Title: Artwork by MURMUR
Post by: MurMur on June 28, 2013, 01:21:07 PM
This is a place for my LBT fanart and other dinosaur-related artwork.
(Let it be my 500th post here. Opening this thread is a good way to celebrate my newly acquired Petrie level. Petrie is the reason why I love LBT.)

1. Ducky123 as an orange hadrosaur.

I've created a dinosaur persona ("dinosona") for Ducky123. This is how he would look like if he was an LBT dinosaur.
This is my second LBT-related picture, the first one was "Ozzy and a pile of Eggs".

Awww, thank you so much, MurMur :) and congratulations for your 500th post :yes

You may want to put your 'Ozzy and a pile of eggs' into this thread, too?

Thanks. :) Here is "Ozzy and a pile of Eggs" (http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss2/Pangaean/Miscellaneous/MurMur%20Pictures/k2u.png).
He is not colored, but there's no real need to do coloring. That was just a funny picture for the "Caption This" section.

I use MS Paint to create my pictures.

Wow! those are done in paint? Flippin' whaaaat? :o

Both are very well done, you have a really unique, almost cartoony, but it's a serious type of cartoony, style :)
Esp. love Oz and his eggs. At last!!! XDD

Thanks. Yes, they are done in Paint. What's wrong with that? :)

Absolutely nothing wrong!
I'm just surprised bc I can't do in Paint what I can do in GIMP. What version of Paint do you have?

I'm not sure. The one in Windows 7.

MS Paint in Windows 7 is more advanced than previous Paint. There's more options available, though still no layers.

I used old Windows 98 Paint for years before switching to this one. No need to use anything else.
What do you think of these pictures?

Paint is really impressive! You need a real steady mouse to work with that and make it look good like that. Keep it up!

The reason I asked is because most people who draw will either use photoshop or GIMP, which are very detailed programs that work with layers (so that you can hide one element or work on one etc.), you're doing everything on one layer, that's really good!
Title: Artwork by MURMUR
Post by: MurMur on June 28, 2013, 05:23:21 PM
Never heard of layers. :) I've never seen any drawing programs other than Paint. That's because I rarely draw anything.

A picture I made yesterday.

2. Ozzy's mean sister.

This is a picture of an unnamed female egg-stealer. She looks like Ozzy's evil sister or something, so I created an appropriate backstory for her. The story is that she was mean to Ozzy and denied him food. So he had to run away from her, taking Strut with him. And now she wants to get revenge on Ozzy for kidnapping her beloved brother Strut. :) She loves Strut, because he doesn't try to steal her food, while Ozzy does.
The pinkish color looks rather stereotypical, but I think it fits her very well. I wanted to make her blue, but the end result was not very good.

These are really cute, MurMur! I love your style of drawing. :yes

It's also very impressive that you do your drawings in Paint. I struggle a lot with it myself, and prefer to use GIMP with layers and stuff like that, but you have done really good stuff with it! Looking forward to seeing more! :DD

Thanks. I feel that layers are not necessary to make a good picture. No one had access to them in ancient times. :)

3. A storm is coming...

A dinosaur persona ("dinosona") I made for StrutEggStealer. She loves it. :)
This is a female egg-stealer. She's cheerful, optimistic, highly spontaneous and fun, patient, yet easily ruffled, and focused. And she has a hat decorated with leaves. Useful for camouflage I suppose. :)
Here (http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/6995/whrm.jpg) is the larger version of this picture. And if you don't like her hat, click here (http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss2/Pangaean/Miscellaneous/MurMur%20Pictures/iu5e.jpg) to remove it.

Adding and practicing backgrounds can really help add a sense of emotion and can make a drawing overall a lot better, so I really encourage you to do them! The only real downside I found with them was that they tend to be tedious at times, but I learned to have fun doing them. :p

I really like your last drawing. Strut's dinosona's hat looks very cute. :) The background also looks very good. :D

What you draw next should be entirely up to you. Whether it be a character you like, another dinosona for someone, or something completely different! :DD

Thanks for your visit, somerandomfangirl. Dinosonas are awesome, life would be too boring without them. :) Though I don't know if anybody wants me to draw a dinosona for them... I offered one to TAP but he hasn't replied to my PM.

A little note: I've just discovered this program called GIMP (thanks to StrutEggStealer for her advice). It looks useful, so I'll spend the next week learning the program. It's just impossible to make good backgrounds with Paint. From this point, I'll be using GIMP to create my pictures. However, there won't be any new art until I'm proficient enough with the thing. Wait for new pictures next week. :)

Ah yes. GIMP is good. It's the program I use to do my drawings on. It's a lot more useful than Paint, if you ask me.

Take your time when it comes to making new art. Programs such as GIMP can be difficult to get used to for some people (I was one of them :lol) but I'm sure you'll be fine with it. I understand the difficulty of backgrounds on Paint sometimes. In the end I stopped trying. :P:

I really ought to make myself a dinosona one day, but surprisingly for me, I've already got a stack of at least two drawings I want to finish before I do that. :o

Heh, that hat's pretty stylin' too!
And good luck with GIMP! It's really a lot of fun and comes with a ton more options.... just requires practice *twitch twitch* and patience *twitch* lol as you can probably guess, I don't have much of either XDD

Here's my first GIMP picture.
I made an animated avatar for StrutEggStealer. This is a portrait of her eggstealer dinosona.

It looks like she's dancing. :) The black background isn't very good, but it's easy to fix.

Wow,for the first animation, that is an amazing job there. The motion blend nicely together, and the picture itself is a nicely looking eggstealer.I remember that in GIMP making animations is fairly time consuming.May I ask how many layers it took to make this animation? The only thing I would suggest is to use a little blur on it,so the edges will be smooth everywhere.

If it's not against your style, and you want to I think you should consider shading. It would add an even better feeling of deepness. This process is very easy in GIMP,and I think you can find a good guide how to do it fast and easily in youtube.
Title: Artwork by MURMUR
Post by: MurMur on August 22, 2013, 09:24:23 PM
Welcome, Blais_13, and thanks for your visit. There are 45 layers (frames) in this picture. I considered doing some shading, but I think it looks good even without it. Shading is good when there is a light source present, but there's none. And I decided not to use blur, because not only it makes the picture somewhat less appealing, it also increases its size. Which makes it slower to load. Not everyone has fast internet connection, right? :)
And nice to meet you again, Ducky123! :)

A grand success. I've discovered a way to make my animations faster to load, so that now I can put high quality textures in them. For example, I've inserted this beautiful background into Strut's new avatar:

4. Watching the sunset.

This is a gift for Ducky123. The picture is probably too dark, but that's because it reflects my current mood.

Wow! This is beautiful :yes
Having tried myself (without much success) to capture the scenery of a glorious sunset I know just how difficult it is to make the light-, shadow-, and color-effects look good. In this pictures they look just amazing. Adding clouds to such a morning sky is another trickery element which you mastered here. Above all however I like the calm reflective mood which I feel the picture gives with Ducky standing there marveling at the sunrise possibly in a thoughtful moment. A special bonus are the whiffs of groundfog in the background on the left which I feel add to the aforementioned reflective mood. I'd wish I could give some constructive criticism as in making suggestions for further improvement in future picture, but while I don't want to sound like I was flattering I just can't spot any fly in the ointment here; just a very, very beautiful and atmospheric picture.

PS: One thing I noticed is that until I read the title I thouht it was a sunrise rather than a sunset, but the perception there can be random I think.

That is a beautiful picture!   :)

I think that the perspective of the picture and the darker hues assist the viewer in focusing on the main focal points of the picture: Ducky and the setting sun.  The darker shade of the picture also allows the viewer to interpret Ducky's expression as a moment of reflection or thoughtfulness, whereas if the picture had lighter hues the same expression might instead be interpreted as melancholy.  The little touches that you have added to the picture (namely the gorgeous clouds) complement it quite nicely.

Very well done, MurMur! I feel honoured  :wow

There is much room for interpretation, thus I think this picture should be added to the 'fanart caption this' section, if you want to, that is... :)

You can be proud about this wonderful picture! I don't think it is too dark, the darkness makes it look somewhat mysterious and I totally like Ducky's expression.

On a side note: I hope you are alright, a friend of mine is in a pretty dark mood herself and.. well, I hope it is nothing serious
You should feel good for what you achieved with this picture instead :)

The lineart is very clear and distinguishes itself very nicely against the highlights and darker hues, really bringing out that REAL factor!
Wow! You're using GIMP? The same program I use? I can never figure out how to get those effects.

This picture is magnificent! :wow The sunrise is gorgeous; I love the gradually diffusing rays of light spanning the sky, and the red glow cast across the landscape. And I love the color pallete; to me it's reminiscent of the original Land Before Time, giving a nostalgic sense to the picture. You also did a fantastic job drawing Ducky; I love the simple, thoughtful expression.

I'll hold off on the constructive criticism for now, since I honestly have very little of it, and I don't know how you feel about my style of critique. In any case, I really hope to see more pictures like this from you. :)

Also, sorry to hear you're depressed, MurMur. :( I hope you feel better soon.
