Title: Looking for free web hosting
Post by: Sky on August 30, 2007, 11:23:56 AM
Ya, I'm looking for an free web hoster like freewebs.
Freewebs would be perfect, if there wasn't this 40MB webspace. o_O
And, if possible, a web hoster where you can delete your account anytime.

Thanks in advance. =)

Well, it's not quite that simple. I could give you some choices. First of all, I'm assuming you're dissatisfied with 40 MB of file space. Now, how good are you at HTML, or do you have a web site builder program like Microsoft Office FrontPage?

If you can get totally down and dirty with html, I can give you the name of a few sites with up to 5gb of web space.  Honestly though, you don't need it.  Freewebs is the best in my opinion.  I just use other things in conjunction with it to make it work. B)

Right now, I'm using Profuse Host (http://www.profusehost.net/). They have a web site builder, but I use FrontPage to upload my own home-made web pages. I get 2,000 MB file space and 100,000 MB of monthly bandwidth. Freewebs is good, but only because it's super easy to use. It doesn't have a lot of cool stuff in comparison to other services, and it's low on file space and bandwidth.

Now, what's this about 5 GB, landbeforetimelover? I might be interested in an upgrade. B)

The drawbacks of the 5gb one are that you have to use only their html editor and it only accepts htm code.  I personally find freewebs fine.  I just use this site to store files.  I put the links on my freewebs account. :D

Wait, you mean I couldn't make a site in a program like MS FrontPage and upload it?

Hmm...Profuse Host looks very interesting. :)
It looks like a new web hoster. *looks at forum posts* >.>

The administrator there told me they have only been around since 2005. They actually have 4 different hosting plans depending on your needs. You should compare them and see if any of the are any good for you. Should you decide to go with them, don't be afraid to contact support or me for help; I've been working with them for awhile now and am beginning to get the hang of things there. The administration there has basically bent over backwards to answer all of my questions and help me with support issues.

Here (http://www.free-webhosts.com/) is a database of free hosts, how others have rated them, and how they stack up to others. Actually, that's the site where I first heard about Profuse Host in the first place. :D

Personally, I've had so many bad experiences with free webhosting (AND paid webhosting) I don't even waste my time with it anymore.  Generally, if I ever want to put web stuff online again, I'll go to my ISP since they're largely unlikely to screw over a paying customer for their services.

Sorry I sound so negative, but it hasn't been a fun time.  Anyone who has been around long enough to see how often I've moved sites around will know. ^^  I had the best time with my last webhost, Spiral Minds ( http://spiralmindsinc.com/?x=32&y=8 (http://spiralmindsinc.com/?x=32&y=8) )...no issues, and I still speak with the owner on occasion...so it took five years to find a decent place, then I ran out of ambition and money.

Alright. So I looked some of the hosts.
But sadly, I can't make friends with those. So I decided to go back to freewebs (for now).

But then, Freewebs is actually ok (now that I know you can use html =P).
40MB is still to small.  <_<

I heard you can only have 100 files max. Is that true?
If so, is it possible to upload pictures to your website with imageshack and such? (as I will upload many pictures, the 40MB will be easily used up)
Oh, and is it possible to have multiple accounts?

Thanks again in advance. =3

I believe I already have 5 freewebs accounts.  When you set freewebs up as only hard html based, the limitation of 20 pages is eliminated (I have 170 pages and I can still add more.  I dunno what the limit is though per account).

As for adding images to freewebs without putting it on the 40mb, that's simple.  You use html and encode the page with a mini picture and perhaps a picture link.  Like this page:

http://www.freewebs.com/landbeforetimeinfo...e%20gallery.htm (http://www.freewebs.com/landbeforetimeinfo/test%20image%20gallery.htm)

It's not too hard.  This is the code to put a image from photoshop onto freewebs.  You use simple html code to add the images to the exact location you want them:

<div id="image1" style="position:absolute; left:60px; top:200px; width:177px; height:122px; z-index:1"><font size ="1">Image Taked From LBT 4 During the Song "It Takes All Sorts"</font><a href="http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/1.png"><img src="http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/1_1_1.jpg" border=0 width=177 height=122></a></div>

<div id="image2" style="position:absolute; left:260px; top:200px; width:177px; height:122px; z-index:2"><font size ="1">Image Taked From LBT 12 shortly after meeting Guido</font><a href="http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/2-1.jpg"><img src="http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/2_1_1_1.jpg" border=0 width=177 height=122></a></div>

<div id="image3" style="position:absolute; left:460px; top:200px; width:177px; height:122px; z-index:3"><font size ="1">Image Taked From LBT 12 while watching Petrie practice for the day of the fliers</font><a href="http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/3-1.jpg"><img src="http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/3_1_1_1.jpg" border=0 width=177 height=122></a></div>

<div id="image4" style="position:absolute; left:660px; top:200px; width:177px; height:122px; z-index:4"><font size ="1">Image Taked From LBT 12 right before the gang meets Guido</font><a href="http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/4.jpg"><img src="http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/4_1_1_1.jpg" border=0 width=177 height=122></a></div>

<div id="image5" style="position:absolute; left:60px; top:400px; width:177px; height:122px; z-index:5"><font size ="1">Image Taked From LBT 10. "Now wait! <div id="image6" style="position:absolute; left:60px; top:600px; width:177px; height:122px; z-index:6"><font size ="1">Image Taked From the beginning of LBT 12 where we see Tria caring for their new egg</font><a href="http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/6-1.jpg"><img src="http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/6_1_1_1.jpg" border=0 width=177 height=122></a></div>

That is true.  Case study: My lyrics site.  By the time LBT 12 came out, I needed more than 100 files to organize every song.  Freewebs capped my site at 100 files so I was forced to move to my new server.

Profuse Host has no limits of the sort. Yer limits are 2 GB file space, 100 GB monthly bandwidth, and the usual assortment of no warez, porn, cracked software, etc. CBA Studios was priorly hosted on Site Sled (http://www.sitesled.com/). It's a pretty decent host with 250 MB file space, 1 GB of daily bandwidth, and 30 GB of monthly bandwidth, but you don't get PHP, mySQL, FrontPage extensions, or any of the other fancy stuff Profuse Host offers. Both hosts, however, offer FTP file transfer for uploading and downloading files.

Alright.
I only have a simple question:

I know that deviantart don't allow hotlinking.

But what if I use this Icon (http://img-up.net/img/Sky___Guidvthbjuhz.PNG) that links to this page: http://hakunaro.deviantart.com/art/LBT-Sky...-Guido-65028347 (http://hakunaro.deviantart.com/art/LBT-Sky-and-Guido-65028347)

Would that be hotlinking?
I still don't know much about such terms. =/

Well, if ya think about it, 40mb is a crapload of html coding.  You can just host all your files via another hosting site and use freewebs solely for hosting the site and the html code.  The LBT archive is using nothing but html and only takes up about 1/35 of a meg because I use alternative file hosting options.

lbtarchive.co.nr (http://lbtarchive.co.nr)

Very handy and I especially love freeweb's web editor. :D

Of all the free wen hosts I've sampled over the past few months, Freewebs's page builder is the best I've came across. Of course, I prefer to use Microsoft FrontPage to build my web pages, so I just pick hosting where I can easily upload and update my web pages via FTP uploading using my favorite FTP client. One skilled enough in HTML coding can actually make their web pages in Notepad, and then save the file with an .html/whatever extension.

That's what I do.  I just copy and paste the html code into freeweb's editor after I'm finished with it in notepad.  Very simple. :D

Who hosts files via their webhost anyways? It's so inefficient unless you do what Manny does.
