Not quite... (well, it IS complicated). I'm actually not believing in supernatural stuff at all but here it's a plausible explanation. Littlefoot's mother appears kind of ghost-like. Could be a ghost, could be Littlefoot's mind going nuts too Could be some physical form of his mother that remained in Littlefoot's heart to guide him to the Great Valley until he's there and then disappear as well... many possibilities, what to believe?

Like I said, I think it's her spirit guiding her son but there are a few theories again how she might have done that (remnant of her soul in LF's heard like I theorised or maybe she's quickly returning from dino heaven when she heart LF's plead for help and emotional support???   )

Heh, recently during relaxation, I again thought about Littlefoot mother's mysterious supernatural nature... Her very-correct knowledge about path to the valley and the valley itself, things she has never seen wit her own eyes before, seeing by her heart somehow... Her spirit and voice appearances two (three in book as I remember) times...

Uh, it's still hard for me to put supernatural's appearances only on Littlefoot's imagination/hallucination...

Could she actually have supervision powers during life and ghost powers during afterlife?

Thw scene where Littlefoot follows the fog of his mom into the cave and the the fog becomes a longneck of clouds in the sky reminds me of the end of the original Dragonheart (starring Sean Connery) when Draco (the dragon becomes a spirit and makes a constellation of stars in the shape of a dragon.

Reminds me a bit of Rafiki's sarcasm in the lion king (after Simba saw Mufasa also as a cloud image): "What was that? The weather? Very peculiar, don't you think?"

Speaking of the Lion King, Mufasa appears in the clouds to remind Simba who he is, “remeber who you are,” and Littlefoot’s Mom does the same, Littlefoot has lost hope, “I tried Mother, I did everything you said, wait, don’t go mother!,”(paraphrase) and is lead to the Valley.
