The Fridge / How can one work (well) in a group?
« on: February 06, 2011, 03:16:13 PM »
Bit of a stupid question and I realize that..but I'm looking for some sort of advice now that I have email confirmation of the project group study that is going on this term.  I am meeting the people in the group (of four) tomorrow but I am rather worried that something will go wrong.  I don't want to give off the impression that I'm some sort of unhelpful weird person that will result in them being annoyed.  I want to do well with this project, I also see this as an opportunity to broaden out more into connecting, although how i will be doing this I haven't really given much thought into.  But my question is, how does one work well in a group? Are there any key points that I should take into regard in working with others?

Thank you.

The Fridge / What is your favourite drink?

Ideally I have the impulse to write a long and boring post on Alexander (the Great) but I'll settle for more of the relaxation ones.;)

Question:
What is your favourtie drink?

Mine are:

-Beer: PanachÈ/Shandy- the Lemonade with beer
-Milk: Did you know they do chocolate milk now?  I'm highly disappointed that I didn't get my idea out straight away (relatively poor joke)  :lol
-Ice tea: Lemon...I have tried peach but   :x

The Fridge / Museums
« on: February 01, 2011, 02:52:00 PM »
Now this question is more on the broader level of what you think of Museums.  I am not actually asking if you like museums and thus whilst the responses of  such things like; 'I love museums' or 'I hate museums they are like so boring' are good, I'd like a deeper aspect in the answer.  Which makes me sound like a teacher.;)

Okay, well the idea of this thread is based mainly on behalf of  my own curiosity  in regards to a recent lecture in which the lecturer mentioned that there are some parties who are against the idea of museums as the artefacts are not native to the land and thus be returned to were it originally came from.  Although he was being specific in the point that he referred to the British Museum (which, by the way, if you ever visit England it is highly recommended :DD ), I think it applies to a more broader scope of museums that are located around the world.

He stressed that the idea that archaeologists and museums 'disrupt' the whole aspect of preservation of artefacts in the natural environment of their location.  After all archaeologists basically 'destroy' the site area when digging that it apparenty the finds do not reflect the more 'wider' aspect of the site and thus prevents the 'appreciation' of that specific time period.  Is relatively in my opinion not exactly true.

The idea of artefacts in the museum is a reflection of popular culture, the modern world need to link with the specific time period through a variety of interests that is a broad scope depending on the person and thus because of that interest (and although I may be extremely biased) should be encouraged and appreciated that the majority of the population will have some sort of interest in a particular time period and/or aspect of history and that is all down thanks to archaeological evidence (that have apparently destroyed the original site and thus the appreciation for the time period, as metnioned above   ) and the perservation of museums have helped to encourage a variety of people of all ages in aspects of history.

Indeed it it also important that the preservation of the museums itself helps to convey interest in the aspects of history....what i mean is, that the preservation of artefacts through the protection that is offered by the musuems has helped for the survival of these artefacts.  While some countries like Greece for example with the Elyesian Marbles, while there is still an ongoing massive debate in regards to returning the artefact the fact that there isn't much of a preservation in regards to artefacts is quite pronouced (although apparently that is according to the BRITISH museum and thus may be highly mixed to say " :nyah  you can't have the marbles'')and thus they are better off protected in a museum than in comparison to putting the marbles back in place as a restoration, although this point is a bit of a question as why can't the marbles go to the Athenian museum?

However, in conculsion since I've already turned this into one long and possibly confusing point, I think Musuems are a good idea since they do preserve artefacts and encourage people's interest.  Since without it there would not be that many people who are interested in the many aspects of history that has happened on Earth.    Yeah, this has turned into a long post...sorry about that  :bang , just that if i have more to say on something I'll post a lot. :lol

Thanks to any responses. :smile

The Fridge / Do you give to charity?
« on: January 23, 2011, 04:51:29 PM »
Do you give to charity?

I give to charity on occassions on those I feel are worthy causes such as Cancer UK, Children's Cancer, Redcross, NSPCC, RSPCA for example.  It's only a little bit of money that I give but it's good enough to help.  Also, I give to children's homes or refuges for women and men who have been abused by their partners, old clothing and toys that I don't use anymore.  Although this latter is more of a family (ie: Mother) orientated aspect.

It's fine if you don't give to charity for whatever reason.:)

Sound Off! / Cultural references in songs?

Aye, are there any cultural references in songs that you have come across?

I have one that I didn't like the song but I appreciated the cultural reference of the Odyssey in Nick Cave's No News From Nowhere.

Silver Screen / What TV shows/ Films that make you happy?
« on: January 22, 2011, 02:19:00 PM »
Quite similar to the music question, what about films and television shows that make you happy?

I don't watch television that much but I watch the Simpsons.  The Simpsons may have dwindled in quality of humour over the seasons, and this can be debateable in opinion, but when i watch it (like I am doing now) it just provides another focus on otherwise I just spiral back down to low periods.  I doesn't fully take it away, just that it's something else to focus on for a short period of time.

As for films: The Lion King.  I have watched this film so much that I have a deep connection to it.  It was there on one of my lowest points and it's been there for me since.

LBT too is also a film that I can watch to make me feel slightly more better.  However, these films only offer a short focus point.

Question objective:
What songs make you happy?
While it doesn't help to take my low periods/moods away from me, it helps to focus on something else for a while.  Unfortuantely the last one (Magic Dance) I've listened to a wee bit more constantly than could be considered normal but whatever. :D
Mine are:
*Circle of Life
*This is where I belong (It's from Spirit)
*No one has to be alone
*Dance Magic Dance/Magic Dance

Yes, you have indeed read the title correctly and yes, I know there isn't much of an objective and that I'm  :crazy .  In my defence,  I have thus finished my examinations and am high with 'dance magic dance' song, so I hope I'm forgiven for this *begs*..but anyway, favourite ice cream flavour?  :lol

The Fridge / Childhood dreams
« on: January 18, 2011, 03:36:40 PM »
Yeah, couldn't think up a title so Saft apologises for that...

When you were a child what did you want to be when you were younger?  If it is possible have you lived up to your childhood dream or has it completely diverted?

Mine is pretty close to be honest.  Wanted to be an archaeologist..actually have the offer to change my degree to archaeology so I will see if there is more information before I change.:D

Silver Screen / Historical inaccuraccies
« on: January 18, 2011, 03:05:07 PM »
Ideally I wanted to post this in the Book section then I remembered that there are probably not a lot of people who have read the historical based genre of fiction and thus would be more familliar with films.  Now, if there is one thing that I have learnt from Classics and Popular Culture is that films based on historical period are not necessarily intended to be accurate at all.

The purpose of the film set in a historical period is not to instruct but to entertain.  Movies such as Alexander that was actually pretty accurate didn't do as well in the 'box office' because it was too accurate and thus deemed as boring, while movies such as Gladiator was not accurate but did well because of this or it was because of Russel Crowe.  Same can be said for Disney's Hercules...I like Disney's version of Hercules because I believe that it can interest children into enjoying history based aspects but I also don't like it because it completely deviates from the actual mythology of Heracles but I suppose Disney couldn't put that Zeus was a womanising pilanderer who liked incest, sex and picking up girls as a cow (Europa myth) or Hera as a jealous 'harpy' or even Heracles who got drunk, murdered his wife (megara) and his sons through a rage then died in agony...and Hades, Hades isn't evil but the modern world, particularly thanks to the medieval monks and their influence that death and beyond is something that is scary.

And before this turns into a essay, my actual question is in films that are based on historical periods, do inaccuraccies annoy you?  And if so why?  (with possible examples) Discuss.  (I sound like a essay question.:p)

Brain Food / The World wide Mythology Trivia Quiz
« on: January 18, 2011, 02:48:10 PM »
Thought it was about time for a worldwide mythology based trivia quiz since mythology is just awesome and that due to the factor that before writing stories had to be passed around by oral language than the written language and even then only a minority could read and write thus mythological based art was intended to portray in a physical way for stories to be understood to the majority.  Now, it has been stressed to me by the lecturer that there are many versions of the one mythology aspect, doesn't make them wrong just that there are different versions.  So with that in view, questions and the acceptance of answers should in theory be based on the more common version.
Since this is also world wide mythology, any aspect can be asked as a question.

So here is the first question:

Because the Greek titan Kronos had betrayed his father Oranos and killed him, he feared that any offspring that he had would do the same to him and displace his rule.  What did he do to combat this and what did his sister-wife Rhea do to prevent him from combatting her last child (Zeus)?

The Fridge / Would you help someone in trouble?
« on: January 18, 2011, 01:23:22 PM »
Basing from an MSN conversation it got me thinking what would someone do if they saw someone in trouble?  Would you be a 'knight in shining armour' and go to the person's rescue even if it would put yourself at a risk?

One of my biggest regrets in life is not helping someone else out when they were being bullied by the same people who had bullied me.  I was too much of a coward thinking that I was 'safe' that I didn't take action against them.  I do feel bad about it and because of that, I would try to help in some way, even if it was calling the police or something if I saw someone in trouble.

History Section / Troy
« on: January 04, 2011, 08:39:48 AM »
The topic is:
What is the first thought that comes to mind when someone mentions Troy?
(By which I refer only to the Illiad NOT the Odyssey).

Nearly everyone knows about the Troy and the Trojan war whether or not they have read Homer's Illiad and the subsequent volumes from other Archaic Greek poets that wrote about Troy around the Illiad.  Whether or not they have read the Illiad they are more likely to have viewed films or read other books that have been based off this epic form of poetry, such as the film adaption of Troy that has Achilles portrayed by Brad Pitt or read books such as the Troy trilogy from David Gemmell.  What I mean is that whether you are aware of it or not, Popular culture in the form of Classics is all around us and the majority of us have seen movies such as 300, Quo Vadis, Troy, Gladiator, even Disney's Hercules that are not just about entertainment but also about influence which the modern world in all aspects is indeed influenced by the ancient world of Greece and Rome.

However before this turns into an essay format, I am going to provide an explanation as to why I'm asking you to vote in the poll.  I will admit that I was and am curious as to the result of this, especially when my Classics and Popular Culture lecturer mentioned that nearly everyone knows something about Troy and that the majority of people would most likely know it from the Trojan horse.  So this is an experiment, which all is required for you to vote in the poll (please note that it is Single choice) in which the first thought from reading the question comes to mind.   Please no wasting votes, this is an experiment albeit an unofficial one but still an experiment out of interest.

Thanks.

The Fridge / School systems.
« on: November 26, 2010, 06:34:51 PM »
Hmm, isn't the spelling ''School'' a bit of a weird spelling?

Anyway, something that struck me following a MSN conversation with Mum in regards to my sister and her situation with schools.

Now, apart from boarding schools I have attended all that I've put on the poll (also barring the option ''I did not go to school'').  Due to problems of personal nature, I found public school extremely difficult and made worse by constant bullying and I had to be taken out to a private school, which again I found it extremely difficult due to problems of personal nature that wasn't helped by constant bullying, so my only option was to have Home schooling.

However, whilst I'm aware that not every child is the same and that there are many stances from people who feel that Home schooling is never a good option to have, it was in a way a good option for me.  Although saying that, I would never opt for my own children (if I have any) to have home schooling but this option of schooling was the only choice for me and without that option I wouldn't be where I am now.  However whilst it could be pointed out that maybe I should have tried to look for different schools, unfortuantely they couldn't take me or we couldn't afford it, especially due to my mother's health and moving around and I couldn't afford to stay out of the school system for too long.

Again, not every child was the same and if I could go back and would have had the support in place that I have now at university then maybe I would have been able to have managed Public or Private school much better but alas that didn't happen and like so many who have problems in school I fell through the cracks and was left to struggle, especially when I think about all that I've missed out on but if I had just been left and my parents hadn't have tried and fought, I wouldn't be at university now.

Please note that I'm not saying that Home schooling is super great and that I recommend it for everyone, what i'm trying to say is that every child is different and one school system doesn't allows fit for one, especially when lack of support is present.

Thanks and I hope that I haven't offended anyone....

Silver Screen / Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part one
« on: November 26, 2010, 06:01:30 PM »
--Warning--

Right before I start off the actual thread, I'm posting a warning to those who haven't seen the film as of yet to not continue any further, I don't want to spoil the film for you but I can't be held responsible if you read the thread and then feel that spoilers have ruined it for you.  So I'm asking that if you have as of yet not seen the movie, then please do not read any further.

Thanks, not trying to be rude in this regard but I know what it is like for someone to post spoilers up with no warning and then it's just followed by sheer disappointment.

Again, please don't read if you haven't seen the film and want to.

.................................................................................................

I'm suprised that there hasn't been a thread for this yet.

Anyway, I thought I'll take the liberty to do so first.

Now, I actually saw the movie on the 19th with my mother and sister.  For someone who has read all books from the series, I actually found that compared to the previous films (POA in particular) this film seemed to be much more loyal to the book, although by saying that there were some scenes in which I found it to be lacking or slow.  There are scenes that I felt to have been rushed, especially the part in which the explanation of R.A.B and scenes when I was like '?', what with the death of Moody and the just random explanation that Bill gives.  I know that in the DH book that it's rather similar with Moody randomly dying but at least we get an explanation from Bill of what happened not ''Mad-eye is dead''...

Then the scene with Hedwig at the beginning.  I was so convinced that they had diverted from the book and decided not to kill her, alas, that was not so.  However, despite my little dissapoinment, I felt her death was much more satisfactory in the way that on her own accord she tried to defend Harry.

However, despite the factor that I was continuously waiting for the part in which the film would be split, from the basis of what my sister and mum said (both have not read the books), I did feel that for those who haven't read the books the story was explained much better than it has been done previously, it's the first time in which my sister fully got what was happening without me having to explain aspects to her.

Anyway, I think I've rambled a bit too much on it....sorry about that.  For those who have seen the movie, what did you think of it?  Are you looking forward for the second part?

Thank you.

(Sorry, have had to edit it due to broken tabs thanks to slow internet).

The Fridge / A predicament
« on: November 11, 2010, 04:43:30 PM »
....
I had typed this out and selected post when my internet decided to die, normally I would copy it again just in case, didn't do it this time... :bang

This isn't a bad post, I'm actually on a high: Essay given in, reading and mum and sister are visiting me this coming week, and I get to go home in three weeks time. :smile

It's just that I'm a bit unsure of a decision to make and if anyone can give me advice then that will be great.

My aunt last week invited me to go to the museum with her on the 27th.  I want to go to the museum, I mean I love musuems and I like to seize any opportunity that allows me to go to one, but I just don't feel sure about her idea.

She wants to do as follows:

-Take train
-Walk, bus, taxi to museum
-Spend night in youth hostel so have extra day to go to museum
-Go back either sunday evening or Monday morning.

I don't mind walking to the museum and I don't mind taking the train itself.  I am worried about the mass crowds in the train and train stations.  I know that I can't escape somewhere I can regain control and calm down, it's not like here..where I can go to the garden, or little museum or  back to my dorm-room.  I don't want to have a meltdown...that'll just embarrass us both and I don't know how my aunt will react.

I am also worried about spending a night in a youth hostel.
It is not the youth hostel in itself, I have stayed in one before when I was on a school trip.  It's just that I'd have to share a room with strangers...in an enclosed area...when I might be feeling ''high strung'' with anxiety from the crowds...I need time to calm down.

And if we have to go back on monday morning, there is a possibility that I'll be missing lectures.  I do not want to miss lectures.  I love going to my lectures, I have never missed one, nor do I intend to do so unless I'm extremely ill, which even then, I would probably and try to go.

I know what I'll have to tell her.  I'm just not sure how to tell her, so I'm hoping for some other type of solution.

General Land Before Time / Death and Burial in the LBT community....
« on: November 04, 2010, 02:45:34 PM »
Well this is indeed a ''morbid'' topic, which I do apologise for, but as I've just finished reading Death and Burial in ancient Rome for another essay (and taking a break before further reading), it got me thinking how death is dealt with in LBT.
Whilst, i do indeed realise that actual dinosaurs did not host burials or mourn their dead, mostly like today on studying certain animals (barring elephants and certain apes such as bonnobos (spelling check?), they'd probably would be left to be scavenged and decompose that way...however, LBT is a different world.  Not only is LBT a cartoon but the dinosaur community personifies human characteristics and as human characteristics, burial rituals can be defined as such.. (if that makes sense?)

Well, anyway it'll be interesting in seeing responses to this.
