Silver Screen / Kaiba
« on: January 04, 2014, 04:37:41 PM »
Hey everybody.  I don't know how many would be interested, but I thought I'd share one of my favorite animes out there, maybe see if anybody on this site has also seen it too.

Note, this is not to be confused with the Yu-Gi-Oh character of the same name.  The series, Kaiba, was released in Japan in 2008 and still has yet to see a western release or even an English dub.

The cute and kiddy artstyle can be misleading at first glance, but the story of Kaiba is actually really dark, deep and blatantly adult.  As an anime fan who prefers shows that are more obscure and character-driven, this gem was definitely a great find.

The basic premise of the show revolves around how the wealthy are able to store their consciousness in a chip that they can transfer from body to body.  However, memories of the people below them are often stolen and sold on the black market.  One day a young man awakens with a hole in his chest and no memory of who he is.  For his own safety he is sent into space, where on each world he encounters how this specific technology has affected and even destroyed the lives of other people.  As the series of 12 episodes continues forward, his own memories and dark intentions before his amnesia are slowly revealed to him.

Because there has never been an english dub, let alone a worldwide release, all that exists are English fansubs across the internet on several streaming sites, sans youtube where there are only Spanish subs from what I can find.  If one has a chance, I definitely recommend checking out this hidden gem in anime.

Silver Screen / Cloud Atlas
« on: June 09, 2013, 12:56:40 PM »
Heyall.  I was just wondering if anybody else has heard of a film called Cloud Atlas.  It is a fairly obscure title that wasn't around in theaters for very long, but I can't think of any other film that has had such a polarizing effect on critics.  People either really, really love it or really, really hate it.  I happen to lean more towards the love it side overall, though I do have some complaints.

Based on a novel written in 2004, the story, or stories, take place over the course of hundreds of years.  Showing how the actions of a single person can carry down the centuries to affect the lives of others.  An amazing set up that could have been done a lot worse.  It is a hard film to follow, really hard to follow.  But the alternation between these six different eras were surprisingly well put together.  Clocking in at 3 hours, I'd say the way this film was put together grabbed my attention more than Avatar or Les Mis ever could.

Another amazing feature is how in each story line they reuse the same actors, and one thing this film is praised for is it's amazing make-up jobs for the six or seven different characters they have to play as.

My big complaint about it though, is with my favorite story arc.  Set in a 22nd century Korea, I did enjoy the futuristic sci fi dystopian setting.  There is just one problem.  Remember the amazing make-up job this film has?  It's at this point where it turns against them.  The main protagonist, Sonmi 451 was played by a native Korean.  But most of the other cast members were white people with eye makeup to make them look Asian.  Jim Sturgess, James D'Arcy, and probably the most ridiculous of them all, Hugo Weaving, all had what would be considered "yellowface" done to make their eyes altered to look Asian, but nothing else was done to remove the white features of their faces.

Overall, that's the only complaint I have for this movie and the only big setback from making it perfect for me.  In general, I think this film was definitely an amazing thrill ride that blends genres of historical fiction, period drama, mystery, comedy, and dystopian sci fi.  For a collab between the directors of The Matrix and Run Lola Run, I think this is probably the best way they could have put together a book that was considered unfilmable.

Visual Art / Tanner's Art
« on: May 14, 2013, 12:54:35 AM »
Figured I'd start posting some of my art up here.  I've been working on a style that's less anime/manga-like in favor of a more stylized appearance.  I'm drawing mostly from Don Bluth, given how if it weren't for his movies I wouldn't be a furry in the first place. xD

Here is my most recent refsheet of my fursona.  I'm still trying to get a few things down, and I've improved on my new style a bit since I started.  I'm especially enjoying drawing humans in this new style of mine.  But for now, here is my fursona's refsheet.

Background photo taken in Kumamoto Japan by yours truly.  :p

Gamers Zone / Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
« on: May 04, 2013, 01:25:18 AM »
Okay, I will admit.  I have never played an official Far Cry game in my life.  Though I really, really want to.  So far this is the only Far Cry game I've played to date and apparently it has a few similarities to how the first Far Cry works.  But with a crazy setup similar to the cheesy and stupid B movies of the 1980s.  And that is what I really freaking love about this game!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZUueizrR0A

It affectionately parodies and references many things that make the 80s great.  If there is one thing I love more than anything, it's the sci fi and action films of the 80s.  The gusto is all there, right down the VHS tracking, scan lines, cheesy one-liners and Michael Beihn.  It's like Ubisoft Montreal knew the kind of game I wanted!  Granted, there are some people out there who might not take to it as fondly as I have, but for children of the 80s, and people who wish they were children of the 80s like myself, this is an awesome piece of stand alone DLC and for about 15 dollars, there is a lot of content to be found.

Visual Art / Fursona Refsheets
« on: February 13, 2013, 03:59:07 PM »
Heyall.  I thought it would be fun to start a topic where those on the GOF's furry community can share refsheets of their fursonas or characters if they have any.  People in the furry fandom most commonly comission refsheets or draw them themselves.  More specifically, refsheets based off "fursonas" or the furry avatar that people online identify as.  Though keep in mind, refsheets posted here have to be clean.  Since some on sites like FurAffinity can go into more detail than we're willing to read about. :lol  As an example, I will post mine first.

This is what I drew last week as a yearly update of my fursona.  Sketched on paper, scanned it, and the rest was done in Paint Tool SAI and GIMP.

Gamers Zone / Steam Box
« on: January 08, 2013, 11:14:03 AM »
Though X3i can't reveal it's name, though we suspect it's the Steam Box, they seem to work in correlation with Valve in marrying PC games with consoles.  This would allow people to play Steam games on their TV!

http://ces.cnet.com/8301-34439_1-57562655/...ston-gaming-pc/

As a console gamer, I am stoked.  A little device the size of an orange that I can hook up to my TV and play all the PC games I can't play on my mac.  It's perfect for people like me who are console gamers at heart and can't afford to build a dedicated PC.  Knowing Valve, I hope this will exceed the service provided by similar hardware such as OnLive.  Despite their delay of Half Life 3, they still haven't disappointed me yet.  I hope they don't start now.

Gamers Zone / Overused Settings
« on: October 06, 2012, 03:18:43 AM »
Though this topic may spark a bit of controversy for some, but what video game settings do you think are overused?

Personally, I think it varies from genre to genre.  The biggest problem plaguing shooters for the last decade was WWII.  I'm happy that it's seen a die-down in the last couple of years.  Now it seems like modern military shooters, which sprung up after they caught on that people were tired of WWII games, seem to be suffering the same fate.  Every one of them is the same.  COD, Battlefield, and Medal of Honor to a lesser extent.  In some ways, interstellar wars are hardly a new topic either.  But these days, it seems like modern military shooters are the ones over-saturating the market.

In terms of RPGs and RTS games, bleeding into other types of games as well, I feel it's medieval fantasy.  Especially ones that use Tolkien-esque tropes.  Skyrim, Everquest, Warcraft, and the list goes on and on.  So many tropes of western fantasy are so overused in video games that it would take a hell of a miracle to come up with something original.  What I find even more annoying is the fanbase.  The never-ending, pushy, stuck-up fanbase stereotype that shuns and humiliates you if you make the simple statement that you "just don't like it".  Granted, that subject should be discussed in another topic.

Silver Screen / Just Got Back from Amazing Spider Man
« on: June 30, 2012, 02:59:59 AM »
It just came out today in Japan, and I was one of the first to see it since midnight releases apparently don't exist in Kumamoto.   :confused

Either way.  I was pretty optimistic from the start, especially after seeing the first trailer where Spidey was in the back of a car talking smack to a carjacker.

I just got back from seeing it...  Holy crap was that the fastest two hours of my life!  I didn't think the movie was long enough because I was having a blast the whole way through it!  Anybody who said it was too early to reboot spiderman...  :slap

It kicked all three of Raimi's films so hard they should be halfway to Jupiter by now.  I don't even want to remember them anymore.   :p

And I'm not being biased because of the Lizard.  Honestly, Curt Connors is better when he's not a giant green human with a tail. :lol  What really shines here is the new Peter Parker and his relationship with Gwen Stacey.  This movie is packed with so much quick-paced emotional tension that I almost cried during the infamous scene involving a certain burglar.  And in the Raimi film, that part came off as really forced and awkward to me.

Almost everything in the movie is streamlined and cut together perfectly.  In all honesty, I wouldn't put this above the Avengers though.  That will still be the best comic book movie in my opinion for a long, long time.  But the Amazing Spider Man is a brilliant runner up for the summer movie season.

Ask Me / Photography questions?
« on: May 29, 2012, 12:40:59 PM »
I haven't contributed much to this forum in recent months, but I'd like to try!

Does anybody have any questions regarding photography?  Specifically cameras?

Plan on buying a new one?  Plan on taking a course in photography?  Being an avid hobbyist in the art of still photography, I'd be more than happy to answer any of your questions! :DD

Travel / "Adventuring" / Studying Abroad in Kumamoto, Japan
« on: September 04, 2011, 10:14:48 AM »
Hey everybody!

Just letting you all know that in four days I fly out to spend a full year in Kumamoto, Japan!  For two years now I've been working up to this point, to finally return to Japan after having enjoyed my first trip so much!  I'll be posting vlog videos throughout my stay on my youtube channel here!  http://www.youtube.com/user/ScalyGreen

The only time my online activity will be impeded is when I'm actually flying over there.  Once I get situated in my dorm I'll have my internet back.

LBT Fanfiction / Time Gate X: Red Dust
« on: February 15, 2011, 10:34:54 PM »
Thought I'd now make an official thread for this story.  I've decided to post it up on FF.net, respecting my old story's origins.  I've decided to make a few changes, including cutting the self-insert character out in place of the old story's mentor at a young age, Albrecht (or Al).  I plan on keeping it in a short novelette format, around seven to ten chapters or at least kept within the range between 8,000 words and less than 19,000.

Here's a link to the story on FF.net, I'm sure Serris will especially be glad that I've decided to bring back the idea, despite it being only a brief reduction to only the Mars plot.  I decided that after writing his story and giving it a proper completion, I'll be putting it behind me and continuing onward with my more original works.

LBT Projects / Possible Time Gate X reboot.
« on: February 15, 2011, 02:03:53 AM »
Lately, I've been thinking that maybe I should bring back Time Gate X.  One of the changes I planned on doing was replacing the main human character, who was originally a self-insert from when I was a cocky 14-year-old. :lol  Maybe with another scientist who's older and more developed.  Though this time, I plan on probably stopping it after the Mars story arc, if anyone read and knew about it before I made the stupid idea of taking it down...  The reason for the shortening of the story was because I wound up with too many plot points and decided to go through with them, big mistake as I burned out 30 chapters in.  I could put it back up on FF.net if any of my readers on this site managed to save it, though I bet that was probably wishful thinking as I gave no warning beforehand of taking it down.  And the word files are long lost from one of my old, and now dead, computers.

The Welcome Center / Back with a gritty reboot!
« on: January 23, 2011, 02:27:09 PM »
Hey everybody!  I just thought I'd make a post on the welcome forum stating that I'm returning!  The new and improved Cyberlizard2.0 is here!  This includes improved handling of RPs, more frequent activity, and the need to return in the up and coming 5th anniversary of my registry!  Because honestly, five years is the longest I've ever been registered to a forum.

Anyways, I'm finally going to be active again, and though my interest in LBT has become hazed and blurred, that still won't stop me from trying to make friends here!  As far as how I've been at handling Roleplays, I wouldn't mind participating in a few to show how much I've improved since over the years.  So I'll be seeing you all around as I start becoming a more active member again!

The Fridge / What do you miss?
« on: August 05, 2010, 04:49:19 PM »
Everybody has a multitude of things from their past, mostly their childhood, that they really, REALLY long for.  Some of them are fairly easy to obtain these days, such as old TV shows on youtube.  But they were more fun to watch on a TV and some of the good old networks are gone or in the process of decay.  Even if it's something that hasn't quite changed up until recently, say a year ago.

Here's my list:

TV:
-When there was a Sci Fi channel instead of "Syfy."
-You could still watch The Magic School Bus on PBS.
-Wishbone
-Goosebumps
-Are You Afraid of the Dark?
-Toonami
-Adult Swim pre-2009

Throughout life:
-Arcades
-Roller rinks
-The old bus outside the Hot Springs swimming pool.
-Prospector Pizza in Big Timber(Turned crappy cafe, now Chinese Restaurant)
-The old ASARCO smoke stacks in East Helena
-My Game Boy Color(lost in 2004)
-My Calvin and Hobbes collection

Role Play Discussion / Hunters of the Milky Way
« on: March 02, 2010, 04:27:42 PM »
I started a space western with the same name as this topic in the Random Roleplay section if anyone's interested.  Its really been a long time since I've started an RP here.  I hope I put enough detail into the run-down of the story.  ^..^;  It's kind of based off the old Bounty Hunters RP I started four years ago, and we can also discuss ideas and plot points on this thread.

Random Role Play / Hunters of the Milky Way
« on: March 02, 2010, 04:17:54 PM »
Its been a while since I've tried starting an RP here.  And since I'd like to become more active I figured why not?  I decided to make it a sort of reboot of my old Bounty Hunters RP that I started four years ago.  We can also discuss ideas and plot points in RP discussion  ^..^

The year is 2350…  After 400 years of space travel and nearly 150 years after the invention of the first warp drive, mankind has achieved his greatest dream, to explore and become integrated with the diverse community of the Milky Way. As these pods of human influences grew, so did their wealth as they sought to mine for precious metals.
However, as the wealth increased throughout the galaxy, those who would plunder and steal for themselves appeared.  The art of piracy was reborn in space due to the limited ability to establish universal law throughout the widely spread-out planets and colonies.  Soon, over the course of several years, a major feud formed between the space forces, human and alien alike, and the space pirate guilds.
On the brink of interstellar war, a new power started to appear.  Lone travelers, who sided with neither space pirates nor space federations.  They are called Hunters, due to a majority of them being bounty hunters that bring justice to criminals.  They single-handedly brought the beginning of an interstellar war to a stand-still as they interfered and sabotaged the plans for the space pirates to overthrow peace in the galaxy.  Unlike the law-abiding space forces or the code-obeying space pirates.  The Hunters rely on their freedom as their guide, with personalities and intentions varying from ship to ship.  The threat of interstellar war still lingers, though it is suppressed by the heroic acts of the interfering travelers wandering the frontier.

RPers can choose to either be space forces, space pirates, or a hunter.  All can be either human or any alien race he or she can think of.

Ship Name: 雪トカゲ(The Yukitokage)
AI Name: Victoria
Type: CometS777
Crew Capacity: 4
Engine Type: Hikari Long-Distance Warp Engines
Defense: Prototype AEMS(Anti-Energy Missile Shielding)
Offense: Mullan Multi-use cannons equipped with Particle Torpedoes, Plasma missiles, and launch-able tapping cables for hacking space pirate computers, and a detachable battle-issued trauma gun which is stored in the front until use.

Visual representation of the crew: http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/028..._by_Raptoid.jpg

Tanner
Side:  Hunter
Age: 18
Sex: Male
Height: 6'0
Position: Pilot/Cook
Weapons of Choice: (left-handed) Tetsubo, Katana, and sonic shotgun(delivers a concentrated sonic wave capable of shotgun-level trauma), and light shield for defense.
Appearance: Lizard hybrid. Shaggy ginger-red hair that is often parted down the middle, with green eyes, green scaly skin and a golden yellow underbelly. Often he only wears a pair of faded blue jeans, but he does wear other clothes when conditions require it.
Personality: The head bounty hunter of the Yukitokage. Tanner's personality ranges from focused and serious, to just downright goofy. But when he's after a bounty, he takes no time in bringing it down. Often criminals are taken in alive. Pirates on the other hand... Aren't so lucky. He also finds himself cooking most of the meals for the crew if they don't stop at a place to eat.

Stella
Side:  Hunter
Age: 16
Sex: Female
Height: 5'1
Position: Co-pilot/Weapons Specialist
Weapons of Choice: Plasma rifle, 50.cal railpistol.
Appearance: Shoulder-length blonde hair with jade highlights with her eyes of the same color and fair-colored skin. She wears a white tank top, and khaki-colored pants along with brown leather boots.
Personality: Stella has a very tomboy-ish nature, not being the damsel in distress type. She loves guns, and everything about guns. When it comes to bounty-hunting, she is quick to get the job done and over with. She is also Tanner's co-pilot on the Yukitokage and normally is in charge while Tanner is away.

Akira
Side:  Hunter
Age: 15
Sex: Male
Height: 5'5
Position: Tech specialist
Weapons of Choice: Pocket knife, monkey wrench, jumper cables
Appearance: Long dark brown hair tied back in a pony tail, brown eyes, and tannish skin. He wears a light green T-shirt, brown jeans, and leather work boots.
Personality: Akira is often very akward in nature due to his frequent multitasking. He is, without a doubt, a geek, in his knowledge of computer engineering and technobabble. But, that doesn't stop him from pitching in when things get dirty. He is perfectly capable of manning the ship's weapons, as well as defending himself if any hostiles board.

Kichiro
Side:  Hunter
Age: 6
Sex: Male
Length: 5'0
Position: Pet
Weapons of choice: ???
Appearance: Monitor Lizard. Slitted-pupil yellow eyes, green scales with a yellow underbelly.
Personality: "Kichi" as Stella likes to call him, is very naive. Often getting into places where he doesn't belong. Oddly enough, he is treated as if he were an actual member of the crew, even getting his own bed with a little heat lamp inside it.

As for a history:  The crew of the Yukitokage often have major disrespect towards pirates due to spending their preteen years as slaves to them. Taking on all of their sadistic and abusive behavior. Tanner's lizard-like features come from an accident during the escape at age 13, when a drum of stolen prototype biotech fluid spilled on him.
After two years of working all kinds of jobs, they saved enough money to buy a CometS777 second hand, and another year spent customizing it with fitted Hikari engines, Mullan cannons, and a trauma gun, as well as a defense system custom-designed by Akira. They eventually started earning cash by hunting bounties and have been making a living off it ever since. Kichiro came along for the ride after he stowed away on the ship during a hunt on Earth in Australia. After two years they have become fairly well-known among several of the hunters in the galaxy, and notorious among the pirate clan they escaped from five years prior.

The Fridge / Swine Flu
« on: April 29, 2009, 07:21:06 PM »
What's your take on this whole new "Swine" flu thing?  How everybody's freaking out and saying "Oh lordy!  It's going to be a pandemic!  Oh noes!"  Honestly, it's the same scare tactic they used with the Bird Flu.  I remember freaking out about it when I was pretty young. :lol   And after that I've never trusted the media since.  Honestly, 36,000 people die every year from the "regular" flu.

If anything, it's going to wind up being the vaccination that kills people.   :confused

Silver Screen / What kinds of movies do you like?
« on: May 03, 2008, 05:11:09 PM »
If you plan on flaming someone or starting an argument, I'm just going to report you to the admins.  End of story.

Just wondering what movies people are in to lately. Most movies I've been watching lately are science fiction and horror. I like watching gritty R rated Sci Fi movies like Aliens, The Matrix, Predator, and Escape from New York. I also like slasher flicks like Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, and Friday the 13th. Along with movies like Dawn of the Dead, The Exorcist, and The Hills Have Eyes.

On a friendlier spectrum, I also enjoy movies like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Big Trouble in Little China, and Back to the Future. I can't always be watching graphic R rated movies without evening things out a bit. lol
