Most Unnecessary Character Deaths

What characters from movies/books/games/etc. do you feel died an unneeded death?

The only one I can think of right now is Konan from Naruto. Honestly, what was the point of killing her? She could have been a very useful ally in the Fourth Ninja World War but for some reason the creator decided to kill her off for no particular reason. Heck, I'm STILL trying to come up with a plausible explanation as to why she was killed.

The first character that comes to mind when reading this topic is the Combustion Man from Avatar: The Last Airbender. I would think with a series like Avatar, they would give a solid backstory with that character...but they didn't, they had him "blow up".

If he was a hired assasin that was going to try to get Aang and whatnot, at least they should show a reason why he agreed to Zuko getting him, was it money, power, the joy of killing, etc?

And this comment Zuko made, "I've heard about you, they say you are good at what you do, even better at keeping secrets. See, there's the Avatar, I want you to find him. And to end him."

Or at least he said something like that. What made Zuko say he was good at keeping secrets? What made the Combustion Man good at what he did?

^ I think I can help you out there Rat lady. Yes, I am an Avatar: the Last Airbender freak. I have to nitpick on this.

Zuko actually says: "I've heard about you, I hear you're good at what you do. And even better at keeping secrets. The Avatar's alive. I want you to find him. And end him." Then... while we zoom in on Cumbustion's man's third eye...CUE THE SCARY FIRE NATION THEME MUSIC!

The reason he's good at keeping secrets is because he doesn't talk. He doesn't say a single word all the times we've seen him. So he really can't tell anyone Aang's alive because he simply can't.

As to why Combustion man is good at what he did is because legends (or rumors) say that he was a fire nation soldier, wounded severly in battle. So to heal him, docters experimented on him. Thus giving him the ability to shoot fire from his mind. Why he agreed to Zuko's offer, I'm not really sure. It's never explained.

Now, for me. Cinderpelt's death in the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. What was the point of killing her? She was young, fit, and healty. Why did she have to kill Cinderpelt off? It makes no sense. She was attacked by a badger and sacrificed her life to save Sorreltail (a random cat) when she was pregnent with kits and Leafpool (her apprentice) was too late to save her so she died. But, I guess there was a good reason, coz she got run over by a car and she shattered her leg and couldn't protect her home. So their ancestors gave her spirit to a young kit so the kit could fufill her dream that was never realized. So there's a reason. But I don't think it's a very good reason.

Bold, Badger, Kestrel (possibly died from old age, not confirmed), Scarface, Mole and Dreamer from the Animals of Farthing Wood. They are the only characters in the series that I wish lived.

Badger's

Bold's and Scarface's
Scarface's deaths are very hard to watch [for me and many others on an AOFW forum anyway].

Mole's death is only mentioned, never seen, Dreamer's death isn't seen, just her body laying motionless and Kestrel is belived to have died from old age like in the books as she disappears after season 2.

Data from Star Trek. One might question whether this was really a death seeing that he was a machine, but on the other hand his being a machine added to his death being so unnecessary. Being not dependent on breathable air he could have very simply escaped the situation in which he died / was destroyed.

I don't think it's confirmed that Combustion Man really died or not. In the episode with the reenactment play, Sokka says "I think Combustion Man died." Now if they were so certain he did, Sokka would have said "Combustion Man died.", but instead he says "I think Combustion Man died." For all I know, Combustion Man may have very well survived and had to go into some intensive care place to treat his wounds.

Then again he might have died and it just wasn't confirmed 100% in the show. Jet had actually died in the episode where he tried to fight Long Feng (sp?) but it wasn't confirmed in the show. It was left unresolved. Even in the play episode, they still didn't know if Jet was alive or dead. It was the show's producers, I believe, that confirmed Jet died from his injuries.

Okay...I never knew about the scientist part, they never said it in the series, so the audience wouldn't know unless the digged into DEEP research about it just as you have.

Yeah, I knew about the Jet thing, but for the Combustion Man the supposed "death" was spontaneous, it just came in with no explanation was just there to kill off a character that could have more development.

^ True, Combustion man's story might have been nice and refreshing, and he might not've died, but there's really no telling unless they make a fourth season. Which probably isn't going to happen

^There probably won't be a fourth season of Avatar: The Last Airbender [as much as I want one]. The movie that was released in 2009 is supposed to be the finale of the series, which is why it was called 'Avatar: Sozin's Comet: The Final Conflict' (I think). Hence it having final in the name. But there was only three books (Water; Earth; Fire).

There wasn't Book 4: Air.

There is a new Avatar series coming out. Legend of Korra I believe. Not sure when it's coming out. It takes place after the first series and stars the new avatar, a fiesty girl named Korra. Unlike Aang at the start of the first Avatar series, Korra has already mastered firebending, waterbending, and earthbending. In the new series, she has to find Tenzin, an airbending master, to learn air bending, the only one left she needs to master. The main conflict of this new series, from what I understand, is an anti-bending campaign.

The legend of Korra is coming out in if I can rememeber sometime in November or September of this year. Tenzin is Aang and Katara's son, and it's set to run for I think 12 or 14 episodes or something. Didn't know about the anti-bending conflict. even with that stalking I did. Must've missed it.

Now, I read that the creators confirmed all the main characters of the original series are dead, it's set 70 years later.

Actually its 75 years, the son of Katara and Aang appears, but everbody from The Last Airbender is dead. I looked on Avatar wiki and wikipedia, it was the same at both, but Avatar wiki had a bit more.

That must've happened in the manga I'm assuming? Because as far as I know, she has not died in the tv series.
