP pictures as I should have, but I do have a few here. Take the head, for example! (Haha, see what I did there, because this character says “for example” all the time? Oh, never mind.)

After sewing the basic shape, I was surprised at how nicely the final colors stayed in place with needle felting. It TOTALLY covered up all the seams that were underneath. It was a pretty forgiving process, too, since if I mistakenly added a color to the wrong area I could just go right over it with a different color!

I also decided to pose my Rainbow Faces differently this time. In order to have these two stand up well, it was time to just get over scientific accuracy and go straight for that tail-dragging dinosaur pose of the 80s and 90s. The Rainbow Faces actually stand that way quite a few times in the movie, anyway, because this is LBT we’re talking about. Let’s face it, these cartoons weren’t doing any scientific research at all! I also repurposed an unused wire hanger in my closet to give some support to the legs and tail of these Rainbow Faces, shaping the wire into a tripod of sorts. Now I wouldn’t have to worry about whether the legs and tail were thick enough to hold the characters up, so I was free to keep their proportions accurately slim.

Anyway, back when I posted those last Rainbow Faces years ago, some of the feedback I received pointed out that their poses looked stiff, with the hands in a pretty generic dinosaur pose. I wanted to improve on that this time around, too. So I rewatched the movie to see what facial expressions and hand gestures the Rainbow Faces tended to use the most. I love these characters’ personalities, and I wanted to showcase that in these renditions of them!

(https://i.imgur.com/eRYpOMd.jpeg 0)

The male Rainbow Face is warm and welcoming to the gang, always eager to help them out or teach them something new, to the point where his enthusiasm often brims over and nearly causes him to reveal classified information. I always got the impression that he was the rookie of the duo, still getting the hang of going on missions and such. But even with his occasional fumbles, you can still tell he’s very intelligent. I always thought his voice and word choices made him sound like a kindly professor!

He’ll often hold up his forefinger when he’s trying to make a point, so I stitched down some fingers on his right hand to create that pose, and his other hand is opened outward. I wanted him to look like he’s excited to teach somebody some science. :DD

Of course, some people I know have pointed out how the fact that he only has three fingers could also make it look like the one he’s holding up is, well…you know. But whatever. That’s how it looks in the movie, too! :p

For his facial expression, I decided I wanted his eyes to be fully open for that friendly, enthusiastic look.

The orange areas of his eyes were cut from sheets of felt, and his pupils are plastic eyes from Etsy. I think the shiny pupils really helped give him the bright-eyed smile I was looking for!

So here’s the finished plush! :ChomperImAwesome He’s about 12 inches tall when standing, but he can also sit down because of the wire in his legs. In the end, he took about a few weeks to make. What do you think of him?

Did I mention I LOVE HIM SO MUCH?!? :duckyhappy

Up next, I’ll show off his colleague in a separate post once I’ve taken more pictures! :)petrie

@Mumbling Thanks, glad you think so!

@Rattymon Thank you, it’s good to hear the improvement shows! I have to be honest, I was at the point where those older Rainbow Faces hurt me to look at—in fact, even back when I first posted them here, I wasn’t thrilled with them. This was my description of the female:
Quote
This one's kind of old, and I'm admittedly not very happy with how she turned out. The proportions are just plain off. I might be able to salvage her with an overhaul, though...maybe I'll finally do that some time soon. I gotta have a better plush of one of my favorite characters than this, after all!
Needless to say, I’m much happier with my new Rainbow Faces. And thanks for the compliment regarding his hand! I thought it was cute as well! :^^spike

@Sneak Thank you, it made me smile to read that! And I’m glad you thought the post was interesting! I didn’t know if anyone would actually bother to read the whole thing, haha… :lol

Thank you @Atroxia !

I’m finally getting around to my second Rainbow Face plush post! I did a lot more documentation of my process for the second one, so I had a lot more photos to upload before I could make the post. Also, Google decided to make all the photos from my previous post disappear, so I had to upload those to Imgur, too! Argh!

Anyway…

This Rainbow Face is the more reserved one—and the one with more attitude. She’s strict about following rules, she has no patience for ignorance whatsoever, and she’s not afraid to give a retort to anyone who challenges these standards. At the same time, though, she seems to respect those who display intelligence, since she brings down her harshness when interacting with Littlefoot. But she’s still not letting him have any classified information! Yeah, as far as alien characters go, she’s very much the classic, secretive, “above you” archetype. She often has to scold the other Rainbow Face about saying too much, and he typically defers to her, suggesting that she’s the leader of the duo. She was my very favorite LBT character when I was a kid. I thought she was SO cool. Come on, her boldness was enough to startle Mr. Threehorn! What a boss!

“Have you really seen all there is to see? Are there no mysteries left for YOU?”

The fact that she’s a lot more closed off than her colleague shows in her body language, because she uses less hand motions. This made it quite a bit harder to pick out a defining pose for her, unlike my first Rainbow Face, whose pose I settled on almost instantly. In the end, I noticed having her hands clasped together in front of her was a recurring pose, so I tried to replicate that in the way I positioned her hands. I stopped short of actually sewing them together, though. I don’t like to restrict the poses of my creations that much.

I also gave this Rainbow Face half-lidded eyes, as they’re rarely open all the way in the movie. She’s too sassy and snarky for that! Her eyelashes are made of some twine I just happened to have lying around in my craft supplies. I love when some random thing I have around ends up being unexpectedly perfect for a new project!

Here’s the WIP photos. Before I felted her final colors on, she looked quite a bit different!

Now…I will admit that my sizing of these characters relative to each other isn’t perfect. In the movie, the female Rainbow Face seems to be slightly shorter than the male. By accident, however, my female turned out slightly taller than my male. But the good news is that if I manipulate the wires in their legs the right way, the characters still appear to have accurate heights, even though they really don’t. Heh heh heh!

Guys, I LOVE them so much you don’t even know. They are so incredibly special to me, and it brings me joy every day to look at them!!!
