Title: Adventuring in Europe
Post by: Cancerian Tiger on April 26, 2008, 12:47:10 AM
I'm so thrilled!  On May 22, I will be leaving for London to go on a two-week packpacking trip with other peers through much of Europe.  Here are the countries, cities and excursions we'll be experiencing:

England-London-Shop and explore the city, White Cliffs of Dover
Belguim-No stops, passing through to the Netherlands
Netherlands-Amsterdam-Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank's house
Germany-Rhine Valley-Drive along Rhine River, visit St. Goar
Germany-Munich-Glockenspiel, Marienplatz, learn how beersteins are crafted, Bavarian Beerhall dinner
Austria-Austrian Tyrol-Alpine scenery, white-water rafting, overnight stop
Italy-Venice-Motorboat to historic islands, Piazza de San Marco, Bridge of Sighs, Doges' Palace, St. Mark's Square, glass-blowing demonstration, gondola ride
Switzerland-Lucerne and Swiss Alps-excursion to top of Jungfrau Mountain, Wooden Chapel Bridge, overnight stop
France-Burgundy, Dijon's Vineyards, then Paris-Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre, Champs Elysees, Notre Dame Cathedral, visit a perfumery, cabaret show

Then I return home :P:.  This is my first time going overseas without any family members, so I'm a little anxious but far more thrilled.  Fellow European members, if any of ya have advice on additional things to see, please feel free to post them :yes.  It is greatly appreciated.  Just don't send me to a red-light district .

That's awesome!
I would love to take that tour too. I can promise you that you are bound to love it. How much time do you have for each place? There are some sights I can really recommend you to visit.
In London for example there is Natural History Museum with its huge (huge in every respect) collection of dinosaur fossils. Jason (Littlefoot1616) and I visited it in 2004. The Science museum there is also just awesome, especially as it is not the kind of museum where you can just watch, but also touch and experiment. If you happen to be in London on a Saturday the Portobello Road Street Market is also just awesome to visit. Almost nothing that you can't find there (as far as I can tell from visiting it in 1998). But be careful, your backpack might end up much heavier after visiting the street market ;)
How much time do you have in London? I'm sure Jason could telly you many more awesome places to visit.
Amsterdam is also just an awesome city. Like London it also has a Madame Tussauds waxwork museum which is really beautiful. The Anne Frank's house is of course a place of commemoration not just to her and the others who hid in the Achterhuis, but also to those who helped them and to millions and millions of others who were victims to a crime which I doubt can ever be entirely comprehended.
The drive along the Rhine river evokes some personal memories for me, for it was there, in R¸desheim that I first met another land before time fan when she was on a trip through Europe coming from Australia. Where does your Rhine trip start and where does it end?
When you come to Munich I recommend you to visit the "Deutsches Museum". It is kind of the German Counterpart to the Science Museum in London, so it is a place where you can watch many awesome experiments or do them yourself.

Maybe if you get close enough to where some GOF members live you could met them maybe.  Looks like you'll have lots of fun and see many very different places.

Lucky...that's sooner than I'm going to Ireland :p

I am going to England also, since my way to Ireland is not a one way trip

I'm biologically french and France was actually going to be the place I wanted to go, but Ireland seemed to call me much stronger.

That's sounds exciting! Without your family members, that's definitely something to be proud of!

Sure I can tell y'all about my trip :yes.  I'll keep it brief 'cuz so much happened in just two weeks.

My group and I met in London.  We toured Europe together but mostly ventured off on our own.  Aside from Buckingham Palace and guardsmen, I was able to visit the natural history museum(dinosaurs !) and walk the Oxford Street strip.  I was amazed at how much diversity exists in London :wow!  The following day, we crossed the English Channel and saw the White Cliffs of Dover before entering France then Belgium in order to get to Amsterdam.  Things got pretty wild in Amsterdam once the nightlife came around :yes.  BTW, the Red Light District is still up and running alright .  Not my idea of fun, but folks here at home had pestered me to find out if it exists :lol.  The next morning, I went to the Anne Frank house.  It felt very sad and haunting to actually be in her house.  It hit me when we entered into the Secret Annex :cry2.  Afterwords, I shopped around in Damrak Square before we left for the Rhine Valley in Germany.  The scenery is so gorgeous, and the Rhine River is dotted with castles, vineyards and the rock of Loreley(near St. Goar).  We stopped in St. Goar, where beersteins are made, and did some winetasting after dinner.  A few of us then sat by the Rhine and watched the castles light up as the sun set.  It was a nice break from city nightlife :yes.  The following morning, we continued down the Rhine Valley before heading to Munich.  I did a lot of shopping around at the fresh open markets and climbed the towers within the Glockenspiel.  We then reunited in front of the Glockenspiel to see it chime and move at five in the evening.  Afterwords, we went to a beerhall for dinner, and that was a nice treat.  The next morning, we went to Austria and stopped on our way to our destination to do some whitewater rafting.  I had never been whitewater rafting, and I had a blast participating in it :^.^:.  We stayed in Hoftgarten, a small village, overnight before moving on to Venice.  Venice, due to its architecture, felt so timeless.  St. Mark's Square was absolutely lovely.  I also saw the Bridge of Sighs, how Murano glass is made, the Columns of Justice, and many many pigeons :lol.  The next morning, we left for Switzerland.  We stopped in Lucerne and shopped for a couple of hours before arriving in a small valley containing a couple of tiny villages and many farms.  We stayed there for two nights, and it was absolutely peaceful.  Several waterfalls ran down the mountains, our chalet was right next to a river, and the valley constantly rang of cowbells.  They sounded like windchimes, so it was not annoying B).  We then left for our final destination, Paris.  I was blown away at just how big the Eiffel Tower really is :wow.  Since it was the first Sunday of a month, the museums were free but the shops were closed for the most part.  I went to the Louvre and saw the Mona Lisa, replicas of Napoleon III's apartments, and so much more.  I then checked out a couple of Gothic-style churches before going to Notre Dame Cathedral.  Ever since I saw the Disney film I had wanted to see it in real life, so it felt surreal to be standing in front of it, even more so inside ot it.  I also saw the Opera Hall, Triumphe de Arc, Napoleon's headquarters, a French perfumery, many statues of significant historical figures, and even the very place where Princess Diana was killed.  I also went down the Champs Elysees, a famous shopping strip in Paris.  The next day, we went home.

I also had to try different foods in different countries, and all of it was very good.  I also tried their beers :lol.  Well, that is as briefly as I can describe my adventure.  Hope I kept it simple enough ;).  I really had a blast in Europe :yes!

This brings up some fond memories for me...
It was there that I met another land before time fan (the first one I ever got to know on the internet) in real live.  :)
She came from Australia and like you she was on a vacation through Europe. I hadn't ever been to that part of Germany before nor have I been there ever since.
