Title: Forum domain downtime
Post by: Mumbling on December 12, 2018, 01:52:49 PM
Hi guys!

If you are here, hi! Some of you will have been told to use the IP address instead of the www.gangoffive.net domain name, as the domain is currently not referring to the forum.  :opetrie

We're still trying to get to the bottom of the issue, but in the meantime, please keep using the IP. We will let you know through the available channels as soon as the forum domain link is up and running again.

However, while this is a problem, please do share the solution of accessing the forum with other GoF members. It should always be reachable through the following IP:
http://23.254.247.230

We've informed people through Discord, Facebook and the LBTFanclub deviantart page, and some of you have shared the message with your friends. However, since we have only seen about 1 post in the past 2 days, I assume many people are still not aware of the possibility to access the forum or forget the IP address. So please feel free to bookmark the IP and share it with friends who are on the GoF so that it can reach as many people as possible. Thank you!

I don't have any social media accounts, so I had to ask Rhombus on fanfiction.net (the first time in years that I had even logged into my account there). Well, I'm glad to see all the content here is still okay, and the only thing to really worry about is remembering to use the actual address (the series of numbers) rather than the one we're all so much more familiar with.

Now that I think about it, I believe it has been just over six months since we moved the forums to this new site, so I wonder if the domain name is something that has to be renewed on a regular basis. Either way, I hope you guys can figure it out soon enough.

Try bookmarking/favoriting the IP address for future ref! Glad you found access through ff.net! :)

Yes. The domain name is on auto renewal, so that's not the problem. We're looking into all the possible issues and hope that it will be resolved soon.

We have temporarily set up the domain name as a redirect, so you should be able to access the forum through gangoffive.net while we try to figure out what went wrong :)

using gangoffive.net - redirect doesn't happen for me. :(
Well, I don't have a problem to use IP as long as you solve the problem

Edit: Oh, wait, it actually works. www.gangoffive.net doesn't work (my site bookmark in browser)

Yes, for now you need to type in gangoffive.net or gangoffive.net:80 instead of www.gangoffive.net.  For some reason with the IP redirect the full address is not working.

Firefox users, it will automatically add www to anything you type in.  Be sure to use gangoffive.net:80 to prevent it from doing this.

The forum domain is now redirecting properly!  :Mo  :celebrate :celebrate :celebrate :celebrate

I hope that you all will forgive me for leaving it at that for now, but it is 2:20am over here.  I will have another post up later today providing more information.  For now, I would simply want to thank Austin, Iris, zero-point, and James Gryphon for all of their time and effort in dealing with this problem. And I would like to thank all of you members for your patience and understanding during this unforeseen downtime.  :yes

I will be talking to the hosting company a bit more later today to get a firm grasp on what went wrong, and to see about steps to prevent it from happening again.

It's back! Hooray!

This reminded me I should really archive all the RPs I participate in, my current saved copies are over two years old...

Alright, I have discussed the issue with tech support and it appears the issue was not with our forum settings or the domain, but was at Hostwinds end.  They have corrected the issue on their end and the issue should not happen again.  :)  Once again, thank you all for your patience during this time - especially Austin, zero-point, and James - we know that this was not a fun experience for anyone involved.  :yes

Yep, this year has been filled with many difficult technical issues for GoF but again, things are fine. Thanks for your work in solving this crap from me as well! :)

I'm glad this issue is finally resolved.  There is one more minor issue that needs to be worked out, but hopefully everything will be working 100% correctly in the next few days.
