Title: DarkHououmon's Artwork
Post by: DarkHououmon on August 18, 2019, 09:17:47 PM
So I finally got around to doing this. I forget if I had another thread where I posted various artwork, so I decided to make a new one. I'll be posting artwork in this thread instead of creating a new one for each image. I'll start off with these couple of images:

https://i.imgur.com/KrWR9sp.png

Some pretty old concept art for some of my alimon characters.

Very nice DH! Your art is always so smooth :) I especially like the smug green one on top. What happened to his paw?

I agree with Mumbling, these are pretty amazing. I like the different designs and patterns presented with each alimon. Great work! :DD

Thanks for the comments. I don't know why I took so long to get back to this. :P

I'm attempting Inktober this year. Here's the first prompt, Rings.

I don't think I commented on this yet on the Discord server, so better take care of it now, eh? I quite like this drawing, DH! The amount of detail on it shows very well that you must have spent a considerable amount of time on it, am I correct? I always appreciate people who take their time to make something this magnificent. And even if it appears to be made with pencils or such, it doesn't downgrade the overall quality in the least. I am most curious, what does this drawing represent? It is something I have never seen before, so naturally one is interested. Awesome drawing once again. Thank you for sharing it with us not only on the Discord server, but here as well.  :)

@DarkHououmon: I don't have much to add beyond what everyone else has already said, but I agree, great job. Looks like you may have missed Mumbling's question above. I too am curious, what happened to the green alimon's paw?

I can only second what Anagnos and StardustSoldier have said already. The drawing that you made with pencil was shaded in with such beauty and precision, so great job on that. If there’s one minor critique I may want to add to this, it’s the gems that surround the Rings character. The lines could probably be straighter and the opposite sides should mirror each other better as to avoid the overall crooked appearance it has when I’m looking at it. But overall, excellent work once again! :D

@StardustSoldier I'm thinking that it's an injury of some kind, but I haven't thought of what yet.

@Anagnos
@ImpracticalDino I forgot to mention that the theme I'm going for is mythological creatures. The bird in the first picture is a stymphalian bird, a mythological bird with a bronze beak and metallic feathers that it shot at its prey.

So no, ImpracticalDino, those aren't gems surrounding the bird. It's deadly sharp feathers.  :p But I should've tried to make that more clear, sorry about that.

Now onto the second prompt, Mindless: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/369484390440370176/629132197047304202/IMG_20191002_214741335.jpg

This next one definitely is a bit more discernible compared to the preceding drawing and once more I must confess that your level of drawing is very neat and distinguishable from the others works. I can clearly see why so many people like them as they present nothing less than the finest examples an artist can provide. And even if this one is done with pencils as well, it still doesn't demote the picture's prowess in any way I can see. I quite like the facial expression in this one, as it gives a very clear message that the creature, or rather the assumed assailant in this point is about to commit something heinous judging by their specific expression. I certainly wouldn't want to meet this creature alone at night - that's a sure way for disaster to occur. Nevertheless, a fine drawing from you, DH! I'll be sure to be just as excited for future works from you! :)

Once again, this was another fantastic art piece that you created, and I always enjoy when people can make drawings out of pencil and still make it on par with digital creations or even better. I have no critiques to give for this specific drawing, so awesome job DarkHououmon!

Well, I'd say you have outdone yourself with this one, DH. These Inktober drawings sure are very intriguing to see as I had no prior knowledge about the whole thing until it was brought up on the Discord server. I'm sure in my decision when I say that this drawing is pretty much on the same level as the other two, albeit here the quality is better defined, in my opinion. I have no critique to offer here and it would be kind of pointless for me to say the same things all over again, as that's the best way I can describe this drawing in words. Will be looking forward for more. ;)

I do like the reversal of viewer's expectations with this drawing. While a fisherman would normally use bait to draw in larger fish, it appears a bigger fry considers him the bait this time.

While this one is somewhat mediocre this time and since I have no clue what this might be, I'm going to refrain from making long statements about it to save time and say that it is quite a lovely picture overall. Even though I feel like it could have been a bit better with some color added into it, but I understand if that's the general idea.

Title: Re: DarkHououmon's Artwork

The bait drawing is wonderful! I do agree with OwlsCantRead about the dramatic and situational irony in the drawing. I felt like the very dark shading of pencil for this picture really emphasizes how ignorant the man is, relaxing on the boat with no care in the world. Nice details on the predator by the way. :)

As for the freeze prompt, while I don’t necessarily agree with Anagnos’ opinion of mediocrity, I do admit that the drawing you have shown is different from the others so far. It is much more flat and static than the others, as well as less pencil shading, although the latter is not really a critique. Objectively, it still a wonderful creation of art, but when compared to your other drawings, I can understand why Anagnos may feel that way.

I just realized that there might have been confusion regarding what medium I'm using. To clear it up, I'm using pencil only for sketching, then using a thin permanent marker to make the outline, after which the pencil is completely erased. The coloring is done using watercolor markers. The challenge is called Inktober for a reason: the final product must be done in some form of ink. Pencil is okay only for the initial creation of the image. I hope that clears things up.

@Anagnos  Sorry it took me a while to write this. Anyway, the reason I was upset was because your comment of "this picture is mediocre compared to the others" came off as rude to me as there was no attempt I recall of you explaining why you felt that way nor any attempts at offering suggestions for said image, outside of using color. I do enjoy reading your feedback; I just ask that if you find one of my pictures lacking, please explain to me, if you can, what you think needs improving on (such as posture, changes in design, etc).

I like how expressive the Husky image is. The gray-scale sketch and expressive angles (its claws retracting inwards at an oblique angle) really lends itself to the projection of a feral wolf out for blood.
Title: Re: DarkHououmon's Artwork

@DarkHououmon  I realize I might have come across as rude in my comment, so I apologize for that. I unequivocally probably went too far with that without considering how you might take it. I will definitely make sure that my comments will not come off as accusative in the future. Once again, sorry for this inconvenience I may have caused unintentionally.

I must agree with Owls on the next set of pictures in pretty much everything. I would add that the grayscale actually makes them look a bit more qualified, which is noticeably preferable than the other ones, I’d say. Everything about these two disseminate existent art in a good way, the most notable being the expressions on these figures, which I very much like for adding that extra layer of emotion into them as a whole. The ferocious countenance of the wolf premeditates care in design and preparedness for a viable clash, while the sullen expression in the other one indicates poignant crisis has taken place not too long ago. Very well detailed, Darkhououmon!

I really like the facial expression in this one which presents quite a humorous feature in the pattern of the character. Some might consider it to be a look of pure terror or in some cases even transparent bewilderment over something that they have seen. Furthermore, the apparent ominous hand attaching itself to the hapless bird reveals something sinister is about to happen – which is only reinforced by the look of the bird. Then again, the position of the arm is quite an extraordinary one, as it almost looks like the strange figure is not about to mishandle the poor bird, but rather help it. There are certainly many ways one can take this picture, but these are the sentiments I came up with when I observed this drawing. It certainly is very explicit in quality, but the catch behind it is not so clear initially. Very well done once more, Darkhououmon! I’ll eagerly await for your future drawings!

I really like the contrast that is present here between the bird and the darkly shaded hand, proving that opposites do attract in my book. The odd smoke that is coming from the bird's eyes...I do wonder if something bad is about to happen, possibly towards the person who is handling the bird at the moment. I do believe that looking towards the audience like that is a possible foreshadowing of such event. There are some minor issues that I would like to point out in the drawing that I think can be improved. The shape of the bird's head could be more uniform and less irregular. Also, the long pointy feathers sticking out in the back, particularly the first and last one, was drawn a bit weirdly. Also, the end of the pointer finger looked odd as well, albeit it looks fine if you look at it from a different perspective. Keep up the good work, DarkHououmon! :D

I honestly smiled upon first glance of this drawing, DarkHououmon. Not only because I thought this was excellent, but also because of the context of the picture. Here, it shows the intimidating and ferocious leopard, while at the same time a smaller creature is clinging towards him like some sort of protector and guardian. I think that is just so heartwarming. Obviously, something off screen is making the leopard acting so defensive and aggressive. Although, the more I look at it, it could probably be interpreted in other ways. While the thing the rodent is holding is a little too vague to know if its a paw or an item, it doesn't change the overall meaning of the picture much for me. Overall, I loved this particular drawing. Great job on the details! :smile

I had a darker interpretation of the drawing. To me it seemed like the long-necked leopard was about to devour the poor little rodent. Or maybe he just wants a piece of whatever the rodent is eating. Regardless, very nicely done. It's impressive how much detail you can get using only grayscale.

The rodent looks a bit too calm and happy though, don't you think? Unless he was completely oblivious of the impending doom he is about to face a second later or so.

To further elaborate on my perspective, it didn't seem like the leopard had his preying eyes on the rodent, but rather it was acting aggressive towards something in front of it and off screen. I do have to admit though, the rodent is a little too close for comfort near the leopard's mouth. :o

It's funny, because I would usually always jump on the darker and pessimistic side of things, but yet any thought of that was completely absent with the picture I viewed this time. :lol

Now this is easily one of the most curious drawings from you lately, and the emotions it awakened in me were quite engrossing as to what this picture could possibly mean. Yes, I believe that every piece of art tries to convey some form of a message to the people to ponder, and while it may not always be unanimous, I like to hear what other people think of the specific art and what kind of emotions it brought up. Now, this kind of a feeling is a bit strange as while I’m not a big fan of art, I still enjoy watching some every now and then. I have to once more reiterate by how amazing the overall quality of the picture is. It really makes me feel like I’m right there, if you know what I’m trying to say here. Undoubtedly, the rodent is about to have some unexpected and unwelcome company sooner or later from the predator it hasn’t yet noticed. I hate to think what the outcome in this scenario would be, but regarding the circumstances, things are not looking very good for the rodent at all. I must also once more express how glad I am to see you continue to keep up with your high-level of detail in your drawings. Keep those drawings coming, it is always a great pleasure to see them. For the record, your inspiration for this one was something else.

''Look, mom! No hind legs!''

I realized that I absolutely had to include that sentence as this one was worth a good laugh, in a good way, mind you. I couldn’t stop the small grin from forming on my face when I saw the priceless pose of this creature – whatever it is, because I have no idea. I would gladly appreciate if you could offer some of your input on as to what it could be. Or do you have an inkling what it is and just went with your gut, as they say? I would be most pleased to receive an answer from you to this question, as not knowing has been bugging me almost the entire day. The facial expression is quite frightening, in my opinion as the cold stare of this thing is utmost unnerving – a clear testament of your ability to create something so powerful that it actually affects the person observing it in this way. I have no constructive criticism to offer this time, as I simply couldn’t find anything to point out about. Perhaps someone else will have better luck? Let’s hope so, as there is always room for improvement. :)

You never cease to surprise me DarkHououmon, although I should expect these types of drawings coming from you though. Poor camel, what a cruel twist of irony to be walking in a frozen tundra during a blizzard instead of cruising along in a desert. I really love the symbolism you represented as well, showing the camel’s back as a snowy mountaintop. It further emphasizes the clear struggle the camel is going through, as it can quite literally be compared to human hikers that trek up the mountains. It also seems that there’s a river that to cross as well, adding to the adversity that already plagues the camel. He’s also old and tired from the way you depicted him, possibly even experienced at this? But either way, a very dire situation to be in. Also, there’s something I would like to point out that’s probably not intended to be part of the picture, but a bit humorous in a way. There’s two snow flakes to the right of the camel with a small wind line under it, which makes it look kind of like a happy face, overall adding a mockery tone to the obvious peril that the latter is already facing. Just look at it side by side! But overall, this is probably one of my favorites from you so far, and I have no critiques to offer for this drawing. Great job! :)

It’s almost as if this camel has experienced things similar or worse than this in his life.

DarkHououmon, does this camel have some kind of dark backstory or history? Or did you just randomly decided to draw a camel walking in a snowstorm for this specific prompt?

@ImpracticalDino It's a cryptid/mythological creature. Specifically, a hugag. I didn't get all the details right and wasn't able to fix it in time, but oh well. Here's the description of the hugag:

"The Hugag is a large horse-like creature found in Minnesota. The Hugag is described as a large horse-like creature with a very large upper lip which prevents it from grazing, floppy ears, jointless legs, a long tail, and shaggy fur coat covering it’s body except its head which is hairless. It loves to eat tree bark and at night since it can’t lay down due to it’s jointless legs it leans up against trees to fall asleep. People believe that the Hugag could be a surviving Paraceratherium which is a species of primitive horse that went extinct during the ice age."

If anyone's interested, I could start labeling what mythical creatures these are supposed to be.

@DarkHououmon: It will be much obliged, thank you. Specifying what creature you drew would prevent further confusion. :)

Alright, now onto the prompts!
The first one is a pretty interesting combo I’ve got to admit, as it looks like a hybrid of a dragon, a horse, and...an anglerfish? Nice job combining the elements, with the roughness of the scales, the beauty of its mane, and the intimidating look in its eyes, facial expression, and accurate anglerfish teeth. And as always, the shading is on point. Once again, I have no complaints with this piece, and I’m happy to see that you’re more recent drawings are lacking the flaws that were present in some of your previous works. Great job! :DD

I’m not even going to try and guess what these mythical creatures are, but wow. It’s pretty obvious to see who the predator and prey is in this situation. I like the scales and spikes on the creature above, and good job expressing the pain that the other creature is in with the salivating of the mouth and the panicked expression. I have to ask, what are those two long obsidian-like extensions sticking out of the prey’s body? Are those supposed to be attached to his body? This is a pretty dark and crazy interpretation, but possibly the creature above him probably created two wounds already where the dark life essence is slowly leaving his body. Wow, that would be insane. But enough speculation, and onto one small piece of criticism. The reptile like creature doesn’t really show any sort of emotion or facial expression, just flat and staring into us. Perhaps something more could’ve been done with it, such as one that shows maliciousness. With all that said though, I had a lot of fun guessing with this prompt DarkHououmon. :)

Of the previous several, "Overgrown" and "Legend" are my favourites. Both of them got a good chuckle out of me.

I’m wondering, were all of these drawings for Inktober drawn individually for each day in October, or were they all made beforehand? It would be very impressive if it was the latter, although one would need a bit of free time for that. But either way, all of your drawings were excellent DarkHououmon. Like StardustSoldier, I look forward to what you have to offer next year. :D

@ImpracticalDino Most of them were done the day of the prompt. There were a few times where I missed a day, so I drew 2 prompts in 1 day. I think there was one time that I drew 3 prompts in 1 day.

Hey, Hououmon!

Good ones!
Especially love second one. Less colors, dark atmosphere. I like such atmosphere. ^^

I remember seeing these on Discord. Glad your posting them on the forum! I agree with Sneak that I think I like the 2nd one the best. Very intense! Really contrasted with how happy the Alimons are in the final one  :chompysmile

Very nice. I like the grin in this drawing. At one point I knew some of the differences between the Alimon, but not so sure anymore haha. I think this one was the genderless one or something?

Their name is Flicker.

Yes. They're intersex, so neither male nor female, and goes by they/them pronouns.

Great expression on this one, nice work :Mo

It was hard to pull off but fun to do. :P
