LBT Fanfiction / Darwin's Soldiers Drabbles
« on: September 12, 2009, 10:26:05 PM »
These are various Darwin's Soldiers drabbles I will be putting together for my creative writing class. I may decide to expand on some of them but I am not sure about that yet. Note that these are not canon unless I state that they are canon.

For those who have not heard of the  Darwin's Soldiers universe here is a summary (thanks to LettuceBacon&Tomato):

In the first RP, Pelvanida Base (a secret military research facility in the Nevadan desert) was attacked by terrorists.

One of the terrorists, Hans Donitz, switched to Pelvanida's side and helped defeat them, but not before they built an Einstein-Rosen Bridge, a device capable of transporting one through space and time.

In the second RP, James and a large team of ex-personnel from Pelvanida Base discovered an unethical and illegal underground project called Dragonstorm. They invaded the base with intentions to shut the project down.

----------------------------------------

The first one is below.

It is set during Darwin's Soldiers II. It expands on the alternate plan for how our heroes enter Pelvanida.

-----------------------------------------

Entrance

It was a hot night, typical of Nevadan summers. Below the clear sky, the moon and stars shone on an infinite sea of rocky desert slashed by a single highway. The highway below was as empty as the vast expanse of desert that surrounded it. There were no cars on this desolate stretch of highway. Except for two.

The first car, a large SUV, sped along the empty highway, its powerful high beams penetrating the darkness. The driver, an anthropomorphic Clydesdale horse, turned off the radio, which was softly playing Mars: The Bringer of War by Gustav Holst.

“You guys okay back there?” he asked.

“We’re trying to sleep.” A groggy female voice replied.

“Sorry.” The Clydesdale sighed and noticed a sign in the distance. It read “Route 140”.

A large pickup truck followed the SUV. The pickup truck’s high beams were nowhere as powerful as those of the SUV but they were adequate. The driver, an anthropomorphic bison, was blasting Kenny Loggins’s Danger Zone through his truck’s speaker system.

For several hours, the two vehicles drove through the empty desert. When the SUV finally stopped, it was near what seemed to be an abandoned gas station. The pickup truck soon followed and the driver disembarked.

The Clydesdale turned off the engine and opened all the doors. “Okay guys, time to rise and shine.”

The first person to exit the SUV was a skinny, somewhat scraggly haired man. He groaned a few times as he stretched.

“Zachary,” the man looked at his watch, “it’s 3:30, in the morning!”

“I know James, but this is the only way in without getting ourselves shot.” Zachary replied.

A young woman disembarked from the SUV followed by three other men, and an anthropomorphic hawk cyborg. They proceeded to stretch and walk around a bit before Zachary opened the trailer that his SUV was towing.

The trailer’s occupants, a man in a ninja outfit, an anthropomorphic chameleon, an anthropomorphic wolf who appeared to be cut in half and an anthropomorphic iguana disembarked. They two walked around to get their bearings and to revitalize their torpid limbs.

“An abandoned gas station?” the chameleon said, disgust evident in his voice.

“Quiet, Cale, there may be something here. Not is all as it seems.” The ninja replied.

“Yeah whatever, Kagetora.” Cale replied. He quickly struck a small electric arc between his thumb and forefinger to serve as a flashlight. He along with Kagetora began exploring the gas station.

Zachary headed for the back of the gas station and stopped by what seemed to be a bathroom except that the door was made of heavy steel not wood. He then quickly called everyone over to the “bathroom”.

“Well, this it, Pelvanida’s emergency exit.” Zachary replied.

“Let me guess, we enter through here.” Alfred replied.

James nodded. “Right you are.” He then tried the doorknob only to find out that it was merely a solid piece of steel. “And we’ll need your construction expertise.”

-----------------------

Aisha, Dr. Landon, Alfred, Dr. Zanasiu, Zachary, Werner, Hans, Kagetora, Cale, Neku, Slash and Hawkeye appear in this fic.

If you don't want a character used in these drabbles please tell me so as I need to use them in order to make these drabbles make sense.

Ask Me / Ask me about the Darwin's Soldiers 'Verse
« on: September 08, 2009, 06:51:06 PM »
Since half of my ask me thread were questions related to the Darwin's Soldiers universe, I thought to let that thread be dedicated to other questions and create this thread for the sole purpose of answering questions relating to my two works.

----------------------------------------

Summaries

Darwin's Soldiers

First RP

Terrorists invade Pelvanida, a subterranean government research facility in the deserts of Nevada. They are thwarted by the unlikely team of scientists, security guards, and the animal experiments.

Second RP
The heroes have stumbled upon a secret and illegal series of experiments and they invade Pelvanida to stop them. Along the way, they have to face the experiments, the guards and the scientists who will go to any length to protect the secrecy of their experiments.

Twilight Valley

The real Stone of Cold Fire lands in the Great Valley. Unfortunately, Claw Valley desires the stone and they will go to any lengths to get the stone and wipe out the Great Valley dinosaurs, igniting a brutal war.

------------------------------------

Both works are fairly well developed and somewhat popular but I am sure that people will have questions about them. I am here to answer those questions. Without further ado, ask away!  :wave  :D

The Fridge / Post count and access to AM

Malte's response to this thread:

I also think Serris raised a valid point. Not everyone capable of associating 20 words with other words delivers sufficient information that way to show that he or she is to be trusted with the somewhat more sensitive information of the AM section.

made me think a bit. How exactly can we determine who is "worthy" to see the AM section? Post count is not exactly reliable, especially if Party Room posts are counted. But I am worried about taking the other extreme and requiring individual approval for each member (I know of a forum that did that and all it did was polarize the forum to a disturbing extent. For instance, "elites" would taunt the lower members with little snippets from the restricted forum <usually jokes and funny anecdotes>).

LBT Fanfiction / What are your favorite dark LBT fics
« on: June 01, 2009, 05:19:57 PM »
Exactly as the title says, what LBT dark fics do you like?

A dark fic is defined by the TV Tropes Wiki as: "Deliberately writing a serious version of events related from a story which is originally quite lighthearted".

A dark fic does not necessarily have a PG-13 or an R rating

As for my list:

Out of the Shadows - possibly the darkest LBT fan fic ever written but it is very good with vivid descriptions and high octane thrills.

Time Gate LBT - an SF LBT fic that opens in post apoc Pittsburgh. Though the "LBT part" may be lighter, it focuses mostly on the post apoc world of 2019, thus earning place on this list. Being a furry, the anthropomorphic raptor mutants appealed to me and having an interest in SF also tilted this in my favor.

LBT Fanfiction / Smash Brothers + LBT fanfiction?
« on: May 03, 2009, 05:56:15 PM »
I just remembered the RP Smash Bros: Collision and I was suddenly struck by an idea: what if I could make a fan fiction out of it?

Granted, I may or may not have time to do it but it's just an idea I wanted to toss out there.

Role Play Discussion / Furry Science Fiction meets LBT
« on: March 30, 2009, 09:57:23 PM »
This idea was floating in my head for a while (since I read Time Gate X).

A scientist from the future warps back in time to capture some specimens for research but before he can finish the moonport he's based in (imagine JFK Airport with a lab in it!) is struck by a terrorist attack. He has to get out of the moonport, back to Earth and get to the bottom of a criminal conspiracy.

And yes as the subtitle hints, this is based off the rough plot outline for my second novel. See here for discussion on novel: R.A.P.T.O.R. Project Discussion

Erm, I should clarify that that the novel is original fiction.

Any suggestions?

Note if enough people consider joining, I may run this RP, but the chance is low as I am already dealing with 4 RPs.

Finished RP's / Darwin's Soldiers 2: Survival of the Fittest
« on: March 18, 2009, 05:46:53 PM »
Discussion is here. Please place all character profiles there.

Rule set:

You can play as the soldiers, experiments, scientists.

Scientists - have access to all areas of the base and thus access to the advanced weaponry but they are physically weak and have no combat related skills.

Soldiers - have access to small weaponry (small arms, grenades and the like) from the onset and have access to many combat related skills but have limited access to areas in the base.

Psi-Experiments - have psionic powers but have almost no access to areas in the base and are not too good with technology. They also have no combat related skills.

Cyber-Experiments - masters of technology and have a cybernetic enhancement. But have almost no access to various areas. No combat related skills.

Dragonstorm experiments - capable of using psionic powers and have a cybernetic enhancement. They are very limited in mental capabilities (capable of following orders and limited speech but that's about it). Dragonstorm experiments sport 1 psi and 1 cyber enhancement (up to 3 total in any combination). Note that they must have a weakness of some sort, no matter how small.

NOTE: Humans and Furries can be any faction.
NOTE: Allied scientists can start only with a pistol, improvised weapon or nothing.
NOTE: Any faction can use heavier weaponry (RPGs, grenades, etc.)
NOTE: Only soldiers can use armored vehicles and crew served weaponry.
NOTE: All Dragonstorm experiments are enemy aligned.
NOTE: Scientists, soldiers and cyber and psi experiments can be enemy aligned or allied.
NOTE: Allied scientists and soldiers can either start inside Pelvanida or outside (perhaps in a military base?)
NOTE: If you decide to use your old characters, they must start outside the base.

This is a mixed Human and anthro world.

You may have as many characters as you can control

------------------

Introduction:

A mere two weeks after the terrorist assault at Nevada's top secret Pelvanida Complex, reports of a mysterious project "Dragonstorm" have surfaced in the local media. The government, fearing a massive public relations disaster, has ordered the personnel who helped fight off the terrorist assault to be fired from Pelvanida and banned from ever working with the government and promised a full investigation into the matter.

After about three months, the investigation has revealed the guilty: Dragonstorm scientists. They were convicted and sentenced for multiple counts of assault, kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment. Each received life in prison without parole.

But only a month had passed before the Dragonstorm scientists were released from prison and back at Pelvanida. "Insufficient evidence" was cited as the cause of their release, but many, especially the former Pelvanida staff had their suspicions.

Character Discussion / Dil and Icthy

What do you think about these 2?

Yeah, they make an interesting pair. Dependent on each other but hate each other.

On the downside, their song "Who Needs You" was one of my least favorite songs.

LBT Multiplayer RPG Project Discussion / Flight System Discussion
« on: March 10, 2009, 11:55:47 PM »
Since the latest update now has flight I want to add this here as a brainstorming panel.

So far it seems like gliding is added.

--------

I like the idea of aerobatics but I'm not sure if it is in line with LBT (granted Great Day of the Flyers had some aerobatics). These could be used for showing off or for evasive maneuvers (kind of like how some aerobatic maneuvers seen in airshows are used in dogfights). Hell, it might be an interesting quest to have an "airshow/aerobatics competition".

Of course, aerobatic maneuvers would have to be learned from an instructor (Pterano?)

I'm not sure if an air racing competition is a good idea either. It would make for an interesting quest.

Should we add the idea of thermals and updrafts as a way to extend glides?

There should be some areas that are "no fly zones" (too windy, low oxygen, too cold) to add a challenge.

LBT Multiplayer RPG Project Discussion / How will death be dealt with?
« on: March 07, 2009, 02:41:59 AM »
A discussion in Info about the game mentioned what happens when your character's HP reaches 0 and dies.

Although in most RPGs death is due to combat; it is likely that death in this RPG is due to environmental hazards or stamina loss with some occasions caused by combat.

Now what should the penalties be?

I have compiled a list of what I could think of:

"Realistic death" - character dies and is deleted.

Upshots: Realistic, adds level of challange ,impossible to abuse for rapid traveling
Downsides: Extremely annoying and likely to cause anger.

----------------

Stat drop - character dies and reincarnates at a safe location but loses stats as a penalty

Upshots: less irritating than "realistic death", penalty reduces likelihood of abuse for rapid traveling
Downsides: annoying, could still be abused for rapid traveling

-----------------

Mercy warp - character dies and is reincarnated at a safe spot

Upshots: won't irritate players
Downsides: way too easy to abuse for rapid travel

Mercy warp (variant) - character dies and is teleported a short distance from where they died.

Upshots: won't irritate players, abuse potential is almost nonexistant (character has to travel to safe spot)
Downsides: define "short distance"

------------------

Personally, I think you should lose reputation and all inventory items for death and have a scene where you are chewed out for failing by the dinosaur who gave you the quest.

Also, said dinosaur will not give you any more quests until you successfully complete another quest of similar level from another dinosaur.

LBT Multiplayer RPG Project Discussion / Task and NPC dialogue
« on: February 24, 2009, 04:22:31 PM »
I volunteered to do dialogue. And I'm trying to fit it in my schedule.

But here's my first attempt (Mr. Threehorn). It's not finished yet:

Key:

(Start and end of conversation)

{Choices that player can make}

[NPC conversation]

<variable - defined at end, below --------->

Mr. Threehorn:

(Initiate conversation) Hmph. What do you want [player name]?

{Player: What can I help you with?}

[1. Nothing for now.]  (Conversation end)

[2. Yes, I do have some tasks for you. <task #1 –task #10>]

{Player: Nothing}  [Hmph. You’re wasting my time.] (conversation end)

(Initiate conversation – task completed): I have <task 1, completion - task 10, completion >

[Hmm. Thanks.] (Conversation end)

------

<Tasks:>

Task 1: Tria has lost some of her Shining Stones. Go find some more for her.
Completion: found the Shining Stones. Here they are. I hope Tria enjoys them.

Task: Tria and I are looking for some Sweet Bubbles. Find some for us.
Completion: gotten the Sweet Bubbles. Here you go.

Let me know if I made any mistakes.

Role Play Discussion / Darwin's Soldier's Sequel Discussion
« on: February 20, 2009, 07:30:55 PM »
Since the first Darwin's Soldiers is wrapping up nicely. I was wondering if I should make a sequel.

The secondary villains, the Dragonstorm scientists, have not been dealt with. I am considering making the sequel focused solely on them. I haven't quite decided what to do yet with them.

This will also be the place to discuss plot twists and events for the sequel RP once it gets off the ground.

LBT Fanfiction / Species name or "LBT Name" in LBT Fan Fics
« on: February 13, 2009, 09:21:19 PM »
Please read this before posting or voting: Dialogue does not count. This is about descriptions.

I've noticed that some LBT fics use the LBT names and some others use the actual species name.

I use the LBT names and some constructed ones because it's a little jarring to see a long Latin name pop up in the middle of a action sequence.

Also, the depictions I have of the dinosaurs in my fic fly in the face of real depictions and it seems a little odd to use a real name for something that has been proven false.

Also, some of the dinosaurs don't actually exist. Besides, most of the unnamed dinosaurs in my story die; so who cares if the "sickleclaw" was a Troodon or a Achillobator or if the Swimmer was a Maiasaur or a Lambeosaurus?

LBT Multiplayer RPG Project Discussion / Background Music?
« on: February 07, 2009, 02:55:30 PM »
What kind of music are you guys envisioning in this game?

Obviously, LBT songs are out of the question as they are copyrighted.

I think a good soundtrack for the game would be something "tribal/jungle" sounding (hand drums, possible "jungle ambient" sounds like leaves rustling, pan pipes, didgeridoo etc.)

An example of what it would sound like is this: Untamed Land (Command and Conquer)

LBT Fanfiction / Twilight Valley's 1 year anniversary
« on: January 30, 2009, 04:18:13 PM »
Well, today is the 1 year anniversary of my epic LBT war fic Land Before Time: Twilight Valley.  :birthday  :!

It was on this day, 1/30/08, at roughly 23:30 that the first chapter of Twilight Valley  was uploaded to fanfiction.net.

It currently stands at 15 chapters and 58,798 words and is still incomplete.

Today, I will try and see if I can upload a new chapter by that time!

Thank you to all the fans and readers of this magnum opus!
