History Section / Who would win, Bismarck or Yamato?
« on: November 06, 2012, 06:23:30 PM »
I'd probably place my money on the Yamato, for the same reasons that Pterano has mentioned. The Yamato simply has better range and guns.

Assuming that the two battleships are unescorted, you could also try submarines. Both of the two battleships had anti-torpedo bulges, and both carried planes capable of anti-submarine operations. Still, a successful submarine attack can easily disable even a battleship.

If there's a full on high energy metal/hard rock piece in the next season, I might just die from sheer awesome.

... What can I say, I'm a bit of a metalhead.
AWESOME! Love that band! I like how they base their songs on actual historic events, but it's 20% cooler with ponies. My favorite is Ghost Division; hope they make a PMV of that soon.

^ You can also check out some of the books by Peter Tsouras. He wrote Disaster at D-Day and Third Reich Victorious. I have never read the later, but the former was great, although a little overwhelming at times.

In the book, as well as in actuality, the invasion was off to a bad start. Allied level bombers completely miss their target, and the airborne assaults become scattered and disorganized. However, the Allies do manage to land.

However, in the fictional book, the German command reacted much more quickly, and a division of Panzer IVs overrun the Americas at Omaha Beach. The British and the Canadians are soon overwhelmed and driven back into the ocean.

The book stops short of proclaiming a German victory in WWII, and it's easy to see why. The Soviets were advancing on the Eastern Front, and the Western Allies were still advancing, albeit slowly, through Italy. This is not to say that Germany would still lost, but it presents too many possibilities for me or Tsouras to draw a definite conclusion.

The characters and dialogue are very realistic, and the descriptions are vivid and sometimes very graphic. The pages include various maps and pictures, but still, sometimes, the information is overwhelming. I eventually lost track of the divisions and locations of the troops. Still, it was a very good read.

Well there is an area in near Quebec and Alabama called the Great (Appalachian) Valley. It spans about 1200 feet. I've never been there myself but i read about it on the web. Just a food for thought ;)

Eeyup; been living there for eight years...

Well, I was just doing my AP US History notes when I read something about this place. Here's the excerpt:

Quote
Echo Park is a spectacular valley in the Dinosaur National Monument, on the border between Utah and Colorado, near the southern border of Wyoming. IN the early 1950s, the Bureau of Reclamation--which had been created early in the century to encourage irrigation, develop electric power, and increase water supplies--proposed building a dam across the Green River, which runs through Echo Valley, so as to create a lake for recreation and a source of hydroelectric power. The American environmental movement had been relatively quiet quiet since its searing defeat early in the century in its effort to stop a similar dam in the Hetch Hetchy Valley at Yosemite National Park. But the Echo Park proposal helped rouse it from its slumber.

In 1950, Bernard DeVoto--a well-known writer and a great champion of the American West--published an essay in The Saturday Evening Post entitled "Shall We Let Them Ruin Our National Parks?" It had a sensational impact, arousing opposition to the Echo Valley dam from many areas of the country, The Sierra Club, relatively obscure in the previous decades, was roused into action... By the mid-1950s, a large coalition of environmentalists, naturalists, and wilderness vacationers had been mobilized in opposition to the dam, and in 1956 Congress--bowing to the public pressure--blocked the project and preserved Echo Park in its natural state.

Pretty cool, huh! The Green River is the river you see running through the center of the first photo. Here's a more up-close photo.

Nothing short of magnificent, no? This would have made the Western barriers of the Great Valley.

And no, I don't believe that the Great Valley actually exists or is actually based on this place. It's just something interesting for fanfic writers, readers, and naturalists. It's just something interesting I've found--nothing more.

(Btw, I just visited the Smithsonian Aviation Institute with my marching band. It was pretty awesome. My friend and I were basically serving as tour guides for everyone. There are a few particular planes that I'm planning on using in my fanfic, and I was absolutely delighted to see them up close. They even have a ME-163 Komet! Can you believe it? Too bad they didn't have any IL-2s or Mosquitoes (or a P-38 with a 20mm cannon for that matter...). Those were my favorites.)

Thanks for the info.

And well, the story is set during a war, but I wouldn't call it a war story. It should be ready soon. It's actually a parody of a short story by an English author. I guess the story is more about society than war.

Yep, a full profile of several MLP characters as generals from C&C Generals.

Yeah, I really liked Fluttershy's "Rage Barrage" and Octavia's "Symphony of Pain". That Octavia photo used to be my avatar.

On  a related note...

Alright, without giving away any details of my story, here's the cover of my story. Why, yes, I did make it myself. Yes, it was my first time using Photoshop. I've actually got some more images, but I've chosen this one for the cover:

Also, can anyone tell me what that Ponygeist means? I saw that a few days back, but I couldn't figure out what it was referring to.

^ I've seen a lot of Fluttershy-Macintosh pairings. It seems really popular too.

Dawwww

It's difficult to choose, but I'd have to say that my favorite character would also have to be Applejack. I see a lot of myself reflected in her--diligent work, can-do spirit, and a tendency to bite off more than we can chew.

I'm still working on that one fanfic. It has encouraged me to use new tools like Photoshop. It has been difficult, but I'm getting there.

I can handle sad stuff can I have the link to that story Serris?
Sure.

Here it is: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/06/stor...ml?m=0#comments

Trust me, I thought I could handle sad stuff but this was too much.
Dang! That was depressing; it really was. But I kinda like the ending. I love how the fanfic is so happy, innocent, and bright one moment and so dystopian, grim, and sad the next. Bravo to the writer! Bravo!

I'm actually also working on a fanfic. It's actually a parody--more or less. I'm even planning on submitting it to Equestria Daily. I even have the artwork ready. I'm not sure if it'll get accepted, but I'm crossing my fingers. I'll keep the content a surprise--for now.

But I really feel depressed now. I really do. I'll think that I'll go play some jazz on my

<--- awesome saxophone

to cheer me up.

Dima Gallop quickly grasped the solemnity of the situation. Imitating Midnight Sun, he took cover behind a tree and laid down. His mind raced as he tried to come up with a defense strategy. There was none. He hardly knew how to run in his new form, let alone fight. He began to grow uneasy and nervous.

Although they were usually an optimists, Dima Gallop and Daisy Mellow both knew the graveness of their position. Neither of them could fly, and neither of them were used to running in their new forms. Neither knew how to put up a fight. A cockatrice would turn them into stone before they have a chance to escape, and a manticore would simply tear them to pieces.

Dima tried to brush the thoughts from his head. As long as he remained quiet, he would not be found. He gestured to Daisy to get down and softly whispered "shh..." Daisy understood and laid down behind a bush. Their colors contrasted with the color of the grass, but the forest was dark. As long as they made no noise, they still stood a chance.

"Great... Just great." Dima said sardonically, "Out of all the places where we could be,  we just had to be in the Everfree forest. This is a pretty dangerous place. That cockatrice is still out there, just waiting to turn us into stone, and we don't know where..."

Daisy stopped Dima's prattling with a whack on his side. Dima immediately stopped talking and looked slightly embarassed. Diasy gave him an annoyed look.

"Do you two hear something?" Daisy asked, "I think somepony is galloping this way. That locator pulse really worked."
