Member Recommendations / For LBT Soundtrack Lovers
« on: August 11, 2010, 09:48:32 PM »
For those who really liked the LBT soundtrack (I would say that's most of us here) I have a recommendation for you if you seek some new tunes for your stale ipod collection.

James Horner, LBT's composer was a busy man in 1987-1988 and not only did he give us LBT's wonderful orchestral score, there was another score he worked on concurrently, and some have called it the sister score to LBT based on the themes, motifs, melodies, and such.  It is Horner's score to the movie, Willow.

The cd is far cheaper and readily available for those who seek another solid, classy experience in film music.  The album is even broken into "concert pieces" like LBT with long sweeping passages and themes.  The "If We Hold on Together" theme that is reminiscent and repeated often in LBT is similar to Willow's theme (and even Elora Danan's theme) in that you hear bits and pieces of this theme interwoven everywhere in the score.

Definitely worth trying LBT fans.  :exactly  :exactly

If you look in the fridge, you'll see a section for "Member Recommendations".  This will be for things like if you tried a new product that you think others should give a try, this is where you should post your review--what you like, dislike, etc.

Enjoy. :wave

http://sites.google.com/site/mistmantlechronicles/  (not finished but I'm updating throughout the day)

http://z7.invisionfree.com/Mistmantle/index.php?act=idx

I felt about doing these things once I finished up the final book in the chronicles and discovered there is no web community at all for the series.  None!  It certainly disappointed me so I had some spare time today to get some things started online for the book series Mistmantle Chronicles.

As always, I'm looking for help on the site and the forums.  Please join and help me out if you'd like.  I'm willing to give you guys first dibs on staff as well because I know a lot of members here and that's always a good thing.

Just think....this is how the GOF started out waaaaaay back when.  :yes   :exactly   I've no clue if all this will work out, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Silver Screen / Should Avatar be considered an animated film?
« on: July 15, 2010, 10:48:50 AM »
Saw this link on another board and it got me thinking:

http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/article/shoul...-animated-oscar

My response:

Now that is a very peculiar question.  I would say Alvin and the Chipmunks had less total computer animation than Avatar, but Avatar is no Up or Ratatouille or other CGI films that are clearly all CGI.  If you go back to the blending of animation and live action found in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, you'll see that WFRR was not nominated as an animated film, yet a lot of animated footage clearly exists.  If following how WFRR was classified twenty years ago, Avatar is not worthy of an animated film oscar, but then again, Alvin shouldn't be there either.  I think the award was meant for all-animated films, meaning 100% done by animation, not some psycho-blend of two mediums.

Sound Off! / I may never listen on speakers again.
« on: April 18, 2010, 05:14:09 PM »
That's a WOW comment from me.  Yeah, I said it...I may never listen on speakers again.

So why am I saying this?  Because I found this: http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_dsp_dolbyhp

Of course, what made it better was that I already use foobar2000 and because I had PowerDVD installed on my computer, I had the dll file that was needed to make it work. :D  Basically what the plugin does for headphone users is make the sound seem as if its in 5.1 surrounding you and not "in your head".  I've tested a lot of soundtracks/orchestra stuff in the "Live" setting and it sounds really nice (like I'm in a concert hall)!!!  Even monophonic material sounds like its presented over a wide-speaker system rather than some tiny chamber in the middle of your head.  This is definitely one of the better headphone plugins I've ever tried or listened to.

If your system has the Dolby dll file, its something you should try if you find yourself constantly using headphones.

I'm glad I gave it a try!  :exactly

No that's not how many messages are in my inbox!  :p  :lol

I'm speaking of here, us, the GOF...in another 1,000 posts/messages, we'll be at a quarter of a million messages.  I didn't even pay much attention until I looked and I saw what was there.  What's more amazing is we're still very much that small, humble LBT community started five and half years ago yet through the dedication and contributions of so many, we are the premier LBT discussion forum!  :DD  :DD

Thank you ALL for making the GOF what it is today and what it will be for thousands of messages to come!  :yes  :yes

Gamers Zone / I finally got to play brawl!
« on: January 01, 2010, 03:58:46 PM »
I finally got some time to take Super Smash Bros Brawl for a joyride.  I don't remember the game being so difficult. :lol  My old mains from Melee - Pikachu and Peach were changed quite a bit and I had a hard time with Pikas jumps (kept accidentally jumping off the stage :p ).  I cheated a bit to get Lucario and I like him better than other characters I've tried.  Problem being my hands have gone numb after playing with a wii remote so I can't do it much.  Its only a rental so the game goes back at the end of the weekend, but I think it was worth the time I got to play. :)  Graphics are cool...I like the old Melee stages...especially Zelda's temple stage which is huge!

If I was younger and had less responsibilities to manage, I would have really enjoyed this game much much more. :)

The Fridge / The good things of 2009
« on: December 31, 2009, 09:43:44 AM »
Tell us the good things that happened to you in 2009 (in a sea of bad things).

Mine are in no particular order:

- keeping my job and working for another year despite a really bad year

- learning I didn't have carpal tunnel in my wrist and could still bowl once my muscles healed

- having one of my better bowling years as of late (two 700 series)

- my trip to Walt Disney World :D :D

- my aunt got married in September...it took a long 40+ years to find the right person ;)

Sound Off! / How well do you know your music?
« on: November 29, 2009, 09:48:38 PM »
Taken from jwfan.com forums:

How many tracks of my own collection would I actually recognise in a random playlist taken from anything I have? And then I thought: Why not turn it into another guessing game for the board?

The rules:

1) You must have your entire collection (or at least most of it) on your computer/music player.
2) You must use a player which allows you to create a random playlist from everything in your collection.
3) You must try to guess, as close as possible, every track that plays, without looking at the playlist. It doesn't matter *when* you figure it out, just do it before you look at the playlist or it doesn't count. Try to guess composer/artist/score/work/title/scene/song name/whatever.
4) If you, like me, have stuff in your collection which you have never listened to, or gotten from a friend and only played once or twice without ever actually thinking of it as "owning it", and you don't recognise it, you may discard that track and pick another random track instead.
5) Something recognised more or less in full is worth three points. Just recognising the composer & work without the specific part of the work, or song without album, is worth two points. Recognising just the composer/artist: One point.

When done, post your result here.

Side note-this probably would work with any song.  Know the performer, the title, and the album.  See what you can do. :)
