Title: Cheyenne hospitalized
Post by: DarkHououmon on March 30, 2010, 01:47:41 AM
My dog, Cheyenne, has been hospitalized at the nearest emergency hospital. He has been having issues standing up, has been crying in pain anything he tries to readjust his body or get up. He has been walking pretty slow and eventually couldn't get up at all. Dad was going to wait until tomorrow to get him to a vet, but Cheyenne's condition just got worse and he also got frightened, started to stiffen up, had glazed over eyes, and it looked like he was having a small seizure.

So Clint, dad, and I took him to the nearest emergency hospital for animals, about 45 minutes away. He was taken into the back and, according to a doctor, he was having continuous mini-seizures and his heart rate and breathing was abnormally high. Once payments were settled, he was immediately given a drug that calmed him down. We did hear a dog whining in the back and we were worried it was Cheyenne but it was another dog. Cheyenne was sleeping comfortably the whole time while they did bloodwork and X-Rays, which we stayed to see the results of.

X-Rays were good. No internal bleeding, no obstructions, nothing that was cause for alarm. Surprisingly, his hips looked good for his age. And bloodwork, though a few things such as white blood cells were elevated, didn't have anything that was cause for alarm; none of the elevations were severe far as we know.

But unfortunately, as of now, we have no answers. The doctor says it could be a brain tumor causing the epilepsy, he could be diabetic, could be something else. Tomorrow, dad is going to get him to our family vet so they can do further diagnostics on him. Before we left, we did see Cheyenne and he was calm and stable and looked much better than he did before. Hopefully tomorrow there'll be more answers as to what's wrong with him. My dad thinks he may have to be on medication. I'll update as we get more information.

Oh. God. I'm sorry to hear that. Having a pet be sick is never easy, especially if that pet is close to one's heart. You have my deepest condolences.

Oh gee Kacie.. I hope your dog will be alright.. Best wishes from me and my family.. :) At least your dog shows when in pain, our dog doesn't do anything and we can only guess for days before she even starts showing signs..

Oh dear. I hope that the cause will be found and that it will be something that can be mended
I am surprised the vet would guess diabetes as a possible cause for unlike the symptoms are entirely different for dog than they are for a human untreated diabetes should not cause actual pain but more likely lethargy, excessive thirst, and general weakness.
I hope for the best Kacie.

I hope your pup gets better.

It's always scary to see an animal in distress and not be able to figure out what is wrong with it.  Hopefully everything will be okay with Cheyenne.

Man, that really sucks.  I hope he gets better soon!  I recently had to take Joe (my dog) into the vet.  He was having really bad diarrhea...like really bad.  So bad that I was thinking he might have a bad liver or something.  He would go 20+ times per day and it would be a lot of it.  He's always had problems in that area, but never that bad.  We took him in and she put him on a special (and very expensive if I may add) diet.  It has helped, but he's still getting diarrhea on occasion.  I hope that both of our dogs are able to continue living long and happy lives.  From the sound of things, both your dog and mine are getting up in age.  It's really sad to have to see 'em go.  :cry

Update: I just called my dad today regarding Cheyenne's condition. Dad said they figured out what the problem was. My dog has advanced diabetes. After all this time of seeing him slowly get up, thinking it was just because of his hips and age, it turned out it was because he was getting very weak. The doctors aren't sure if he'll make it, but they are giving him insulin shots every hour to help him.

Sorry to hear that.  Realistically, the odds seem to be very much against Cheyenne, but hopefully this case will be different.  The last thing I ever wish to do with pets is have to have 'em put to sleep.  It's a very hard decision and leaves one wondering whether or not they did the right thing .  I hope Cheyenne gets better.

That's a real shame about your dog Kacie. I hope everything works well.

My dog had the same problems, except he was suffering from cancer, so I know what you are going through. Again, I hope everything works out.

Wow, I hope your dog gets out of this OK. I work at a veterinary clinic, so I see stuff like this a lot. I think I've actually seen something pretty similiar to this, actually. How old is Cheyenne?

Hello:
I also have pets and I have been around them since always, so I understand how you feel DH.
As I told you on MSN, I really hope Cheyenne will come out of this situation safely.

We don't know his exact age because we never had him as a puppy. We guess he's around 12 or 13.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog Kacie.  :(

The last time I owned a pet was 8 years ago, but I remember what that can be like.

There was a case at the clinic a few months ago with a dog with roughly the same condition, and that's what it turned out to be. Sorry, I feel like I'm being annoying. I hope Cheyenne get better! :)

Brief update. Cheyenne's doing a lot better. They got his blood sugar down to normal, where it should be, and some strength has returned to his legs.

Yes it was. They're working on stabilizing him more so they can figure out how much dosage of insulin he'll need for the rest of his life.

Just spoke with my dad today. He says Cheyenne's doing better. They are learning how to give him his insulin shots. He still needs help walking, though. But the good news is that he is returning home today.

That's a relief to hear about Cheyenne. I hope his condition continues to improve. :yes

How does he handle the insulin injections? Is he one of those pets that hates getting shots, or is he pretty good about it?

Cheyenne came home last night and, while he still needed help to get up, he could walk unassisted except on hard floors because they're slippery for him. He has a urine catheter attached so we don't have to take him outside all the time for him to pee. Today, I woke up and saw he was walking around pretty fine and even saw him get up unassisted, so he's doing much better now. We think he'll be pretty much back to normal by tomorrow if everything goes all right. The only thing that's changed is that now he has to have insulin shots daily to keep his strength up.
