The Written Word / Big Sister, Little Brother
« on: January 30, 2011, 06:37:26 PM »
A chapter story where each chapter has a new plot. But the overall story summary is two sibling praying mantises and their rivalry that will always bring on a sweet moment in the end. This is one of those stories I wrote for the sheer fun-ness of it, so enjoy the spazziness of my mind's creation.  :DD

-~-

Summary: 2 Mantises+ 1 Cookie= 1 Pissed off Mantis

Chapter 1

"Gimme!" The tiny mantis Hisoka yelped, hopping up and down with arms held up, trying the grab the object of interest from his older sister, Harmony. But the larger mantis showed no signs of sharing and even went a step further. Smiling playfully, she held out the cookie as if offering it to her little bro. But when he tried to snatch at it, her more experience reflexes allowed her to lift the food thing out of the youngster's reach. "Gim-"

"Oh no, little Hisoka. Baby mantises can't eat this stuff." Harmony interrupted. Hisoka stomped his front right leg and glared with his large chibi eyes.

"Why not?!" He demanded an answer. Harmony held in a laugh at her sibling's attitude before continuing her game, practically holding the object in his face.

"Because it's too much to handle. So good and delicious and tasty a-"

"MINE!!!!" Hisoka lunged for it, but Sister Mantis saw it coming and once more jerked the cookie away, laughing and about to take a mocking bite out of the treat. The toddler insect's eyes widened. "NO!!!" He lunged again and climbed onto his sister.

"Get off, pipsqueak!" Harmony yelled playfully, thrashing half-heartedly. This was all still fun and games for her. It's awesome being the oldest, you get to constantly remind your siblings that you're the one in charge. And she's female, so she'll be larger than all her brothers throughout their lives, something she's bound never to let them forget.

"I'm no pipsqueak!" Hisoka...well....squeaked, trying his best to grab that cookie! He's never had one before and he so wanted to try it! He so wanted to HAVE IT!!! Plus, Harmony had it and whatever she has, he tries to steal and vice versa. Harmony is just a heck of a lot better at stealing his things than he was with hers. Again, that older sister superiority... She kept laughing even as her brother managed to take the cookie because he was so small compared to her that she could easily hold him up too. Hisoka clung stubbornly to the food, trying to yank it out of his sister's grip without any success. "I want it!" He shot.

"You can't have it!" Harmony shot back in a more amused tone. She lifted the cookie (and her brother's dangling form) up and down, over and over. A thoughtful look came to her. "You're so light for a nymph. You need to eat more..."

"I will if you gimme!!" Hisoka persisted, still clinging on to the cookie like his life depended on it. With such a stubborn grip, he'll make a great predator someday. Though, at the moment, Harmony will never admit that! Or admit the fact that, out of their hundreds of siblings, Hisoka was her favorite.....Well, maybe she'll admit it if one adds the three words 'to pick on' after 'favorite'.

"I'll give it to you if you say the magic word." Hisoka was quick to respond.

"No!" The dreaded magic word; he'd shudder in horror if he wasn't busy attempting to steal the cookie, 'attempting' being the key word. Harmony smiled.

"You sure? 'Cause it's soooo good and tasty beyond bel-"

Hisoka couldn't take it anymore. "Please!" Harmony wasn't done yet. Oh no, the torture had one more classic step to go.

"Please what.....?" Hisoka glared cutely at her and she just kept that triumphant smile. Her victory was sure. Finally, after five minutes of that staring contest, Hisoka fidgetted and muttered incoherently. Harmony's smile widened and she said in a sing-song voice. "I can't hear you."

"PLEASE GIMME!!!" Hisoka screeched. Harmony shrugged.

"Okay." Letting go of the cookie, she watched as Hisoka scurried off under a mushroom nearby with his prize and took his first bite......

"BLEH!!!....Ewwwww...." Harmony laughed as Hisoka threw the cookie away in disgust. Mantises don't really like cookies, she knew that all along...But Hisoka didn't. Ahhhhh, her prank for the day ended in success. Victory, unlike the cookie, tasted so sweet.

Still giggling, she turned to walk away. "Now you know next time, pipsqueak. Never mess with...." She trailed off when she heard sniffling and she turned her head to find her little brother sitting there silently, crying his eyes out with accompanying hiccups. Okay....She can be a mean sister with the teasing and pranks and all, but she's not completely heartless. She did have sympathy for her siblings on occasion and this was one of those occasions....Sighing, she wandered over, knowing just what will cheer him up.....

A few minutes later, brother and sister were sitting side by side under the mushroom, happily sharing and nibbling on a tastier cookie: .....A large cockroach......

--

Big Sibling Moral: It's good to harass your little brother/sister! Makes those cute, bonding moments even sweeter!

Little Sibling Moral: Don't be in a hurry, you might not like what you get; sit and wait (and shed a few tears) for the yummies to come to you via your big sister/brother!

Ask Me / Ask FBS' Pets
« on: January 29, 2011, 08:14:30 PM »
I thought this would be fun to do since Rat_lady7's topic of asking questions to her 2 kitties seems like fun. And I also thought it might help with some grieving issues I still have for my lost pets, intensified even more by the current and depressing event of Caramel's aging symptoms.

You can ask any of the pets any question you want. The list of my pets are as follows...

"Lost" Pets:
Fluffy the cat
Spazz the ferret
Shoogy and Gliga the sugar gliders
Fuz-Bal and Boba the gerbils
Terror the milksnake
Monster the bearded dragon
Justin the pug
Fudge the chinchilla
Rainbow the beta fish
Morphius the soft-shelled turtle
A small 'flock' of budgerigar birds (really, I couldn't tell them apart, so names were next to useless here.....  :oops )
Various insects, including some mantids, some tiger beetles, four ant farms, a stag beetle, and an assassin bug
Marble (who was the most recent to join this list a few months ago... :( ) and Caramel (who joined a few days ago... :cry ) the rats.

Current Pets:
Domino the ratty
More buggies; this time being 2 Asian mantis', five tiger beetles, and an antlion

Ask away!!!  :D

The Written Word / Insect War
« on: January 28, 2011, 05:40:40 PM »
This is one of my most popular original stories. It was inspired by the many videos of honeybees vs hornets. With my love of insects, I couldn't help myself. The story's like A Bug's Life or something, but a bit more.....natural. Without further ado, here's the summary.....

Summary: A young bee's colony is attacked by their worst enemy. How can she possibly survive?

....and here's a cover I drew for this particular story (Yay!! More lazy work!!  :DD )...

.....and here's the Prologue....

-~-

In the mountainside of Japan, a lone wooden cabin sits undisturbed in a clearing surrounded by serene forests. But its inhabitants are far from undisturbed. They got things to do, some of them with places to go. Up here, flowers don't always stay long and they have to take advantage while they still can! They were as busy as bees...

Literally...

"Hungry!! Hungry!! Hungry!!" came the chant of the baby bees. Young worker bees rushed from honeycomb to honeycomb, feeding their younger sisters with a mixture of pollen and nectar. Yet the babies had endless appetites and they would continue the mantra immediately after they swallowed their food. It never ended...

The whole hive was a bustle of activity. Foragers came and went. Guards checked each returning bee for the correct ID smell. Builders sculpted their wax secretions into hexagonal cells. Cleaners picked up after their hive mates. Receivers took the goods from Foragers and placed them into the cells. Mixers turned the nectar into honey by stirring it and fanning it. Nurses cares for the young ones and the Queen, who laid hundreds of eggs every hour.

Drones did absolutely nothing...

Mai Mai, one of the busy Nurses, shot a look at the closest group of Drones and she let out a huff of disdain. She didn't like her brothers' laziness, but like all her sisters, she tolerates them...at least until late fall comes. When that time of year arrives, the hive can kick the Drones out to die of starvation. A harsh punishment, but justifiable.

With a buzz of her wings, she continued on her way across the hive's honeycombs, heading towards the nursery for her shift. She had to push her way through hundreds of her other siblings, climbing over some, but she was used to these crowded conditions. She actually liked it a bit, as it was warm and reassuring to be among one's kin.

"Mai." The young bee felt a gentle nudge on the right side of her abdomen and she turned around to meet antennae-to-antennae with her Forager friend and favorite sister, Sashi. The older bee still had a full bundle of pollen on her hind-most legs and it was obvious that she didn't meet a Receiver yet.

"Want me to put those away for you?" Mai Mai asked excitedly, bouncing up and down with a buzz of her wings. She's been waiting for an opportunity like this! However, she saw Sashi tilt her head and lift an antenna questioningly.

"You're not old enough for that job." she pointed out. Honeybees were divided by age, put from task-group to task-group as she got older. That way, if building stuff wasn't your thing, you'll be practicing something new soon enough. These two were on opposite sides of the spectrum: Mai Mai just emerged from her pupa cell a few days ago and Sashi is just short of 5 weeks old, close to the end of her lifespan. She's expected to die a Forager.

But as for Mai Mai, she was unfazed by this rule, which she felt was made to be broken. Time for her favorite motto in life: "It's never too early to practice."

"I don't know...I still remember what happened last time..." the older bee muttered, memories of the somehow wrecked honeycombs came to her mind. Mai paused awkwardly, her own memories flashing in her head. But it didn't take long for her eagerness to resume.

"It was all fixed....I'll be more careful this time!" She widened her now glistening eyes and pulled off the cutest face she can muster. "Please...."

Sashi gave out a sigh of resignation, wondering why she was unable to resist that face, and listlessly passed the nectar to the Nurse. Mai Mai was also quick to gather the pollen afterward and hurried to the food storage cells, the Forager following close behind to make sure her over-enthusiastic sister didn't mess things up again, which would be highly expected...

--

Meanwhile in the branches of a nearby bush, a Giant Hornet scout watched the hive from a safe distance. But even this precaution won't last long. The hornet was only taking a short rest from his journey here. Earlier at the start of the day, his leader had sent him to find a bee hive and mark the spot for future take-over.

It wasn't a difficult job. He was 5 times the size of the bees and 20 times heavier. His thick shell will protect him from enemy stings and his deadly jaws can kill his rivals without any effort. He himself can wipe out 40 bees in a single minute. Add to that the fact that he's also one of the best soldiers in his colony, favored highly by his superiors. He had every reason to be confident.

"Any second..." he muttered to himself in a gruff voice signature to the males of his species. He waited for the last of the returning Foragers to enter the hive and then he tensed restlessly. It was time.

He flew closer, bending the tip of his abdomen down to reveal a fleshy scent gland, which immediately trailed pheromones...

--

Antennae perked up and the Guard bees became very agitated. They've picked up the scent of a hornet...a Giant Hornet. Without hesitation, they backed into the hive entrance and let out the alarm, shouting and jerking waves through the crowds. The colony has faced scouting hornets before and they knew how to react. "Hornet Alert! To arms! Be prepared! You all know what to do!"

Mai Mai and Sashi picked up the alarm, along with hundreds of others. They gathered around the Guards, all facing the entrance, waiting for their arch enemy to show himself.

--

The hornet landed cautiously at the ledge leading to the nest. He had seen the bees retreat inside and couldn't help but wonder what they were up to. Other scouts had mysteriously disappeared on their missions and he didn't want to be one of them. With hesitant steps, he crawled inside...

...And was immediately engulfed in a mob of bees. He struggled, killing those unfortunate enough to be near his powerful jaws. He tried to back out, but couldn't, his claws leaving furrows in the wooden floor beneath him. He was overwhelmed as the bees he managed to kill was pushed out of the pile and replaced with new insects.

The bees did not waste their time on stinging. They were experienced enough to know that it'll have no effect. Instead, they vibrated their bodies, slowly and steadily warming the bug bundle.

"Kill him!! Kill him!! Kill him!!" came the aggressive mantra as the bees continued their group defense.

The hornet felt the heat of the bees' bodies rising and so was his own...to a dangerous level. Knowing this was quickly becoming lethal, he struggled all the more viciously.

Meanwhile, Mai Mai clung to the intruder's abdomen just over the base of his stinger, but taking care not to be too near the end where she might end up getting impaled. This was her first time confronting a Giant Hornet and although the size of the enemy was intimidating, she felt her courage multiply with the number of her sisters.

Just then, something gooey and cool nudged against the underside of her thorax, but she ignored it. She just shivered more vigorously, trying her best to copy what all the other bees were doing. In this situation, it's best to follow the crowd.

The hornet scout felt the furry body of a bee rub against his scent gland and he managed to look back at the source. He saw that it was a young bee, not even a week old yet. Despite the situation, he gave quite a menacing grin. If his colony attacks this hive, this bee will be recognized as one of his assaulters. And knowing his leader, this little one will be made to suffer.

His body heat reached the lethal level. He was hit with a seizure and white saliva dripped from his jaws. Not ready to accept his fate, he made one last violent jerk backwards, using all his strength. This time, he managed to get free of the pile and tumbled out of the entrance. With a few bees still clinging to him, he fell from the ledge and collided with the ground. His body shook one more time and he went still.

The bees let go of him and immediately assumed he was dead. Flying back to the hive, the bees went on with their work as if nothing had happened.

Moments later, the hornet scout twitched and revived. He was far too weak and knew that he wouldn't last much longer. But he wanted to die with his mission successful. That was the one thought in his mind. Summoning the very last of his strength, he shifted his abdomen until the scent gland touched the wooden wall of the cabin. He rubbed the wet pheromones onto the surface, marking the hive's location for his colony to find, raid, and destroy.

His body convulsed once more and he went into his death throes, his body thrashing uncontrollably for another minute. Afterwards, he laid still on his back, wings spread to their full extent, legs drawn to his thorax, his abdomen curled inwards.

Staring at the sky, where Forager bees flew back and forth, he forced out a dark chuckle. "Enjoy it now...you miserable bees...My colony and I...will have the...last...laugh..." His vision blackened and he allowed himself to be folded in Death's dark wings.

The Written Word / Power of Pets
« on: January 28, 2011, 03:36:53 AM »
This story is an original story that I wrote a while ago, back when I still had the pets this story's dedicated to. Now that they've been given away before we moved, and some had probably died since then  :cry , this story holds something especially dear to me. Now, which pets you might ask? Well, for this story.....

IN DEDICATION TO:

Shoogy (who's the main character) and Gliga, the Sugar Gliders
Fudge, the Chinchilla
Fuz-Bal and Boba, the Gerbils

AND IN VAGUE FORM (Names, Species, and Personalities altered for story purposes) :

Spazz the ferret, who will appear in this story as a stoat
Terror the milksnake, who will appear as a rattlesnake
Marble the rat, who will appear as wild Norway rat

IN EXTRA SPECIAL MEMORY:

RIP Marble
2007-2010
A lovable rodent that will be missed by her cagemate and human friend!!  :cry

Now, without further ado, here's the summary and the Prologue

Summary:
A group of pets become seperated from their families and have to find a way back. And in order to survive long enough to return home, they have to figure out who's their friends and who's their enemies.

--

Prologue

The door opened and Shoogy woke up from her day-time slumber. She looked over to the cage bars and saw her human friend come inside the room, carrying her heavy book bag. Stretching with a yawn, she was alert enough to get up and nudge her twin sister. They looked just about the same and the only way to tell them apart was Shoogy's tail. Unlike other sugar gliders, Shoogy had a white color at the very end of her long mostly-black appendage.

After much nudging and prompting, the other sugar glider stirred and drowsily licked Shoogy's muzzle.

"Another bad dream there, Shoogy?" she asked. Said glider shook her head eagerly.

"No. Terry's home early. Time to play."

Her sister, Gliga, glanced at the blinds with a yawn of her own. Dull sunlight seeped between them. Seeing that, she curled right back up.

"Still light out. Go without me. I was up late the other day." Gliga said. Shoogy was a bit disappointed, but decided that her sister deserved the rest. After all, she was only up 'late' in the day (by nocturnal standards) because the more timid marsupial had a bad dream and needed comforting.

Shoogy raced to the door of their multi-story cage as fast as she could and called out to her human. She knew they couldn't understand each other, their words were meaningless noise, right? But she learned Terry's name because all the other humans made that noise when near her. So the sounds weren't all meaningless.

"Play with me, mate! I'm ready for some fun!"

Terry looked at her with a smile and went right over. She opened the cage door and Shoogy immediately thought it was her duty to climb up her human's arm to her shoulder. There, she sniffed Terry's ear, mostly because it tickles her friend....and because it smells very interesting in there, though she didn't really like how sticky stuff occasionally got on her nose.

Terry placed Shoogy on the curtains of the window and Shoogy climbed to the very top. The human girl made a noise that Shoogy had learned; it meant that she wanted her to glide down. The tiny furball didn't want to disappoint, knowing this might end in the chance of a tasty treat. She measured the distance quickly and jumped, spreading the membrane between her arms and legs as far as she could get them.

She was aiming for Terry's shoulder, but instead latched onto her face. She corrected herself quickly, a bit embarrased at how she messed up such a simple trick, even though Terry thought the accident was pretty funny and awarded her anyway.

Terry gave her pet a grape and the little sugar glider grabbed it and ate it happily. She loves grapes. It's her favorite food, as it had been since the moment she could eat solid food.

Riding on her friend's head, quite comfortable on that spot, they went out the room downstairs. Terry was saying stuff to Shoogy, who listened carefully like a real friend should. Language made no difference. Shoogy knows that Terry loves her no matter what. And the sound and sweet tone of the voice was very much good enough for her.

Downstairs, Shoogy stared at the noisy and flashy black box. She tilted her head, wondering why it was showing the dark cloudy sky. Nothing interesting seemed to be happening. No matter, she was sure it wasn't important. Terry's father and mother were watching the box intently while Terry went to the kitchen for a snack. She talked to her parents while eating a banana, giving a piece to Shoogy. As the glider nibbled on the fruit, she looked out towards the glass door leading to the patio. It was dark, just like what they're showing on the box. She always finds it strange how that happens.

Shoogy was finished with her treat when Terry opened the glass door to take a small step outside. The young sugar glider sniffed the breeze and the scent caused shivers of cold down her spine, making her fur fluff a bit. Something was wrong. Very wrong. She didn't know what, but it scared her. Badly.

Weird thing is, Terry didn't seem to notice it. She just looked around, staring at the sky for a long moment. Then she went back in.

Shoogy was feeling uneasy since then. She was uneasy when she played, uneasy when nibbling on more snacks, and was even more uneasy as she was put back in her cage. Without hesitation, she made a beeline to her sister.

"Gliga. Wake up! I'm scared!" Upon hearing those words from her sister, Gliga shot up on instinct and groomed Shoogy gently and thoroughly.

"It's alright. What happened?" she asked when Shoogy calmed down enough. Shoogy shuddered.

"Something's wrong outside. Look."

Gliga looked through the blinds and noticed that the sun was no longer shining. The sky was really dark despite it being day time. Strange. She's never seen anything like this before, but she didn't want to alarm her sister more than she already was.

"Crikey....Maybe it's just another storm..." Gliga muttered in reassurance. Shoogy shook her head, face flooded with worry.

"No. It smells weird. It smells different. It smells...dangerous."

Silence. After a long moment, they shivered and cuddled tightly to each other.

"Don't wanna die, Gliga. I have my whole life ahead of me..."

Gliga nodded and tried to comfort Shoogy. "We have to get our mate, Terry. The sheila'll know what to do."

As if on cue, Terry raced in the room in a panicked manner, yanking the cage door open. Her father and mother raced after her and dragged her out of the room, away from the two sugar gliders. Terry was obviously upset about something, yelling as she was pulled out of the room. Shoogy and Gliga cautiously went out their cage, wondering what that was all about.

"What's goin' on?" Shoogy asked. Gliga sniffed intently, as if hoping that'll answer the question. Shoggy didn't know how, but she wasn't gonna question her twin's actions.

"We have to get out of here, Shoogy."

Following her sister, Shoogy glided down to the floor and ran out the room. And after gliding down the stairs, they paused and sniffed some more before heading for an open door. Any open door. It was unlikely that they'll find one, but they needed a way out. Luckily for them, the front door was wide open and the two sugar gliders made a break for it. Once outside, they noticed something.

A huge tornado was coming their way. Panicked, the sugar gliders ran away as fast as they could, trying to at least find a hole in the ground or locate their owner. Anything to get them away from this massive force of nature. A great wind came up from the funnel cloud, blowing against the tiny marsupials from behind. They took advantage of it to speed their retreat. It would be tricky, but by opening their membranes and angling them just right, they jumped high and glided into the wind.

Things seemed to go well with that, until a slipstream changed and began to suck Shoogy towards the demon cloud.

"Gliga!" Shoogy yelled in intense fear. She didn't know what was going to happen. Would the tornado eat her, like she ate that grape and banana? Gliga looked back at her sister and saw the trouble. Eyes widening and ears pinned, she followed the slipstream carrying Shoogy and roughly pushed her sibling out of the wind. Gentle was not an option here.

Without the wind to support her, Shoogy fell to the ground clumsily, startled and forgetting to glide. Shakily, she stood to her four paws and looked up hopefully. But her one hope was crushed. Gliga was gone, sucked into the storm, the twister changing direction and heading away from the remaining furball, as if it got what it wanted. Alone for the first time in her life, Shoogy whimpered and cried until she could cry no more.

But soon, she would be far from alone.

Visual Art / Hornet Love
« on: January 27, 2011, 08:58:34 PM »
Who says bugs are heartless?

Anywho, this is my lazy work.... Regardless of that, I like how it turned out. This is Shon and Namida, two Japanese Giant Hornets.....slightly anthropomorphized. I have a deep love of insects (they're almost never appreciated!!) and these hornets are among my favorites. I have a story I wrote that I'll post if anyone shows interest here... Summary will be written below in case anyone's interested. :^.^:

The characters in this pic:
Shon is the large male hornet with the standarized design and Namida is the smaller female with a more 'feminine' design. Yes, I know most male insects are smaller than the females (and that they lack stingers), but let me have my fun!  :D

Story Summary:
Ever watched the videos on youtube of these hornets fighting a whole colony of honeybees? I was inspired by that and so wrote a story centered around a young worker bee as her colony's attacked by Giant Hornets. And who's leading the assault? Why, none other than Shon himself.

The Written Word / Death of Love
« on: January 27, 2011, 05:52:10 PM »
An original story inspired by one of my favorite songs, Death of Love by Cradle of Filth. At the time this was written, I had a deep obsession with the dinosaur Therizinosaurus and wanted to make a story of one. This was the result.

Summary: The last day of a young adult Therizinosaurus' life and he reflects on how his eventual demise came to be.

--

~Her penultimate sighs
Called softly on the kindling winds
Her saintly eyes, filling with tears, lifting with truth
And then a golden flash like the onset of Heaven
Leaving her screams, Breaking my heart
And in the grip of fire
I knew the death of love~

He didn't know where he is nor did he care. The Therizinosaurus just wandered aimlessly by the shore of a large lake. Though there was water, he did not drink. Though there were many a tree in the surrounding forests, he did not eat. He just couldn't work up a thirst or an appetite. He just moved at a slow, listless pace, his four clawed feet leaving deep impressions in the soft sand as he walked, arms limp and the tip of his meter long claws dragging neat furrows in the ground.

He's been like this for many weeks, eating nothing and drinking little. And this was obvious by his emaciated state, his scaly skin stretched painfully over the many bones of his skeleton. Although feeling very ill at the moment, sickness was not the cause of this. In fact, he was a very healthy dinosaur, a prime specimen of his kind. If anything, he made the choice to sink this low.

And in this evening light, he sank even lower right onto the ground, every movement agony. He knew by instinct that he would not be able to stand again. It didn't matter anyways; it's not as if he had anything left to live for. He lost everything: his mate, his children, his home. His health plummeting, his dignity shattered. Never to be regained again. He lost everything to a freak accident of nature.

Exhaling heavily through his nostrils in a soft, almost-inaudible grunt, he squeezed his eyes shut as memories of that fateful day flashed in his head like a far away dream…

--

Storm clouds, the first of the wet season, were gathering in the horizon as a pair of strange-looking dinosaurs moved about a distance from the forest edge that was their primary home. They were mates, as they had been since their first breeding season, and they were tending to their nest of newly-laid eggs. The timing was perfect if the young chicks were to enjoy the full benefits the rains will bring.

The female laid herself beside her nest, spreading her massive claws over them to shade them from the heat as her mate gathered more nest material. Standing tall like the proud father he was, he searched through the branches of the trees, dead leaves falling to land by his feet. Though they were brittle from the dry season, they'll still provide enough shade for the eggs. Finding the branch with the most leaves, he grabbed it in his jaws, his own massive claws rising to cut through the fragile branch.

Carrying the branch over to the nest, he offered it to his mate, who took it in her mouth in turn and gingerly laid it over the eggs. She nudged the branch a bit with her snout into a position where it'll give the most shelter, then lifted her head to nuzzle her partner. He returned the gesture before rising up to look in the direction of the fast-approaching clouds.

Bright flashes appeared in quick bursts within the clouds and he grunted. Lightning wasn't unusual and experience assured him that there was nothing to be alarmed with. The nest was on a reasonably high mound, so floodwaters won't be an issue. Besides, this was a relieving sign. Dry, brittle leaves were not appetizing and fresh foliage will be much appreciated.

The female therizinosaur stood up, shook herself off, and headed into the forest to forage for what little edible substance was left. The male stood guard over the nest, waiting patiently for his mate to return so he may go off to look for food. Spreading his claws over the brood of eggs to discourage nest-thieves, he relaxed and closed his eyes for a small light nap, enjoying the serene weather while he could.

It was thunder that woke him about an hour later. With a soft rumble, he peered up at the sky above, finding it dark enough to rival the night. Looking about his surroundings, he found his mate was still gone and the eggs still safe under his hand claws, only slightly covered with sand blown from the wind. It took him a moment to realize that the winds were only getting stronger by the moment and he shifted position to shield his progeny.

He watched as more lightening flashed, cringing involuntarily at each round of thunder, practically feeling the powerful rumbles through the earth into his own body. He tried his best to ignore all this, ready to shift again when the rain starts to cover the nest. But if there was one thing he could not ignore, it was a strong scent in the wind. He didn't recognize the scent, but it had a very alarming, dangerous edge.

Standing, he lifted his head as high as his long neck could stretch. In the darkness, he could see an ominous orange light illuminating the horizon, a dark plume rising into the sky. Cocking his head, he squinted his eyes and evaluated this phenomenon as best he could. This was the strangest sunset he's ever seen and as he stood for a good quarter of an hour, the sunset seems to be coming closer at fast pace.

Then came another rumble, this one different from the thunder's. This one had a rhythm, almost like heavy foot-falls. Then, out of the forest scrambled many small creatures, from lizards to a pack of swift-running Velociraptor. Only mildly alerted by this, he stepped back a bit to stand over the nest to keep it from being trampled. He watched as the small critters dashed passed him, his mind trying to grasp the meaning of this mini stampede.

He thought he had the answer when the source of the heavy footsteps revealed itself. It was a Tarbosaurus, his prime natural enemy. It burst out of the forest and was running in his direction and the male therizinosaur instinctively spread his claws in a threat display, screeching at the large predator. But surprisingly, the carnivore went around him and kept running.

The male was confused and looked back, watching the tyrannosaur catch up with the retreating group of animals. But it wasn't hunting and ran right passed the slower ones of the group, letting out a panicked roar. He didn't know what was going on, but it must be major if it sent the apex predator of the area packing in a hurry.

Turning to the wind, he regarded the strange sunset once more, but winced as thick smoke began clouding his vision and sense of smell. He lowered his body and head enough to get clear of the tarry cloud, trying to understand what's happening. He didn't get much time to think before a loud shriek resonated from the forest and his head almost shot up into the smoke again. He knew that cry. Another shriek came and he stepped closer to the forest before he froze, looking back to his nest.

He was pulled between parental instincts for the nest and the pair-bond between his mate and himself. For a horrible moment, he didn't know what to do. He had to help his mate, but he can't leave the nest unattended! Giving small grunts of indecision, he backed up a bit back towards the nest until another much-more-urgent cry came from the forest. That decided it, he gave a responding call and went into the forest to aid his mate in whatever trouble she might be in.

~Where will you be when the dark is rising?
How will you keep from it's terrorizing?
Where will you be my darling?
Where will you be when the dark is rising?~

The smoke was getting thick and the smell of ash and charcoal was getting stronger. He had to bring his head lower and lower to breathe without hindrance. Small creatures scurried around and over his feet in panic, but he ignored them as he pushed on towards the ever-growing calls of his mate, which continued to escalate to a terrible scream and he sped up all the more, giving an urgent cry of his own.

The heat was getting too much and he began panting to avoid overheating. And the source of the heat became apparent. Fire. He's never seen such a thing before but instincts told him it was deadly. But that won't deter him from locating his mate. He arrived to a circle of flame, shrieking and coughing as smoke practically consumed him and he circled around a bit to get some relief. Then he saw her, right in the center of the circle and the flames were closing in on her. His mate spotted him and tried to get to him, the fire refusing to let her go from its trap.

~But visions and ambition
Never listened to submission
And she was on a mission from the highest above~

The female called to her mate as she tried repeatedly to get passed the flames, failing miserably and only earning burns upon her soft scaled skin. Her mate hissed at the fire, as if demanding it to leave his mate alone. But this was one enemy that was never going to back down. He charged the fire, taking a swipe at it as if to cut a path across, his mate doing her best to mimic his actions, but it was no use. He tried going through himself, but only jolted back in pain as it burned his flesh in turn.

This was hopeless; nothing he did was working. He could only step back from the intense heat and growing flame and watch as his mate continued to struggle to be free, coughing heavily as smoke continued to harass her lungs. He gave another cry to her, desperate to help, but in turn helpless against such desperation. She gave a return cry, voice choked and raspy as she began to stumble away back to the center. The circle was getting smaller around her and she understood that nothing could save her from this fate.

~Framed amid the thick of fire
Aflame, a Valkyrie
She made him click without desire
And in his eyes she swam a Goddess~

The male cringed as another cry escaped his mate, this one was far worse than her earlier screams. This one sounded like she was being tortured and it tortured him as well to hear it. He shrieked in distress as he watched the wheel of fire finally reach his partner. He could almost feel her pain and anguish as he watched her thrash about as flames leapt onto her. Her thick hide was of no defense against this monster, even as she shook herself as if trying to shake off some dirt or trying to dislodge a predator.

Finally, she collapsed to the ground and went silent except for a weakened moan as more fire began to envelope her form. The male barked softly as he stepped closer, raising his head higher to peer at his mate. She didn't move, except for slight shifts and breathing motions. But with the smoke and flames, she could get no air.

~How will you breathe when their wheels are turning?
How will you know if the sky is burning?
Where will you be my darling?
How will you breathe when their wheels are turning?~

The male continued to bark before giving another shriek. He didn't get an answer this time and he went silent. He didn't see any more movements from his mate and her very scent disappeared too as if the fire was intent on destroying that as well and replacing it with the plaguing smell of burning flesh. Finally, he knew his mate was gone and he stepped back, claws twitching in yet more distress.

What should he do now? His instincts told him that he couldn't stay here and he coughed as the wind shifted and waft the smoke right into his face. The remaining fire followed the wind and started to spread in his direction. Not wanting to leave, but knowing he had no choice, he painfully severed the pair-bond and went around the fire in a hurry to get back to the nest, looking back frequently until the fire was once more a glow in the distance.

~Where will you be when Babel builds my fire?
Will you not flee and label me pariah?
Where will you be my darling?
Where will you be when they light my pyre?~

Stepping out of the forest, he came to the mound and looked down in the nest. But it was in less-than-ideal condition. The eggs were smashed by the multiple retreating refugees, and though he could not grasp the concept of numbers, he still noticed that some of the eggs were missing, no doubt taken by an opportunistic predator, like Oviraptor or Velociraptor.

He stood motionless, just staring at the destroyed remains of his offspring. Not one left…not one survivor. First his mate, now his children. And his territory. As he looked back to the forest, he saw the fires continuing to destroy the foliage, going wherever the wind guided it. And who knows if the wind will come in this direction yet again…He had no choice but to leave.

But he was reluctant to. He was frozen inside, not a single spark in his mind telling him to be defiant or angry. Just emptiness as dark as the storming sky above him…

--

He reopened his eyes again and it was night. He had heard a snap and barely managed to turn his head enough to look to the surrounding new forest, and saw a Tarbosaurus lingering nearby, watching him with curiosity, but with the usual predatory interest. The male blinked slowly, but didn't even have the strength nor the will to even verbally threaten the carnivore. Let it linger. Let it come closer. Let it eat him when he dies. He didn't care.

The male shifted again, this time to turn his head to the nearby lake. Its surface reflected the sky perfectly, illuminating every star and displaying a slightly rippled full moon. He stared at the water for a long time, not that time mattered; he lost track of how long he's been lying here. He lost that along with his everything, but…

He did have the patch of sand beneath his body, he did have the wondrous sight of the sky on the water's surface. He might not entirely understand the concept of beauty, but he appreciated it none-the-less, no matter how vaguely.

And as he stared at the brightest star shown by the lake, he could just remember the scent of his mate's living body, hear her soft greeting call. And as he closed his eyes, her form materialized as if in a dream, and he would smile if he could. It was in the darkness of the storm where he lost his partner and children and it will be the dark of night that will claim him. And it only grew darker as he fell asleep for the very last time.

~For only in the grip of darkness
Will we shine amidst the brightest stars~

Character Discussion / Kosh and Mr. Clubtail

I always wondered if Mr. Clubtail and Kosh are the same characters. I mean, Kosh sounds a lot harsher (both his words and his voice) in the TV Series than Mr. Clubtail in the movies like 3 and 5, especially the latter with this quote:

Quote
Morning kids. Nice day for a tree star.

Even his arguing didn't sound as harsh:

Quote
And I've seen your kind waste too. Splashing around needlessly, for shame.

Seems like a rather large change to go from that to doing things like laughing/belching berry juice all over Cera and Chomper and just being gross and rude in general.

*shrugs* I just wanna know people's thoughts. And sorry if there's a topic on this already...

I am a spazz and proud of it!

After encouragement from Pangaea, I decided to finally put up an Ask Me topic. So any questions you have, I'll be more than happy to always answer! Whooooo!!  :smile

General info:
I love animals with an extreme passion. There is no animal I dislike or am indifferent to! Though I'm not as knowledgable as Pangaea, I certainly love dinosaurs and try to learn as much as I can about my favorites. And!.......That's all I'm saying for now!  :DD  Ask away!

LBT Fanfiction / Being the Bigger Sharptooth
« on: December 23, 2010, 02:58:45 AM »
I think I'm starting to annoy people with all these new posts........ Don't worry, for the time being, this is my last LBT fanfic (let's see how long that lasts...)! Another chapter story, this one more popular than my other one. So here it is: another Thud and Chomper 'friendship' fic.

Prologue

Thud yawned with a stretch and shook his head, opening his eyes a little. Early morning has arrived, the Bright Circle has risen long enough to warm the earth outside their cave. It was a relief. The Cold Time has ended not too long ago and the night was still chilly. So chilly, his older brother Screech has curled tight against him for warmth. He looked at his still-sleeping sibling, his only living family since Red Claw came along. Speaking of Red Claw, he looked about for the larger sharptooth. He wasn't in the cave, probably outside hunting without them. The green Fast Biter's sniffer told him that he had left not too long ago. Understandably accepting of that, he relaxed and laid his head over his brother's neck.

It's very rare that they get a chance to sleep in like this. Normally, they have to submit themselves to Red Claw's schedule and unfortunately, Red Claw, though he sleeps like a rock, wakes up very early. That's one of the disadvantages about their inter-species alliance. But he didn't feel like lingering on the subject; it was only making him feel irritated when he should be enjoying this free time. He sniffed a bit to calm himself, and to his luck, the smells were peaceful: the ever warming earth, the gentle breeze, and just the general smells that were enough to get him in a contentedly lazy mood.

Closing his eyes, he decided it wouldn't hurt to get some extra sleep...

Red Claw returned when the Bright Circle was higher in the sky only to see those two bafoons still sleeping. He growled to himself, as he wasn't in a particularly good mood. His hunt did not go too well and it was very annoying to this short-fused sharptooth. Figuring that he's given them enough time to rest, he leaned down and nudged them hard with his snout. Screech immediately stood up and bounded off a few steps towards the entrance before shaking himself out. Thud took a bit longer to rouse, blessed with a good sleep-story. Red Claw hissed in irritation and nudged even harder. "Wake up, you idiot!"

With that, Thud growled softly and stood, not bothering to open his eyes as he sleepily made his way to his brother. When a Big Biter (my assumed name for Tyrannosaurus) twice your size tells you to do something, you better do it if you wanted to live. The brothers learned that early-on. Still, it was hard for them not to grumble their complaints under their breath.

"Shut up, you imbeciles. Your lucky I didn't bite you two awake." Red Claw growled at them angrily when he heard the incomprehensible murmurs. Screech and Thud immediately closed their mouths tight, not wanting to test their superior just as their day was starting. That could be the last thing they ever do.

They moved out of the way as Red Claw stepped outside towards the river. Feeling thirsty themselves, the Fast Biters followed him before they paused. They had spotted other sharpteeth playing in the river and they recognized the family. They've chased them off before and now they're back again, as if they didn't take the previous threats seriously. Well, they'll regret that decision. Growling, Screech and Thud ran ahead to scare them off once more, truly intent to get the message across: this part of the river was theirs and theirs alone.

"Get out!" Screech hissed with teeth bared as they bounded towards the group of smaller predators. The family looked up from their frolicking and backed away in fright. They were hoping that they won't be found here again, as they learned that they can usually sneak by whenever the deadly trio were hunting. They had seen Red Claw on the hunt earlier and thought they had the perfect opportunity to play in the water. Unfortunately that wasn't the case.

"I'm pretty sure we told you before to make yourselves scarce." Thud continued, jumping into the water with a large splash. The family backed up faster, trying to stay out of range from the other predators' teeth and claws. Red Claw then arrived at the river bank at a deceivingly leisure pace and let out a menacing roar to further intimidate the intruders. It wasn't needed as the family scrambled towards the opposite bank. However, one of the young ones tripped and Screech lunged forward to grab it, clamping his jaws across its back. The hatchling screamed.

"No! Let her go! Please!" the lone parent yelled in desperation, barely keeping herself from rushing over to her daughter's aid as she knew that would be a fatal mistake. "I promise, we won't come back!"

Red Claw only growled before giving a contemptuous smirk. "We'll make sure of that." He nodded to Screech, who violently shook the youngster in his jaws until it showed no further signs of life. Its parent cried out in agony as Thud moved over to his sibling and also sank his teeth in the body. The anguished mother was about to give in to her maternal instincts and 'rescue' her child when Red Claw charged forward with jaws wide and an angry demand. "Now beat it!"

Seeing no other option, the mother and her remaining child turned and high-tailed it out of there as fast as they could, now having it firmly implanted in their minds never to return. Red Claw slowed his charge to a stop and glared at the retreating figures before returning to the river and leaning over to drink as his smaller companions growled softly at each other.

Screech and Thud decided that now was the perfect time to play. The Fast Biters began pulling at the body, trying to yank it away from each other. The two brothers seemed to be evenly-matched in this game of Tug-A-War and Screech grinned, lifted a clawed hand, and gently pushed at Thud's sniffer. This got the green sharptooth to willingly let go and the eldest of the siblings took off, splashing noisily. Thud splashed after him, hissing like they were hatchlings again.

Red Claw ignored their antics, plenty used to it. So long as they were serious when needed, he didn't care how goofy they acted on their free time. He himself wasn't interested in their games nor was he interested in the body as breakfast because it was too small for him to bother with. But when he was splashed in the face, that's when he finally acknowledged the game by ceasing his drink and glaring at his cronies with a warning growl. The smaller carnivores put everything on hold when they heard their leader's annoyance and hurriedly moved to shore where splashing won't be an issue. Arriving onto dry land, the two looked at Red Claw to see if this was acceptable. Said sharptooth snorted irritably, but returned to his drinking.

Taking this as approval, Thud chuckled and snatched the toy from his brother, taking off quickly with his sibling right at his tail. After a few moments of running in zigzagging circles, Screech took this game to the next level and tackled Thud to the ground, making him drop the body. For another moment, they scuffled along the ground, snarling, kicking, and biting at each other, but at the same time taking care not to actually hurt each other. They paused, both evaluating their opponent, before ending the game altogether. Screech picked up the body as Thud wandered over for his share. The blue Fast Biter tensed his jaws and bit the hatchling in half. His green counterpart took his portion and walked a little ways off to eat.

Red Claw sated his thirst and proceeded to scan over the surrounding territory. Screech and Thud finished their mid-morning snack and took their turn to drink. While they did so, they listened to their boss grumble to himself as he sniffed for signs of prey. The winds were still today and the larger predator seemed frustrated about that. "Lousy sky. Wish I could kill it for not cooperating." he muttered, glaring at the Bright Circle and the sky puffies. The Fast Biters didn't respond, not wanting his temper to target them. Red Claw growled before looking towards the Great Wall, at which point Thud stopped lapping and looked up a bit.

"Maybe we'll get lucky and those Leaf Eater hatchlings will wander out of their precious valley." he said, echoing Red Claw's thoughts. The larger carnivore nodded with teeth bared.

"Hope so. Then I'll show that puny sharptooth what happens when he hangs around with food." he hissed vengefully. Thud glanced in the direction of the Great Valley before nonchalantly resuming his drink. Unlike Red Claw, Thud wasn't as hateful to Chomper. He actually respected the youngster for saving his life. As for Chomper hanging around with those Leaf Eaters, it was so disgraceful, it was hilarious to the green Fast Biter. He remembered cracking up when Chomper told him that the tiny Swimmer was his friend. Thud hadn't laughed that hard since he himself was a hatchling.

A sharptooth being friends with a Leaf Eater... As if that's possible! And even if it was, it couldn't possibly last long. Yeah, he gave that little biter a year or two to grow up and see that friendly life amongst Leaf Eaters isn't so ideal after all. That is, a year or two if he lived long enough... Shaking his head, he snapped out of his thoughts quickly and leaned down to resume drinking, but something was wrong here. Ripples travelled from the banks and his reflection flickered on contact. Pausing, he realized the ripples came from vibrations and the vibrations came from foot steps. Foot steps that coming louder and closer. He looked to Screech, who was looking up to the largest of the trio.

Red Claw growled and snarled, the still winds keeping him from sniffing out the intruder. Standing as tall as he could, he spotted movement from a clump of trees and out stepped another large sharptooth. This, he won't tolerate and he gave a threatening roar as he moved to challenge the invader. Thud and Screech rushed after him, although they knew that their help won't be accepted as their boss 'insist' rather rudely to fight territorial battles with large sharpteeth himself. Still, no harm coming to watch and provide back up on the slim chance it's needed.

The intruder gave a responding roar and the two Fast Biters finally saw what they were up against. A very large green Plated Sharptooth (Giganotosaurus) with exceptionally large and sharpened teeth and claws, even for a sharptooth. This creature, the size of Red Claw himself, was impressive to say the least, but being intimidated was not one of Red Claw's personality quirks and he glared at the other predator, his voice a very low and dangerous rumble.

"Get lost, scum. This is our territory." he warned, tail swishing a large dust cloud behind him. On either side of him, Screech and Thud voiced their own threats in loud hisses and snarls, hoping numbers alone will discourage the stranger. Afterall, they had him outnumbered and although either one of the Fast Biters were only half the size, there was two of them. Along with Red Claw, that would be the equivalent of fighting two Big Biters. Odds like that is usually enough to scare off any invader, but this one was not put off in the slightest. If anything, he seemed to like the prospect of such a challenge as he was smirking.

"Well, I'm looking for territory myself." He glanced about almost mockingly. "And this seems like a good place to call home."

Red Claw laughed scornfully. "You honestly believe you can take what's ours? I don't think so." He narrowed his eyes, looking over his opponent. "Don't you know who I am?"

The Plated Sharptooth stepped closer, looking Red Claw and his two Fast Biters over before giving a shake of his head. "Afraid I don't. But if you were smart, you'd turn around and leave, cause this is my territory now!" At this, Red Claw didn't bother with threats anymore and charged, jaws ready to tear. Unfortunately, his opponent anticipated this and slammed his head under Red Claw's hard enough to stop the attack and make the scarred sharptooth step back a bit. However, it would take more than that and Red Claw snapped for the throat of the invader, who immediately jerked back, teeth closing a mere breath from his skin. Snarling, he rose his claws and slashed Red Claw across the face.

Screech and Thud watched in amazement; this new sharptooth could move and fast! But they had confidence in their boss' power. It was the power that earned them the title of the meanest and deadliest sharpteeth around. It wasn't possible that this newcomer could be anything of a match. Those were just lucky shots...

After shaking his head a bit to rid the stinging pain of the slashes, Red Claw glared all the harder at the newcomer before starting to circle, changing tactics. Attempting to get the other sharptooth's guard down, he made mock lunges, jaws snapping the air. The Plated Sharptooth kept head-to-head with Red Claw, snapping back with each new lunge, but refusing to lose ground. Judging accurately on the best time for a real attack, Red Claw managed to clamped his jaws into his rival's neck. Smirking at this advantageous hold, he gradually applied more pressure to either break the neck or bleed it out. He tried to ignore the foreclaws of his opponent that raked and sliced through the skin along his shoulder. To stop this, he tugged and forced the other sharptooth down to the ground.

Unfortunately, that was apparently what the Plated Sharptooth was waiting for. Shifting a bit and lifting a leg, he gave Red Claw a strong kick to make him let go before standing and snapping around, hitting the Big Biter with a powerful blow of the tail. The Fast Biters watched with wide eyes as their leader fell to ground. They were about rush to provide their assistance and mount an attack themselves, but a directed glare from Red Claw was all they needed to back up and stay out of it. But they weren't too sure about this anymore. And their reason proved all too clear:

Every move Red Claw made, every tactic he used, everything he had was being countered by this strange sharptooth. It seems the trespasser has had lots of experience fighting and winning. Red Claw had the same experience, but his weakness wasn't coming from strength or expertise, he realized. He was too slow to effectively attack and counterattack. And after many failed attempts to land a deadly blow, he was tired and bleeding. The Plated Sharptooth was bleeding as well, but not nearly to the extent of Red Claw's injuries, and he seemed to have been waiting for this opportunity. Using the other sharptooth's growing weariness to his advantage, he lunged and headbutted the Big Biter so hard as to make a Domehead jealous, sending resident sharptooth crashing to the ground.

In horror, Screech and Thud shifted their weight from foot to foot, silently urging their boss to get back up and give them a signal to attack. But their leader did nothing, laying motionless as the intruder came closer to finish this. With that, the two brothers charged. As far as these Fast Biters were concerned, they had to lend a helping claw. Red Claw can suck up his pride; this was for his own good. The two smaller sharpteeth leaped and latched onto the side of the rival sharptooth, claws digging and adding to the wounds as they tried to earn enough time for Red Claw to recover. But things did not go as planned for them as the Plated Sharptooth thrashed about and managed to throw Thud off before smashing Screech into a large tree. Thud hit the ground hard, but his head shot up nonetheless at his brother's shriek of pain.

Thud's eyes widened as he spotted his brother soon in the jaws of the other sharptooth, the blue Fast Biter thrashing about and trying desperately to free himself. The intruder wasn't letting go and slammed the smaller carnivore's head right into the tree with immense force. Screech went limp instantly and Thud snarled in pure anger. Forcing himself to stand, he dashed forward and threw himself against the Plated Sharptooth's head, making him let his brother go. But no sooner had Screech's limp body hit the ground than Thud was snatched in the powerful jaws himself. Screaming in pain, he struggled as hard as he could, but had no more success than his brother...no more success than that little hatchling they killed earlier. He was given a hard shake before being thrown to the ground. Snarling in defiance, he tried to stand, only to be knocked back down. The pain was unbearable, made much worst when his enemy bit down on one of his legs as he kicked out, snapping bones like twigs. Roaring in agony, he slashed and bit his attacker's muzzle. That got him free, but not a second passed before he was grabbed and shaken by the jaws again. Things were getting darker to him from that point and as he was thrown back to the ground, he could only see and hear bits of things...

The Plated Sharptooth turning away and approaching Red Claw's still unconscious body...

Blackness...

A horrible crushing sound...

The intruder's triumphant roar...

Silence...

END OF PROLOGUE

Seems this is off to a dark-ish start.... Been having this idea for a while, but only recently mustered the courage (and time) to write it for public viewing. Whether the Plated Sharptooth is the same from the fifth movie is completely up to your imagination!

Kay, that's all my LBT fanfics. Till next time, whether it's an update or another story!  :wave

LBT Fanfiction / Guilty Until Proven Innocent
« on: December 23, 2010, 02:49:07 AM »
One of my two most recent fanfics, both chapter stories this time. This one's circles the Domehead trio in the original movie (ya know, the psychotic ones attacking Cera :DD ) as well as Chomper, who will be negatively affected by their actions in later chapters. Here's a quick pic of the trio and my chosen names for them:

And here's the first chapter introducing the Domehead trio on a more...personable level.

Prologue

Hunger, starvation...It's strange what that state can do to you. It makes you think of things you never would have even considered before. With no plants to eat around here, there was only one option left for him. Sure, it was other Leaf Eaters, not his own kind. As such, they might as well be dirt. He had no issues with attacking them, even killing them if the situation called for it. But still...this? The ultimate taboo of taboos, the inconceivable? Cepher shook his head a bit, blinking before looking down at the beaten body of a young Fanback. Nearby, his two companions watched him in confusion, wondering when he'll lead them off to continue their journey to the Great Valley. But their leader wasn't moving.

Was it possible he was starting to feel sympathy for their latest victim? No, no, that's never happened before. But why else would he just be standing there, seemingly very deep in thought? One of them, a black-colored female named Pacia, stepped towards the largest member of the trio, voice surprisingly soft for her fierce appearance and demeanor.

"Cepher? Are you alright?" she asked him. Cepher didn't seem to hear her at first, still staring at the body blankly. The third in the group, a small male named Rus, also walked closer when their leader made no response. He reached out and gave a small push to get his attention. It worked and Cepher blinked again before raising his head to look at the other two as if asking what they wanted.

"Are you alright?" Rus repeated Pacia's question. Cepher nodded before looking back at the body.

"Yeah, just thinking about...something." he told them quietly, knowing the thoughts in his head was not at all good. His traveling comrades picked up on this and looked at each other, then back at Cepher.

"About what?" they both asked simultaneously. There was silence for another moment before they got their answer, this one spoken even softer than the last.

"Something bad," he informed vaguely, looking at them, sharp claws clenching and unclenching in what seemed to be anxiety. This was quite unlike him. And at this response, Pacia and Rus tilted their thick domed heads, eyes widening a little. Time to see if their hunch was correct.

"You're not feeling bad for that hatchling, are you?" Pacia asked. At this, Cepher huffed in deep disdain as he returned his attention to the corpse of said hatchling, his own eyes narrowing. It was obvious he was not pleased with their guesswork; how dare they even think he was feeling for this pathetic excuse for a Leaf Eater laying at his feet.

"Of course not." he assured them sharply, hearing them sigh in relief. But this relief was short-lived when their leader's strange look returned as he continued with one simple question: "When was the last time we had so much as a bite to eat?"

Pacia and Rus looked to each other in growing consternation at the question. Where was this going? Finally, Rus shrugged. "I don't remember."

Pacia nodded in agreement. "It's been too long really." It was true. The Bright Circle had passed over them many times from the day they were lucky enough to find some buried roots in the ground and having to laboriously dig them out of the hardened earth. And even then, it was far from a satisfying meal, hardly helping in the slightest.

Cepher grunted before very softly starting to explain to them what his mind has been saying ever since they rammed this hatchling to death. "We'll never make it to the Valley if we don't find something to eat and fast." Silence came as that was said. As much as they didn't like it, they knew he was right. They needed food, more than just a few little roots that were more trouble than they were worth, but there was no sign of anything even remotely edible nearby. Or so they thought as Cepher resumed. "It's obvious we won't be finding green food anytime soon. So if we want to survive long enough to get to our destination, we'll have to change our tactics a bit."

"What do you mean?" Pacia asked, her tail flicking to and fro. Another pause before Cepher spoke in his softest tone yet.

"We have food, all around us. We just have to let our eyes wander to what's at our feet." At this, Rus indeed looked to his leader's feet at the hatchling's body, soon understanding and jerking back in shock.

"Are you saying that we should...eat other Leaf Eaters?" he exclaimed more or less loudly, although his voice dropped when Cepher glared at him. He looked about to make sure nobody else was around to hear this before looking back to the largest member and speaking softly. "Are you?"

"Yes. I am."

At this confirmation, Pacia backed up a few steps, a look of horror on her face. "But we're Leaf Eaters. Not sharpteeth. We couldn't possibly-" Cepher cut her off, his voice still a conspiring whisper.

"Look, it's either that or we die. We're not going to make it to the Great Valley if all we do is forage for weeks on end for leaves that aren't there. Yet we meet up with trespassing hatchlings like this one practically everyday. We kill the majority of them anyway, so we might as well make some use of them."

"But we're not sharpteeth." Pacia repeated. "We're not made to eat meat..." she added, looking down at the body like it was going to rise up from the dead and attack them for having this conversation. Rus shared her look and gave a nod.

"Yeah. We might have the claws and teeth of a sharptooth, but not the appetite or stomach of one. For all we know, eating another Leaf Eater might do more harm than good."

"We won't know that if we don't try. Really, we have no other choice." He looked at them for a long time before changing his approach. "You both want to live, right?" This got a nod. "You want to reach the Valley, right?" Another nod. "And you're both starving, right?" Yet another nod, this one more hesitant. "Then what's the deal? The other Leaf Eaters and the other Domeheads won't know we're doing it. If anything, there's no reason to pass up this opportunity."

"There is a reason. It's called right and wrong." Pacia said. "Look, the other herds of Leaf eaters are low-lives, I admit. Some deserve to die by our claws. But eating them is more than crossing the line. Following a sharptooth's example will make us no better than the sharptooth itself." A couple more moments of silence passed before she shook her head. "No. No. This is where I put my foot down. I won't eat the flesh of another."

"Me neither." Rus agreed.

Cepher glared at them before softening, fully understanding what they're saying and, deep down, he agreed with them. Domeheads may be one of the most vicious of the Leaf Eaters, but even they had a sense of morals...to some extent. Unfortunately, his stomach had no such morals and it growled loudly, reminding him and the others of their extremely dangerous level of hunger. "I'm not liking the idea either, trust me. But like I said, we have no choice." He turned back to the body, frowning a bit. "It'll only be temporary anyway, only until we reach the Valley."

More silence, but even that was broken by more growls, this time coming from the stomachs of the other two. Their spirits sagged noticeably as their resolve began to break down and they looked at each other before Rus muttered very softly. "Only temporary?" Cepher nodded slightly. "Then we'll be right back to eating green food?"

"Exactly. And on the chance we find more green food on our journey, we'll enjoy them like we normally would. It's not like we'll be forsaking leaves forever."

More silence, shattered this time by Pacia. "And we won't actually...hunt down the other Leaf Eaters, right?"

"Of course not. We'll be doing exactly what we've always been doing, with just the little twist of eating what we kill. But we won't be actively stalking them or anything; we won't kill more than we usually do. In fact, we won't be changing much of anything, really."

"We'll just be eating them instead of leaving them for the sharpteeth..." the female continued with a meekness that was uncharacteristic for her.

"Precisely. They're gonna get eaten anyways, why not let it be us who eats them?" He watched the duo before him for a while before adding. "What else do we have to lose?"

This time, the silence went on undisturbed and was almost suffocating as nobody moved a muscle for what seemed like forever. Finally considering their very few options and choices, the two smaller members nodded very slightly, almost shamefully and they approached the hatchling as Cepher leaned down to sniff it a bit. He was hesitant as well, but determined to eat something. Clawing the carcass a bit, he took his first tentative bite. Pacia and Rus watched in disgust, to see how Cepher would react to this carnivorous action. Their leader wore a heavy grimace and he retched a few times, trying to keep the piece of meat in his mouth, but not wanting it in there at the same time. It was obvious he felt deep shame about this, like it was something truly evil, but he wasn't going to let that stop him from doing this. Dying of starvation was not the way he wanted to go. He couldn't really bring himself to chew it and just swallowed hard, panting heavily afterwards, as if exhausted by the effort of fighting his gag reflexes. After a moment of recovering from the deed, he reluctantly took another bite.

Pacia and Rus, seeing this, fought back their horror at the spectacle and at the knowledge that they'd have to follow the example as they stepped even closer to the body to give this a try themselves. They had pretty much the same reaction as Cepher, Rus actually spitting out his piece before forcing himself to try again. Each could only manage a few small bites, enough to take the edge off their hunger, before they hurriedly backed away from the body in revulsion at what they just had to do.

"That was...That was horrible..." Pacia muttered, rubbing her snout against the ground in an attempt to wipe off the blood without having to touch it with her hands.

"I don't want to do that again..." Rus added, trying to keep down what he nibbled off the carcass.

"We'll have to... We just gotta get used to it..." Cepher said as he gingerly laid himself down, not feeling too well as his stomach tried to cope with this sudden change of diet. "It'll get easier...eventually..." He wasn't sure if that was true, but he felt the need to reassure his companions as well as himself. The others nodded half-heartedly as they laid down in turn, neither feeling very good as they tried to keep their stomachs calm. Their stomachs weren't cooperating and neither were their minds, which were practically flooded with the feeling of shame and self-loathing for their unnatural actions.

But thank goodness it's all just temporary...

END OF PROLOGUE

I tried to keep to the LBT trend of naming characters based on their species. Pachycephalosaurus= Cepher, Pacia, and Rus! Creative? Probably not; easy to think up? Most definitely  :D ! Hope you all like this one!

LBT Fanfiction / Betting Game
« on: December 23, 2010, 02:37:32 AM »
Concerning Redclaw, Screech, and Thud. This was the second LBT fanfic I wrote up since my first went well with readers. This one did surprisingly good as well, though I always felt it wasn't one of my best. But hopefully people here will enjoy it too.

Screech, Thud, and their sister, a purple Fast Biter named Shrill, watched as a large sharptooth chased after a Dome Head. The smaller predators were high on a pile of boulders, out of sight and out of reach. This was their territory, and the hunting sharptooth below was invading. However, the trio was hesitant to issue a challenge. You don't fight somebody twice your size...even if you outnumber him. Instead, they'll wait to see if this intruder was here to stay. Then they'll take proper action if nessecary.

Until then, they were content to just stay back and watch the action. It was early morning and they had yet to grab breakfast. There was no need to hunt when there's somebody to do the hunting for them...

"Bet the Leaf-eater gets away." Shrill stated with a mischeivous glint in her red eyes. She loved issuing gambles, as she's pratically the all-time champion. There were few days where she was ever defeated in this type of game. Thud sniffed disdainfully and looked at her with an all-knowing expression.

"You kidding? That Dome Head's as good as dead." He smirked. "Bet the best part of our next kill."

"You're on." Shrill accepted the wages. Screech sighed, knowing a game like this only leads to cheats and loopholes. This trio of Fast Biters were still young predators who spent more time playing than hunting. Still, they made a pretty good team when it came down to business.

"Either way," the blue member of the pack muttered with a yawn. "I'm starving and we'll get our share of that meal..."

The young Dome Head jumped straight into the air as the greyish brown sharptooth bent down with jaws open. Landing on the sniffer of its assaulter, the Leaf-eater tumbled off onto its back, staring at the giant predator with wide-eyed horror. It's never seen a sharptooth so big in its short life. It screamed as the sharptooth roared and scrambled quickly to its feet before taking off in a sprint for life. The ground it once stood on was stirred by the carnivore's massive mouth before being spat out.

There had to be an escape route somewhere. But where? Some place where it could fit...It could use its small size as its advantage. There was a rush of air at its tail as the sharptooth snapped and missed. The Dome Head again jumped into the air and spotted a very large pile of thorn bushes nearby. That could be its way out! Landing, it knew it needed more time and turned to face the sharptooth. It lowered its head and charged straight into the predator's leg.

The Fast Biter trio winced as the Leaf-eater made a comeback and they heard the sharptooth's roar of pain. They watched the Dome Head make another run for it right into a large tangle of thorny branches. The greyish sharptooth recovered quickly and stalked towards the bundle of needles. He sniffed the sharp plants and circled it intently, looking for gaps. No way was such a large sharptooth ever going to get in there. But it was a different story for Fast Biters.

The three saw their chance and carefully climbed down, making sure not to trip and have a clumsy entrance. Such a mistake can easily turn them into the prey of choice.

"You lose." Shrill reminded her brother as they reached the ground. Thud snorted, not at all pleased, as they cautiously circled the larger sharptooth. The predator spotted them and glared with cold yellow eyes. It was obvious that he didn't want them around. He looked at the throny tangle and turned away, walking off...giving up? The Fast Biters needed nothing better.

Screech and Thud rushed into the thorn plants and Shrill called out tauntingly to the large sharptooth, who turned back at her with a growl. "Hey, this is how it's done, Big Guy!"

"Shrill!" her brothers shouted and she immediately dove in. The three predators met up and sniffed quietly for signs of their prey. It was in here somewhere, and they'll find it. Not wanting to make their target more alarmed than it already was, they advanced carefully to avoid the sharp projections of the branches. Screech jerked his head to the right, signaling for Shrill to creep ahead in that direction. She nodded wordlessly and moved on.

Thud was instructed to go the opposite way of his sister and he offered no objection. When it came to the hunt, Screech was always in charge. After all, he hatched first...As for him, he lowered to the ground and crawled forward, following the trail of the frightened little Leaf-eater. It wasn't far...There it was...cowering with its eyes closed, oblivious to his presence...Not for long.

Screech growled menacingly, causing the Dome Head to snap its gaze up. Looking terrified, it turned around hastily and took off. Just as Screech had hoped. The Fast Biter gave chase, snapping at the air to keep the prey item going. Right into the first trap: Thud bounded from his hiding place and lashed out at the startled herbivore, who threw itself away. The green predator's jaws bit air as the crying youngster took off in another, hopefully safer direction...

It caught sight of a way out. Surely the original sharptooth it was trying to escape has left already. Just as the Leaf-eater was about to make its way free, the third Fast Biter leapt out and collided right into it.

Shrill shrieked in triumph as she held tight to their struggling breakfast. Screech and Thud caught up, grinning that their plan worked out splendidly, and was about to finish off their meal when Thud couldn't help making a point.

"Well, since this Dome Head didn't actually escape...It seems I won that bet." he said smugly. Shrill frowned, still keeping a tight grip on the weeping creature.

"But-"

"No excuses. I said it was as good as dead and..." He clamped his jaws around the Leaf-eater's neck, proceeding to shake the life out of the unfortunate beast. He then dropped the limp body to the ground. "...now it's dead. I win. I get the best part."

But before Thud can indulge in his loophole victory, there was a roar and the Fast Biters looked up in horror to see that large sharptooth. They screamed and dashed out of the way as the larger predator bent down and snatched up their prize. The smaller carnivores watched in utter disbelief as the sharptooth swallowed THEIR entree!

"Hey!" Shrill protested angrily. The sharptooth looked down at them and gave an evil grin.

"THAT is how it's done." he hissed mockingly. Shrill growled at this backfiring of her words and, before her brothers could stop her, she ran forward to further confront the thief.

"Shrill, don't!" Screech and Thud warned, but it was too late. The giant sharptooth lunged forward and before they could blink, snatched the female in his jaws. The brothers gaped in utter horror at their sister's pain-filled scream. Feeling the need to protect their sibling, they also charged forward and jumped up into the air, latching onto the sharptooth's left side. Feeling their claws, the huge meat-eater roared in outrage, dropping the injured Fast Biter.

Screech climbed a bit higher on the sharptooth's head and dug the large killing-claw on his foot into flesh. With his signature screech of anger, he slashed deeply past the sharptooth's closed eye and down his neck. Thud picked up where he left off and continued the long gash onto the sharptooth's arm to his claw. Not wanting to pushed their luck, they leapt off hastily, snarling threateningly.

The sharptooth backed off a few steps and the Fast Biters took the opportunity to rush to their sister, who lay motionless on the ground.

"Shrill?" Thud inquired as Screech nudged the female's sniffer with his own. There was no reaction, even when blood began to puddle underneath her. The brothers refused to give up and tried to pull the other Fast Biter to her feet. She fell, as limp as their fallen prey moments before. The males stood stunned for a few seconds longer, as if still expecting something to happen. Maybe she's just unconscious and will wake up soon...even if she smells of death...

At last, Screech shook his head and Thud swallowed a lump in his throat. He couldn't help feeling that it was his fault. If they hadn't issued that betting game, he wouldn't have paused to gloat his win. Then they probably would've had time to kill the Leaf-eater and drag it back to the thorn plants to eat in peace...But no...

Then, remembering the large sharptooth, they turned to the predator and backed away. The sharptooth was recovering from his injury, roaring in agony. But, catching the movement, he glared at them with one eye, baring his teeth. However, instead of attacking them like they expected, he gave a low dark chuckle. The remaining Fast Biters glanced quickly at each other in confusion, not sure what to make of this.

"Well, you two are tougher than you look. Perhaps I can use that to my advantage." he rumbled. Screech and Thud crouched low, ready to flee if he should strike out at them. Instead, the sharptooth continued, looking at the thorn plant. "Yes, I probably would've lost my prey if it wasn't for you numbskulls."

Screech and Thud exhaled sharply at the insult, but neither said anything.

"You two are the only ones to actually inflict injury on me. That's saying something. Maybe you're more useful to me alive than dead..."

The Fast Biters finally got what he was implying. They growled, thinking how horrible it would be to ally themselves to their sister's killer. But did they really want to same fate? When there's death in the Mysterious Beyond, you have to get over it quickly and move on quickly. Otherwise, you'll make yourself vulnerable.

"What's in it for us?" Screech asked suspeciously, his brother nodding with narrowed eyes. The sharptooth snorted, as if he wanted to tear them apart for asking such a thing.

"Life. And..." He glanced at Shrill's body and smirked. " Just imagine, I can make all sharpteeth like this if they messed with you."

He was offering them protection. The Fast Biters again looked at each other. They could see advantages if they extended pack membership to this sharptooth. They could obviously be a great help in hunting and flushing out prey...And with this predator, they'll be able to take food they never would've dreamed of, like Longnecks! They felt their mouths water at the thought of it. The sharptooth must've noticed, for he nodded.

"Good. It's a deal."

"Who are you, anyways?" Thud questioned, unable to hold it in any longer. The sharptooth paused, opening his now injured red eye. He looked down at his wounded arm and the claw that was already stained with his blood. For a moment, the Fast Biters thought he would get revenge on them, but he didn't. Instead, he growled out his answer.

"Call me Redclaw."

THE END

And the added bonus of how Redclaw got his scar. Of course, it's all speculative and just for fun. I dunno how logical my theories are, but it's a possibility!  :D

LBT Fanfiction / One Time Thing
« on: December 23, 2010, 02:24:54 AM »
After some encouragement given to me by some of the members here, I decided to post the rest of my LBT fanfics. And I decided to start with this one cuz it was the first LBT fanfic I ever wrote (though not the first I posted here), concerning Thud. Inspiration for this was my favorite TV episode Escape from the Mysterious Beyond.

Thud knew something was wrong with his tail. It's been aching terribly since that accident on the high ledge where rocks piled painfully onto the poor limb. Of course, he never showed his extreme discomfort to Screech and Redclaw. If they knew about it, who knows what they'll do. Loyal friendships in the Mysterious Beyond was rare, if nonexistent. Most relationships are a simple matter of convenience. Practically the only exceptions are between mates or parent and child.

Closest thing to a 'friendship' Thud had was with his brother, Screech. But besides that, there was one other sharptooth he held a kind of positive respect for. That was the little biter that hung around the Leaf-eaters...he forgot his name. The hatchling help Thud free his tail and in return, Thud saved him and his friends from being found by Redclaw. But that was a one time thing...

The green Fast Biter looked over at his sleeping companions and saw it as an opportunity to check out his tail. Standing and making sure the other two were deep in their sleep by nudging them hard, he backed into an isolated corner in their cave home and turned his head to assess the tormented extremity. It seemed fine on the outside, but why was it hurting now more than ever? It was giving him a bad headache, comparable to the sick feeling those smelly Tree Sweets gave him.

He reached out with a two-fingered hand and gently touched the tender limb. Pain shot up and Thud cried out before quickly muffling it to a soft rumble. His eyes tearing up a little, the carnivore checked the others to make sure that they didn't wake at the sound. Redclaw was growling in his sleep, probably because the still-snoozing Screech shifted closer to lean his head on the larger sharptooth's body. No sign of stirring...

Shaking his head, he turned his gaze back to his tail. More careful this time, he curled his tail around, cringing in pain and trying hard not to be too loud. Examining the limb, he tilted his head this way and that to see the target of interest at every possible angle, as if it was his first time seeing the body part.

He didn't get it...It looked just fine. Yet it was giving him the worst pain in his experience. Maybe the problem was inside. It wasn't impossible. Maybe his tail's broken...but wouldn't it have healed by now? He didn't know. Sucking up the pain, he poked the tail with his snout. It felt a little harder than usual. Should it be worrying? It causes pain, so it should be very worrying.

Time to check this out on a closer scale...

Almost reluctantly, knowing what to expect, he settled back down. He lowered his head to the ground, and with one hand, he clamped his muzzle shut. Squeezing his eyes tight, he lifted his free hand and, before he can change his mind, he hastily slashed a small cut in the middle of his tail. It was all he could do not to scream. Instead, he growled and pressed his teeth together so hard, his jaw muscles began to hurt. Tears of agony rolled down his cheeks.

Taking a deep breath and clearing his throat, he again checked on Redclaw and Screech. Still nothing...Thud was both relieved and amazed. They're sleeping so deeply, anyone can come and go anytime they pleased. Well, the important thing is that he won't get caught doing this. Looking at the cut, he saw a kind of goo ooze out. It wasn't blood. Being a sharptooth, he knew very well what blood looked like.

This stuff, whatever it was, was strange to say the least. It was a disgusting yellowish color and it smelt awful. It seemed impossible that it was coming from his body. Thud grimaced, leaning in to get a closer look. Raising a hand, he was about to poke at the unknown fluid, but appeared to have second thoughts. He was torn between revulsion and curiosity. Revulsion won out and the Fast Biter withdrew his hand. He stood up and carefully walked out of the cave towards a nearby river. He wanted the stuff off and he couldn't bring himself to lick it clean.

Arriving at his destination, he turned around, laid on his belly, and gingerly dipped his tail in. The result was a strange sensation, both slightly painful and wonderfully soothing at the same time. The (relatively) small sharptooth sighed in relief and relaxed, closing his eyes. Content for now, he allowed his mind to wander to what he was going to do next.

He didn't know what to make of this strange tail-phenomenon. He should probably find somebody to help him. But who would do that? In the Mysterious Beyond, if you so much as imply that you're injured or sick, you'll be dead before you even realized that you've been attacked. He doesn't even want to risk telling Screech and Redclaw. Now if he did tell someone, it has to be someone who wasn't from here...someone who was harmless to him...preferably someone who's gotten him out of trouble before...

Eyes snapping open, he knew of one person who fit that description and that was-

"Little biter..." he muttered to himself. The young sharptooth has helped him once before, there's no reason to think that he won't help him again. But it was the middle of the night. The little biter will be sleeping in the Great Valley. How was he supposed to get to him? Taking his tail out of the water with a wince, he turned to the wall barrier of the valley, getting to his feet.

If there was a way in, he'll find it. He would like to be back before the Bright Circle rises and, more importantly, before Redclaw wakes up...

--

Thud walked slowly along a ledge trail half-way up a cliff, sniffing heavily. He's caught the little biter's most recent scent not too long ago and was following every twist and turn all the way up here. There has to be an entrance nearby. How else can the young ones come and go as often as they do? He just hoped that the opening would be big enough for him.

Looking up from his sniffing, he peeked over the edge and saw how high up from the ground he was. One slip-up and he really would get an injury worth dying for...or dying from...Focusing back to his task, he lowered his sniffer near the ground and resumed his tracking.

Coming to a small cave, he knew his efforts had paid off. Narrowing his orange eyes and growling to himself, he evaluated the size of the opening very carefully. He concluded that he should be able to fit if he proceeded low on all fours. Seeing no other options, he did just that. Closer to the ground, he carefully squeezed inside and followed the little biter's scent.

Thud didn't like this. A Fast Biter was not made to move this way and sometimes he came close to falling forward on his face. Not only was this undignified for a sharptooth like him, but sometimes his tail would come into contact with the walls, sending up an agonizing jolt of pain. He avoided crying out, as it might alert the whole valley to his presence.

He didn't have to go through this for very long. Soon he reached the other end of the tunnel and he made no hesitation in squeezing back out and hurriedly returning to his usual upright posture. He didn't know how Leaf-eaters could stand being on all fours all the time. He was glad he was a two-legger.

Looking around, he noticed that he had the whole Great Valley in view. Even he'll admit that it was a nice looking place. He could see Leaf-eaters everywhere, sleeping soundly without a care in the world. Thud heard his stomach talking and he realized how hungry he was...But he wasn't here to hunt. Anyways, he didn't want to challenge these Leaf-eaters all by himself. Maybe next time when he was with Screech and Redclaw.

Moving carefully down to the ground, Thud stalked quietly between the sleeping Leaf-eaters. He was breathing slow and deep, silently taking in scents. He was alert especially to the larger creatures. Last thing he needed was one of them waking up, seeing him, and setting off the alarm. No doubt they'll panic and attack him or at least try to drive him out. He did not need that happening right now.

His sniffer led him to another cave, but thankfully, it was larger than the previous one. Looking around one more time, he went inside and immediately spotted the little biter curled into a ball, muttering in his sleep stories. Satisfied that he made it this far, he quickly moved closer and nudged the youngster with his snout.

"What?" the little biter mumbled in the Leaf-eater language. He dazedly opened his eyes and looked up at Thud with a groggy expression. However, almost instantly, his eyes widened and he began to scream in terror. The Fast Biter was anticipating this and pressed a hand on the little one's snout, gently enough not to cause harm, but firmly enough to shut him up.

"Listen, little biter." Thud growled softly in the sharptooth language. "I'm not here to eat you. If I were, you'd be dead by now. I came for your help."

"My...help?" the little biter questioned, voice muffled, in the same tongue. Thud nodded. "With what?"

The larger predator glanced around, making sure that nobody was listening before taking the risk and letting go of the little biter's mouth. The youngster stayed put and didn't set the alarm. Instead, he looked up at the Fast Biter almost expectantly. Thud didn't want to waste time and went straight to the point.

"There's something wrong with my tail." he told him, turning slightly to show off the limb. The little biter peered at it inquisitively. "It started since that earthshake accident."

"When the rocks fell on it?" the young one asked. Thud nodded with a growl. The little biter glanced around before giving the larger sharptooth a suspecious look that made the Fast Biter growl a bit louder. "How did you get in here?"

For a moment, Thud said nothing, baring his teeth in a snarl. He didn't like the little one questioning his motives and actions. No doubt if he answered that question, the Leaf-eaters will block it off like they always do. He didn't want that because he wishes to be able to return with more sinister intentions. For now, the only response he gave was a dark chuckle.

The little biter sighed, knowing that he won't get an answer. "Why ask me? Why not Screech and Redclaw? They're grown-ups. They probably know more about this than I do."

"Because..." Thud started, frustrated at the fact that the little biter has obviously forgotten the ways of sharpteeth. He blamed the Leaf-eaters. "I never even told them about the accident. And you're the only one who's ever help me before."

The little biter thought for a long moment before giving a smile. "Okay. Let's see what's the problem." He stood up and ran behind the Fast Biter, who lowered on the ground to make his tail more accessible. While the young sharptooth evaluated the limb, Thud scanned the area for intruders. He wasn't to be caught off guard by a restless Leaf-eater. Instead, it came from another source. There was a sudden short burst of pain from the tail.

Thud jumped up on reflex and glared at the startled little biter. "What're you doing?" he hissed at him. The youngster was trembling fearfully, fiddling with his hands.

"I just poked it. I didn't know it was going to hurt." the little one muttered defensively. Thud growled angrily, giving the other sharptooth a scolding sideways glance.

"Chomper?" a soft tired voice came from the tunnel nearby. "Are you okay?"

Thud snapped towards the voice, teeth bared, and Chomper seemed nervous. "Uh oh.."

A pink Fast Runner walked in sleepily, rubbing her eyes. Seeing Thud, she froze with a terrified expression. The green predator crouched, ready to pounce, when Chomper approached their stunned visitor.

"It's okay, Ruby. Thud won't hurt us. He came for help." Chomper tried to reassure. Thud growled at this. He can take help from a young sharptooth, but not from a Fast Runner. They were only part-time Leaf-eaters, but they were close enough. And Thud wasn't that desperate...Chomper turned to him and continued in sharptooth. "This is Ruby. She knows a lot of things and she always helps me with my problems. She can help you too."

"Chomper. What's going on?" Ruby asked. Chomper turned back to her.

"Thud's tail hurts. I don't know what's wrong with it. Maybe you do? He promises not to hurt you..." He looked over his shoulder at the Fast Biter. "Right?"

The said sharptooth growled at Chomper for a few seconds before considering Ruby. She stared back at him worriedly. Thud spent a moment weighing his choices. He was already losing dignity as it was; did he really want to make it worse? But his tail was killing him and from what he heard, this Fast Runner was very knowledgeable. Maybe she can be useful. Chomper seems to believe that. Well...he'll forget about dietary differences, for the sake of his tail.

Thud gave a barely noticable nod in agreement before adding: "It's just a one time thing." Chomper grinned and looked back at Ruby.

"He promises." he told her. The Fast Runner gave an uneasy, half-hearted smile.

"Alright. Sure...Me helping will be helpful..." she agreed. Thud grunted nonchalantly and laid himself back down as the hatchlings rushed to his aching tail. They examined the limb carefully, whispering amongst themselves. Ruby paid much attention to the cut Thud made earlier, which was oozing more of the stuff. The Fast Runner hummed to herself thoughtfully before looking at the large predator. "I'm gonna have to touch your tail. Is that not okay?"

"At least she warns me..." Thud muttered to himself. Chomper looked sheepish when he heard that.

"He says it's okay."

Ruby placed her hands near the wound and squeezed more goo out. Thud's eyes snapped wide and this time, he couldn't stifle his scream. Suddenly, Chomper pounced onto his snout, trying to quiet him. It was all the Fast Biter could do not to thrash around and yell his lungs out before killing these hatchlings. He growled, telling himself that this was something he'll just have to endure.

After a long agonizing moment, Ruby paused and Thud went limp with relief, Chomper sliding off his face. The Fast Runner looked at them and made her conclusion.

"I've seen something like this with my eyes before. One of my little brothers had it." she told them. Chomper smiled.

"And what happened?" he asked. Ruby paused, with a look that showed that she really didn't want to answer that question. Chomper got the hint and gulped and Thud look terrorized by the news. To think he might die from this...It was unfathomable! He knew now that he really needed to get better soon. Thankfully, Ruby had something better to say.

"But one of my sisters also had it and we found a way to make her all better so she would not have it." she informed the two sharpteeth. Chomper and Thud sighed and the former allowed a smile on his muzzle. Leave it to Ruby to solve everyone's problems. She bounced over to the entrance. "Come on, we need to gather some stuff so they can be gathered."

Thud stood up, wincing at the lingering pain in his tail, and followed the little ones out. He wasn't going to give them any chance to get away. Though he was sure that they truly wanted to help, he didn't want to take the risk. Last thing he needed was to be abandoned at a time like this.

Quietly, they moved quickly to wherever Ruby was planning to take them. Tiptoeing around a Longneck's nest, Thud paused as he recognized the little one and the male grown-up. Baring his teeth, he stepped closer. He remembered confronting the adult and being thrown in the air twice because of this Leaf-eater. Now the Longneck was sleeping...and vulnerable.

Chomper and Ruby returned and tried to push the Fast Biter away, but Thud didn't budge. Luckily, he decided on his own that he'd rather not draw attention to himself and turned around to continue on their route. The Fast Runner appeared to be looking for something and although Thud didn't like being out here, he made no rush. If it'll help with the pain, then it was well worth waiting for.

Ruby seemed to have found what she was looking for and hurried to a bush nearby, picking tiny Tree Sweets and plucking off two very large leaves. Chomper looked confused and Thud gave a quiet growl. This hatchling was supposed to be helping him, not gather midnight snacks! Placing the Tree Sweets on the leaves, she gestured that it was time to go back in the cave.

Returning was easy and Thud stared at the sky to assess the time. It was close to day, a glow showing the imminent arrival of the Bright Circle. They should hurry.

Looking at the Fast Runner, Thud lowered to the ground once more. In frustrated confusion, he watched as she put the Tree Sweets into her mouth and chewed them in her beak. Chomper tilted his head.

"What are you doing?" he asked. Ruby tried to answer with her mouth full, but her voice was too muffled to be understandable. She held up a finger, gave a few more chews, and almost eagerly spat the mush onto one of the leaves.

"That's one Tree Sweet that wasn't very sweet." she muttered to herself, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. She smiled at the others. "Just trust me." Her smile disappeared as she looked at Thud, as if about to convey some bad news. "I'm gonna have to take that gooey stuff out."

The Fast Biter's eyes again widened and his tail automatically rose higher out of reach, making him wince. He shook his head, vaguely wondering if there was a less unpleasant method. Ruby stepped closer, dragging the leaf with her.

"Thud, that gooey stuff is the hurt. The less you have, the less hurt you feel." she informed him. The sharptooth narrowed his eyes, but he had to admit, that did make sense. But the pain of taking the 'hurt' out was unbearable. Oh, well...This will just have to be another thing he has to endure. Sighing in resignation, he moved his tail within their reach and closed his eyes tight in grim anticipation. He heard the Fast Runner approach his tail.

"You ready, Thud?" Chomper asked. The said sharptooth grunted in response and tensed, knowing that the agonizing treatment will begin at any minute now.

"Chomper, normally I'd want you to stay away from another sharptooth's mouth, but-" Ruby started, but Chomper finished her words with action. Thud felt the little biter jump onto his sniffer and try to hold his mouth shut. The Fast Biter allowed this, knowing it was for good measure. "Okay. Here we go."

Almost immediately, the pain started up with earnest and Thud's cries was muffled by Chomper's efforts. It took every ounce of will power he had to keep his tail still for Ruby. His instincts told him to lash out at the source, but he instead satisfied that urge by cutting deep furrows into the ground with his claws. He wanted to just scream as loud as he could, but that wouldn't be possible with Chomper clinging to his sniffer. The Fast Biter shook his head, but, luckily perhaps, the smaller sharptooth held on tight. Tears welled up and he fought to keep them at bay, without success.

Then, impossibly, the pain began to subside…very slowly. Thud opened his eyes and saw Chomper staring back with a sympathetic look. He turned his head to Ruby, the younger sharptooth still hanging on. The Fast Runner was still squeezing at the wound, but there was less ooze coming out, having been replaced with blood.

"There." She said, stepping back. She looked at Thud. "My sister said that was the most hurtful part of it." She said this as reassurance and the large sharptooth nodded subtly while Ruby picked up the mushy Tree Sweets. She smiled. "And she said that this was the bestest part because it wasn't so hurtful."

She smeared the mush on the injury and Thud flinched involuntarily. But it was barely painful and reminded him of the river he visited earlier. Speaking of 'earlier', he looked towards the entrance for the time. The Bright Circle hasn't appeared yet and the Fast Biter began to feel anxious. Screech and Redclaw will wake up soon…

"Okay, we're almost done…" Ruby announced. She finished up and Chomper let go to help her wrap the large leaves around the mid-section of his tail, covering the wound. They tied the ends together and stepped away as Ruby examined her work proudly.

Thud stared at the leaf covering (Similar to the ones Ducky and Spike was wearing in the sixth movie) and moved his tail a bit. It ached just a little, but it was a whole lot better than before. He was glad he came here, even if it was a one time thing. He gave a small smile and nodded at the hatchlings, thanking them.

"You're welcome." Chomper said, smiling back. Ruby grinned as well.

"Happy to help!" she said before adding in a whisper: "Though you should probably go before the grown-ups know you're here."

Seeing the point, Thud stood up and hurried to the entrance. He gave them a quick backwards glance and walked off. As to be expected, he tried to remain inconspicuous. But it didn't work this time as he heard someone shout.

"Fast Biter! There's a Fast Biter in the valley!"

Like a guilty Egg Stealer caught in the act, Thud put on a burst of speed towards the small cave he used to get in, a familiar black Three Horn hot on his newly treated tail. The sharptooth wasn't going to stand and fight like he would usually do, as he didn't want to undo all he's worked for. And although he's leading them to his only way into the valley, it didn't matter anymore. That can be his return gift to the hatchlings: Saving them from future intrusions by him. And as long as the Leaf-eaters didn't venture into the Mysterious Beyond, they'll be safe...That is, until he found another way in...

Climbing up and arriving at the cave, he growled at his pursuer before tucking his tail safely between his legs and throwing himself inside on all fours. The Three Horn smashed into the wall, which brought down rocks to seal the entrance. Thud ignored this and kept moving forward until he reached the other side.

Standing up and shaking dirt off, he again checked the time and saw the Bright Circle clearing the horizon. Uh oh...Redclaw and Screech should be waking up by now! With that in mind, he hurried along the ledge back to the ground before running towards their home cave.

The cave was empty when Thud arrived. The Fast Biter paused in confusion, sniffing the air for any sign of his companions. According to his sniffer, they left not to long ago. He should follow their trail, make sure that-

"There you are!" He heard Screech's voice and turned around to face his approaching comrades. His brother continued. "We woke up early and you weren't there. So I've been sniffing all over for you."

Thud's eyes widened in surprise. "Really?" As he did so, he again tucked his tail under. Last thing he needed was for them to figure out why he left in the first place. He didn't know what they'll do to him, but he could imagine something horrific. It usually is whenever Redclaw was involved.

Screech nodded. "Of course. You're my brother. Redclaw certainly didn't care..."

"Nope." The large sharptooth muttered distractedly. He was staring at Thud's tail. Screech also took notice of the leaves on his brother's limb and sniffed it curiously. Redclaw shoved the blue Fast Biter away. Thud backed up a few steps and Redclaw knocked him over roughly and sniffed the plant intently. The smaller sharptooth growled defensively and the other predator was about to bite the stuff off like it was some kind of parasite.

Thud gave a panicked scream, got to his feet, and ran behind his brother, who continued to stare at his tail like nothing else in the world existed. Finally, Screech couldn't hold his question off any longer. "Why do you have that?"

Thud paused, wondering why trying to hide something only makes it more obvious. He did NOT want to tell them about it, but what's the point of lying to them? They'll find out eventually and it'll all just backfire on him. Might as well get it over with and take the consequences like a true sharptooth. However, Screech beaten him to it.

"Does it have anything to do with the fact that your tail's been hurting?"

The green Fast Biter was stunned. "You knew?" he managed to choke out in his shock. Redclaw snorted in an insulted manner and gave a rare smirk, like Thud was a hatchling that just asked an obvious, not to mention stupid, question.

"We're made to notice things like that." he told him. Thud was truly amazed. They knew all along and-

"And you never tried to kill me?" he couldn't help but ask. It's the way of the Mysterious Beyond, after all. Any injuries was treated as a weakness and weaknesses was treated with death. Why were they making a special exception for him? His thoughts were interrupted when Screech chuckled.

"Of course we never tried that. You're my brother. And Redclaw's our friend even if he doesn't want to admit it." Screech grinned at the larger carnivore, who was growling with eyes narrowed. This was a rare moment where they were actually having a relatively decent conversation. A conversation Redclaw decided to end.

"Trust me when I say that if you weren't useful to me, Thud, you'd be dead a long time ago. Fast Biters like you two are not entirely off my diet." he hissed. Both Fast Biters gulped, reminding themselves to try harder to stay on Redclaw's good side. The scarred sharptooth looked off towards a point in the horizon, sniffing, before continuing with a growl. "Now, I can smell a family of Fast Runners. Follow me."

He walked off with Screech rushing to keep up. However, they paused when they realized that Thud wasn't following them. Screech tilted his head in confusion and Redclaw bared his teeth in frustration. The hesitant Fast Biter quickly stated his explanation before any harm could be done to him yet.

"I'm not hungry. You both go on ahead." he said, turning back towards the cave. He was, in fact, very hungry. He has been since he first woke up. But he figured that since he had two hatchling helpers, he owed them two favors. And since he was the best in the trio at catching speedy prey, not participating will definitely lower the chances of the Fast Runners getting caught.

"Are you sure?" Screech asked. Thud looked back at them and gave a small smile.

"It's just a one time thing..."

THE END

A rather long OneShot and it's gotten kind reviews. Hopefully it'll be the same here! Though I'll admit, I'm not skilled with Ruby's speech patterns. Please bear with me on that.   .....

LBT Fanfiction / Self-Control
« on: November 14, 2010, 08:45:49 PM »
This is from fanfiction.net, but might as well put all three of my LBT stories here too! First up, my newest one concerning Ozzy and his OC mate, Oliana. Though I still feel like this isn't one of my best fanfics (I feel that way towards all of my LBT stories), some friends told me otherwise and now I have the confidence to share it here too! I hope you all enjoy it!!

"Oliana? What're you doing?" Ozzy questioned the female Egg Stealer as she scraped the ground with her hind claws.

"Nothing." She looked at him with her usual kindly smile that always broke through the male's tough exterior. She always had a way of doing that. Must be why Ozzy has chosen her as his mate. She's the only one who knew his buttons, what made him ticked, and how to always cool his anger.

Sometimes, her abilities freaked him out. It's like she had complete control over him, though he knew that was far from the case. She didn't control him; instead she worked as a kind of conscience to balance out Ozzy's hot tempers. She was one of the few he treated as an equal…moreso than his own brother.

Ozzy watched as Oliana plucked leaves and grasses and he frowned. "Your not becoming a Moss Muncher, are you?"

"Of course not." she reassured with a soft laugh. "Just doing a little project." She looked at him. "And while we're on the subject of food, can you go out and find me a couple of eggs?"

Ozzy gave her a weird look of suspension, mostly about this 'project' of hers. What kind of project involved digging a hole in the ground and playing with plants? He probably didn't want to know and he turned and began walking off.

"Alright then. I'll be back. And Strut! Spit that disgusting stuff out and come with me to find REAL food!"

Said Struthiomimus sighed and reluctantly got rid of the green food snacks he was trying to enjoy while his brother was distracted. He stood to follow but paused to let his brother go a bit of a distance before he looked to Oliana. "Aren't you going to tell Ozzy?"

The female smiled and shook her head. "No. I want it to be a surprise." She looked to the other. "But make sure you keep Ozzy out for a few hours. I'm gonna be in for a long evening…."

"Right. Good luck." Strut said in his usual cheeriness.

"Strut!"

"Coming, Oz!" He dashed off to his brother, who waited impatiently for him to catch up before they went off in their search for eggs for Oliana and themselves while they were at it. Ozzy didn't really know what to make of his mate's strange behavior. She's been acting a bit…weird for the past few days and it's been bothering him a bit.

'Must be a female thing…' he thought to himself and this thought couldn't help bringing up the memory of how they first met…

"Ozzy?" Strut questioned as they traveled the Mysterious Beyond in search of eggs. It's been a few days since the Great Earthshake struck and separated many herds, mates, and parents from their offspring. But still, food was still hard to come by and hunger made time of the essence. As usual, Ozzy's more than a little sour about their lack of success. This fact showed by his response.

"What is it now?" he question in obvious exasperation. Strut lowered his head a bit at his brother's temper and muttered.

"No need to be rude, Ozzy. I was just going to ask where we're going exactly." He seemed a bit more nervous as Ozzy's orange eyes narrowed and he hurriedly continued. "I mean, I know we're looking for eggs, but is there any place more specific we're looking?"

Ozzy only glared an extra minute longer, pondering why he's been putting up with his brother for so long. But, let's face it, he knew why: He cared for his younger sibling….Somewhere deep, deep, deep…..deep deep…deep down. Plus, Strut was the only companion available to him and he didn't relish the prospect of traveling the Mysterious Beyond alone on their journey.

"I told you before, we're following the Leaf Lickers."

"You mean Leaf Eaters, Ozzy." Strut corrected.

"No, Leaf Lickers. Like you." He added with a scowl, thoroughly disgusted by his brother's preferred choice of food. Strut said nothing for a while, plenty used to Ozzy's constant insults. He wished his brother was more accepting of things, but then he wouldn't be Ozzy if he was.

"Anyway, I told you before, Strut, where these disgusting creatures go, there's bound to be eggs." Seeing his brother was still a bit confuse, he brought it down some more. "We're going to the Great Valley. An egg banquet with no sharpteeth." An Egg-Stealer's paradise.

"The Great Valley? But Ozzy…."

"What?" The older Struthiomimus was really starting to get annoyed with the others constant questioning.

"Um…." Strut stammered. "Have you ever seen this Great Valley place?"

"No." Ozzy replied with his arms crossed.

"Then how do you know it exists, Ozzy?"

Another exasperated sigh and he answered as if it was the most obvious answer in the world. "Some things you see with your eyes, Strut. Others, you see with your stomach. It's out there somewhere, and we just have to find it." He continued walking and Strut hurried to keep up. He still wasn't sure if such a place existed and he was about to nervously state so when another voice cut in.

"I know where the Great Valley is." It was a feminine voice and Ozzy, already in an irritated mood, huffed almost scornfully.

"And what makes you so…." He trailed off when he turned to look at her, beak suddenly frozen in a slight gape and eyes a bit wide. It was a female Egg-Stealer, much darker tone of brown than his brother, almost to the point of being black. But what surprised Ozzy the most was her deep green eyes that communicated mirthful coy personality that was only intensified with the smirk on her face.

Strut didn't fail to notice Ozzy's state, and all the more worrying was his brother stopping a scornful comment. That wasn't like him at all; he ALWAYS finished his insults. The female gave a soft laugh and walked over in a silky, confident manner. She paused beside Ozzy and lifted a hand to his lower jaw and closed his beak.

"It's rude to stare with your mouth open."

This seemed to snap him out of it and he immediately crossed his arms again with another huff, trying to mask the growing feeling of some uncomfortable emotion he didn't understand. He tried to keep his voice to the usual confrontational tone.

"And who do you think you are?"

The female smiled at him. "Name's Oliana. And I happen to live near the Great Valley's walls."

"Really?" Ozzy said with some doubt. After all, if she truly lived there, then why…

"Mm hm. I was visiting my family when the Earthshake hit." She tilted her head a bit, still smiling in what seemed to be a friendly way, though it made Ozzy a bit unsettled. Not the 'She-is-up-to-something' kind of unsettled, but a strange kind of 'I-feel-different' way. He wasn't sure if he liked it or not. "I can take you there if you want."

Strut looked at Ozzy and Ozzy looked back at Strut. The younger brother gave a shrug. "What's the harm, Oz?"

Ozzy looked at the female in his usual glare, considering her. Why not? It's not like he had anything to lose. "Alright. So long as I still give the orders!"

"Not a problem, dear."

Over the next few months, she had proven to be a very useful companion and Ozzy soon found out what those strange feelings were. He was in love with her, as impossible as it seems. He didn't know what it was about her, but he simply couldn't stand making her upset in any way. For a while, he had kept this soft-spot of his to himself, but it only became more difficult to hide.

It must've gotten obvious at one point, because before ya know it, she would begin making advances to him. First it started innocently enough, a few hinted smiles and soft laughs. Then it evolved into things like giving him the occasional nuzzle. He was a bit stand-offish as was expected, but then he began returning the gestures little by little.

The love has blossomed.

Strut mostly stayed out of the two's business. For the most part, he was happy they were becoming a couple; maybe that'll help with his brother's obvious obsession with eggs, give him a new priority. Plus, Oliana's been sticking up for Strut and as a result, Ozzy abused his sibling less. That was definitely something to be enjoyed, though it did feel a bit lonely sometimes when your brother's no longer hitting your head with his tail or foot or something….

This evening's hunt for eggs was as difficult as was expected. Ozzy couldn't wait to reach the Great Valley so this 'fighting-for-survival' ordeal can finally end, and as he and Strut returned to where they left Oliana, they found her sitting on the hole she was digging earlier, half-asleep.

"Oliana?" Ozzy questioned. His consort's partially closed eyes opened a bit and she smiled tiredly.

"Hey, Ozzy…" she greeted quietly.

"I couldn't find any eggs." He walked over to her, eyeing her laying-down position. "And are you done with your little project thing?"

At this, Oliana gave another of her soft laughs and she nodded lightly. "It wasn't easy. But then again, stuff like this never is." Before Ozzy could question her further, she lifted her head to place it under his and she whispered softly. "You're a father."

Ozzy's eyes widened and he generally looked shocked and highly confused at the news. "W…What?"

Finally, Oliana stood up and stepped back so her 'project' would reveal itself to be a nest, with half a dozen eggs nestled inside. Ozzy blinked in disbelief, staring at the eggs, and as typical of overwhelmed new fathers…

He fainted…

Who Knows How Much Later...

"Ozzy? Wake up…"

"Is he dead…?"

"Of course not." Ozzy groaned, the words echoing in his head as he began to wake up. "See? He's fine. Help me get him up." He felt his mate and his brother's claws pulling him onto his feet and at first, he was limp, but then he regained enough consciousness to stand on his own.

"What happened…?" he asked, rubbing his head.

"You fainted. Are you alright?" Oliana asked. The older male nodded and shook himself off, back to himself in no time… And what better way to show it than to reprimand his brother for having a twig in his mouth.

"Spit it out!" Strut did so immediately and cringed as Ozzy seemed about to hit him in punishment. Oliana rolled her eyes with a smile, knowing her mate's A-Okay, and did Strut a favor by stopping Ozzy before harm could be done.

"Be nice, Ozzy. He is your brother." This only got a grunt, but Ozzy left Strut alone. Instead, he turned his attention to the nestful of eggs. The new mother's smile widened as her partner took a close look at their future children. "I'm already thinking of names for them."

"We don't know which will be boys and which will be girls." Ozzy pointed out, trying to ignore an ominous impulse.

"I know, but I have alternatives for each." She went over to him and nuzzled with a purr. Then came her most trusting gesture… "Egg laying got me hungry. Mind watching our children?"

She knew this was risky, she knew her mate had an undying obsession with eggs. But surely he didn't view her eggs, THEIR eggs in the same way. She had complete confidence in something called parental instincts, something every dinosaur, including Ozzy, should have.

"Not a problem." Ozzy responded. He felt confidence as well; yes, he's having a hungry urge towards the eggs, but it'll wear off soon. Maybe a nest-sitting job like this was all it took to turn on those new paternal instincts.

As Oliana went off, leaving the males behind, and Strut settled under the shade of a nearby overhang and Ozzy laying himself beside the nest, they didn't know just how wrong they can be…

Only an hour passed after Oliana has left for a forage. Strut was asleep, no doubt dreaming about green food, and Ozzy was circling the nest, shifting an egg every now and then. It's been a worrisome hour for him, as the eat-instinct was beginning to outweigh the little parenting skills he thought he possessed. At the moment, he's kept himself from doing anything rash, but how long can he keep that up?

He hoped Oliana would return soon.

Unfortunately, given the lack of food around here, she could be gone for a couple more hours. A few times, he thought of waking his brother to watch the eggs for him, but he wanted to do this himself, believing that it'll get better.

It never did.

He was lowering his head to nudge an egg into a new position with his snout and the smell of food flooded his sniffer. Three things were working against him in the split second it happened: his instincts, his empty stomach, and his addiction. With such formidable adversaries, the little voice always telling him to care, not eat, didn't stand a chance. Once his sharp-beaked jaws easily crushed that first egg, it was all over. He didn't really know what he was thinking when he turned on the other eggs, or even if he was thinking at all. All he knew was the pleasuring feeling of breaking the shells and swallowing the delicious fluids inside.

Strut woke up when he heard the cracking shells and groggily looked over to the nest to find his brother hunched over it. He wasn't the smartest Egg Stealer in the world, but even his sleepy mind put two-and-two together and he gasped.

"OZZY! STOP!" He stood and dashed over to his older brother to pull him away, but Ozzy merely pushed him aside, not even glancing at him as he continued his hungry feeding of his own progeny. Strut wasn't gonna give up that easily and shoved himself between his brother and what remained of the eggs. "Ozzy, I mean it!" His older brother glared at him, but the damage has already been done. All but one egg has been eaten already and that one surviving egg was already in his brother's claws. Strut tried to grab it, but Ozzy wasn't going to give it up.

"Back off, Sap Sucker!" Ozzy yelled, one hand holding the egg high enough to make it difficult for his sibling to reach, the other holding said sibling back. This soon resulted in the younger brother tackling the older, still trying to get that last egg. It was like they were hatchlings again, whenever Ozzy stole whatever Strut was playing with and they ended up wrestling for it.

Except this time, it was in deadly earnest.

Unfortunately for Strut, back then he never won these kinds of games, and he had no chance of winning now. Ozzy finally managed to kick him away and stood triumphantly. But before he can enjoy his victory snack…

"Ozzy?" The voice came from behind him and was barely loud enough to hear, but it still startled him. He jumped, dropping the egg and letting it shatter at his feet. He seemed a bit irritated by this, and turned to reprimand whoever startled him, only to step back.

"Oliana…"

The female looked aghast at first, staring at the egg splattered in the dirt. Her horror intensified as she noticed the tell-tale egg fluids around her mate's mouth and she looked over to the nest. She couldn't believe her eyes and she hurried to see if there were any survivors. There were none. All six eggs were gone, shells broken. She practically felt her heart meet the same broken fate. Tears flowing heavily from her eyes and down her cheeks, she buried her face in her hands, sobbing. Strut stayed back, looking heavily disappointed that he couldn't save the eggs. Ozzy seemed distressed as well, as if just now realizing what he had done. A heavy feeling of regret came and it only got worse as he watched his mate grieve and mourn her lost children.

"Oliana…" he repeated her name, edging closer and nudging her with his snout. This only earned him a slash across the face and he jerked back in pain as Oliana glared at him.

"I trusted you, Ozzy!" she yelled through her tears, voice choking a bit. "I trusted you to keep them safe and you…." She trailed off as her voice refused to say more. Ozzy's beak opened a bit, but nothing came out. He wanted to tell her how sorry he was, but his voice refused to say anything as well. Though deep down, he knew that even if he could speak, forgiveness would never come of it. His mate was inconsolable, and he didn't blame her.

And he felt the same breaking in his heart as well as he watched her turn and run…

Made three pics, mostly Sierra of course... And I'm not the best artist in my family, so please excuse the general bad-ness of these three pics.

Our Flyer Trio as Babies-

A Pal's RP OC "Girlfriend" For Sierra (Oh....how he hates her sooooo much....)-

Sierra Being Pwned by Said "Girlfriend"-

I suck at coloring (the third pic, my pencils didn't like me at all). And backgrounds are never nice to me so I avoid them as much as possible by not doing them at all in most cases! Sorry for that...

Edit: I did it!! Thanks so much for showing me, Adder!!  :D

Suppers. Everyone calls me Sparky and I'm 20 and still in love with the Land Before Time series (much to my dad's annoyance). Everywhere on the internet, I go by FlipperBoidSkua, so it's always easy to find me. I like writing fanfics and drawing, can't say I'm any good at it, but I try....(my horrible drawings!! It BUUUURRRRNNNNSSS!!) I love animals more than anything and currently dream of working with them for the rest of my life.

Land Before Time-wise, I'm a huuuuuuuuuuuge fan of the following characters:
-SIERRA!!!! On the very top of the list!!!!
-Ozzy!!! ....I sing the Egg song every time I cook eggs...
-Thud!! He's a good sharptooth on the inside.
-Sharptooth! The original, baby!
As well as a few Misc. sharpteeth, like the magical liopleurodon in the 9th movie!
The first three on the list are in a RP story I'm doing with my best friend via e-mail and that inspires a lot of the things I do on deviantart and fanfiction. Maybe I can share here and see other people's work as well.

Anywho, I hope my spazzy self can find a place here, and meet some new friends that share this most prominent of my interests.
