The Fridge / Why do people obsess about zombies?
« on: March 21, 2017, 09:47:33 PM »
Zombies offer us a unique kind of horror:

They're as close to people as one can get without having any personhood, or fundamental traits that make something a person.

This is why zombies can't simply be interchanged for some other kind of horrific beast: The ability to experience something that's resembles a person, yet has no moral code, and no ambitions or goals outside of committing a murderous rampage, is what gives zombies their unique place in horror.

Basically, the zombie fills a role similar to a sociopath or serial killer, but without the aspect of them legitimately being people. This means taking a shotgun or chainsaw to them feels less horrible and more rewarding than doing the same to a sociopath.

It's kind of the best of both worlds: You get a monster that's basically a human, but without any moral code and without any of the negative repercussions that come from killing one when you're threatened by it.

Gamers Zone / Nintendo Switch
« on: March 02, 2017, 05:07:17 PM »
I'm not really seeing anything on the Switch that appeals to me yet.

I'll give it some more time but I'm not sold that it's something that makes sense for me.

Its exclusive lineup is fairly weak, considering what I'm personally looking for. It's non-exclusives seem better-suited to playing on other platforms (especially PC). Its portability isn't very useful or interesting to me. Its controllers are quite unappealing (I know I can get pro controllers but getting a bunch of them just doubles the cost of the console that still doesn't have appeal, as I stated above).

Pass.

This would be pretty cool!

At first glance, I feel it would be nice to sort the music in this thread by genre and subgenre as appropriate. This would:

1) Help people find music they're more likely to enjoy

2) Help people understand what they're listening to so they can maybe find more and

3) Save people time by helping them skip over music they're not likely interested in.

I don't know about you but if I just saw a giant un-organized list of music links, I'm not too likely to bother going through them all one by one. :p

Gamers Zone / PS4 and PS4 Pro
« on: November 17, 2016, 10:19:44 AM »
If you haven't heard of it, the PS4 Pro is a higher-specced PS4 intended to display content for 4K TVs. It doesn't actually render games in 4k (as that requires more processing power than even a high-end PC has to maintain 60 frames per second at all times) but the idea is that it is more powerful to handle VR gaming and generally support better performance in games and better graphics.

I was considering picking up a PS4 Pro, as I don't have a PS4 yet...until I found an article that talked about a reason why that may not be the best idea.

Initially I expected PS4 games to just...run better on the PS4 Pro because it was more powerful. Reports are showing, however, that because the Pro is more powerful, developers are cranking up graphic quality when a game is played on the Pro in many cases. As a result, performance can actually be LOWER than running the game on the PS4 basic console because it's running higher detail levels.

Basically, the conundrum is this: Which console will be better-suited for getting the best possible experience over the years?

The Pro is more powerful but if developers push it too far, with no option to turn these enhancements off (which it won't let you do because it's a console, let's be honest. Graphics options aren't things you get in console games), games might perform worse than the same game on the basic console.

On the flipside, since the Pro is more powerful, intuitively it makes sense that's the one you want to get if you want to guarantee longer-term maximum-quality experiences in general...right?

Does anyone have any thoughts about these consoles? Which one makes more sense to you guys?

Thanks Tim.

I'll be honest, it still sounds very good after so long.
I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

I'm glad it's still seeing some use after all these years. I originally wrote that arrangement for one of our Gang of Five karaoke projects. There's a version of that music with a large number of GoF members singing the full lyrics to the song, including myself. In an effort to deal with the fact that everyone was recording on a different mic, I drowned the vocal parts in noise reduction and reverb and in hindsight probably over-processed the crap out of it, but that's okay. The alternative was pretty rough, too, so I made a call and ran with it. :p

At least for myself though, I use the term "singing" quite loosely. Singing was never exactly a strong skill of mine.  :lol

I still have that version posted up online if you're curious:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B96eLzW5-...cF9GcWk5M0V3bkk

At 1:28 in this vocal version, you can hear myself, tobeysan and Amethyst singing the second verse and second chorus. This was especially memorable for me because the 3 of us are friends in real life and we actually got together in tobeysan's basement, rigged up some audio equipment and recorded all 3 parts together, simultaneously on 2 computers and 3 microphones (panning 1 mic left and 1 mic right to capture both vocal parts independently).

I have an outtake recording of Tobeysan trying to sing the song for the first time and not knowing the lyrics. :lol Ah, good times!

Actually, lemme find that because it's funny....

[EDIT] HA! Here we go! :D

I made an instrumental arrangement of If We Hold On Together about 10 years ago (so the virtual instrument tech isn't quite up to par but I don't think it's awful). It's completely different from the original song but you're welcome to use it if you wish.

It can be downloaded here:

It's basically impossible to get internet here at all for $40 / month. :p

The cheapest plan I'm aware of around here is $55 / month. It's 5 Mbps.
I'm only paying $25 more than that for 180 Mbps. I'm okay with that.  :D

Yeah it's a really dumb tier system. :p

Wow you have a great internet speed. Must pay quite a bit for it.
Not bad considering how fast it is! $80 per month.

It'd be great though if this tune got a little more appreciation and acknowledgement by the world and not simply be ignored just because it's not the mainstream tune everybody uses smile.gif
I will agree with this. I think it's pretty safe to say that most people who haven't studied music wouldn't even be aware of the fact that this debate exists or would ever have a concept of "standard tuning" in their minds. I know until I was exposed to the idea of standard tunings, I just figured an A was an A and a C was a C and that's how it was. The idea of there being different options didn't even exist as a concept to me.

My local ISP is doing a wicked promo on their new high-end internet plan. It's cheaper than my old rate and the speed is nuts!

Sound Off! / 440 Hertz vs 432 Hertz discussion
« on: August 30, 2016, 08:04:26 PM »
I don't really have a strong opinion on this issue. What I will say is that having a standard makes everyone's life SO MUCH NICER!

Knowing that A=440 Hz for everything I do eliminates any problems.

There's a similar debate on whether we, as humans, should be using Base 12 for numeric work rather than Base 10. Base 10 was chosen fairly arbitrarily, for simple reasons such as having 10 fingers to count with. Base 12, however, would have simplified a lot of things in mathematics according to a number of experts.

At this point though, Base 10 is so ingrained into our society that the gains of switching to base 12 are offset by the extreme difficulty of making the switch. Same issue with QWERTY keyboard. DVORAK exists but it's far from ubiquitous despite being a "better" keyboard layout as it was designed with speed and comfort in mind, versus QWERTY which was designed to minimize typewriter jamming. QWERTY (AZERTY, etc.) is simply the de facto standard because it's everywhere. It may not be ideal but it's easier and more productive than trying to switch the standard across the world.

It appears to be a similar thing with the 432 vs 440 debate. 440 is so common in modern culture, from the software common in the music industry to how students are taught in music classes. Arguing that 432 is somehow "better" is rather subjective and convincing the world to switch is likely an effort in futility.

As for me? I don't really care. Switching would be a heck of a lot of work for the world and the gains seem minimal and inconsistent from genre to genre of music. I don't really see a reason to switch globally. 432 can be a composition technique if your music calls for it and that's fine. Introducing musicians to the concept of 432 is probably a very good idea but switching standards is honestly more trouble than it's worth.

I'd switch back to Word right away if I could.

I just don't own a copy and I can't justify it because I don't *need* it over Writer for anything in particular.

In a perfect world I'd be back on Word, though. :)
