Title: Strange Weather
Post by: F-14 Ace on December 28, 2005, 05:14:41 PM
I was just out riding my bike when all hell broke loose!  In Alabama, we do not get snow in the winter.  We get rain.  However,it has been unusually warm today.  It still gets cold this time of year and it is 80 degrees right now!  Usually tornado weather!  It is normally 40* F here but it is 82*.  Plus, we have been having very, and I mean VERY heavy thunderstorms all day.  The sky did clear up for a bit and I thought the storm was gone.  I was riding my bike and the sky was clear.  then, the sky got black and iI mean black clouds and, a huge thunderstorm came out of nowhere.  I peddeled home as fast as I could.  It started pouring like crazy right after I got in the house.  Man, it is dark and scarry outside.  Behold, Alabama's wierd weather.  It can be clear one minute and two seconds later there can be a raging thunderstorm like the one raging outside even as I type.  Two years ago, we were whitewater rafting in Pratville, Alabama on a clear day.  As soon as we got out of the water, a thunderstorm popped up.  Of course, it was summer so a sudden thunderstorm was not unusual but four people,(we didn't know),  were hit by lightning at some river event.  Last Easter, we had a huge tornado outbreak.  :o  :(      :cry2

We are having even more strange weather today.  It is foggy and there is thunder and the sky is all yellow looking.  Wierd. <_<

When you get a yellow sky that means there's one heck of a storm coming.  You don't see that very often around here, but summertime is the only real time when you might see something as severe as that, at least around here.

Keep safe and aware of the weather forcast is my only suggestion.  I know one time during my summer classes a very severe storm went through and I did end up having to drive home in it, and you couldn't see anything in front of your car's hood practically...it was raining that hard.  :o  Scary.

Well, like I said, Alabama's weather can change in the blink on an eye.  We did get a small thunderstorm but that was it.  Now it is a bright, sunny day but a bit windy.  There are still some dark clouds but that is all. :)

There have been temperatures of about -30 degrees in parts of Germany as well (which is REALLY very uncommon). It is not that bad in the densly settled region where I live. I actually like the waking effect of the dry and cold air.

It's cold over here. But we haven't had any snow on the ground since Christmas.  And other parts of the state have at least six inches of snow on the ground.  And the only snow we've had just dusted the surface.  But it HAS been very cold and gusty here. In this part of my state the winds can get up to extremly fast speeds.  A few weeks ago the wind was blowing as 87 miles an hour!!  Two tractor trailers and one RV blew over that day.  Not much snow up here, but a lot of extremly gusty winds.

There isn't much snow at the moment right where I live. However a bit further south buildings are collapsing because the roofs can't carry the weight of the snow anymore.
Which state are you from Cyberlizard?

I'd guess he's from Montana....unless he's buying internet service from another state.  :P:

I actually think the weather here in NY is much more frigid than what even Montana is getting right about now.

Correct! :DD   I'm from Montana, well known for its urban legend surrounding cowboys.  Montana is also well known for Paleontologist Jack Horner and his discovery at Egg Mountain.  Bozeman MT is home to the famous Museum of the Rockies.  When I lived in Bozeman I used to go there for at least six hours.  I loved it there.  But now I'm in an isolated little town in between Livingston and Billings where the wind blows every single day.  The weather up here is also very unpredictable.  Five years ago, it snowed two feet in June.  Power lines snapped and trees branches broke under the weight.   But Montana is also a very beautiful place in the summer time.  Very hot and humid.  But the winter storms from Canada bring the Temprature down to -15 degrees farenheit just like that.  But Montana is full of geological beauty.  Like this photo I took of the Crazy mountains.

Cool! So you live quite close to Yellowstone National Park and not too far from Little Big Horn either (both places I would love to visit some day), not to mention the fact that there are few places where as many different dinosaur fossils have been found as in Montana. Whenever the (half-serious half-joking) discussion about the location of the Great Valley in our world was started, I stated the opinion that it must have been in Montana.
Actually there is not a place in the world where all the different kinds of dinosaurs have been found which we see in LBT (not to mention the fact that they lived ages apart from each other), but in Montana many of them were found. Also Montana is far enough north so there could be an Aurora Borealis (as the one we see in LBT 3 which rules out any locations close to the equator).

The Last aurora borealis I saw was four years ago, and I remember it quite vividly.  It was a beautiful mixture of green and red.  And yes, I live very close to Yellowstone, about an hour and a half's drive, it's also a pretty site on the trip over there.  You go through Paradise Valley which is famous for the "Chico Hot Springs" resort and not to mention Emigrant Peak, at eleven thousand feet high.  But its been a while since I went to Yellowstone.  I guess when you live next to a national icon you sort of take it for granted.  I should go back there, take some photos and post them on this site. :DD

It's been a Crazy winter here so far!

Throughout most of January, my area was setting new records for high temperatures, up in range of +10 to +16 celcius.  The last couple of weeks have been fairly cold (around -8 to -20) but not brutally cold.  Today, we got more snow than we've had all year, and it's still snowing!  It's about -6 right now.

but the classiest thing:  about 2 weeks ago waiting for the bus in the afternoon, it was snowing fairly hard, but the sun was shining, the sky was quite clear, it was bright out, and it couldnt' have been any colder than -1 or so.  It was fantastic - the weirdest thing I think I'veen seen, weather-wise in a long time.

It just gets wet here in the winter.  It is cloudy and rainy outside right now.  Temperatures usually don't get very low.  When it snows here, it is just very wet and slushy.  The temperature is 63* F right now.

This winter is the wierdest so far.  First we only get small snow falls that melt within hours, but it gets in between 20 and 40 degrees Farenheit.  At the begining of this week we had below zero temperature and heavy snow and now the temp. skyrockets into the upper 30s and 40s and all of the snow melted.  Talk about wierd wether.

Tell me about it! It was snowing over part of the UK yesterday  It's supposed to be approaching Spring so what's the deal?! IT's supposed to be getting warmer! NOT COLDER!!! It was almost sub-zero yesterday (including wind chill factor!) About -2*C at times. It doesn't help being on the coast where there's a constant breeze off the sea. I'm sitting in my room now listening to the wind howling outside... :( Gawd...I dont wanna have to face it again...I can't stand the cold! <_< Gimme searing heat anyday! :lol

I'm very lucky right now.  Normally, at my university, I could expect a couple of blizzards and regular mild snow all winter.  But this semester, I am at an internship down in Florida, so the weather is always sunny and around 70.

I am a cast member at the Animal Kindom.

Still snow around these parts....and spring doesn't officially start until March 22nd I think so I don't see it going anywhere.  Sometimes its been around 40 or 50 but then we're reminded its winter and its 10.

 WTF????  I just looked at our local weather radar and it says there is a HUGE line of thunderstorms headed my way.  These have been troublemakers, some creating tornadoes.  Now when it is green on the radar, it is only minor but I saw a line of dark red storms heading this way on the radar.  On the good-to-bad scale, that is at the bad end.  We might have large hail and even tornadoes.  Crap, crap, crap!  I'm going to be in for a rough night here.  It is already thundering and there is lightning like crazy outside.  Hell, i'd better get off the computer now! :o  :o      :wow  :bang  :( What a rotten start to spring and srping break!  Well, I'd better log off now.  THere ws just a LOUD boom outside. :o

All this talk about tornadoes is making me feel lucky, getting snow in April :p
It's been a very nice week so far, temperatures ranging from 12 to 20 degrees C(19 C = ~70 F).  It was about 20 today...and they're calling for below-freezing temperatures and some snow on the weekend

Can't the weather make up its mind around here? :lol

I remember two months ago, the wind picked up to 87 Miles and Hour in Livingston!  That day, two big rigs and an RV blew over on interstate 90!  But now that it's April the wind has died down, but the weather still changes as fast as mood swings.

:o     More crappy weather!  We were practicing for the school play until 4:00 today.  It has been cloudy all day but it suddenly got black outside.  Man!  The sun is usually still up at that time but it was dark as night.  Now, we have a flood warning, severe thunderstorm warning, and a tornado watch in our area!  It is red on the radar.  More crap is on the way.  There is a massive line of storms headed our way that streaches all the way to Texas!  We are going to have a rough night.  Luckily, I live far from any rivers and streams so there is little chance of getting flooded.  However, the drains outside are flooded.  Lightning is everywhere.  A bolt struck a tree in the woods just behind our house!  :o   Anyway, I'm going to go swimming and climb on the roof, jump around and shout "I am a human lightning rod!  Strike me! :P: Just kiddine! :P:
What?! Florida is having drought problems and fires while we are getting soaked here in Alabama!  Just one state away!

^ I'm surprised your computer wasn't fried, and you're online besides in severe weather.  Very good way to kill your computer...unplug it and just wait out the storm.  We'll be here tomorrow, and the day after, etc. etc.

Yes, weather certainly is strange...drought in one area, saturation in another....all depends on the winds.

My computer wasn't pluged i when I was logged on.  I unpluged it after I got home and was running it from its battery.  Now it seems the worst is past us for the moment.  Anyway, we are expecting more storms tonight.  I was at play practice so I couldn't very well unplug it when the storm began.

Oh, god.     Really, you should come up to Montana.  There's a water park a few miles away from my town called "Big Timber Waterslide".  And it's mostly dry up here, so we hardly get any severe thunder storms.  There are Tornadoes in the flat, eastern part of MT.  But we get only one or two F1s a year. What a mess!  I wasn't able to talk about this yesterday because the internet was down but we had a pretty nasty tornado come through yesterday.  It came within half a mile of my house.  There was an uprooted tree that got carried down to the end of the street and some of the houses got roof damage.  Then the tornado knocked out power to most of this side of town.  somehow we didn't lose power at my house.  Then the tornado leveled Fun Zone which is a daycare center and after school hangout.  Luckily, there were only minor injuries which is amazing because the entire building was reduced to twisted rubble.  Most of the schools including mine were closed down and all the students sent home because they said more storms were comming.  Most of the roads used to access my neighborhood were closed at first though due to downed powerlines and trees.  THere is also this yellow insulation stuff everywhere.  I don't know where it came from but I;m guessing the construction site nearby.  TV was out and the internet was down all of yesterday.  Tornados also hit other parts of the state but amazingly, no lives were lost.  I heard some moron blaming it all on global warming but actually, this is the fall tornado season in this part of the country.  Its normal for this time of year.  Global warming doesn't cause every single storm that comes along you know.  As a matter of fact, that was the only tornado we have had so far.  Anyway, our house didn't get damaged but we have a mess to clean up.  I guess we got lucky this time.

I saw the Fun Zone on the way home from school.  The building is almost completely flattened except for one corner.  That was a concrete building with steel beams and it has been reduced to twisted rubble.  And the apartements across the street have had their whole top floors ripped off.  The postoffice has also taken damage so all of our mail is being sent to Birmingham and Mobile.

Oy!  If there is anything I really like about this area of the country; no nasty weather!

Well...okay I shouldn't say that.  Tornados do occur from time to time (say, once a year or so) just north of my hometown, mainly in rural areas, but no tornado has ever (on record at least) touched down within these city limits.  We had a tornado warning last year but it didn't amount to anything more than a thunderstorm.  I was at work at the time, outside, and got to watch the whole thing first-hand! :lol

Aside from the somewhat cold temperatures (-25 C +a wind chill on an extremel cold winter day) in the winter, conditions are fairly mild here.  Summers tend to be very sunny with the odd thunderstorm with temperatures in the 20-30C range.  Winters tend to be an average of -5C to about -15C most days, with moderate amounts of snow.  Thankfully, the city is very well-equipped to handle snowstorms and winter driving conditions, and roads are cleaned up very quickly.  Of course, like anywhere else with ice and snow, people seem to forget how to drive in the winter, on ice! The local news is always packed full of fender-benders during the first couple of snowfalls of the year. :p

Ugh, okay.  This week has been colder than we've seen here for a few years!  Since friday, the temperature has been constantly below -20C, reaching nearly -40C with the wind chill at night.  My car isn't a big fan of this weather, nor am I!  It's -24C out right now (-34 with the wind chill), yet it's been fairly sunny.
-41 tonight and -43 tomorrow night!  Yeah....that's cold!

My car simply refused to start on sunday; I needed to get a boost because the battery nearly died from trying to start it.  Thankfully it's running fine now, but it will only start if the block heater is left plugged in!

The local forecast is showing that the weather will subside soon, with temperatures reaching -1 on thursday and 0 on friday.  Thank goodness; too much more of this and we'd scare away the tourists! :lol

Conclusion: I don't like winter! :P:

Over here you can still walk around in T-Shirts! A few days ago it was more than 20 degrees Celsius!
Last year at the same time it was clearly below 0 and we had some blizzards which caused electricity to fail in a large region north from where I live. One extreme is following the other!

It sounds to me like we basically swapped weather from last year, Malte!

Last year was one of the mildest winters on record here.  It barely dropped into the negatives and was warm until at least January.  There wasn't a speck of snow on the ground at christmas; if I recall correctly, it was about 10 C on Christmas day last year. :lol

That sounds rather...unpleasant.  Yesterday, this region set a record of "Highest energy consumption ever in a single day".  This was due to so many people plugging their cars in and heating their homes and buildings, combined with the ever-increasing population here.  Mind you, that is only a local record, not a world record.  Even so, it's not something to be particularily proud of <_<

And on this end it is completely the other way round! Hardly a snowflake in the sky this winter. We had almost 20 degrees celsius in January! It is the warmest winter in recorded history over here. They expect the warmest ever summer now. I'm afraid of being broiled in my room below the roof this summer!
