The Fridge / Talk like a Pirate Day! Sept. 19
« on: September 18, 2008, 03:14:22 PM »
Hey all!

As a few of you may know, Sept. 19th is international "Talk like a Pirate day!" as seen here:
http://www.talklikeapirate.com/
http://www.talklikeapirate.com/piratehome.html

As a rather savvy pirate fan ( :p ) I couldn't help but see if we can get this going here on the GoF for a day!

So let's see what ye scurvy dogs got!  Get some pirate talk posts going around here for a day and have some fun!
I've got a little extra incentive: Anyone I see Talking like a Pirate will receive a bit of treasure at the end of it all! B)  :yes

If you talk like a pirate tomorrow and I miss ya, post back, PM me, yell at me, make me walk the plank, something!  I'll get ya your reward! :)

The Fridge / Hey everyone! In need of some support! :D

Hockey has always been a fairly big thing here in Canada and last year was the final year of the theme song to "Hockey Night in Canada", the TV program that shows most of the pro hockey games here.

The previous theme song was removed from the show due to legal problems, but this may not be an entirely bad thing.  As a result, they are holding a contest seeking a new theme for Hockey Night in Canada, which I couldn't help but jump on. B)

I haven't done much composing at all in the last couple of years so I was a bit rusty with this but I was able to meet all of the requirements for the contest (hours!) before the August 31st deadline (partly why I was taking a break from programming and most everything else until now).

I will, however, need some votes to have a hope at advancing!  For now, the officials are picking the top 200, I believe.  Anyone who wants to check out my theme, give me some comments and a nice rating would be much appreciated! :D

My theme can be heard here:
http://anthemchallenge.cbc.ca/mediadetail/329090

Yes it's only 35 seconds long, but the one of the requirements is that it needs to be a minimum of 15 seconds and able to be made into a 30 second length with reasonable simplicity.  I feel I've done that (if you cut the intro, it's 30 seconds. :) )

There are some rewards for even semi-finalists (top 20) so my goal is to make it that far! :D  The 1st place prize is exceptionally beefy ($100,000 cash + performance royalties :D), though I'm not sure my theme is quite perfect enough to make it there.  Ehh, one way to find out, I guess.. :p

Ratings, comments and votes (I'll need votes if I make it to the top 200, in October) are Much appreciated!  Thank you everyone!
I know it's a pain to have to register in order to comment or rate. <_<  :P:
How about this: I have cookies!  Lots of cookies! (....I stole some of them from Iris :p  Thanks! :D   Couldn't resist, they're good! :p) Everyone who rates or comments gets cookies! :D

Again, My theme can be heard here:

(btw, the site has been rather slow the last couple of days)

Hi!

In this topic, we can post detailed descriptions of tasks, maps, etc. of the tutorial area of the valley.  This tutorial area will be the first fully-functional region of our LBT game world and it will be getting all of our attention until it is complete.

Sound Off! / Me playing random songs :P
« on: July 15, 2008, 08:38:37 PM »
Hey, I'm starting up this topic where I'll be posting audio and video (maybe video, we'll see :p) clips of me attempting to play random songs on the keyboard.

I'm going to start this off with the intro to the Nightwish song, Amaranth:

Nightwish - Amaranth (opening)

I can kind of play the whole song with the right hand but not with the left hand yet. :p
If you're curious though, here's what happens when I try to play the full song. :lol
(I'm playing a keyboard arrangement I wrote. I wrote this with the intention that it is the accompaniment to a flute playing the lead part.  When playing the right hand by itself here, I play some of the lead stuff in this recording, just because...)
Amaranth full, attempted to play :p

If anyone is interested in a PDF of the sheet music I wrote up, I'm willing to share it.
More songs coming eventually! :p

Hi all,

Sound Off! / Dreamgale
« on: June 25, 2008, 07:20:26 PM »
This has to be one of the more unique-sounding bands I've heard in quite awhile: Dreamgale.

The best analogy I can come up with is probably: Evanescence and Savage Garden mixed together.  The male lead vocalist is absolutely Outstanding and the songs are pleasant to listen to: Fun, upbeat and interesting without being overly harsh.

Their songs tend to be about fantasy/world events in general.

I just wish they had more songs...

This one is probably closest to "a male version of Evanscence" for actual sound, but the vocalist is still rather pop-ish, yet refined and mature.

Hey all,
I'm mainly setting up this topic for myself, so I can keep track of programming progress and overall game development.  If anyone has anything to add here, feel free of course. :)

A few tips on how this is set up:
Link: A link to the latest version of the game.

New Stuff: What's been added since the previous version.

Known bugs: Stuff that I know is broken or not working "properly".
[FIXED!] is a tag I will edit in once I have fixed the bug.  This fix will appear in the *next* version.  The posted link will still have the bug

Coming soon: Likely to appear within the next version or two.

NEW STUFF IN THIS VERSION:
1) Multiplayer support up to 100 players in one game (lag will depend on location, the number of players in the game and internet connection quality). Players in the game can see each other move. Players can also chat in-game.
HOST GAME and JOIN GAME features are now functional. Read the instructions file for details on how to play multiplayer.

2) Sky background. It's still pretty rough, with the seams at the "corners" but it's a lot nicer than the green background.

3) Daytime-style lighting

4) Shadows have been disabled on the cube for now, until I can make everything nice and pretty.

Anyway, now for the important stuff:
I recommend we playtest this using Hamachi to run it over a LAN. I have not yet set up ports for internet play. We can *try* internet play but I cannot guarantee good results. It hasn't been tested at all.

Known Bugs:
1) The START button on the JOIN GAME screen does NOT actually join the game. The ENTER key does. The START button does something from an old version, where it starts the game in a weird single-player mode. Don't use it.
[EDIT] FIXED!

2) The cubes don't have the proper shadows on them. I disabled shadowing for now to speed up rendering on slower computers. I also want to play around a bit more with the graphic effects before I start turning on a bunch of stuff.
[EDIT] This will not be changed any time soon.

3) The OPTIONS screen still doesn't let you change anything.
[EDIT] FIXED!

4) If you type text longer than 200 characters before pressing ENTER, the results will be unpredictable. I want to put a limit on this soon so you physically can't type more than that, but I haven't done it yet.

5) Players are not yet notified when somebody joins or leaves the game.

6) If one player leaves the game, the host isn't properly notified yet. That cube may not disappear from the game. New players who join may be assigned to a weird ID number. This means that if you leave and join the game enough times, you will eventually overload the 100 player limit. I'm not freeing up ID numbers yet.

7)The text will flicker a bit, moreso on slower computers. I am looking into a fix for this. I think I know the cause, I just need to figure out some clever way around it.
[EDIT] FIXED!

8) Players are not yet able to input their usernames into the game. As a result, the chat just simply shows the text that was sent. It doesn't show who sent it. You may not want to use the game as an instant messenger just yet.
[EDIT] FIXED!

9) Backspacing in the chat system doesn't work very well.
[EDIT] FIXED!  Backspacing now works as expected. :)

10) The angle the player is facing is not yet sent over the network, just their physical location.

COMING SOON:
1) Basically, fix everything that's broken.  (In progress)
2) The beginnings of the development of 3d models of the Great Valley map.

Time for another new topic!

This one is for talking about the playable characters themselves:
What types of characters, what species, and what each character can do!

Each class (longneck, threehorn, etc.) and each species (apatosaurus, diplodocus, etc.) will have unique abilities.
We need to come up with as many ideas as we can for abilities that our playable dinos will develop as they gain levels.

Eventually we can also decide on the maximum possible level, at what levels each skill is learned, ways to learn secret skills, what actually happens when you reach a new level, and so on.

Anyway, we'll start with something Malte came up with:  a list of playable character classes and a few species available to each class:

Quote
Malte says (4:13 PM):
Longneck: Apatosaurus, Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus
Swimmer: Saurolophus, Lambeosaurus, Corythosaurus (more possibilities here)
Malte says (4:13 PM):
Flyer: Pteranodon, Rhamphornychus (spelling), Guido
Malte says (4:14 PM):
Threehorn: Triceratops, Pachyrhinosaurus, Chasmosaurus
Malte says (4:14 PM):
Spiketail: Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Nodosaurus
Also, fast-runners will be a playable class of dinos.  Fast runners will include dinos like Ruby.

Size classes:
There are two size classes, "Small" and "Large".  All "Small" Dinos share some abilities while all "Large" dinos share other abilities.

Brief stats on each class, still up for discussion.
Stats are on a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the highest:

Longneck:
Size: Large
Strength: 7

Threehorn:
Size: Large
Strength: 9

Swimmer:
Size: Small
Strength: 3

Flyer:
Size: Small
Strength: 2

Spiketail:
Size: Large
Strength: 10

Fast Runner:
Size: *Medium*
Strength: 6

Some abilities unique to each class:
Longneck:
Reach - The longneck is able to reach objects buried up high in trees and on ledges.
This skill may not be possible to level up.  Not yet decided.

Dash - Every dino has the ability to "Sprint" away from danger, increasing their speed for a short time.  Longnecks have the ability to perfect this techinque.  As Dash levels up, the length of time the longneck is able to sprint before getting tired is increased.

Tail Whip - Long neck, long tail!  Longnecks are able to use their tails for variety of purposes. Less destructive than the Spiketail's tail but faster.

Threehorn:
Charge - Takes a couple of seconds to "build up" before use.  The threehorn charges headfirst into the target object.  Useful for destroying/moving rocks, bushes, etc.  As it levels up, it is able to destroy larger and heavier objects.

Swimmer:
Swim Speed - The swimmer has the ability to learn to swim faster than any other creature.  At level 1, the swimmer is only slightly faster than the other dinos in water.  As the skill levels up, the swimmers speed in water becomes faster.

Underwater Fitness - All dinos can swim underwater for a short time but the swimmer is capable of improving the maximum time they can spend underwater before having to come up for air.  As Underwater Fitness levels up, the swimmer's maximum amount of time underwater increases.

Flyer:
Flight (duh :p) - At character level 1, every flyer is like Petrie in LBT 1 (or any other dino, for that matter!): unable to fly at all.  When a flyer learns this ability (as early as character level 2, probably), the flyer will be able to take off and fly.  As Flight levels up, the maximum height above the ground is increased and the maximum time you can spend in the air is increased.  At maximum level, Flight gives a flyer virtually unlimited flight freedom.

Spiketails/clubtails:
Tail Whip - The back end of a spiketail is what makes them unique!  Spiketails can use their tails for everything from taking down trees to bashing dents in the ground.  I'm sure we'll find a good use for these skills at some point in the game.

Charge - Like the threehorn, the Spiketail can headbutt objects to destroy or move them.  Less destructive power than the Threehorn's version (no horns on their head) but more capacity to move objects than the Threehorn (due to being heavier than the Threehorn).  Combined with a Threehorn or other Spiketails, Charge can be used to move very heavy objects.

Fast Runners:
Lift/Carry: Fast runners are large dinos with hands, able to carry and transport relatively large objects.  As this skill levels up, the fast runner will be able to lift heavier objects (rocks, etc.) as well as carry more objects over a distance.

Dash - Every dino has the ability to "Sprint" away from danger, increasing their speed for a short time.  What would a fast runner be that couldn't...run...fast? :p
The fast runners have the ability to improve their sprint speed and duration, similar to longnecks.

Skills for all Small dinos:
Stealth - Small dinos are able to use their size to sneak around and hide from enemies or any creature they may not want to see them.

Skills for all Large dinos:
Transport - Large dinos are able to carry smaller dinos on their backs.  This could prove to be useful in some situations.

Team Skills that require both dino sizes:
Carry: A small dino with a large dino can team up to carry large quantities of objects.  Basically, the objects and the small dino ride on the large dino's back, with the small dino holding them there in place.

Skills available to all dinos:
Sprint - Every dino will be able to sprint for a short time before getting tired.  Sprinting is designed to help the player get out of danger.

Rescue - Every dino is able to try to rescue another dino from a stuck situation, such as falling in a tar pit.  The limitation to this skill that is one is only able to rescue dinos of your size and smaller.  Small dinos cannot pull large dinos out of tar pits. :p

We need more ideas for skills and abilities!  Anybody have cool ideas? :D

LBT Multiplayer RPG Project Discussion / Tasks / Adventures
« on: June 19, 2008, 04:32:06 PM »
Hey!

If you have any ideas for tasks that the players can take on, feel free to post them here!

What is a Task?

A Task is a quest, basically.  A task is given to the player, either from a non-player character (NPC), from finding something that triggers the start of a task.  Basically, it's an assignment that the player may (nor may not, if they choose) do that will reward them in some way when it's completed.

Some tasks are relatively simple.  Some will be more complex and some are designed to be impossible to complete alone and calling upon your dino friends is necessary to accomplish it.

If you have any ideas for tasks, please throw them up here and we'll consider them for the game!  If we end up using your idea in the game, your name will appear in the credits. :)

The main game world will need quite a few graphics later on but I'm still working out the details on that.  Here's what I know so far:

LBT Multiplayer RPG Project Discussion / Game content
« on: June 19, 2008, 04:35:33 AM »
Okay, we're making a multiplayer LBT game....great, what do you do in it?
Well.....

Here's the topic where we answer that question! B)

First of all, I'll post up what I'm picturing this game to be like:

First and foremost, this game is intended to be a social experience: a place for LBT fans to log in and chat while having fun with their characters.

The game takes place ENTIRELY online.  When you run the program, you have the option to either host an online game or join an online game.  If you want to play by yourself, just don't tell anybody you have a game hosted.  We can possibly set up the option to password-protect games if we need to as well.

The game will NOT have a central server, meaning that anyone can host a game.

When you host or join a game for the first time, you will be given the option to create a new character: a dino of approximate the Gang's age.  YOu will be able to choose one of a number of dino types: Swimmer, Flyer, Longneck, Threehorn, Spiketail, perhaps more as we decide on more content.  You will be able to personalize your dino a bit by changing the colour, gender and size (somewhat).  The amount of customization will depend on how well I can get the programming working and how good I get at 3D modelling. :p
(NOTE: You will be able to create and save multiple characters on one computer.)

Once you choose a dino, you'll be able to name him/her.  Once you have chosen a name, you are placed into the world as that dino.  You start off at your nest in the Great Valley (or perhaps in a sort of central meeting place in the Valley, as opposed to your nest).

Now...what can we do?

Like any good LBT dino kid, you can explore things!  Your character will gain experience points by exploring the world.  For each region of the map that you explore, you will gain so many points (based on a few factors, such as the difficulty of reaching that region as compared to your character's level).  After you reach a threshold of points, your character gains a level.  When you gain a level you are able to learn new skills and/or improve existing skills.
The actuall skills available to each dino have not yet been decided on.

Fighting will probably exist in the game but it will occur EXTREMELY rarely, only with the situation absolutely demands it.  As a result, most of your character's experience points will come from exploring and completing "tasks".

Tasks come from non-player characters (NPCs), such as Grandpa Longneck (for example).  Talking to an NPC will result in possibly getting a task from them for you to do.  Some tasks are too complex or difficult for a single dino to manage on their own, so you must group up with other players to succeed.

The idea of the game is to let your character explore more of the world as he/she levels up.  By the time you reach the maximum possible level, you will be able to explore nearly all of the world, depending on the skills you have chosen to upgrade.  A max. level longneck will never be able to swim as deep/long as a max. level swimmer, of course, so there are limitations based on your dino.

Tasks could be as simple as "explore this area" or "bring me 10 pinecones" (though carrying 10 pinecones at once would be rather difficult for any dino :p) to as complex as "These sharpteeth have made their home in a cave very close to my nest.  Please, help rid the area of these monsters so I can raise my family in safety!" (for example).  The latter task would require much more skill and technical ability, as well as teamwork and coordination to succeed.

As for what else we can have the players do besides just wander around collecting tasks from NPCs...
That's what we need to decide on.
Kor suggested earlier that perhaps sports/games would be a nice addition, such as the soccer-like game played in the TV series, where players can get together and play in the Valley.  I'd love to do that but it won't be for much later, due to programming complexities.

Options that players can turn on at any time, such as "Invite group to play Hide and Seek".  Members of the group then can start a game in whatever area of the world they're in, just randomly, for fun.

What other cool stuff could we throw into the game?

I'd love to have a day/night sky system, so we can show the scenery at different times of day.  Perhaps some special events will only occur at certain times of day (like the Night Flowers in the Valley of Mists) that we can play with.

Bottom line:
I'm looking for a pleasant social game where LBT fans can get together and enjoy LBT like never before.  How can we best do this?

LBT Multiplayer RPG Project Discussion / The game needs a name!
« on: June 19, 2008, 03:57:55 AM »
So, we have this cool 3d multiplayer LBT game....what do we call it?
Multiplayer, huge world, lots of cool stuff to explore...

I'm thinking...
The World Before Time.

or perhaps, on the title screen:

The Land Before Time
The World Before Time

with the two lines.

Does anyone have any ideas for a name for a 3d adventure-RPG LBT game, designed for a multiplayer environment?

LBT Multiplayer RPG Project Discussion / Map - Great Valley
« on: June 19, 2008, 03:47:43 AM »
Here we can discuss the design of the Great Valley map and its surroundings.

Malte and Iris have been working on developing maps for us.  With their permission I'd like to post their maps here for further discussion.

Our goal: To create a 3d map of the Great Valley that contains within it, all of the important landmarks of the LBT film series, as many geographical locations from the movies as possible, and an overall resemblance to the valley that know and love in the films.

Because the Valley's design is inconsistant, we will need to use our wits and "engineer" a single Great Valley from the bits and pieces we know from the films.  Malte and Iris have both done very good jobs with this so far and I want to continue the development of the map of the Great Valley until we agree on a final design for it.

Once we reach that conclusion, I will work on converting a paper or 2d drawing into a 3D version for our game.

56
Hi all!

I set up this subforum for the LBT 3D Multiplayer RPG project.  The project has come far enough at this point that it's showing real signs of life, so I figured we might as well have a nice, cushy studio to work on it from. :D

This is a potentially large-scale game which will require a lot of time and effort to get decent results from.  We have a basic 3d movement engine working, as well as multiplayer support over LAN / internet (up to 100+ players, so that's not an issue. ;) )

What we need now is game content...and people to develop it!

Here's what I'd like to do in the relatively near future before we push ourselves too, too hard:

Maps:

We need a map of the Great Valley.  Malte and Mumbling (Iris) have been kind enough to look over the movies and screenshots and engineer maps of what the Great Valley could look like.  Malte and Iris, if I may post those maps here?  I want to get permission first before I just post them up.

We need to agree on what a map of the great valley would look like so we can make a 3D map of it for our game.  I intend to build the actual 3d maps for the game myself unless others wish to volunteer to do so (I can send you software if needed).

Eventually we'll want maps of locations other than the Great Valley.  The Great Valley is just our "concept game".  Once we get that working, we'll move out into other territory. Still, if people want to design maps of the Mysterious Beyond, go for it! :D  We'll probably use them eventually.

Screenshots of LBT characters:
We will eventually need to make 3d models of the Gang as well as other LBT characters.  The more screenshots you can get and send to me of LBT characters, the better!  Again, I assume I will be doing the 3d modelling.  If anyone wants to volunteer, we need people to send the 3d modellers the screenshots. :p

2D graphics:
To anyone who has played the game so far, the menus are pretty ugly, there is no interface to speak of in the game, no real eye candy at all!  We need people who are willing to fix that problem!

3D modellers:
I don't expect anyone to take on this task, but if anyone is willing to make 3d models of characters or landmarks (Saurus Rock, etc.), it's something that will need to be done eventually.  I intend to learn 3d modelling once the programming is more complete.
As for a free 3d modelling program that can do animation: Blender.

Game ideas:
A big one!
We need people with good ideas for Content to put in a multiplayer LBT game world.  If you come up with anything potentially cool, please post it!

Concept Artists:
If you have ideas for characters to add into the game, good guys or bad guys, post up pictures!   :D If you have an idea of where in the game they could go, let me know! :D
Also, if you have ideas for scenes that you want to see in the world, feel free to show us!

Anything else you have to offer:
Play testing, advice, tips, tricks, if you have anything to add to this project, please do so!

I am counting on you, GoF members to help design the greatest LBT game EVER PRODUCED!  It can be done!  It's just too much for one man.

The game will have credits, of course!  Here's what I have right now: People who have done awesome things for me and this project.  I thank you all!

LBT Projects / Always There - Solo trumpet with accomp.
« on: May 23, 2008, 01:54:57 AM »
Hey all!

More instrumental LBT songs!  Here's "Always There" on a solo 'trumpet'. :)
I think it came out pretty dang awesome, I must say!

Hope you like it!
http://search3.idrive.com/driveway/jsp/dwa...p?id=s4t0a3a0b9

(I apologize for the slight background noise.  IN order to capture the background music I had to use my cheap-o sound card, which introduces some hissing unfortunately.  It's pretty minor though.  You can really only hear it when there isn't any music playing.)

To Mumbling: I'll probably end up doing a trumpet thing of some sort for your song.

To Adam: I think you may like the sound of this one.  I was messing around with stereo separation and reverb.  I may have gone a little too hard on both but I'm still experimenting.  ;)

Gamers Zone / GoF PC Games!
« on: May 07, 2008, 01:27:35 AM »
Hey all!

I thought maybe the Gang of Five could set up times to maybe play some PC games together, if we have any games or gaming interests in common.

First of all, I'll link everyone to a program called "Hamachi".  Basically, Hamachi will let us set up a virtual network and let us set up online games extremely easily, free of firewalls and all that clutter that gets in the way of making online gaming work properly.
https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp?lang=en

Hamachi works exactly like a home network, for those of you that have one.  I have already set up the GoF Gaming network so all everyone else needs to do is connect to it. :)  Once you have Hamachi and you connect to our network, the network will behave Exactly like a LAN (Local Area Network) just like we're all in the same house.  This means that to play online games, we just need to start a LAN game and go!  Simple as that. B)

I have already set up a network on Hamachi, with the following information:
Network name: GoFGaming
Password: PM Me if you're interested.  I will give you the password.  I'd just rather not have it public, for security reasons.

It is all Case-sensitive so bear that in mind when typing it in.

The network is very secure and there is no way we can hack into each others' computers so don't worry about that.  All the network will really do is let us chat and appear on the same LAN together, for gaming purposes. That's it.  It's by far the easiest way to get online gaming to work these days though, with all the firewalls and whatnot.  Also, the lag is minimal and performance has been great, from what I've tried out with Littlefoot Fan.

Here are a few games I'd be game for pulling out:
Serious Sam (any of them.  I have all of them).
Diablo 2 (Expansion preferrably)
Unreal Tournament (any.  2004 preferred.)  I have some great game modes for UT 2004 for a lot of people, if we can get a few people interested (including 4-team Capture the Flag, which is Awesome)!
Turok 2
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2
Halo
Anything else that anyone can think of.

If anyone is interested in playing Serious Sam or any UT game (except UT 3) but you don't have the game, let me know and we'll figure something out. :)

LBT Projects / If We Hold On Together (my olllld rearrangement)
« on: April 21, 2008, 12:50:15 AM »
Hey all!
I thought I'd share this music track with everyone, even though it's an older, incomplete work.  I haven't released this before except to a couple of people.  I'm not especially proud of the quality; I made this with older virtual instruments and I was just starting to learn FL Studio when I made this.

This is the opening, first verse and chorus of If We Hold On Together in a totally unique instrumental arrangement, written back in 2005.  This is for LBT collectors everywhere who want something a little different in their collection. B) Honestly, it's not bad but it's not among my best work.  It has a slightly different atmosphere from the original; I'll leave it at that. B)

Enjoy!

Computer and Electronics / Home Theatre / TV - Standard or High Def?
« on: April 21, 2008, 12:37:42 AM »
I'm just curious, what kinds of TVs does everyone have?  What are the TVs used for?  Watching TV?  Watching movies?  Playing video games?  Has anyone watched blu-ray movies at home or have a cool home theatre system?  Anyone hoping to upgrade their TV experience in the future?  Anyone have an X-Box 360, PC or PS3 using HDMI cables for full-HD?

I know myself, I've got a 33" CRT TV (an older tube TV) running at 480i resolution.....and a PS3 with a few blu-ray movies. :lol I also have an older DVD player and a VHS player hooked up to it as well.

I have a hard time buying new movies on DVD now that I have a blu-ray player (built into the PS3).  I'd rather future-proof my movie collection as soon as possible so as to not have to buy them again later.
*Hoping for LBT on blu-ray!* :wow

I'm hoping to abuse my staff discount at Future Shop/Best Buy to buy a shiny new TV in the next couple of months, but we'll see. B)
